Worst Levels Ever # 7

- Unfortunately, although there are lots of fantastic levels and stages in video games, there are also a fair few awful ones. This time, we take a look at my most hated mission from the Advance Wars series.
I will more likely pick bad levels from games that I otherwise enjoy. These are the ones that stick out the most and can bring good games down.
Please no suggestions/requests for any possible future episodes. There are two reasons why I ask this:
1. This video is all a matter of opinion. What might be my least favourite level of all time might be your most loved and vice versa. I'm hardly going to want to bash a level I love, am I?
2. I'm tired of getting requests or suggestions, and in this case, there's an especially large pool of choices, because just about every game ever has stages, levels and maps.
It's so funny when this mission completely contradicts the entire point Sonja's been making for two missions straight.
Sonja: "Dad you need a base!"
Kanbei: *gets useless bases but instead has an incredibly OP pre-deployed army*
Game : YoU sHoulD haVe iGnOrEd tHe BAse.
Yeah wouldn't his strength be in predeployment because his units are more expensive but more powerful?
Sonia :no father, you just cant Lauch an massive attack, you have to secure your bases!!
Kenbai: AHAHAHA KENBAI PLANE'S GO BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Kanbei: Daughter, you are too young to understand what I am doing. Now, *observe*
Kanbei's air force: *destroys your army while his infantry is securing all the cities at his side*
Sonja: "But how?"
Kanbei: "I might not be a genius. But Kanbei knows a simple truth: You don't need deployment bases if your enemy cannot even properly use theirs either, transport helicopters go boom with my fighters."
Sonja: ".......that feels more like cheating."
"Just traveling through their country." Uninvited. With armed forces. Yeah, that kind of is invasion.
Yeah i don't blame kanbei
That's litteraly what happened in ww1
Germany wanted to move troops through belgium and belgium saw it as an invasion of which I can't blame them
@@bongcloudopening5404 if belgium didn’t see it as an invasion the uk wouldn’t have joined the war and the uk wouldn’t have intercepted the message from germany to mexico to attack the usa and they wouldn’t know that germany told mexico to attack so they would remain neutral and then germany probably would have won ww1 or maybe im just an idiot that over analyzes things
Literally Russia vs Ukraine lmao

the best line in gaming: I'm sorry, what's an airport again?
Whiteboard Stickman the best line is from Nell when she says,"ANDY YOUR UNITS, THEYRE OUT OF FUEL!!!!"
Cirno lel
What is an airport but a miserable pile of spammable Fighters...
Neil Divins dat reference tho
She says it in the second game in the first mission when all of your units are out of fuel
When I finally won this mission, I was so mad that I stopped capturing properties at 14, blocked off the last property Kanbei could've captured, and destroyed all of his units. Got me a low rank, but satisfied my anger.
Hahahahaha I would do the same
Haden Odom You can win via rout here?
Should be possible to win via rout yes, the challenge isn’t so much defeating Kanbei’s units as it is stopping him from getting the fifteenth cap, since with no airport and one useless base in the middle of nowhere there isn’t too much he can do to replace units you destroy. In fact, if you can stop Kanbei from winning on day 6 and manage to shoot all his transport copters and infantry on that island, kanbei will never be able to win since he won’t be able to get a unit onto the island to make the winning cap, giving you all the time you need to spam bombers and decimate his forces if you do desire
Sometimes anger consumes you and anger let's you destroy all of the units of your opponent
The level's title was a hint.
You just have to exploit the programming error and win the battle of attrition.
.-. Kanbeis error is a hint?So by error you mean considering that the ai cant see the town thingys once his anti air is destroyed?Nice definition of error
this is called "coding error"

The A.I with an unfair advantage is one of my pet peeves in games.
It's like when the enemy had infinite PP in the first Pokemon games.
Later Pokemon games rig the RNG in the AI-s favor.😮💨
WHAT?!
*Looks at mons that can learn recover* You gotta be shitting me!
Yes, but that occurred ONLY in Gen 1 games. Still, not only Gen 1 NPCs' AI was pretty subpar in comparison to other Gens, but also almost every of them (everyone other than a few major Trainers) had Pokémon knowing only level-up movesets, which were mostly atrocious. So infinite PP matters little in this case.
"What's an airport, again?"
That specific zoom-in cracked me up.
Having AI be able to see your units and attack instantly through fog of war has to be one of the most unfair instances of bullshit in gaming next to Jackal Sniper frame 1 reactions in Halo 2.
It's not only unfair, it's f'ing stupid and bad programming. That's unfair difficulty which doesn't make a "good" hard mode, no I wonder I said F this when the game came out. Sturm 2 was bad enough.
I just hacked and got rid of fog of war, then the game became enjoyable, though I still tried to clear those nasty maps without the hack if I could, just to try
yea its insane, glad they got rid of that advantage in reboot camp
Intelligent Systems is already used to putting unfair bullshit on their games. Fog of war, ambush spawns...
Don't any of you randomly move through fog of war then reset the turn? If the game can cheat so can I.
wow, kanbei really changes between Pokemon conquest and here.
Yeah, I didn't know he's able to walk through multiple dimensions
The worst thing about losing this mission is how Nell is like "You idiot you should've listened to Sami and not gone for that base." As if to imply that the only way you could realistically lose this mission is for wasting time going for it.
For the normal campaign, Nell is right.
But in hard campaign... Nell seems freaking blind to think the reason we lost was going after the useless base and not Kanbei going "Air force go brrrrr"
@@pkmntrainerred4247 I was going to say this. Hardmode just reuses the normal campaign defeat text, which is now usually inaccurate. Guess they assumed anyone playing Hard Campaign was going to be skipping those messages and could figure things out themselves anyway.
@@Kazmahu I figured that out myself, but thanks.
It's funny how reusing dialog so much can create for hilarious moments
just follow the damn train cj
Oh, I get it. In the normal campaign, his error was thinking his base was any good. In the hard campaign, it was thinking that the position of his base mattered when he had a mountain of air units at service, price no object!
Looking at the stuff on GameFAQs, it seems you don't need the AI exploit if you follow a VERY SPECIFIC gameplan - something that would take a ton of trial and error as well as notetaking. Now, the people that figured out that plan would probably share the opinion of "Worst Level Ever" afterward...
Delimon007: I think that they were pointing out the issue that the AI will always make the same moves on any game if you repeat moves.
"whats an airport, again?" ...and hes supposed to command an army?
super elvis This is the same army where they have a schoolgirl as the supreme commander.

And that Andy is also a child.

The question mark is there for a reason.
WOW. Thank you for your insight! I'll be sure to correct that comment that I made 10 months ago, so that the joke makes sense.
Is it really the developer's error? Of course it is. They're the only one to blame, Intelligent Rigged Systems.
You forgot to edit your comment.

A new generation will get to experience this in remastered form.
Unless they change the AI.
For better or worse
Hopefully the developers are smart enough to notice
Still waiting
I want to at least have a brand-new "Blind Shot" feature where you can still attack the targeted space and hope there's a hidden enemy there or simply wasting your ammo instead.
The enemy AI is now affected by the fog of war but the unit he have should stay the same.
it was kanbais error because of his AI oversight which is technicaly an error the programmers made. thus kanbais error.

I love how the level is named Kanbei's Error? not Kanbei's Error 'cause it makes sense with the level design, since Kanbei only needs to cap 14 properties due to his one base.
Andy in 2001: What's an airport again?
Andy in 2003: Continents? Really??
My dad actually unlocked Eagle in the hard campaign. It actually stopped counting days because he reached 99 (which was the cap, apparently).
How did he cheese eagle?
How did he win?
"What's an airport, again?" XDDDDD
I don’t get it
Eagle: REEEEEEEEEEEEE
I love to imagine the developers playtested this level, but accidentally used the exploit in this video, and didn’t realize they would have lost ages ago otherwise. That or the exploit is considered the “real” way to win?!
It's bad enough that you have to fight an Indiana Jones-samurai-Japanese guy that looks like a chimpanzee, but the fact his forces were pumped on steroids on this mission makes it pure bullshit.
3 fighters, 3 bombers, 3 attack copters, not to mention his troops are all set up to seize all 15 properties. I applaud anyone that was able to complete this within 12 days and unlock the Sonja secret missions.
Also, anyone find it hilarious that a modern-day American F-14/F-15 gets curbstomped by a Mitsubishi Zero?
Kanbei is awesome :D

To be fair, at least the Zero is an actual fighter. Green Earth uses A-10 Warthogs, which are _ground attack aircraft._
Coming back to this video after they announced the remakes of AW1/2!
I wonder how this bastard of a mission is going to change. Will it be easier? Harder?
The title will be "player's error?" In thinking that they can beat this map
whoisthisgit's error, they'll replace every mission with Rivals
I wonder if they are actually gonna change the AI at all, or just faithfully port everything over.
Did I ever tell you how impressed I am with the quality of your videos? In more than one way I might add. I am always impressed with how informative and amusing your videos are. I am also impressed with the literal video quality, you manage to give even game boy games (which aren't really known for sharp graphics) amazing picture quality. Keep up the good work.

Jokes aside, I really like Advance Wars. Despite its... high difficulty. But that Hard mode mission seems just insane.
And I love the Tag Power song from AWDS. :3
Recently tried lunatic mode on Fire Emblem: Awakening...I have never been so irritated in a strategy game before that I gave up after only completing about 4 stages :\
I find it hilarious that you're talking about recruiting Sonja, then complaining about what Fog Of War does, as Sonja is basically the counter to Fog Of War.
How is she the FoW counter?
She has better vision than any co
Can see trees and reefs with her power active
And she is stronger when counter attacking, so she can actually punish cpu fow ambushes
We will see this Evil Mission back in Advance Wars 1+2 Re-boot Camp?
Yup. And possibly a fix to the A.I. that will prevent that neutral property from being captured. They may possibly nerf the mission as well. Plus, the A.I. may also be forced to follow the Fog of War rules too.
Good thing you've removed the intro and added an outro. It was really good, IMO.
The artwork he has as the thumbnails now are good too, even if they are sprites.
What's a Lub Lub, again?
This only reminds me of "Destroy ship at Drill Platform" in Jak II. A fairly easy mission in normal mode, but the HARDEST mission in Hero Mode, even with the cheats more readily availble (All the end game cheats are now the first ones unlucked in Hero Mode) You lose easily because the mission is based on your turret's hp, not your own, and all the flying crimson guards took shooting lessons.
Good thing nobody cares about that game anymore to torture themselves, was a good game(sorry 4 year slate bruh).

@@BeanieBrony1995PSQUEE me too dude
Same but I only wait 4 months.
You know, I was thinking.
What if capturing Kanbei's base is actually a viable strat for this mission?
Since his base counts in the 15 captured buildings, if you get the base, he would probably need to go to your half of the map for a final capture.
Now, you can lure his units in and deal with them more easily while staying nearer to your safe zones.
Of course this is not the best strat, but I think it's viable if you want to go super ironic and be like "LMAO Sami I won by capturing the base, how about that?! HAHAHAHAHA 🤪"
I was watching a youtuber play this advanced mission, and yes, it seems that blocking a city is the main way to stand a chance.
Curious how this game was made by a company named "Intelligent System"
I'm curious how Fire Emblem Awakening was made by a company named "Intelligent Systems."
Then again, they're probably committing the deadly sin of Pride.
More curious are the facts that yellow moon looks exactly like japan a bit rotated and in advance wars days of ruin the main enemy of the game is INTELLIGENT defense SYSTEMS, IDS

Now I wonder, will this mission stay as hellish as it was originally?
So excited to find out!
Perhaps, but they may also remove the AI's unfair advantage in Fog of War. Maybe...
Well, on one hand, the AI has been fixed, those are bad news...but the good news is it doesn't cheat on Fog of war anymore so is as blind as you can be with their units.
Also you get a pre-deployed bomber
This level was brutal. I played it a long time back and I remember I beat this level the first time by capturing Kanbei's lonely base to force him to invade the middle airport island which is a lot closer to my troops so I can have an easier fight.
Oh, the irony!
Dang, this is exactly the strategy I was thinking of XD
What's an airport?
A take-off or landing location for aerial craft such as planes. Why are you a-
...oh right, you're imitating Andy in his idiocy.
Meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out what goes wrong with strategy game level design. Kirby can certainly get away with Ace Attorney-style breakdowns for cannons designed against a guy who can fly that can't even aim up.
"At least units have less damage the less health they have left..."
Dunno what it says about me that Civilization IV came to mind on seeing this line.
So true.
I'm now thinking of the Japanese military in Civ 5 who DON'T lose strength as the units weaken. [don't know if they had that in Civ 4.]
Jadriam No nation has that ability in Civ4. Never played Civ5. Maybe I should.
Jadriam Those guys are dicks
Hey add in Fire emblem.
I find more difficult the second mission of Kambei (mighty Kambei) since you need to do a strange lure so the enemy moves most of his units on one side of the map so you could get an apc out on the other side and capture his hq. And that lure doesn't works 100%.
14:48 Anyone else get SUPER hyped when this music plays in Advance Wars DS?
It just screams: "VICTORY!!!"

@@TheVergile It's War and Ace Ace are literally impossible to Perfect S-Rank without cheat codes. And it's not even a matter of "I wasn't precise and lucky enough with my moves"; the HQs are too far away and the enemy force can't be routed. You won't manage the Perfect S-Rank time.
That's not a good first impression of Advance Campaign, and when Perfect S-Ranking for other levels in general boil down to suicide HQ rushes, that's why I will not like Advance Campaign.
Worst designed Advance Wars level is in AW2. The one where Colin has to stop Lash from taking his HQ for 14 days.
Just skip turn, 14 times. Lash will eventually park a vehicle on your HQ, and be unable to get an infantry on it. You win. By doing nothing.
Really? Wow, I might have to test that.
Colin wins by doing absolutely nothing.

will become punished = future
will be punished = future
its the same thing
@ Varcon Oh, you wanna do this? Lol okay. Just because they're both will-future, doesn't mean they're "the same thing". "Punished" goes with "be" if you want to use the passive voice, just like any other verb. If someone will punish Andy, he "will be punished" is correct and he "will become punished" is a very bizarre, uncommon and in this case most likely wrong way of saying what Minrod Vils was trying to say. Passive is constructed with "be", not "become". He will become an astronaut, for example. "Become" is used for a change in state of some sort, not for a change from active to passive voice.
well sir, will become punished is a mode of saying ''he will BE punished'' but in a more primitive way
look at this
Become is more likely to BECOME, BE would only change his mode of saying, a ex is mages wich sometime says something like ''you will become a frog'' whenever they use a spell
Andy will become punished, more like used for his status *after* Chapter 21: Rivals!
BECOME would be more likely turning something, getting something (ex: he will become good later) it can be used to indicate the status of some person, later or before
now see
Andy will Become/Be punished, like you said, is a very bizzare thing to say itself but it doenst stop of being used as a word itself in verbs and normal speeching with other people, usually saying that would be a case of misunderstanding, people actually understand what they understand, you cant really sure know if someone is fluent in english for correcting them
correcting him wont give him better grammar or make him learn everything, correcting is not really needed in a social site like youtube
for him = become/be
the correct for you = only be

I remember having to do some kind of crazy precise movements to sneak a few air units out of my base to be able to stop the infantry in time. Yeah this mission sucked.
that's some good criticism. AW1 was the hardest of all advance wars, but it was aslo the least fleshed-out. I guess the 2nd will forever be my favourite, DS is cool althrough the campaing is a bit boring. Never gonna like the days of ruin. It's a completly different game on the same engine. Should be called a spin-off.
I dunno. Maybe It's because I played all the games from the first to last, but it never felt too hard to me.
Pan Limak You know, its the same system for the four games and you'll get a lot of practice in the way.
Chief Gabriel The AI itself was somewhat predictible, just had different avatars. But I do agree, scenarios have been set against the player. Probably to make up for the AI.
Pan Limak Yea that last stage against Caulder was a freakin' nightmare, lazers, mortar cannons and the fact his base spawns whatever unit he wants at no cost every other turn...
Chief Gabriel Days of Ruin has its insane moments (such as Waylon Flies Again) but they're nowhere near impossible - there's always an alternate strategy.
For the level I mentioned, the key to winning lies in rushing Mechs over the mountains.
i know that base is mostly useless, but if Kanbei gets a Rocket there, it's a serious blow to unit production

Waylon Flies Again, I couldn't agree more. Shame that elitist sociopaths like GipFace would disagree claiming that it's fine just because it is far easier than Advance Campaign, never mind that Advance Campaign has its own share of bullshit, especially when it comes to ranking.

You can beat every single mission in AW1 just by baiting the AI with any transport unit (APC, Lander, T-Copter). Bonus points if the enemies move onto properties, as demonstrated in this video. The AI will always prioritize transport units, even ignoring your own infantry capturing their HQ. I don't know if this was changed in AW2 and later games.
I always wonder why the AI has such a spite against Transport units to the point they would literally beeline into a trap to kill one
Wow, this is my first time seeing an AW video. For some reason, I thought these games were quite different from what they truly are. Makes me want to try one XD (and well, I'm a FE fan, so...). Thank you for the awesome video!
Oh man... This was a painful level. Advance Wars has been generally very fair with it's difficulty. Even when you realize Fog Of War didn't affect opponents like it did you, things were often still doable when you logically work things out. But this one is everything but logical. There's just no way to do it yourself without trial and error or a bunch of lucky guesses.

I love it when people go into analysis videos like this! Even though you're showing off the map and gameplay, it's still super cool to see your mindset and then have everything work with your script! Andy: what's an airport again?
Me: why even 'sigh' airports is for making air units
I played the first few levels of this and wasn't impressed. Does the game get better? For now, it seems like mostly just tutorial, tutorial, tutorial.
Teh Apeman Those levels are pretty boring, but it does get better. Give it a bit more time, these types of games aren't always the most accessible, but once they get their claws in you, they become seriously addictive.
Teh Apeman Advanced Wars is sorta like "Super simple mode" Fire Emblem. It takes out most of the advanced gameplay (No RPG stats, no elemental RPS, just units with Strengths and weaknesses versus each other).
The Game starts out slow, with simple tutorials, but once you get into it, it doesn't hold your hand anymore. I think it's around Mission 5 in game one, and Mission 4 in AW2. Later on, you start getting more advanced units and the game gets much tougher.
TheShadowlord90 I'd say it's more like a "No RNG" Fire Emblem.
Teh Apeman modern comba. Statistical and precise. Instead of relying more on the experience and equipment of your men.

When you expect a STRATEGY game player to have their formation look like male genitilia even when that disregards the concept of flanking, you are asking for bad jokes.
Oh god, this mission isnt even fun kind of difficult it is cheap and if you dont do it EXACTLY how the devs planned then it is impossible! Should be called players error because of the amount of mistakes you will make before you finally figure out how to do it, and by figure out i do of course mean look up a guide online!
Personally i think there was a lack of QA on this level on hard. they just added more units and fog of war and called it a day.
