Worst Levels Ever # 9

- Unfortunately, although there are lots of fantastic levels and stages in video games, there are also a fair few awful ones. This time, we take a look at another hated mission from the Advance Wars series.
I will more likely pick bad levels from games that I otherwise enjoy. These are the ones that stick out the most and can bring good games down.
This video is a follow-up to Worst Levels Ever # 7. See the video here: • Worst Levels Ever # 7
Please no suggestions/requests for any possible future episodes. There are two reasons why I ask this:
1. This video is all a matter of opinion. What might be my least favourite level of all time might be your most loved and vice versa. I'm hardly going to want to bash a level I love, am I?
2. I'm tired of getting requests or suggestions, and in this case, there's an especially large pool of choices, because just about every game ever has stages, levels and maps.
Just a random note about S Ranking this mission without cheating, anyone messed up enough to attempt this, you should know something about how Advanced Campaign handles S Ranks: Power and Technique don't matter, only Speed. You're always counted as getting 100% Power and Technique on Advanced Mode.
Yeah, the game EXPECTS you to get slaughtered so much it doesn't penalise you for losing units. That should tell you something.
Thank the good lord the sequels dropped this and Battalion Wars avoided it as well.
Especially since it meant the "flawless strategy" required to S Rank most Advanced Campaign missions was to let your entire army get slaughtered as bait while one infantry makes its way to capture the HQ. I wouldn't exactly call that a good military operation.
People like GipFace would. That's what makes the likes of him sadists.
I think the biggest issue in the series' balance is failure to provide good Counter Play. It overrelied on defensive charging and then removed that without realizing why it could have been needed. Days of Ruin still has Artillery spam being rewarded, ugh.
So much for being rewarded for actually destroying things and keeping the welfare of your forces in check...
the issues on the ranks and how the levels are designed is the reason why I only play AW2, even this late down the line
Haha, let's just have a pointless war with tons of real infantry and vehicles. You know, just for old times sake.
and it's Days of Ruin...of ALL games...to finally explain that the units are "Automated" (despite somewhat graphic detail about soldiers dying in the fight).
At least Dual Strike HINTS at it being all a game with Lash's comment...but then again, it's Lash...so you never really know with her.
(Well, that and Sami's comment about Drake's CO power being "Against the rules". Which also implies the whole thing is just a very realistic and politically deciding game. Kind of like Yu-Gi-Oh or Pokemon.)
LoLmanX You know what would be really funny? If they settled the rivalry with a good old fist fight.
Andy would just hit Eagle in the face with his wrenches and call it a day.
The Ugly Barnacle XD! Sometimes I wonder if that's what they'd ultimately do when they meet face to face. Notice how every time a CO is beaten, they always run away before being confronted. AW takes no prisoners of war except for what Lin did to Greyfield in DoR.
Mario Mastar Or what Gheyfield did to the Lazurians before then.
Dual Strike gets cheesy about the whole thing anyway, even having Surrounded have its cleanup phase be pathetically slow to the point where you have to wonder why Kindle just stands there and only abandons the Andy clone to his demise when the Allied Nuts *FINALLY* grab the last Communication Tower, rather than do the retreating as soon as the Bolt Guard's units are wiped out clearly long before the time limit runs out. I admit Dual Strike pisses me off anyway, but when the story has Black Hole bounce back from being defeated VERY badly again and again, and in very cheesy manners at that, it's begging to collapse under its own weight.
This may be late, but that's probably the reason why I love DoR way better than the trilogy. 2nd game, however, did put a heavy weight on losses and sacrifices (aside from the Orange Star's involvement and storyline). DoR felt that even if we did win, there had been a lot of sacrifices. Heck, one mission, civilians fight. That, and I can actually see the commander in spite the age. The thing in the trilogy, I began to question "How did this kid became a commander?".
Enemy Turn 1 on Rivals in the Advance Campaign is officially the most scary noise in existence the first time around.
You've spent your turn desperately trying to get yourself some buildings with your dinky force, thinking, hoping that this won't be too much of a difficulty jump, and then suddenly WHEEEEEEN WOCKAWOCKA WHIIIRRRRRR WHIIIIIRRRRR WHEEEEEEN as your impending doom flies (and trundles) towards you and there isn't a thing you can do about it. Your jaw drops in horror. You can't see them coming. But you know they're coming. You know they're closing in, and you know there's a metric fuckton of them, and there are more on the way.
One Week Wizard Where's Optimus Prime and Godzilla when you need them?
That onomatopoeia is the funniest thing I've ever seen
Random guy: MUMMM!
Mum of random guy: What son?
Random guy: I just pooped my pants, i need a new pair of underwear.
Mum of random guy: Um, you are 21, why did you poop your pants.
Random guy: Advance Wars, Rivals, Hard mode.
Mum of random guy: Oh.
dual strike , where hard mode si sometimes easier than normal as you could use any broken COs anywhere
Andy: "What's an airport?"
Eagle: "This"
+Tabris Hayayi Andy: "What's an airport?"
Eagle: "Your worst nightmare."
Andy: "What's an airport?"
Eagle: "Your Game Over"
Andy: "What's an airport?"
Eagle: "The one thing that separates me from total world domination, of course!"
Jonas Grandt
Eagle:Wait,that's a port!
Andy: whats an airport
Eagle: hell
You know what would have made this last mission better.
If it was optional.
Then it would have been actually good for the player, so they aren't 360 no scoped by this level unless they really think they are up to the challenge.
Advance Wars: Hardmode is demonicly hard.
Advance Wars 2: Hardmode is actually fair. Still really hard, tho.
Advance Wars Dual Strike: Hardmode is too easy.
Advance Wars Days of Ruin: Doesn't have hardmode.
+Primson Yao Even though there wasn't hardmode on Days of Ruin, the game still felt difficult lol. First time playing it, good God, it was tough.
+wowviewer
And at the end of the day, DoR has some Fake Difficulty and general annoyance going on. Not as much as AWBS, but that doesn't say as much as we'd like.
+Primson Yao Dual Strike's hard mode can be demonic at times. Apparently, all they needed to ramp up the difficulty factor was give Black Hole a Stealth Fighter on Crystal Calamity.
The Ugly Barnacle
Ew. Black Hole having anything more on Cry-stal Crapola.
Actually, why didn't Dual Strike block forces and the extra COs on Hard Campaign to begin with and design the levels around that?
+MBey13 The main reason why Dual Strike's hard mode is easy compare to other games is because the game allows you to pick any CO you have unlocked, including Hachi and Nell. Not to mention you have Sasha, who can drain the enemy CO Star bar to delay if not prevent the enemy Tag Break from happening, AND ability to use skills. Take away the COs from the top two tiers and ban Sasha, and you WILL have a miserable time. Try throwing not using your own Tag Break while you are at it while the enemy CO's will build their Tag Break faster than you can say "airport" because while you control multiple teams, they only control 1 team, so 3 team "turns" will pass, and the total damage is likely to give the enemy its Tag Break.
FREAKING UNBALANCED!
Tell me about the airports, Eagle.
Eagle: Airports are places in control of aerial vehicles. In Advance Wars, that has them deploy air units such as Fighters and Bombers. Speaking of, I have plenty of them, so prepare yourself, Andy, you idiot!
Andy: Heeey! You're not calling me dumb, are you? :(
***** Eagle was supposed to shoot Andy.

"It's kinda hard to tell what's happening when all the cutscenes consist of are character portraits and text at the bottom of the screen."
I agree completely.
Actually, either Grit or Max are both plausible choices for the final mission. But for the right team, you abso-fucking-loutely need Eagle or Kanbei if you want to make the process less painful.
I swear, Advance Wars LOVES to punish the player. AI cheating in fog and Rivals are just two examples...
In that case, Advance Campaign is fucking pick your poison: Kanbei's Error within a given amount of time (have fun), The Final Battle, an already bullshit level on NC WITH Kanbei or Eagle, without Kanbei or Eagle, or Rivals.
What I find really insteresting is how they overcompensated for the computer in Campaign mode, BUT at the same time, made the AI significantly less competent in Campaign. When you challenge the AI in versus mode, they seem to be much smarter, but still at a disadvantage of the player being all around smarter. (Max spamming Artillery)
I did a match with Grit against Max on Coral Lagoon. Max almost beat me actually except for one trick. Grit when on the Orange Star HQ can actually hit the Blue Moon HQ and factories from the safety of his side with Rockets, while even if Grit were on Blue moon's side, he couldn't hit Orange Star that safely. Therefore, every unit Max summoned was guaranteed to be bombed and start with 7 or less HP.
Also Eagle's weakness really shows when he has to actually WORK for the units. I had Eagle on my team against Max and Kanbei. Eagle was doing terribly even with Lightning Strike. I (using Grit) had to bail him out three times before both of us finally started to take Kanbei down together (Max wasn't a threat to me at all. I kept blowing him up with Rockets, but Kanbei was right next to me...so he was always in my shadow). Yet Kanbei, when he has to buy his units (in all three games), is actually FAR more powerful than he seems. Because of the extra defense AND attack power, he takes at least 1 more hit from most of your units than most other COs would, giving him that extra turn to raise the extra cash needed to summon more units. A Late game Kanbei is VERY hard to hold back, but Eagle...without a ton of Fighters and Bombers pre-built for him, he only really weakens himself when he uses his power.
So that's what I found fascinating. The AI being made so OP in Campaign mode, but completely moronic really shows they were overdoing it and using that as an excuse to miss out on how to actually balance the CO's properly. (E.g. Making Eagle, Max and Sturm look Stupid OP, Sonja extremely competent, and Kanbei, Sami, and Andy look underwhelming. The ONLY character who's as hard in Versus as they are in Campaign, despite the buffing, is Grit.)
The Ugly Barnacle it like fire emblem awakening lunatic+ diffucilt
RAVAGEGHOST147 Ah, I think it was Alakule (one of the large 4P maps, mostly land with small rivers in between and Yellow Comet having the largest segment of land on the bottom right), and I as Grit was Orange Star, Blue moon was Max, Green Earth was Kanbei, and Yellow Comet was Eagle. Me and Eagle were on a team, and Max and Kanbei were on a team. No Fog or weather
I think the problem was that Eagle starts off with so much land, but since it takes so long for him to get his power, by the time he got it, he didn't have many units to take advantage of it. At one part, he actually placed his damaged fighter on his only airport and just sat there for 5 turns to heal it up instead of building more bombers. That set him back heavily.
Eagle CAN be good in the right hands, but you have to be careful about timing Lightning strike to make the most of it, otherwise, a defensive player who expects it will make sure Eagle wastes it so they can take advantage of the lower defense power and oneshot most of his air units. Probably the best use of Lightning Strike is cleverly placed Rockets to get two hits in, particularly in a Fog map.
Also, in a recent fun match I did, it was the one with the rivers that aren't bridged, so you had to use air units or capture bases to really attack the others. Eagle let me capture the airport and built a TON of land units around his base that ended up being completely useless. (same set up as before except I was Sturm...AW1 sturm is SO underpowered, especially against Kanbei). But he DID really cripple Max with his rockets and Missiles, so I was proud of Eagle for that. Lousy Air commander, but GREAT with Indirects in that match.
RAVAGEGHOST147 You have to remember one thing: Colin's units may be weak offensive-wise, but their defense is unaffected. So defense-wise, he has no weaknesses in that department.
Eagle's weakness is nonexistent on most maps that don't place emphasis on naval warfare. Kanbei's weakness is the ages-old philosophy of having to spend more if you want more quality.
So Eagle wants to challenge Andy to see who is a better CO but gives himself a massive advantage with a map designed for him, starts with more units and more properties.
That's like LeBron James challenging Ronaldo to a one on one basketball game to see who is a better athlete and shooting him in the leg first.
It's funny how instead of giving you normal advice, Nell just says "I've taught you all I knew!".
Not even Nell knows how to handle this shit...
Andy: Nell, how am I supposed to handle thi-
Nell: *Packing her bag* I've taught you everything you need, you can do this, bye! 😅
Advanced Wars normal campaign leaves some room for mistakes here and there.
Hard Mode on the other hand basically requires you to play flawlessly. It's so meticulous with how you HAVE to play, that honestly, I don't take any enjoyment out of it personally. After all; it's one thing to play your own way, make mistakes, and learn from it. It's another to basically HAVE to follow a guide with specific instructions on how to move units, just to not get wiped by the unfairly large army the enemy starts with on Hard Mode.
Couple small notes..not to lecture or anything, just felt like saying.
After you finish Advance Campaign and get Sturm yourself, his strength and weakness are flipped. He gains +30% Defense, at the cost of -20% offense. His Meteor Strike is nerfed to doing 4 HP instead of 8 as well. The no terrain costs still apply.
Also in this game's AC, there are no scores for Power and Technique. They will automatically always be full, so the only factor for an S rank is speed. This makes survival missions basically automatic S-ranks if you survive. So the biggest obstacle to getting S in AC Rivals (besides surviving at all...) is just winning fast enough.
Of course, who am I to talk. I can't even finish the first AC mission without an HQ bumrush.
Also curious question, who's your favorite CO to use? (Limited to just this first AW for simplicity)
I knew Sturm has different stats for campaign and Versus mode, but I didn't think it was necessary to go over for the video.
My favourite in Advance Wars 1 is probably Max, because his direct units are so damn powerful. In Advance Wars 2, I don't know, Sturm himself maybe, but I'd feel bad at the time since he's overpowered in the extreme. Sasha is definitely my favourite in Dual Strike, because nothing's cooler than preventing your enemy from using CO powers. In Days of Ruins, Waylon or Tabitha. Waylon because it's amusing to see how little damage his air units take when he uses his CO power, and Tabitha because having such a powerful unit early on can make her deadly. I bet Caulder is a lot of fun to use, but he's even more broken than AW2 Sturm.
whoisthisgit I've always been a fan of Eagle and Kanbei, I'm a bomber freak. Same with second game, but I also really enjoyed Sonja from her buffs, and Jess. Dual Strike it was mainly the same. Days of Ruin...hard to pick. I enjoyed Gage and Brenner. Also agreed on beyond broken Caulder. I believe he was even banned on Wi-Fi for that.
I didn't mean to sound like you didn't know about flipped Sturm, though. Just random info for others that didn't.
LionPrinceX8 In Dual Strike im thinking Colin when i decide im bored and just play a game against ai with maximum money settings. Funny how good money is in the AW series... But if it were serious play Jake.
Ben Russell If you want to be really cheap in a normal game go Colin Kanbei, Colin buys the units cheap then Kanbei switches in and trains them to be op.
coolgabe555 That does seem like a dick move... I like it!
Are we all ready to have Eagle kick the shit out of us again... in HD?
Hopefully they rework the levels a bit in the remake.
@@329link From what's shown in the trailers so far, most (if not all) of the levels will retain the same design as the classic counterparts.
The Final Battle:
On the left side, if you choose Max on Max Strikes!, you get Grit. If you choose Andy for Max Strikes! and then complete Olaf's Navy by defeating all of his units, you get Olaf. If you choose Andy for Max Strikes! and then complete Olaf's Navy by capturing his HQ, you get Max. As whois said, Max is the best for the left side. Also, as whois said, as long as you don't get Grit, you are fine.
On the right, if you complete Kanbei Arrives! in 8 days or less, Mighty Kanbei! in 10 days or less, and Kanbei's Error? in 12 days or less, you get Kanbei. If you use Andy for Captain Drake!, Naval Clash! and Battle Mystery!, you get Drake. And as whois said, if you use Sami for the missions Captain Drake!, Naval Clash!, Wings of Victory! and Battle Mystery!, you get Eagle. If none of those requirements are met, you get Sami. If you meet Kanbei's and Drake's requirements, you get Kanbei. If you meet the requirements for Eagle and Kanbei, you get Eagle.
As whois said, as long as you don't get Sami, it's cool. For the normal campaign, Kanbei is definitely your best bet. On the Advance Campaign, Kanbei is very hard to get, and Eagle is definitely not good because of, well, what this video explains. Go with Drake. He is not impossible to get, and nothing bad happens if you use him. While there are no Naval units, he is better than Sami, and his CO Power really comes in handy.
Damn, as whois said. Super powers weren't available in Aw1, imagine that though. you can use Sami's SCOP and win easily.
I'm very late, but i like more Grit, not Max to the last mission
Man i completed the last mission (Normal Campaign) With the "Worst COs"
@@endeavorrattata7839 There's still a cheese strat to S Rank with Sami on Advance campaign. You just have to be a master of infantry baiting and using Sami's rapid capture mechanic. Sturm, it turns out, is awful at protecting his own home base.
To quote AVGN: What were they thinking?!
Now to watch the video in Holy Dante's comment.
I remember this mission, I had Grit and Sami. Sami's job was to build mech units and keep them grouped in the bottom corner to bait meteor strike [it worked every time] then just get a bunch of Tcopters and load up and try to land on as many bases as possible and hope some of the units survived to maybe take a base and the other two just held Strum at bay as best they could.
This video game thought of you using the best weapon to defeat the main villain and decides use it against you? Man that's a sucker punch. It's like the shiny-armor-thing from Majora Mask becoming sentient and attacking Link after the Mask's defeat.
This mission shows up in one or two of the AW2 romhacks. I think War Room Challenge?
But one of your airports is turned into a port. You know, because it's more fun that way.
On the plus side, no fog and you start with an AA or something else nice depending on your CO. Grit gets a Missile, Drake gets two Cruisers, and Kanbei actually starts without the AA. Fun times.
I haven't even played the first Advance Wars but I really enjoy the way you make your videos and it keeps me watching.
Honestly this mission on hard mode seems like a level your friend would create to play with you in the second game just to piss you off. Holy hell, designers.
GeneralCane Even the first Hard Campaign mission falls under that category because it all evolves into a HQ bumrush.
Scratch that, the ENTIRE Hard Campaign was designed to piss you off.
Andy:what's an airport?
Eagle:your hell
the funny thing is, i heard in reboot camp this mission is only unlockable when you clear all missions in the main campaign of aw1... plus you unlock COs as you clear missions in reboot camp instead of must having them join the final battle , so its probably not as bad in reboot camp
Sadly I couldn't do this mission because my Ds Lite broke in the middle of the final battle.... My heart literally was crushed by a meteor that day.... And the worst part was that after several attempts, I managed to be winning the battle until THAT happened... T_T RIP Ds Lite.
5:41
Eagle:"hey let's fight for no important reason at all. :D"
Andy:"of course,I always wanted to waste thousands of human life for fun!:D"
Me:"how are you guys aren't fired yet for being a horrible Human being?"
No wonder the Advance Wars subreddshit is full of people who pulled the sort of atrocious bullshit I complained about here:
pastebin.com/g5wZd2AL
Oh, and by the way, if you're wondering about the post date, the original was posted a while back but was deleted because the Advance Wars subreddshit have been trying to censor me.
It's funny, because the first time I ever played this game, I got both Grit AND Sami in the final mission, and was able to beat it by Mech-spamming with Sami and having good distance management with Grit. Knowing what I know now, I'm not surprised I had so many issues.
The advanced version of this match be like:
Andy: "Why do you have a full mobile army already?!"
Eagle: "Because FUCK YOU! I want to win"
That fucking Of Mice and Men reference
Damn you for making my heart ache
+Wakka Flakka Burn The Al Bhed Where?

I honestly just want to say, that scene was hilarious in the movie
There's literally no buildup, no tension, George doesn't even finish tellin' about the rabbits, he just shoots him.
"Here's a rabbit, bitch!"
Directed by Quentin Tartantino
In Reboot Camp, you now have to beat all the missions, even the branching ones to unlock Rivals. THAT is how a bonus level is done! That's like making Darker Side in Super Mario Odyssey mandatory to beat the story.
P.S. you even get a choice of who to use in the final mission.
3 years late but in the 4th game Days of ruin it reveals that all factory spawn troops are remote controlled, drones if you will(except infantry based troops, infantry, mechs, bikes and indirects). The only manned troops are the pre-deploys
It's a easily missed tidbit in the tutorial section of the game. Either way a waste of government funding
Still a questionable explanation, and it's not talked about again anyway.
Eagle gives Andy a lesson on what an airport is that he'll never forget for the rest of his life, and have nightmares about for at least 10 years lol
Hmm... Both AC's are impossible, but comparing both I found the details, which lead to this:
In "Kanbei's Error?", he just ambushes you with nothing but, air units. He also has a lot of Anti-Air defences near his bases to prevent you from ambushing HIS bases. He also has a lot of bases next to his main base, which means, you have about 9 days of the air units destroying your army, before capturing 15 bases, after 9 days, your dead.
In "Rivals!", Eagle is a jerk for 3 reasons...
1. He has more, POWERFUL units to start with, while you have 3 Mechs.
2. He has LOADS of Bombers and Anti-Air Tanks.
3. He doesn't attack on first day, which gives you time, but on second day, your screwed!
So there is the details, if I missed some information, you can reply to this comment.
Thank you.
Plot twist: They're playing on Sturm's computer
Shes...rivals. I remember beating the normal version with no real problems, I struggled more with Sturm than on rivals.
But I could never, EVER beat Rivals on AC. That mission is merciless.
I actually found Sami + Grit to be fairly easy. Mechs and Artillery all day long!
Hey Andy what's your favorite internet browser?
Andy: 8:30
Is there any way to remove the Fog of War via some cheats? To see just how over-the-top Eagle is when you start?
11:19 NVM...
Things I have yet to do in Advanced Wars
1: Beat Final Battle Normal with 10 different combinations of characters (2 down 10 combinations untried)
2: Beat Kanbeis' Error Advance with Andy, Sami, and Max (without step by step guides or saving)
3: Beat Olaf's Sea Strike Advance with Max (Never Tried)
4: Beat Final Battle Advance with 9 different combinations of characters (3 down 7 untried and failed with Andy, Sami, and Grit
5: Beat Rivals Advance
6: Beat Dire Range in War Room with both Grit and Sonja
A chuck of the advance campaign i swear to god wasn't playtested
Yo git, have you played Advance Wars Dual Strike? I haven't see you talking about this one in any video.
+Canal del Sr. Vargas Yes, and I might talk about it someday.
+whoisthisgit If you do talk about it, I look forward to you reviewing Crystal Calamity. It's nowhere near the impossible factor of this level and Kanbei's Error, but I'm sure any player of AW:DS *despised* that mission with an infernal aura of hate.
The Ugly Barnacle
I'll most likely make a Worst Levels Ever for both Crystal Calamity and the first mission in Advance Campaign.
+whoisthisgit Don't forget Pincer Strike. But it's not so much about map design, but rather you're forced to face that fatass Drake.
+whoisthisgit crystal calamity was my first and only game over in the normal campaign, because of the cheap tag power let their infantry cap the silo from like a mile away
oh, and hard mode made it even better by having a stealth constantly harassing the green team without having to worry about fuel because of the obelisk, and the laser that * coughnotmeteorstrike *'s your units if you don't hit a silo within 10 minutes
ummmmmmm what is an airport again?
That's what you get for messing with almost Germany!
What's the music at the end
5:32
Sure, Andy.
It sure is a ton of fun killing each other.
This is an argument to have an Advance Wars Soundfont cover of the tune "Murder" from the 1997 Berserk anime adaptation.
In addition to all the problems pointed out here, the one thing that always struck me about this map was how lazy and unappealing it looked from a design standpoint. It's almost like the developers wanted to add this lovely little bonus at the last second, so they went into the map editor, threw something together in a few minutes, and called it a day. I mean, the map seems to be 30x20 units in size, the islands are haphazardly drawn, and there's almost no variation in terrain. So, it looks and feels like a hasty tack-on, and that's just no fun.
I never made it this far in the Advance Campaign, but just hearing Eagle take that first turn through the fog was making me sweat...
I want to see a TAS of this level to see if an S rank is even possible in the first place.
This isn't a TAS at all, but:
ruclips.net/video/XoP1L8evwDc/видео.html
Jet: That is kinda bull that they make the best option to beat the final boss gives you a nearly impossible battle...
D.V Fighting Force They do indeed go too far with the intended concept. Assuming it could be welcome in the first place.
I think the biggest crime of the map is not having woods.
Fog of war may not affect the AI, but at least I think the AI respects the woods mechanics.
No Mountains either. OR Reefs. Seriously, why couldn't the map have had any heart put into it?
Wait this video is posted 7yrs ago?
Advance Wars-AC Rivals Part 1: Ground Battle
Remember that whole 'Whoever can do AC Rivals without cheats is a God' thing?
Sturn was throwing meteors on battlefiwld before it was cool.
Looking at you Madara Uchiha

Me in my first playtrought
This mission reminds me of the last battle in Ender's Game. You basically have to cap his HQ.
i ended up with Grit and Sami ;'( it was a long battle. i decided to mass produce infantry with Sami and then storm the base leaving the enemy no space to move due to all the infantry everywhere.
I'm doing ac rivals right now and it is not fun.... wondering how long it will even take me to finish this
This is the mission I have next, i have just went back into advance wars 2 for old times sake and finished hard mode, all that is left is 7 war room missions in advance wars 2 and the very last level in advance wars 1, rivals, dear gods i am so sacred
Actual people died for a dumb rivalry o_o
I meant, i beat it, but pretty sure not with s rank. I did need to restart turns a lot, though. There was a very slight rng in the ai that would make their targeting different, so I had to replay turns until the perfect scenario played out. Ofc I cheesed whst I could, clogging paths and using a bunch of infantry meat shields with an air unit inside so I could bait and mow down the air units but he still had a nasty advantage. Tons of effort for small gravitas. Still had fun with the series. I really doubt i got an s rank on rivals with fog on but I probably tried at least. I still remember the map perfectly bc each land mass was a clusterfuck, even needing to use eagles units like apcs to create a deadlock and waiting for the perfect times to let him use lightning strike. Favorite franchise ever for me. Days of ruin waa great in every way even if at first I didn't like it but ended up loving it. It looked like a promising future for AW but it got sacrificed to make waifu simulator in fire emblem. Rip
the only feasible way to beat this: remeber your strategy for beating AC Kanbei's error? Do that except with your HQ and run away
It's no use because Eagle's bombers can easily catch up and even if you manage to kill off his bombers he's still got the 2 MdTanks coming your way. Plus you can't sneak away with a T copter because he can see in FoW and simply send a fighter your way.
Squiddy Dash No seriously, that is the only proven way for winning that. It's actually in game guides.
+Squiddy Dash what if you were to just mass spam transport copters until the fighters ran out of ammo?
then again the battle copters would still get you
Samson B That's what you're supposed to do, to lure the fighters in and destroy em e.e
+Squiddy Dash You're supposed to destroy (or at least weaken) his air force so you can build a capturing force and some air escorts.
You can survive the air assault with a little luck but you will not be able to hold your position on the ground.
I only find legit using cheat codes when you need to farm EXP and you don't want to suffer the tedium.
I won on my first try with grit and sami and... it's annoying too but sami reruns the favor when she captures the enemy bases.
At least in Advance Campaign Kanbai's Error if you survive and stop YC property captures by day 6, it's smooth sailing. I just beat Advance Campaign and thank God I didn't have to do Rivals.
Did Frozen take inspiration from this because Olaf (game) has a special power of snow and in Frozen Olaf is a snowman? Or is it just a coincidence?
Olaf is in general a nordic name, if I'm not mistaken. And nordic guys are those who live in the north. It's cold there. Hope you understand now.
Apparently Olaf is either Russian or Canadian because Blue Moon as a whole draws inspiration from Communist Russia with some hints of Canadian traits.
Eagle used PTSD. It's super effective!
I completely disagree about not using Grit here, since he was one of the easier ones to utilize for clearing out some of the obnoxious mass mech/tank line that Sturm starts building when you start cornering him, and you don't have to clog up the area with direct damage units. That said, Sami is awful on this map (still my favorite CO).
Much earlier on NDS dualstrike AI already play as player rules in fog of war, man!
Do you consider any AW2 levels on this level? I'm curious. I'm going to get to a hard mode playthrough (Finished normal with an A average) soon and I'd like to see the "brutal" levels of that game, if any. Not that I'd be surprised if there weren't, since AW2 is seemingly more polished than the original in terms of balance and design.
I can't really think of any. I think I couldn't beat the AC version of the Neotank Green Earth mission, but it's completely optional, so I didn't try too hard.
uzernamefail The NC final mission is extremely brutal that relies on advanced exploits. The trick to finishing it is to bomber rush with a CO that can one-shot the deathray (Max, Eagle, and Kanbei) and NOT trigger Sturm's Meteor Strike.
And even with those 3 COs, the mission is bad enough as Sturm's troops are literally made of iron.
+The Ugly Barnacle
I never legitimately dealt with Final Front NC. It's too damned big so I just D2D Guide h4x it.
Yeah, you can't grind it because Sturm's units maul your low-cost units and his SCOP invalidates your tech units. He also ignores terrain and is earning more than your 3 bases combined, so that helps. Factoring in the timer and lack of a captureable HQ, effectively half the COs are useless on that map.
Wow. Here I was with my reason for resorting to the D2D Guide being because Final Front is so fucking big at 33x38 (1254 tiles), bigger than any Campaign OR War Room map, including Egg Islands which is 42x28 (1176 tiles). I clearly was not missing much. In retrospect, Final Front NC has plenty of bullshit making the map size more of a problem. Final Front HC is the same size but has plenty of mitigating factors making it perfectly playable.
WITG, if you're reading this, I nominate Final Front NC for a WLE case. Let's see why it, and not FF HC, deserves my nomination:
-Sturm speaking for himself
-Red Star's starting Factories are in the Death Ray's path
-Bullshit center Factory placement
-Black Cannons being a fucking pain for all 3 armies
-Sturm's OTT income
There's probably more too.
Actually, I really liked an Andy/Grit/Eagle setup. I let Andy take the brunt of the attack, but leave the left side of the defensive wall a little weaker and drawn back, maybe even putting some APCs there to draw them in. At the same time, I have Grit set up rockets along that mountain range, take out air units with missiles, and maybe send an artillery unit around the back to get right behind Andy's troops. He specializes in hitting without getting hit, too, which gives him an advantage against Sturm's high attack/low defense. Eagle, I just let do his thing. The big downside to that is...yeah. That comes from Eagle, though, I love Grit.
I've only played it on normal, though, I've never actually played the advanced campaign.
Bubble bobble arcade's level 72 really made me pissed off.. >:(
Fog seemed to have a handicap to the AI in Dual Strike as I haven't seen them do anything that I wouldn't be able to do. It's just that you don't see it when the AI gets ambushed like what happens when you get ambushed. Plus with the Dual Strike AI, having them also break fog of war would be unfair.
It actually kind of helps as the AI in AW2 is STUPID, you can abuse the SHIT out of their downright braindead building habits. Want to shut an enemy AI down on a naval map in AW2, keep killing their landers, the AI will keep building them over OTHER UNITS. Plus have you ever wondered why the AI in AW2 spams foot troops near the end of the game? That's because the AI needs to have a certain amount of infantry on the field. You keep killing them and the AI, despite possibly being able to afford Neotanks will keep building them. You can exploit the SHIT out of the AI in AW1 and 2.
But this mission is bad.
Honestly I just assume that the soldiers or "units" are robots or machines,
I mean, if the devs have not confirmed what's canon or there is nothing in the source material that confirms what's canon, you can just make headcanons and go along with that. Its not like there is anything official saying the units are actually alive soldiers? Right? *Right?*
Except for the parts where soldiers give reports in both 1 and 2, especially in the Sea Fortress Mission in GE in AW2 who are willing to fight and potentially die, and the POW mission in Orange Star with Max, where actual human soldiers are captive.
@@tobex6626 Ah shit.
I guess I was wrong then.
It would be a stretch to say that it took me a whole 2 and a half months to figure out how to beat the eagle stage on hard mode
You have to time everything right from the moveset of the enemy to the creation of your infantry F.ck this level but love the game for making me suffer these 3 months
Lets test it on the nintendo switch
I'd like to counter your story argument on "Rivals!" I'd assume that they were using the remaining forces from Slurm's army to fight, and inevitably die. (I havent beaten advance wars yet so pardon me if I am wrong and Slurm has no other units) I'm just saying, I wouldn't want an enemy in my country and maybe even oppose us.
They're not under Sturm's command. Unfortunately, that's not where I take issue anyway.
i rember playing the easy level of the final level so my strategy was grit to build a bunch of rocket unites so my main army wouldn't be hurt by the meteor strike and use drake to build a Md tank army and have them attack the units that where attacking andy and then andy would build a Md tank army and i would attack sturm until i killed all of his units but i got a bad score
I'd complain about you picking a hard mode level for this, but your reasoning for this one is actually pretty sound.
A game should balance its levels around the hardest difficulty to begin with. Rivals and Kanbei's Error clearly didn't.
Didn't Dual Strike handicap the AI during fog of war like you?
This used to be a comment about a suggestion for this, but since I noticed you're not taking any suggestions I'll just edit it out.
Forsyths bouness is all units in a 5 space radius of his co get + 10% attack and defense but has no co. Use that to your advantage. Also. You know only units in your co zone get the co bounesses right?
You know what would be neat,
if you could skip the battle entirely (it would give you the option to fight or not)
What is the name of the song at the end of the video?
And Why are they sparing with their own troops, geeze, they're human too, yo know.
Are there any of these really bad levels in Advance wars Dual strike?
The first mission of Advance Campaign can be annoying, as can Crystal Calamity, but nothing of this caliber.
whoisthisgit Ah yeah, Crystal Calamity. I always use the Colin-Sasha combo on blue so they can't use CO powers.
TobuscusFan I'd save till I get rockets with Colin-Sasha.
I clear the units
And get the rockets to the vantage point
THEN I BLAST THE CRYSTAL!
Emyel Pascual Thanks for the advice.
Miles The Man It's not that bad if you can sit Recons on Green Earth's missile silos, while killing any infantry that approach.
kanbei's error is easier than the final mission...
and rivals! is insanely hard , done once and i'm never palying its hard mode counterpart again where you have to sneak a transport past all his airforce ans prey he's too dumb to
1- not notice it
2- don't have anything too close that would kill your infantry.
Watch Re-Boot Camp have a version of Rivals for every right-hand CO
I would rather Rivals AC become far less busted in the first place.
@@MasterKnightDH i keep wondering if they gonna like.... balance the game
Mf Game devs Shipping Sami and Eagle day 1
3:06 well... I might have a little problem
Grits not that bad of a choice actually. You can just park his rockets on the mountains and Sturn will be completely zoned out, with his -20% defense any unit in Grits rocket range will either just die outright or will be rendered completely useless.
You dont even need to buy a whole lot of units for Grit so he will likely not get targeted by Meteor Strike.
hey do can you tell what is the best choice for mission 20 without eagle
That depends on if you're doing Normal or Hard Campaign. In Normal, I'd say Kanbei. For Hard, since getting him isn't exactly straight forward, I would say to go for Drake. Drake's air units are crappie, but he does have decent ground forces, and his Tsunami CO Power is good for getting a bit of damage to Sturm.
Your only option is Drake, unless you plan to use a D2D guide to beat Kanbei's Error on AC. On NC though, Kanbei is a monster that rips through Sturm's forces with ease, and he starts out with 4 Mid Tanks, 3 Anti-Airs, and 1 Rocket Launcher. Drake has less, but his predeployed forces should be adequate.
All I can say is this: avoid Sami at ALL FUCKING COSTS unless you want to endure virtual torture. Even on the standard campaign, she's bloody useless and is basically dead weight for the mission.
This game is the least balance of the series... I have not ran into this mission yet... nor do I want to. The Drake missions with Sami are nuts....
Just wondering, have you gotten to Sonja's missions on Advance Campaign? I had to use online guide to reach them. And let me tell you. They are definitely easier than this AND Kanbei's error.
Shadow Drifter I've never tried them, or I've never got to them legitimately. I met the requirements to play them when I was making this video, but that was because I used a cheat to instantly kill the enemy and win the mission, which I also used for the Sonja missions.
What do you mean this game is the least balanced? *cough* Dual Strike *cough*
GODS, the superpowered double turns! Most broken thing I have ever seen, the entire rest of the game balance flies out the window. I used Sasha on every single mission just to prevent that.
even on normal mode, this was a ain with sami and grit
Anyone know a place to play this mission online? I dont have access to the game, and only ever played AW2, Dual Strike, and Days of Ruin. Would love to try it just for the hell of it
Just download VBA and an AW1 Rom?
9:18 I predict that was a reference to "of mice and men" am I right?
Yeah.
whoisthisgit Maybe you've seen it already, but I found a video where a guy beats this mission on AC with an S rank. He does take advantage of an AI flaw kinda like the same one that you showed in the Worst levels ever 7, but here is the link to the final part of the video where he beats it.
Advance Wars-AC Rivals Part 3: Air Battle
i got grit and sami XD i had to use the map edit glitch i almost had him bit he used meatorer on his own hq ans moved me from needing 2 turns to needing 10.
Ah, nostalgia...
they probably got their gamebois and played advance wars
Let me state that when a game is unfair, being unfair right back at it is fully justified and you suffer no shame.
you did this but you didnt do SHOW STOPPER IN HC lol took us 50 days and still S rank 300 pts lol
My thoughts exactly.
For the last mission I think I used Grit and Sami... Really I played this mission more than once using differents COs but I never managed unlock Eagle :c I didn't know how to get all COs. (Grit is powerful, for me is of the best ones, Samy and Olaf are useless XD, could be good but no for my game style)
By this unfair situations I left the game.
Specially in Battle Mode when recently I want back to the game and get all COs (I want know the Nell's power. So I must end Battle Mode and catch all COs)
So I managed to do a recorded single segment Perfect S-Rank of Rivals AC:
ruclips.net/video/XoP1L8evwDc/видео.html
My opinion now is that Rivals AC is actually better than Kanbei's Error AC and The Final Battle AC, but BARELY. Rivals AC is still the same piece of shit we're all complaining about, such is a key point of making the video, but at least with my strategy it's interactive at certain points. You don't even get that much with Kanbei's Error AC. You're forced to use a Day-To-Day guide from start to finish just to survive there, and not helping its case is that you can't skip it at all like you can skip Rivals AC. The Final Battle also lacks reliability for any attempts at a Perfect S-Rank even with Max/Eagle simply because Sturm's behavior is random with too many units compared to the underwhelming resources your forces get. Nevertheless, that Rivals AC could need to give you a whopping 25 Days for the Perfect S-Rank in a mode where Power and Technique are maxed automatically is beyond inane.
There's a reason AW2 HC versions would often add a few units to YOUR forces and see how well you can handle your own numbers: to avoid this sort of busted level design.
I just realized and I should have commented about this earlier, but Olaf being a bad choice for the left is bogus. For that to happen at all, you have to unlock Olaf's Sea Strike, which involves routing his navy in Olaf's Navy (wow) with utter crap unless you don't mind waiting a long time to let the navy units' inability to live indefinitely do their magic.
Seriously, you're punished for doing something difficult by having to do an additional mission and then being forced to deal with a bad choice in an already bullshit level even on NC. "Intelligent" Systems cun't even be consistent with their design decisions.
