Worst Levels Ever # 19

- Unfortunately, although there are a lot of fantastic levels in games, there are also a fair bunch of awful ones. In this series, I talk about the levels that ticked me off or bored me senseless.
For episode 19, we're taking a closer a look at gym puzzles from Pokemon rather than the leaders.
I will mostly pick levels from games I otherwise like for this series. These are the levels that stand out the most and can bring even the best games down. Игры
What bothers me the most about Lt. Surge's puzzle is how the switches apparently move, especially when they move to cans you've already checked. He's probably using a control panel in the back room and giggling like a maniac as he moves them.
The worst thing is how you can’t find the 2nd Switch until you hit the first.
To think the TwitchPlaysPokémon guys solved vermilion puzzle in their first try... even though they still struggle getting to the other side of a ledge.
Up
I am more amazed by the fact they caught Zapdos, under anarchy.
Never play down the power of anarchy. Never.
Excuse the bad joke, but Lt. Surge's gym was just trash.
i guess the textbox didnt mean the trash inside the bins
Oliver Lonsdale Lol you guys got unlucky, I got the switches in two bins next to each other! Right by the entrance, too!
I've seen a guy lose 5min in a pb pace run due to that dumb puzzle
That joke was garbage.
Anto RetroGamer wow grreat pun
hmm vermillion gym? let me see...
nope, there's only trash here
NGAH!
Papyrus The greatest no
Using Curse on Whitney's Miltank... fuck... if only I thought of that 15 years ago. Thanks git, thanks for showing me that the evil Miltank can be defeated easily.
yea i got s 20 something level croconaw but that miltank keeps destroying it
During a nuzlocke on HG recently, I had a Ghastly and I used Curse on the Miltank after a few minutes of putting a strategy because the main problem is that Miltank have the ability Scrappy so Ghastly isn't safe. Yet, this is the quickest way to deal with Miltank, if Ghastly can survive long enough, because she has a freaking high defense.
I was doing a nuzlocke and Rock type were forbidden for my team so I had to do something else..
Cebra it was easy for me without curse
It actually was the second least hardest for me
You also get a Machop in trading by getting a drowzee (in the route before goldenrod) and trading the Drowzee for the machop whos trainer is a hiker in the goldenrod mart.
Its the best way to handle Whitney... as proven by git
Kamek's spell, The Hammer Bros. from Super Mario; the Metronome attack from Pokémon. Luck-based enemies are almost as bad as escort missions, almost.
First trash can i check: Hey, there's a switch here! PRESS IT.
Next one: Hey, another switch! The motorized door opened!
How about that.
First time I played FR on the GBA, it actually took me a week to get through Surge's gym just because the second button was always in a different bin. It was torture.
I am not ashamed to say I use Save States when I replay it. Never again will I put myself through such pain.
Nope! There's
only trash here.
Hey! The electric
locks were reset!
Wattson was a living nightmare for me because I didn't get a gravaler/geodude.
The only way I even remotely won that was my kirilia spamming calm mind and double team, then using confusion and hope they die.
I think Wattson is a really underrated gym leader as far as difficulty goes. If you don't have Marshtomp or Geodude, then he's an absolute nightmare. It's probably the only time Mud Sport will come in useful, as I found out in my Zigzagoon only run.
Could you talk about the Sky Pillar puzzle from RSE? That puzzle makes me rage every time. Or any of the mach bike puzzles, so the Mirage Tower.
i don't think optional levels are usually included in this series. the only time the sky pillar is mandatory is when you go to awaken rayquaza in emerald, and you don't need a mach bike to climb up the first time. you only need to do the annoying mach bike puzzle if you want to catch rayquaza, which is technically a sidequest.
the heartome city gym in gen 4 is both my favorite and least favorite gym in the franchise. the changes made to it in platinum were fucking awesome, especially with how before it was just a series of math questions a three year old could solve.
Sabrina's Gym is so easy with this trick... (If you haven't memorized where they warp to...) the warp tiles... keep going to the warp tile left or right from your current tile. If the warp tile you are on is to the left of the room, go to the warp tile to the right of the room. Works every time.
Worst Gym is Lt. Surge's, Candice's, Maylene's, hands down.
Best Gym (my favorite) hass to be Jasmine's Gym. All joking aside, my favorite is Blaine's Gym. (Gen. 1 and 3). Maybe even HG/SS's version.
Adresadini Yeah, that might work... but it's good practice if you want to train up for the leader.
hearthome city gym anyone? wanna do some MAFF?!
329link Yeah, that was more of guessing game for me. They completely changed it in Platinum, however.
DLC Dude yeah that platinum change makes me so happy
Sootopolis' Gym made me smile when I first saw it in Omega Ruby because it reminded me of a minigame from Club Penguin, which I played all the time as a kid. It was basically a more complex version of the gym puzzle there.
How to make a hard gym boss -
Make them use lure and make your best Pokemon fall in love with them or its called some other move idk
Attract
how to make a hard gym boss: platinum fantina
1:36 Very simple solution really... Every Pokémon Gym has been created by the time lords, they are in their own specific pocket dimensions like the TARDIS. That's why they're bigger on the inside.
Case closed, pokémon architects are Time Lords.
#Pokéwhoconfirmed
I thought the same thing some weeks ago :D
XD
+trumpf trottel hey, ya never know, when you can travel through all of time and space, the world of Pokemon is a possibility
RLCLONED
True, but I wonder where the Tardis is
We haven't had a London based Region yet, so probably there
When you brought up Snowpoint Gym, bad memories came back.
I'm surprized that you never mentioned that the puzzle is active again in the remakes of the 2nd gen even though it didn't exist originally. A personal favorite of mine are the spinning puzzle puzzles of Blue's gym, it allows you to head straight to him with minimal battling if you look ahead and see which way each direction takes you.
I got stuck doing trial and error on the hole gym because I kept forgetting where the holes were. Equally relieved and frustrated when I tilted the screen back to put the system down and noticed 1 pixel wide dots outlining the pathway.
One of my fav gyms is the Driftveil gym (BW2).
As someone who searches most if not all the trash cans just to have it reset 3-5 times before finally getting it, I can't agree more.
If you ask me, Morty looks a lot like a surfer dude.
To be honest, I have NEVER had any trouble with Vermillion Gym. It takes me like 30 seconds to find the two locks.
Ugh, I hate you. I'm never that lucky.
-I don't even play Pokemon-
Same here. Maybe FireRed/LeafGreen made it different/easier?
ive never played pokemon red/blue/yellow
+D MAS "Ugh. You Get The Puzzel in 30 Seconds in a Game i Don't even Play. i Hate You."
@Avi
No they didn't. Can confirm.
Just in case people need this, for Vemillion's Gym puzzle, after you get the first switch, save. The switch does not reset per save. Also in Gen 1, the puzzle is broken as 50% of the time the second switch is in the top left bin.
I can speak for you being Lt. Surge's Gym for hours because of that puzzle. My little kid mind couldn't understand that complex puzzle
I actually loathed the Sootopolis Gym puzzle for a long time, because it took me like 6 months to 1 year to figure out I had to step on each ice tile once. I pretty much every time I'd run straight up like an idiot only to fall down.
After I figured it out however, I actually _really_ liked that puzzle.
Snowpoint City is my personal nightmare :'D
A game of the ice puzzles? Polarium is pretty close to it.
Lt. Surge is the Trashman! That's his character! He throws trash all over the gym! And then, he starts eating garbage! And then he picks up the Raichu and he bashes the trainer over the head!
...And people wanted an Origins version of Red and Blue. Can you believe it?
I never really liked the Sootopolis gym puzzle. Made me angry.
2:21 And trying to get there with your pokemon fully healed is worse.
Pd. Same with fire gym leader in Pkm Ruby, Saphyre or Emerald
When I first got to this gym I was like I am out
I know this video is two years old, but I did the math. The chance of you successfully finding both switches in Lt Surge's gym consecutively is 1/240
Ahhh, the old memories of when i played Pokemon Emerald, Pokemon Platinum and pokemon Heartgold...
You just made my night!
What a funny thing you mention Vermillion City, since that one puzzle got me trying some few times (5? 10? More?) and to make matters worse, I always had my ass handed by the gym leader due to Raichu using Double Team and my pokemon failing to hit the final hit. The solution? Catch two Diglets in the Diglet cave and problem solved.
By the way, I done it in FireRed.
Only played the first game. Imagine how surprised I was that it was a gym from that one. Now imagine that I had forgot what the gym even WAS. Either it was forgettable, or it was so horrible that I blocked it out of my memory so many years ago.
8:03 that gym was not easy for me , I'm terrible with those kinds of puzzles. I actually had to have a friend help me....
I liked the fast start in your video.
The ORAS version of soopopolis is way easier because the puzzles that u already beat don't reset and you can move diagonally which makes for more than one way to win.
What makes this worse is running into the video game designers in some random building, in each game. Makes gym adventures much more satisfying lol...
Huh, I never had any problem with that gym at all. In fact, when I saw Lt. Surge in the thumbnail, I thought you were going to talk about how the way you have to go through to get the HM just so you can get on the gym was tedious, not the gym itself.
I didn't even know the switches reseted themselves until some time ago, when a friend told me. Maybe I'm just a bit of a lucky bastard.
That's like thinking Seth from FE8 is terrible because every time you played he would always miss and get bad level ups. Due to luck, it can happen.
THE LIGHTNING AMERICAN
-only in Kanto
I can never understand his name. The world of Pokemon is based on our own, but shouldn't he be called, in retrospect, the lightning Unovan?
Apparently in Gen 1, assuming the bin wasn't on this space, there is a 25% chance that the top-left bin has the second switch. Does that make things better or worse?
Will you check out Aegis Cave from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky?
The problem is that you have to collect certain stones from the Unown, this dungeon can be from Pathetically Easy to Unforgivingly Hard.
I agree. I mean one time the Unown I was looking for was in some water and I was trying to lead it out of the water but my partner killed it and the stone was in the water and... I'm not a water type so I can't go in it.
I hated the Mossdeep Gym in Ruby & Sapphire
In the The Legend of Zelda's Oracles series there are some puzzles like that ice tiles one and they are quite harder. After all, they involve an entire square room of a dungeon. I remember having some problems with them.
You should do a worst level ever about paper mario sticker star. You know, from the part that bowser gets the royal sticker untill the part that mario defeats bowser.
Lol, yeah. But if I had to choose a worst part, I'm going with Chapter 3. That was one of the most boring, tedious, annoying, unfun, unrewarding, repetitive and dull locations from anything I've ever played. I felt my soul dying a little every time a Wiggler part ran off.
That's the whole game. And the game is good.
Sticker Star is abysmal.
Did you even play it?! The game's just mean. Not bad.
I did.
The worst gym for me would be the Snow Point gym.
Oh god, the Snowpoint Gym. Here come the flashbacks.
Also, in Diamond/Pearl, if you were a young kid without a calculator in Fantina's gym... have fun!
?
Funnily, the Poketch had a calculator app to help you out.
Hmm? I didn't knew about what the Calculator did on Fantina's gym! What did it do?
Vermilion Gym is the only time I cheat and use the "Walk Through Walls" code whenever I emulate R/B/Y on my computer, I hate dealing with that bullshit :/
Lt.Surge must have a bone with speedrunners.
Saying how long it has been since you hinted about another Advance Wars-based Worst Levels Ever...
I have a suggestion to some that might be the hardest in the series.
The Hard Campaign in AW2 and Crystal Calamity for AWDS would be good places to look.
you could do a video of dullahan from golden sun, without summons and maybe even in hard mode!
Isn't the second switch closer to the door, up first? Because in every single example whoisthisgit showed it seemed to be the case. But I haven't played the game though. I also think the first switch is random.
I find the fight something different. Lt. Surge and Koga are the murderous haters that crash on you using their pokemon. Not like Koga's maze is any fun either! For the two (in my opinion) weakest types, they sure know how to crush your soul.
Glad to know I'm not the only one who hates Vermillion Gym's puzzle.
To be honest, I HATED the Sootopolis City gym puzzle.
If Git liked some of those puzzles at the end, then you might want to play Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals. The dungeons in that game are chock full of puzzles like that.
3:42 Oh hey, "the Lightning American", it's Kempf from FE 5. (God I hate the translation patch for that game and it's memes)
Did you know about pokemon mystery dungeon explorers of sky, and red and blue mystery dungeon coming to wii u virtual console? It's happening tomorrow.
Petalburg Gym is probably my favorite but I may be a little biased since one of my favorite pokemon moments was when I beat the leader by having Azumarill build up Rollout on the first two pokemon & obliterate everyone after that.
funny thing, my first time playing the switch puzzle, I found the two correct bins on my first try, I later discovered that I got stupidly lucky
Oh, and don't get me started on how the flipping flip to get to the final gym city. Urgh.
GO TO THE TOP OF MOUNT CORONET AND CATCH PALKIA! There are no hints :(
And my LEAST favorite bosses in Black and White ARE... Elesa and Burgh. Y'know why?
SAMUROTT 4 LIAF!
I hate Elesa more though, cuz I have to learn stupid DIG, faint those Emolgas by complete luck in 1 hit... and Burgh's just a bit annoying. Luckily though, I learned a Bug-Type move, which Burgh's pokeymanzz are weak to. Elesa is so hard for me though, and she just POLISHES the freakin' floor with my pokemon, so before then, I would recommend catching a Ground-Type Pokemon, and just start grinding pokemon with it. >:) Then give Elesa what she deserves for me. Actually, when I played Black 2, I think the entire battle with Elesa was MUCH easier, since I knew MUCH more powerful moves, and in my opinion BURGH was harder! Heck, I beat the Dragon-Type Champion in 1 TRY! Beat THAT! But, and I shouldn't get too cocky, but the champion in Black 1 is, I think Fire-Type or Bug-Type. But, unlike Black 2, you actually don't get the credits until, spoiler alert, you beat N. (because his name is actually (looking it up) umm, WTF? His full name is Natural Harmonia Gropius. Wow, that's kinda excessive, Nintendo.) and Ghestis. I still can't get over N's name. Are his initials frikkin NHG? And if he went to school, he'd be the last one to finish the test.
Whoa. I should make a video off this.
"GO TO THE TOP OF MOUNT CORONET AND CATCH PALKIA! There are no hints :("
...Dude, *it was part of the plot.* Didn't Cyrus say he was going to Mt. Coronet after you beat him the first time? O_o
Me: laughs in gameshark walk-thru-wall
yea i hated vermilion city's gym also and i always had a problem with the sootopolis gym puzzle lol it wasn't that it was hard i just always forgot the third part of it lol
You should go over a mission from Patapon 2, feel free to pick, since most of them are rather tedious.
My hardest gym puzzle was the one in Pastoria City in Platinum. When my friends and I were kids it took us a MONTH to figure out how to do( back then we didn't want to look up a guide, we found it cheating)
I, on the other hand, had problems with the Gym Leader. Wake kicked my ass _several times_ when I first played the game a few years ago. The hardest part was his Quagsire, mostly due to Yawn and only being weak to Grass, which I had none of.
Oh Arceus, I hate that gym puzzle!
+Yanna Oh? Hey Yanna! How are You Doing?
...what gym puzzle?
Homosuck Garbage The one where you have to look in the trash cans
Yanna Oooohhhhh, that one.
Homosuck Garbage in Vermillion City.
Never liked vermillion city's gym puzzle. It was always based on luck and chance! I hated that!
I've never seen that strategy for Whitney before.
Something I always do with Sabrina's gym is to just keep going up or down and never cross to the left or right. It takes a while, but you do go through every room before getting to Sabrina so it's good if you want to battle everyone.
As for Surge's gym... Ugh. The best you can do is just keep clicking on a corner until the RNG cooperates and lets the first switch be there, then you have a 50% chance to hit the second. It's annoying for sure. It wouldn't be so bothersome if it wasn't just a reality-bending crapshoot. Every time you click a wrong bin, the right bin gets re-rolled. Total bogus.
These gym battles would be far harder and potentially better if you either weren't allowed to leave or if you did leave everything including the trainers reset, to prevent people from just farming the trainers, make it so they only give out EXP once.
As much as I LOVE Gen 4, I will admit I HATE Candice's Gym Puzzle
Have you played the new translation for Genealogy of the Holy War yet?
There's a new translation l?!?! Where?!?!?
I would love to play it.
Kenny Polit
Look up Project Naga
Ahh yes, I remember that gym battle MIDI from Doom
I think its from pokemon stadium actually
There are many games similar to the Sootopolis gym. For example Vlak, Hexahop, some levels of Gruntz.
pokemon X/Y has a warp tile gym as well, it took me way too long to beat.
Final boss of sonic unleashed always had me stabbing myself in the head for some reason.
That remix though! What was that remix in the beginning!!??
Soos Phangoma that would be pokemon stadium bro the first one
This gym being called "American" is unfortunately a reality now
You wanna know something great? In the GBA version if you find the switch on the top row there's two possibilities for the second switch. The first and most likely is that the second switch is on the far left. The other possibility is that it doesn't fucking exist.
6:32 I didn't understand that gym while I was a kid because I had a german version of the game and didn't know what everything meant.
I still have no idea how I beat it lol
the fastest way to beat vermilion gym is after finding the first switch look into the can in the upper left corner. If the can with the 1st switch had three cans next to it, the odds of finding switch 2 in this can are 25%, else 50%. It's the fastest way.
yeah... that snowpoint gym puzzlE is just frigging frustrating... i played the gsme myself so i know what you mean... but hey at least it matches the theme of the gym?
Do you plan on playing Bloodstained when it comes out?
7:58 try looking into a game called "Epic Battle Fantasy 5"... the "walk once" puzzles as the EBF wiki calls them are far from the bulk of the game (its a JRPG, and a pretty good and funny one at that) but theres a healthy number of them placed sporadically (along with some block pushing and sliding ice puzzles) and while some of them arent too hard theres a healthy number of them that are fairly challenging (and every last one of them are completely and utterly optional and only serve to give you extra loot just in case they wind up being TOO challenging)
I also have trouble with Lt. Surge more than Whitney in my journey thru all regions ive been to (kanto, johto, heonn, sinnoh, whatever blk and wht gives us, and alola) but Crasher Wake gave me the most trouble in my opinion cuz u HAVE to fight the trainers and u have to go back and forth just to tlk with him. I know, I know...yall may be hatin but its ya bois opinion.
Are we able to request bad levels? If so I got one REALLY poor level design and long and painful and SUPER annoying level. It's Aghast By The Mast In Night Of 100 Frights
vermillion gym?
almost every time (i don't remember) i find the first i get the second right
5:03 Your move, TGH.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN ITS RIGHT NEXT TO THE FIRST ONE? OMG! IF I KNEW THAT MY LIFE WOULD BE MUCH EASIER
You should do an episode on Aegis Cave from PMD2.
Yes that dungeon was so stupid. It makes me question why developers put dumb levels like this in video games, do they really think we'd enjoy those levels?
Whoisthisgit can you do a Kingdom Hearts video?
Thanks.
The most useless character in gaming:donald duck
It should include Demyx, that man is a bitch to beat.
DANCE WATER DANCE! DANCE WATER DANCE!
Claudia Tio in the kingdom hearts manga,he nearly beats sora
Aces 123 A Boss Analysis, if you will.
Drayden's gym in B2W2 is the best in the series and no one can convince me otherwise
Well, it's kinda hard to top fighting dragon staircases...
Okay so this is actually another comment for the 1st worst level, but I hope whothisgit is actually happy that the 20th anniversary game actually has that automatic gift Pokémon to send to boxes
nice video
If you like 'trace all the tile games', you should play LoZ: Oracle of Ages... There's one tile-trace game in that one that's _really_ fucking stupid and made me hate that kind of puzzle forever. God.
not to forget....DOUBLE TEAM well i suffered but yeah he rarely does that but yeah DOUBLE TEAM!!
I feel like the next one should be a level and/or mission from Sonic '06, unless you've done those already...
