I live in Australia and there are 6-7 types of Pottsii here and last year some time, there was some announcement that a large number of hoyas were being renamed. Amoena, citrina, parasitica, Pottsii etc would all fall under the name 'Verticillata". The same way that Macrophylla AlbomarginataIs now Latifolia.

Great video with extra historical info which not many youtuber would bother to research or talk about. I have a lot of verticillata. In Australia they still labelling as Pottsii. I only on know them one from Australia is called nichosonia (pardon my misspelling Hehehehe). There are quite a few of those. A coupe of my friends want to collect them all. I have heaps verticillata Chang Mai. They just easy to flower. They seem to all have similar flowers. I love their foliage, arguably my all time favourite. The varigata i just acquired recently. I like all Hoya that orginate from Vietnam (my birth place) and Australia (my country ). I am a refugee (boat people) hehehe
I love all the Hoyas I've seen from Vietnam as well. I will have another verticillata very soon, it was very cheap and it's a clone that looks different than mine. Gotta catch'em all. 😂
I have a Rebecca and it's struggling. It was the first cutting (in a group I bought) to root, but then when I planted it in soil, it did not adapt well, and I think 90% of the roots died. I think it took something like 5 months for the leaves to start looking healthy and plump again. Then it started to grow a new vine, but it died off. It only recently put out one small new leaf, and last time I looked at it, it was looking like it might go yellow. I also bought a camphorifolia on a whim, because the price was decent, and it was a large cutting, but it got red spider mites, I had rooting issues, and now I'm down to 2 leaves on mostly bare stems :( I also got dolichosparte in the same order with the camphorifolia. That one was suggested to grow in semi-hydro. It's doing just fine for me, but in over a year it has not done anything. No new vines, no new leaves not even any nodes that seem to be waking up. But it still looks happy and healthy.
Gosh what a shame! I repotted all of mine into a mix of orchid bark/perlite/a sandy peat mix/worm castings with a bit of dolomite lime and they seem to really like it. It's a very loose mix that doesn't pack even if I squeeze it. The only one that hasn't shown growth yet is the dolichosparte but it was the smallest cutting of all with no new growth when it arrived. We'll see. 😅
The Hoya hanhiae leaves are almost geometric, maybe that's what you meant to say? They're very pretty and I agree about the finlaysonii types. LOVE Hoyas with leaves like that as well!!
Hi Betsy, long time watcher first time commenter, I just wanted to come here and say how much I love watching your plant videos and enjoy returning to older ones when I want obsess even more over Hoyas :))) thank you so much for all the effort you put into your RUclips videos, they are really a pleasure to watch and I often learn a lot ! Did you ever find that Hoya Obscura you were looking for ? I have an obscura that's gone bananas growing this year and would love to send you a cutting ! I live in France too so would be easy to send. Thanks again, Tom
I hope your Thomsonii makes it this time! But I dunno .... the species being from the Himalayas makes me think it likes some elevation? So maybe you can take it on an excursion, like a day out, to the Eiffel Tower and maybe Montmartre etc? Perhaps the Swiss Alps are nearby? Or maybe place a print of the Himalayas behind the Thomsonii in order to make it feel at home? Perhaps it likes cold weather? But I go on too long about it. But really an excursion would be nice!
Hi Betsy, I love your videos and your sense of humor! I have a question......do you find that you have any trouble with pointing the end of the hoya stem down? I heard they have to point up in order for the plant to grow? Liz
Hey! I just found your channel, and I just wanted to say thanks a lot, now my bank account hates me 😬😁🙄 Ordering at least 4 of these little cuties as soon as I can get a hold of them. But just one quick question, what’s the most important thing I need to be aware of if I’m mail ordering live plants during the winter, specifically in Canada? Which I’m guessing is probably similar to some places in France.
I love Thomsonii. They are super expensive in Australia right now for me to get one (above 300 bucks Australian). 🥰🥰🥰 we want 10, 000 words thesis about Pottsii from Basie’s plant NOw! Hahaha
I got a hoya in a trade about a year ago and it was only known as hoya sp.1054. I found out today that it is possibly a parisitica. Looks like little hearts. Do you know if the sp.1054 is in fact a Parisitica? I'd love more info. Thanks for all you do to teach us! 😊
I'm not familiar with that Hoya so I can't say if it's H. verticillata or not. Anything called Hoya parasitica is actually going to be Hoya verticillata. This is a common misnomer for verticillata (so is H. acuta).
i have hoya verticillata, the normal green one. but it didnt look like yours. It looks like your verticillata variegata but without the variegation. lol. i love all of your new hoyas tho😍😍
Catching up after holiday but just watched Basie talking about no such thing as Potsi too! I love hoya but get annoyed with all the name changes, wrong names and people fighting about it. Would rather watch you and Basie! Didn't see the newer trellis on store front, in an upcoming video please let us know where you got them!
I only have a bunch of different Carnosa forms (in my country it's hard to get other Hoyas) and I also noticed that a lot of people are also selling Hoya Carnosa varieties and the true especies as cultivars or other species with splash or different forms, Carnosa polka dot, freckles, stardust and more and more names are actually the "true carnosa" behaving differently, mine is an 100 year old one from a woman that brought it from Italy, every cutting I have looks different, splashy, really dark, tiny or big leaves, and I have them in the same place too, I too recommend doing a bunch of deep scientific research (seeing the exemplars on old photos, descriptions, manuscripts etc...) before buying any Hoya!
I really like Hoya carnosa and I think too many people disregard it because it's common. It's one of my most beautiful Hoyas. And mine just developed its first peduncle!
@@betsybegonia How lucky! Mine had too and when I pruned some stems and planted them sadly they didn't make it, but they are beautiful and the smell OMG so fragant, I do also hold a big place for them in my heart since they flower on my birthday most of the time 🤌🏻💛
To me totally forget "wrong names" would be more confusing 😕 for example, if I would by a plant "Hoya verticilata" without a photo, what is the % I get the one I need? There is a huge difference in foliage between one and other. 🤔
Yes, you have to be able to see it with your own eyes to know if it's the clone you want. As for H. nicholsoniae vs. H. verticillata it's the blooms that give them away--H. verticillata is white, H. nicholsoniae is yellow, more or less.
Honestly I suppose it's because they use surnames. Their wives would have had the same surnames as them. There are some cultivars named after people's using their first names like 'Jennifer' or 'Patricia' but I don't think I've seen a species given anything but a surname.
@@betsybegonia @Betsy Begonia Haha, my comment is a reference to a running joke that is meant to imply that they were 'more than friends' - not sure if that joke landed 🤣. You're right though. It is an uncommon practice to use a first and last name, such as with Agra katewinsletae, but even that may be a more modern practice. Cheers!

Yeah. Or... Ripply. They're fiddly doo. They're hubba bibbidee boo. 😂
Hi Tom! Thanks for the kind message. Yes, I did get ahold of an obscura! 😄
@@betsybegonia glad to hear ! :D
Love this video. Love hoyas!
OML! I use the same rabbit fencing to make trellises for my Hoyas!
😎
It's perfect! And now my shelves have more space. 😄
Love your videoes! I would love if you made a video about your top 10 houseplants. I want to se your show stoppers! 🤩🍀 Love from Norway
Thanks for the suggestion. 💚
😂 At first you had me going and then I started laughing.
I love the information you provide.. Nice to know about my Parasitica or lack there of....lol
Well, now you know what it probably is (unless it blooms yellow and then it's probably a H. nicholsoniae 😂).
I've suffered the same fate with my hoya thomsonii. Currently caring for my 3rd on and I'm down to a single node with 2 leaves 🤣🤣🤣
Hi Betsy, I love your videos and your sense of humor! I have a question......do you find that you have any trouble with pointing the end of the hoya stem down? I heard they have to point up in order for the plant to grow? Liz
They naturally grow towards the light and the tips will change position all day in my experience.
@@betsybegonia Gotcha! Thanks🌿🌱🪴🌵
Basie plants we want more!
WE NEED MORE!
Full thesis please 🙏🏻
@Basie Plants, the people need to know.
Just found your video love it new in Hoya community :) and yes Dear @Basie plants we like to know more please
Buis nursery is/was (idk) in the Netherlands ! Lida and Anneke are sisters I believe
wait. but will we be getting a video on how to make the trellises?
I've had a lot of requests so probably, yes. 😂
Looking forward to Miro’s vericillata video!
🥰🥰🥰 we want 10, 000 words thesis about Pottsii from
Basie’s plant NOw! Hahaha
Miro, the people request your knowledge.
This is a common misnomer for verticillata (so is H. acuta).
So fun!
Loved this vid
Appreciate the IG shoutouts 😁 Particularly Hoyagoddess. She’s super sweet! Received my Rebecca from her 🤗
I was happy to find that she's also a substance disorder recovery advocate. It motivated me to use one of her pics especially. Good for her.
Definitely a passionate spirit 😊
So Hoya Patsii is the brontosaurus of hoyas
😂 I think so. And I think there are many more.
i have hoya verticillata, the normal green one. but it didnt look like yours. It looks like your verticillata variegata but without the variegation. lol. i love all of your new hoyas tho😍😍
I just got a new verticillata cutting and it looks nothing like my other one.
@@betsybegonia I know right. Amazing they have so many varieties out there. And it just makes me wanna have them all😂
Enlightened thx:) no more pottsiis
Catching up after holiday but just watched Basie talking about no such thing as Potsi too! I love hoya but get annoyed with all the name changes, wrong names and people fighting about it. Would rather watch you and Basie! Didn't see the newer trellis on store front, in an upcoming video please let us know where you got them!
I made them. A lot of people have requested a video, I'll make one. 😉
@@betsybegonia can't wait!!!!
Basie, we need to know!!
WE GOTTA KNOW, MAN!
@@betsybegonia also... I have "pottsii" Kuranda IML-0039 🤣 so I suspect that it is Hoya nicholsoniae 😅 I will wait for flowers to confirm 😬
Thanks betsy! Now i know that my parasitica is actually a verticillata..
25:47 "Not a lot of Hoyas named after their wives" 👀 And they were roommates.
Cheers!
@@NinjaXryho Oh I've thought about it. 😂
If I close my eyes I visualize you as the crazy cat lady from the simpsons but instead of throwing cats you throw hoyas XD
I absolutely dig your kind of craziness and love every single video you put out!
You're not wrong. I'll give it to you.
@@betsybegonia 🙇🏻♀️ all hail to the crazy hoya lady 🙌
How did you get a hoya heuschkeliana variegata for $8? They’re like 100$ here in the us.
Some plants are more common here and vice versa.
Are you from Boston?
I'm originally from Ohio.
