Gum recession topic and though I follow the right way to brush from your video but my gums seem to be receding faster and I bought new toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, floss etc. What else should I be doing?
♥I loved this video very much because it contains a lot of information. I hope you will continue. I benefit from it a lot
People are getting mad about Dr. John not rinsing after brushing, but when I asked Kriss ai if that's okay, it turns out it's actually recommended by dentists so that the fluoride has more time to work and protect your teeth!
I don't think I'm comfortable with the idea of walking around with a strong taste of toothpaste in my mouth 😩 from where exactly did you confirm Dr. John's tip?
Ah yes, i see this a lot too in kdramas! Btw, can you tell me what kriss ai is? 🙂
Wow, I didn't know that! I also feel uneasy when I don't rinse after brushing my teeth.. hahaaha That Kris you mentioned sounds interesting! What chatbot is that?
you know what, it can also improve cavity protection and according to Kriss ai one of the effect is you can have longer lasting fresh breath
yes... i've been doing that for 2 months now. not rinsing after brushing your teeth, I also got this information from kriss ai!! it is very helpful 🥰
Omg I committed 6/10 of the things on the list. Thanks for such an informative video , things they don’t really teach in school! 😢
He back! Dr yoo! The best! ❤😂
Great vlog!! ❤️
Thank you for sharing, J 🙂🙏 Miss you too. 😊
Seunghee is such a professional at explaining. 👏
J, you're like a proud boss/brother/friend 😆
For the gum recession, would you brush any differently? Could you share more about the specialized care and techniques?
If you have any tips for people in my situation, that'd be awesome 🙂🌻
I also had an Oral-B electric toothbrush 2000 that was gifted to me a while back. I noticed slight canine gum recession then.
I started to clench my teeth at night ever since my car accident in 2021. I have Invisalign retainers and my dentist suggested getting an NTI. There were times that I sensed the pressure of my clenching after removing my NTI with retainer in the morning. This also doesnt help that I have TMD/TMJ. I wear the NTI on and off just to check when I clench at night. I know I don't clench every night. Clenching might have increased my gum recession and noticed recession along molar areas as well with some bad habits you've mentioned in your videos.
I'm doing better with my car accident injuries now just the jaw clenching remains. My dentists said I dont need surgery for TMD/J so I've been trying chiropractic adjustments, massage and acupuncture to relieve jaw pain. I am testing to see which traditional/modern approach works and what I could learn from each practitioner.
I backed off from electric toothbrush out of fear that I'm making it worse🥲 Finding a soft toothbrush is like finding a life partner amidst a market of hard/medium toothbrushes.
Some people grind their teeth when they're sleeping, or even when they're not sleeping, including clenching. All of these can lead to gum recession. Unfortunately, bruxism while sleeping can only be countered by wearing a mouthguard.
Greaaaat!!! Me encanto tu vlog (: muy educativo!! gracias por ayudar a corregir errores 🪥
thanks for sharing! 😊 I wish you would post vlogs and shorts every week 😄 I miss you here🫶🏻
Hi Dr. Yoo, could you explain and demonstrate, brush away from the gums? Thank you so much for making time out of your busy day for posting all the helpful videos. Thank you and keep up the great work.
yes definitely. sorry the animation covered up the demo , will do it again in future vid
I have this question too but slightly different. What would happen if we don’t brush closer to the gum areas? Build up? I thought I should this whole time. 🤦♀️ Thanks for the video. Very informative.
I have been watching your videos for a few years now and it’s actually because of your videos that my dental hygiene is so much better. Thank you for educating us! I truly appreciate it.
Made my week 🙏🙏🙏 thanks for sharing Natalie , keep up the great effort!! 💯
Thank you for the good knowledge you gave.
Omgosh this is the best dental video advice thank you sm for sharing these insightful reminders ❤️🔥 and wow im definitely eyeing in getting that laifen wave 👁️💕
thanks for the supportive words !
I like the vibes of these videos, and they teach us alot
Thanks for coming back and reminding me to keep up that dental hygiene Dr John
thanks for watching 😎
Thanks for sharing this.
thanks for the advise, just wanted to say I am from southern africa and our grannies used to actually tell us to brush our teeth with charcoal/ash I don't know if it's effective or not but its surely traditionally practised in some parts of the world!
I’ve learned a lot from your channel. I wished my old dentist cared about teeth more than money.
After watching your videos I found a new dentist. I did a great job brushing and flossing and my new dentist noticed that but the problems I faced before with my gums were not addressed by my previous dentist and they said I was fine and now I have advanced gum disease and have to get laser surgery to treat or risk losing my teeth, I’m in my 20’s almost 30. A shame my old dentist did not send me to a periodontist 4 years ago when I asked them why my gums were hurting and receding. Also wish I learned how to take care of my teeth properly years ago too!
And my parents did not know any better because we have only ever had that dentist since they were Chinese and the language barrier in finding a new place. 😢thank you for all the tips. I’m glad I’m getting proper care for my teeth now and I can also supplement care at home thanks to your videos and make sure I’m doing it right. My old dentist never talked about my teeth or my plans for keeping it healthy.

thanks for sharing 🤩 With much respect u are so handsome John 😊
After wearing braces for several years, I've had to relearn how to brush and floss. It's a hell of a lot quicker now.
No interdental brushes needed and flossing is over in like 30 seconds rather than like 2 mins.
Thanks for sharing these tips (: I am a fan of your channel
ayo imma buy the toothbrush and stainless steel tongue scraper for my fam.
your videos have been really helpful in explaining things to my immigrant parents. they lived in a rural village and back there, healthcare is bad. their teeth are a lil worse fir hair and they've giteen some taken out. i'm trying to encourage healthier habits so they can at least take care of what they have. thanks fir keeping it simple and not shaming those who are ignorant.
I might get the water flosser for them as it seems more convenient for flossing even though you should technically do both.
Have a lovely day/evening ❤
love the message about encouraging healthy habits with your loved ones. i agree 100% with the mindset. you're doing a huge service! 👍👍
Thank you jhon ❤I learned so much from you❤❤❤ keep it up god bless you and your career 💗
This was so helpful! Thank you! I had noticed gum recession and i had no idea my electric truth brush was the cause 🥲. I never understood why my gums were receding when i take good care of them.
thanks for your feedback ellen, and kudos on taking good care of hygiene. just to clarify: the recession COULD be from other factors, but certainly worth double checking that we're minimizing damage from preventable causes !
My dental hygienist actually suggested that I use an electric toothbrush and it helped me a lot .
Thank you for the video Dr. John, super informative! One follow up question - what is the correct way if we are not supposed to rinse with water after brushing? I feel like I need the water to get rid of the uncomfortable tiny debris in my mouth after brushing. Or should I be using mouthwash to rinse? Or not rinse at all and just spit?
yes, spit excess including residue. if uncomfortable with feeling, rinsing with a xylitol or fluoride mouthrinse helps. another option, which is more cumbersome but achieves same goal, is to brush, rinse, and then brush with a small amt of toothpaste again
give your assistant a raise i am in love with her
Very useful I've been following for a while now.
Dr. Yoo, thanks for this great video! I went to the Laifen website to view the Wave, but didn't see any replacement brush heads. Where would we order replacement brush heads from?
Love your videos man, big inspo
thanks Wilson, much appreciated!
So good to see you after so many days, John. You make us wait for long just to see you, Missed you as well, Yoo. How are you?
im good thanks for sticking around !
no worries@@dr.johnyoo , I will stick around forever..
Damn, this video was really convenient, was noticing receding gums, is there any way to regrow them, or does it require surgery if too severe?
Thank you for the tips, great video I learnt lots!

Thank you so much for this video! Caring about my oral health after getting a handle on my mental health. ❤ For alcaline mouthwash, can I use it right after I wat or do I need to wait at least 30 minutes?
Hey Dr. John, your vlogs are very amazing. Thank you for sharing the information. You are the best dentist. May God bless you always
thank you for your kind words !
It's crazy how so many people don't shot the toilet lid. Overall I love how you educate online especially for people who can't afford dental insurance or someone like me who has dental insurance but I kept on rescheduling 3x but something always came up so I stopped rescheduling
Great tips and advice Dr. Yoo!!
🙏🙏🙏💯
Thank you all. Your videos are helping me so much.
so great to hear that ! let us know if any other topics to cover in the future : D
Thanks for asking.
Thanks for asking.
Hey,Doc! Thank you so much for these educational videos. Not all of us were brought up with any of this, and it has helped me improve my dental health. I have shared these with my friends and they learned a lot too. A future suggestion topic for me would be the flossing. I have tried several kinds of products and I don’t like how it seems to shred or stick between some of my teeth. I understand the importance for sure. I definitely do after eating foods like celery 🦷😁
if floss is shredding , try one that's a bit thinner/waxed in texture , such as oral B's glide floss. i personally prefer the thicker ones with more texture (coco floss) to dislodge more effectively . but give those 2 a try and lmk !
@@dr.johnyoo Thank you,I will. Have a nice day doc ☀️
this video just reminded me to unbox my tongue scraper. 😂 also, I feel highly tempted to get that new laifen toothbrush, but due to my existing gum recession, I will consider going manual instead.
thanks for the great video!!! I'm a big fan of the student dentist's explanations. :-)
Can you please recommend safe way to whitening teeth?
If we are not supposed to rinse right after brushing, how long do you recommend we delay rinsing? Also, do I follow up with a mouthwash after, or before brushing? Since some mouthwashes contain fluoride is it okay to rinse with water and then do the mouthwash to maintain the benefits of the fluoride? I find it hard to not rinse after brushing. The taste of the toothpaste just sitting there just feels unnatural.
If you're using a mouthwash with fluoride after brushing then yes, it's fine to rinse with water after brushing. Don't rinse after you use mouthwash though. I found it difficult to avoid rinsing after brushing too, felt a bit gross to me, but you get used to it over time. You could change the flavour of your toothpaste if you don't like the taste
dr. If I brush my teeth in 45 degree angle then my teeth from gum area doesn't get cleaned properly and it becomes yellow from that area which is very hard to get rid of !!! what to do ?
what are your thoughts on interdental brushes instead of flossing?
if I don't rinse my mouth right after brushing do I just spit out all the tooth paste and eventually swallow what I couldn't fully spit out? I rinse after brushing because I'm uncomfortable with the toothpaste still in my mouth 😭
interdental brushes are efficient in cleaning larger spaces, braces, and bridges, however the dental floss "breaks" through contacts between teeth and can effectively clean between tight spaces. both have their use cases. dont replace your flossing with interdental though, use as adjunct
and yes spit excess. if uncomfortable with residue feeling, rinsing with a xylitol or fluoride mouthrinse helps
Thank You!!!

Honest question: what about baking soda. Is it safe to use when brushing?
You are seriously the best Dr. John...your vlogs are like amazing. My exams are approaching so can you please wish me luck?❤️❤️
you dont need any luck but sending them your way. go crush your exams !! u got thiss
Hi👋🏽 it’s my first time on the channel. Great video! I have questions 🤷🏽♀️ Sooo, I already have some gum recession. I use the Nimbus extra soft toothbrush and you’re saying I shouldn’t use an electric incl. the one you mention? I don’t scrap my tongue because I have Sjogrens and my mouth is really dry, I use my brush and scrap forward, is that enough? We should brush at a 45 degree angle in a circular motion and not touch the gums??? A really detailed demonstration would be soooo awesome! And can I just say, do other people not close the toilet lid? What? I grew up doing that and not doing it is just gross😮. What did you think the lid was for if you’re out closing it? Do you know how far those particles travel if you flush without shutting the lid? Srsly 6 feet. Ok TMI…
Thanks for the video, it really helps. Is there a way to treat gum recession? Or what would happen to the teeth?
yes there are ways to treat recession, including gum grafting and pinhole surgery. teeth associated with gum recession may become more sensitive due to root exposure and gaps/pockets may form between teeth. elongated teeth (due to exposure of root) are considered less esthetic due to its increased prevalence with aging
@@dr.johnyoo thanks doctor, i realized i had that problems especially the front teeth when eating become more sensitive, perhaps talking and discussing about this gum recession would be a great video. Looking forward to your next video doctor :)
had to rewatch for educational purposes….
1. what is canine recession and how do i know if i have it or not
2. how often should we change out our non-eco friendly plastic tongue scrapers; how to maintain a stainless steel one
3. laifen sounds a bit chinese… any plans to rebrand to something more korean?
😂😂😂i know it’s still early in the morning but my adhd brain just wants to know thaaaaangs lol
1. canine recession is the photo on the thumbnail. my canines looks like that lol.. normally if you see darker shade of tooth below the crown, that's the root being exposed (receding gums). easiest way to confirm is to ask your dentist if you have any signs of recession. sometimes they're localized (specific teeth, sometimes more generalized - throughout). more people get them on their canines
2. stainless steel lasts longer. i swap my plastic tongue scraper every time i swap brush head
3. ur right ! Laifen is a trusted Chinese tech/health devices company. i cant rebrand it , it's not mine lol 😂
I have halitosis and recession 😢 What is recommended for a hole in rear molar that doesn't hurt when it's clean? And isn't fluoride toxic?
Team aggressive tongue scraping ✨
Hey Jack congrats on Tufts residency! My dream is to go there for dental school. I'm applying next summer so I'm starting to study for the DAT.
u are my inspiration bro
Yessss!
Dr. Yoo, you mentioned about rinsing with water is bad? Did you mean we have to wait after brushing our teeth before rinsing our mouth? What do you rinse with if we can’t rinse with water?
Yeah, same question too 😶
Missed you & your educational tips! Learned not to interchange string flossing with the water flosser I was gifted, I thought that it would only be one or the other, so thanks for sharing!
thanks for feedback vanessa ! appreciate you . and u got good friends , gifting u oral hygiene devices 😎👍
So even if I'm using oral b electric toothbrush with pressure sensor it's not recommend if i have gum recession???
♥I loved this video very much because it contains a lot of information. I hope you will continue. I benefit from it a lot
Thoughts on oil pullinggg
I love u your a great dentist
Can u explain bad habits for people with braces too?
This!
Thanks Doc,
Can gum recession be reversed at home with any lifestyle approach?
You have to change your diet to have low carb & no processed foods. That way your saliva is a mineralizing pH. It’s the food you eat that feed the cavity causing bacteria. Next is blood flow to your teeth by massaging your gums gently. Green juicing, minerals, Oil pulling & xylitol will help.
😎😎 Yayyy Doc Yoo back with awesome advice, wow I’ve always used medium brush time to rethink I feel. Why you always handsome and to cool 😎😎🔥🔥
time to switch over !
@@dr.johnyoo Advice taken on route for new toothbrush. 👌☺️
Welcome Back. Ah so nice video.
Thank You for your guide and tips
😌👍🌷💙🤍

Modified bass technique teach us horizontal stroke with vertical stroke too. Will that lead to gum damage then
Hi 😊 I have receding gums, and I am not sure which toothpaste to use as I always dreamt of my teeth dropping out.
I’ve learnt something new. Thank you ! Better teeth for me now ig 😅
I'll take note of your recommendations! thanks for the info! and my question is: does it make sense to use an irrigator?
yes, can be used in addition to the string floss/floss pick
@@dr.johnyoo thanks for the answer!
I haven't ever flossed sadly. I've only had money problems and temp fills previously.. and dentist hygiene growing up.. was just poorly translated and scary. Almost in 30s and not even sure how to floss. Is there a video on your channel for example how to?
But isn’t fluoride added to the public water supply? Or am I mistaken
but it won't stick to your teeth
Awesome video! Found you last week and have been changing dental hygiene habits already. Thanks! I do have a question: is a small amount of gum recession natural as we get older?
yes , great question. a survey found that 88% of patients 65+ had some form of gum recession, and it can hit any age. what we're trying to prevent is onset due to improper brushing habits. aging is a natural process of life, and we dont want to stress over things we cant control, so im glad you brought this up!
@@dr.johnyoo Thank you for the reply! Sounds like good advice for other areas of life, too. Cheers!
Can we get a video on this brushing technique? I saw one reel about it mentioned and now come across this video talking it…. And not demonstrating with a fake mouth actually doing it and showing helps
Try using a miswaak stick, Great for teeth and gums
I’ve tried an electric toothbrush before and I can’t stand it - the place I go to is always telling me to use one, but I hate it. And I’m concerned about using one because of some gum recession that I have going on - the last time I tried it, I swear I wasn’t pressing too hard, but goodness, my gums were borderline painful. ☹️
Video interessante !
Hey Dr. John you're so handsome. My dream is to meet you in real life one day. You are my inspiration as a pre-dental student. Could you give some tips on getting into dream dental school.
2:50 "Brushing right after eating...wait 30 minutes"
Why wait? I understand that pH levels may be too low after eating, but why not just rinse your mouth with water? This is basic chemistry: a cup full of water will IMMEDIATELY raise the pH in your mouth to at least 6.5. There's no reason to wait if you rinse your mouth. Also, once the toothpaste hits your teeth, the pH will also immediateley rise.
I think that's exactly it. I'm not sure but maybe it is to raise the pH level, SLOWLY. if you rinse it with water it just instantaneously raises your mouth's pH level. im not sure tho.
great point!! love that you brought this up
you're absolutely right in that the oral cavity pH will quickly restore with water/alkaline rinse, and is an effective hygiene habit. the reasons we wait, even after swishing, is that 1. the ENAMEL itself is still compromised temporarily and 2. certain microbia present in plaque can quickly produce acids after carbohyrate feeding. more details below:
reason #1, the enamel becomes porous or "etched" with each acid exposure, depending on contact time and pH (i.e. sipping on lemon juice does more damage to enamel than drinking coffee) . habitually brushing the compromised enamel surface immediately after, even if the rest of the mouth has normal pH, abrades the enamel's surface.
reason #2, certain carbs/sugars enable plaque bacteria to produce acids on enamel during and after feeding
the guideline of waiting 30 min is a parameter to allow safer condition of enamel to be brushed, though there are ways to speed up the pH restoration in the meantime, as you mentioned. if it seems unrealistic to wait that long to brush however, as mentioned in the pro tip, we still do advise brushing.
hope this clarifies, and thanks for bringing it up!
@@dr.johnyoo Thank you so much for clarifying, Dr. Yoo. I guess I will wait to brush, even after swishing water or chewing xylitol gum.
Two days ago I had my root canal and may I say that my doctor (female) was so moody. While having the procedure, I kept on remembering how you communicate with your patients to make them feel comfortable; I was shivering the whole time especially since I'm scared of needles. She brought the whole anesthetic injection infront of my face, even though it was a small prick. :'(
Also can you recommend some post root canal actions I can take to help my tooth heal faster and ease the pain, im already taking pain killrz though
sorry to hear that Serene :( props to you for committing to your procedure despite your fear. besides your pain meds recommend by your dentist, you can try applying ice pack wrapped in towel at intervals , saltwater rinse, elevating head, avoiding common triggers such as cold or icy foods. but always consult your dentist for the most precise plan. hope you get well soon !
Yes King !!!!! ❤❤❤❤
aayy thanks for dropping by Tyler have a good one!
Does Laifen sell replacement heads? I could t find any on the website or on Amazon
yes they sell on their website, can type in laifen wave toothbrush heads on ur search engine. they're working on restocking the 3 & 6 packs soon, just sold out past week . the brush comes with 3 brush heads also , so it should last ~9 months to start . hope that helps!
Dr. John casually testing Seunghee's knowledge by filming this video😂
how did she do? 📚📚
Bro I literally just got home from the dentist and I saw you posted after a month lmao
watching you 👀
are there soft bristled brush heads for electric toothbrushes like Sonicare? or do u just not recommend electric toothbrushes for people with gum recession at all?
from what i see in products i've tried personally (patients asking if this or that is ok to use), electric brushes on the market are intended for the general population, not those with existing gum recession. which is why many periodontists (gum specialists) advise using extra-soft bristled manual toothbrushes for their patients, to err on the safe side . would definitely consult your dentist for a personalized recommendation, however, for the most accurate diagnosis
Man I wish more dentists and just professionals were more like you. Looks like you really care about your craft. Especially by replying to people's questions days after the video's been uploaded.
Is using a water flosser alone sufficient? Or do you have to use the string as well? I have permanent orthodontic retainers so I can't use the string.
A very good video, with helpful tips... i hope your videos have spanish subtitles for share with my patients 😅... almost all of us have bad habits at brushing 🤭
Greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽🌮🦷

Sir what is the gross revenue and overhead costs of your dental practice? Plz reply. Thanks a lot.

Made my purchase of the electric toothbrush right after watching this video ✨
you wont regret it. lmk what you think !
Used it for 1 week now & I can say that it's definitely better than Oral B 🤭 just that I need to get used to not hitting my teeth on the neck of the toothbrush.
Thanks
I have a question if you could answer it what could i do to get my gums back to pink? if ive been brushing my teeth??
good question, though i dont have enough information on your case to answer this accurately. have you consulted a dentist regarding your condition?
@@dr.johnyoo Yeah and i love ur channel it helps so much😃
My teeth and gums are now thanking you, Dr. Yoo, for this video 🦷❤✨
That brushing right after eating tip really hit hard 😅😅
P.S.: The population really wants to know: is it true that eating an apple really keeps your gums healthy?
the idea behind that is that you need a certain level of vit C to maintain healthy gingiva (gums). vitamin C deficiency can lead to gum problems . so it's not the apple uniquely , but rather the vitamins in it . if that's what youre wondering !
Hello there, how many passes of manual flossing is recommended daily?
daily flossing is recommended
@@dr.johnyoo Yes u did mention daily in the video. Am asking passes between from say left to right, upper and lower set of teeth. 😊
@@ewmurphy between each set of touching teeth should be at least twice (ruclips.net/video/-hR5GNqLKbc/видео.htmlsi=Jze8TSvso1mRajjT this video at 6:48 explains it) and then wipe before moving to next tooth. i prefer using string floss over floss picks
I have the worst brushing skills everrrrr.. Thanks for this video. 🎉 Very helpful & good information.
🙏🙏💯💯💯
My problem is I don’t trust any dentists here easily so when I need to do the bite-wing I just need uncle to do it, which is so far away. Except this I m ok, family concerns about the teeth since I was young so it turn out good.
To watch urs and listen to my uncle helps a lot, both r the best dentists in my mind 🎉😊🎀
Uncle taught me the ankle of the toothbrush, the position of the chair that dentist should do 😂 which I don’t know why I have to know it lolol
also drew all the pic for me and yes he studied from professional in US 😊
Please make a slower video on brushing demonstration. I don't think I'm the only one that can't do the 45 degrees well. Also the location on the tooth is a bit weird - how to vet the food from between the tooth this way.
오우! 내가 바라던 비디오네요 감사합니다. 많은걸 알았어요.😂😂😂❤❤❤

thanks for sharing🤩 Why is it so difficult to kiss with braces?!!😢😅
@alaremsegruslak 🤣😅🤣😂 I know this sounds like a stupid joke but it's real hahaha
LOL... I looked this up at kriss ai and it said it might be because of unfamiliarity, fear of pain/discomfort, risk of getting stuck, and self-consciousness.
