Mine have bloomed in an east facing window or under my grow light. They are farther from the growlight than my hen and chicks but still pretty bright light. They turn a little red if they are too close and I just move them. I trim mine all the time or they will tip over from being so long. I never beleived the whole root bound thing. Thanks for the information! I have been looking at my one stemmed, 7 leaved Hoya obavata side ways because it just put out it’s second peduncle this week. I have been thinking I must be on a different plane of reality because of everything I have seen or read about flowering is it is only “mature plants”. Now, it hasn’t bloomed yet, but I am certainly hoping for good things this year. Again, thank you for your information and love your quirky sense of humor.
Is there going to be a one year nose update? I got mine just a couple weeks after you btw. I was pretty distraught by the pig nose the first few weeks and seeing you beaming through your recovery the way you did was a nice relief from my experience at the time. I really loved your 6 month update. If a one year update is in the works that’s awesome, if not that’s more than okay of course! I like popping in now and again for your wonderful sense of humor.
Hi, thanks for your kind message. I don't plan to do an update. Nothing has really changed since my 6 month video and I'm kind of tired of drawing attention to my physical appearance and receiving input on what I look like from hundreds of strangers. 😅 It's a lot. Thanks for understanding.
Oh the re-potting! I ignore many "suggestions" , for example I grow my Hoyas in a soil mix, I propagate in soil with great success. I figure why put the plant through many transitions? Straight into the soil mix they go. I've heard that because Hoya grow in trees they don't need fertilizer... I fertilize monthly and I'm again having great success, I use fish emulsion and they love it! Full sun? Absolutely. I give my Hoyas as much sun as they can tolerate without damage. Most get dappled sun under a tree and I have found that an hour or three of sun is not a problem. And back to the potting. I have a Hoya surigaoensis, it was growing slowly and steadily and became top heavy. So I re-potted it and went up to a size that I had on hand (1 " pot to a 4" pot) this plant loved the change! It has grown huge leaves and multiple growth points. By the way, you inspire me. Love your videos.
My tiny Hoya crimson princess sat unmoving for 18 months - you'd think it was a silk plant - until the wonderful BB discord community helped me figure out I was severely underwatering it. Over the winter it grew 4 big leaves and developed a couple new growth points. So yeah....that myth.....
Dear Betsy, I need your help asap. Yesterday I bought 4 hoya cuttings thinking they already had roots. I think they might have but they were so tiny and running all over the place in the transportation. None of them have any roots left. I don't have a grow light at home so I made a mix of succulent plant soil and regular tropical soil with the little bit of perlite they came in and put them in this mix hoping and praying they would root but I am so worried they will end up dying. Any tips for me?
@@betsybegonia I had a lovely full plant of it I got off etsy and it died did not like been shipped. Got another cutting to which I want to pot them up all together. I've got a carnosa star dust cutting that's started to grow leaves, thought I was going to loose it to but it's bounced back. Love watching basie plants to. X
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ My mistakes in my early days in caring Hoyas….less watering and put them away from sunlight. Now they are mostly in very bright light getting intense direct sun at least 4 hours a day, and water them everyday since they are also outdoor. They are happy now.
Hi Betsy, some one of your other viewers probably already mentioned this, so forgive my potential repetitiveness. You may wish to research purchasing a water distiller vs. an RO. I live in a “forever in drought” state and had to pass on an RO due to its water waste (maybe this has changed since 100 years ago when I researched). I do not regret purchasing a distiller. Hoya, orchids and dracaena are so much happier. Also, the machine is pretty analog and I don’t have to futz with connectivity and difficult to swap filters. Most important, I give my cats distilled water. Kitty kidneys are their Achilles heel.
This is a fantastic suggestion that I didn't know about. That's exactly what I need! I have also halted my RO system search after learning about the buckets of water that are wasted.
Oo ouch, 750 Watts and 4 hours to distill 4 Liters. 😅 I have to fill 4 humidifiers for a total of 18 Liters every week. I also wanted to water the plants with it. 💀
😂 I am an optimistic, I love to think I can water them more than I do. But! Tengchongensis rooted and I never watered it once since putting it in the propbox 😂 I think it will live there forever now 😂
I'm curious why you said the only hoya you let fully dry out is your australis? My australis grows very fast however it seriously drops 8 out of 10 leaves. They curl up and fall 😩. I'm very worried it's a pest but I don't see anything.
Hoya australis is accustomed to conditions in which the soil dries out. If you water too frequently they will yellow and drop. You really have to let the potting mix dry between waterings, they do not like damp feet.
Hi! I literally just caved a week ago and bought my first two Hoyas (well I had an australis lisa years ago, but it died and doesn't count!) Anyways, I got a Hoya kerrii and Hoya AH021 and I'm looking forward for them to arrive! I also binge watched all your Hoya videos for care tips so this is another welcome video. I'm not sure if I want the new cuttings to survive or die in my care because that'll determine if I fall into the Hoya rabbit hole.😂 🐇I already have too many plants!

Love your videos and your personality, Betsy! I also appreciate the history and info you provide for your plants, particularly the hoyas! I am a newbie collector but wanted to ask you about your choice medium for hoyas. I have recently heard of PON and I see from this video you are rooting these hoyas in PON. Will you eventually repot to a chunky mix after they root in the PON? Growing pots in hydro or semi-hydro is a bit beyond my scope right now. I also somehow feel more stressed out when I think of the care that goes into maintaining hydro/semi-hydro. Just wanted to get your thoughts or experience about this. Thank you! 😊
omgggg the first myth...YES!! i always want to say "hoyas actually don't like anything at all, they don't have feelings" but my hoyas grow better when they aren't rootbound.
you know, a lot of what you are saying are more or less common sense, if you really think about their natural habitat. i think people tend to forget the natural habitats of hoyas... sometimes they are in full sun, sometimes they get very little. sometimes lots of rain, sometimes they may be nestled in a spot that gets little to no rain, but tons of humidity
so jealous of your Elle blooming already! have had mine for months and it's growing well, is as red as red gets from my grow lights, but no peduncle yet...
re the water situation, maybe you are set on reverse osmosis or distilled, but I put fish tank neutraliser in my tap water, it removes all chlorine AND chloramine from the water and my plants are thriving on it
It's the calcium in the water that is so problematic for me. My tap is extremely high in calcium and if I use it in the humidifiers, my entire apartment is covered in white dust within hours. It's awful.
Hahaha I have several Hoyas that are prominent bloomers. I cut off the peduncles regularly because of allergies and they come right back. I think me stressing them out causes blooming!

When I wrote the bad review the person instead of giving me a refund ended up getting rid of my review and the moment I repotted her she did extremely well without that weird soil.
Have you or can you do a video on importing plants? I understand the risk and that you need to really nurse them back to health etc, but I don’t know how to start the process (paperwork type stuff) of importation! And I’m dying to!
There are some videos out there already on how to treat them upon arrival. As for importing, it depends on your country. It's different here in the EU. In the US you need to find a plant broker for more than 12 plants and the shipping cost is so high I'm not sure it's worth it to order less than 12 at a time.

I'd imagine there is some truth to the myths - of course, they dont apply to all hoya. Here's what I think. Rootbound: megalaster is a particular one which likes to fill the pot with roots before actually growing. Maturity before blooming: 1) hoyas with large flowers (e.g. gigas, lauterbachii, the other eriostemma types) do need to grow large before they start flowering. 2) cuttings with peduncles already present - would bloom. cuttings without peduncles - would not produce peduncles unless they're really happy. Sun: gonna go out on a leg to say that hoyas like direct sun. all of them (even linearis, hypolasia). just avoid excess heat. some, however, need more humidity + ventilation than others.
@@betsybegonia do have some small hoyas which I would like to see bloom - waymaniae, kanyakumariana, carmelae, serpens. these seem to be rather slow for me.

I just fertilize them like normal even when I buy fresh PON that has fertilizer pellets in it. 💀😂 No problems so far.
@@betsybegonia thank you for your answer! I ll try the same;)
Can you cover PON more Betsy?? I’ve tried so hard to make pon work for me and my Hoyas but fail every time with root rot.
Would love to know your experience!
I've just "discovered" the Hoya genus and I found this video very informative. Thank you 🙏
Hi there Betsy. A new Hoya convert. Yes been told small pot, indirect light. Oh and also don’t water regularly. To dry out completely. Need I say more! Thanks heaps for putting me on the right track. 🇦🇺🇦🇺👍👍
Hey Betsy, looking fab. girl.. so you mentioned your grow text, Girl, show us your TENT.. lol .... I am so afraid to order for hoyas, Also, can you add in your description your Hoyas you stated that love full sun, I have a few, and some I know I want to give it some TEXAS sun/shade.. but Girl I need to know all... love you to the moon and back, and give each kitty a quick squeeze... also your thoughts on PON vs the reg bark/perlite/everything you may have for quick watering and no holding needs I don' know what you call that mix, typical Hoya mix
haha
Hey Monica, I will show the inside of my tent eventually! As for the Hoyas that want direct sun, it's really just trial and error. Thank you for watching! 💚
Thank you for this video! A lot of those myths get passed along and I am glad you cleared them up.
Thank you for watching! 💚
Hei! I was planning to come for little trip to Paris on January. Is there some plant shops i should pay a visit?
Is there such a thing as zombie leaf ...will never grow anything but roots ....I rooted a few a year and a half ago ....sad to throw them out .Your opinion would be very appreciated. Thank you
Enjoyed this video! I have been wondering about that “indirect light” thing…especially seeing all of the images of hoya under grow lights. Mine are in my sunroom and I hope that is bright enough.
Dionized Water generating systems are also as good as distilled waterDoen’t require high energy.Boiling water and condensers. The resin spheres used in the DI process are rechargeable and hence have many lives like a cat.
Thank you so much for watching, Elizabeth!
Hello, good morning.. Please make more videos. I enjoy your content and I’m sure many miss you!!
I'm happy for you! I have the worst time with root rot when it comes to that plant specifically.
Great video! Love the busting of myths! Why do you think blooms turn yellow and drop before opening?
Where did you get your black floor lamp that's next to the shelving unit???
Dear Betsy, I need your help asap. Yesterday I bought 4 hoya cuttings thinking they already had roots. I think they might have but they were so tiny and running all over the place in the transportation. None of them have any roots left. I don't have a grow light at home so I made a mix of succulent plant soil and regular tropical soil with the little bit of perlite they came in and put them in this mix hoping and praying they would root but I am so worried they will end up dying. Any tips for me?
I'm saving a hushkliniana verigarta from root rot I had 4 cuttings. Got 2 wet and I'm 're rooting them. One is growing new leaves all ready. X
Glad to hear you're saving them! That plant seems pretty susceptible to root rot, I've had to save mine as well.
I appreciate you busting up the Hoya myths. 💚
But! Tengchongensis rooted and I never watered it once since putting it in the propbox 😂 I think it will live there forever now 😂
Never take it out of that prop box. 😂
THIS EXPLAINS SO MUCH about some of my hoya fails. wow.
Glad I could be of service.
Hi! I live in. Northern Alabama and was wondering if it would be too hot to put my Hoyas outside? How how is too hot? 😂😂🤔
What kind mix soil you use please
You have already fallen in. 😂 Your fate is sealed.
@@betsybegonia Hahah yeah I have a feeling that might be true😂🐇
@@betsybegonia agreed!! 😆 She is far, far gone already.
I will say that even my “fancy,” more “difficult” Hoya are easier to care for than ANY kerrii I’ve ever owned. And I have a friend that says the same thing 🤷♀️ But maybe it’s the nursery where we have gotten them bc I currently have an all green/non-variegated kerrii and it’s growing so fast and happy! All my other got root rot if you looked at them wrong 😒 Good luck, girl! And I mean that like, good luck find room for all your future Hoya bc it’s gonna happen 😉
@@betsybegonia 18:36 See that's why my australis died!!! it was too wet and the soil wouldn't dry fast enough!😭😅
@@thespoiledtexan3904 Hoya kerrii is not one of my favorites, I only got this one because I thought it would be fuzzy! 😂 I suppose they need watered less since they are so succulent. I have the same experience with obovata. That's another that likes to dry out a bit.
Good Morning from Auckland, New Zealand !!!☺☺☺
Good morning!
Hi Betsy! :) I love your knowledge of Hoya. I can only aspire to know as much as you.
I'm always learning new things. Thank you for watching, Emma. 💚
why do all my local shops and most online call inner variegated carnosa 'krimson princess' type "tricolour" and one or two facebook groups and places online insist that only the outer variegated carnosa 'krimson queen' type is called tricolour it drives me nuts
Thank you! 😊
I use PON permanently as a growing medium except for a handful of plants that are still in organic. I'll make a video about how I use PON.
@@betsybegonia Thanks!
First video I've watched and that intro 👌 Subscribed 😂😂
omgggg the first myth...YES!! i always want to say "hoyas actually don't like anything at all, they don't have feelings" but my hoyas grow better when they aren't rootbound.
I say the same thing. 😂
you know, a lot of what you are saying are more or less common sense, if you really think about their natural habitat. i think people tend to forget the natural habitats of hoyas... sometimes they are in full sun, sometimes they get very little. sometimes lots of rain, sometimes they may be nestled in a spot that gets little to no rain, but tons of humidity
@@betsybegonia hehe!
If you check your Saba it has 2 name tages in it
so jealous of your Elle blooming already! have had mine for months and it's growing well, is as red as red gets from my grow lights, but no peduncle yet...
Fingers crossed for you! All those lacunosa type blooms smell so wonderful in the evening.
Why you don’t make hole in the cup
Hi I Love Your Channel and you are a wonderful wealth of information Blessings.

Hi Betsy 💕 Enjoyed the Hoya chat!
Thank you! 💚
Omg I am so happy I found your Content.....ur great
I love your vibe .... totally
Keep up all the Great work
Love And light
Thank you so much, Julia. 💚
re the water situation, maybe you are set on reverse osmosis or distilled, but I put fish tank neutraliser in my tap water, it removes all chlorine AND chloramine from the water and my plants are thriving on it
It's the calcium in the water that is so problematic for me.
I seem to have an allergic reaction to nummularioides but luckily it's the only one so far!
Thanks for another brilliant video!🙌🏻
Thanks for sharing your "pon receipe"! Do you use it with semi-hydro setup or just like a regular soiless-mix? 🤗
I use it as a replacement for potting mix.

Hi Betsey: This is my first time watching one of your Hoya videos since I recently was gifted a Hoya. I think I keep hearing you say the word “pon” but not sure what that is. Could you explain what that is to new viewers like myself?
Also, would it be possible (to show on the screen) the name of the Hoya species you are talking about so we viewers can write it down, or take a screenshot, when we are out Hoya shopping. Thanks for all your information!
💚💚💚 Other peoples hoyas are beautiful all the ones I’ve had have been weird Benjamin button plants that are mostly sticks 😂 your hair looks lovely btw x
😂 Ugly Hoya love. Thank you for the kind remark. 💚
Hi, Betsy!! I love your videos, I have learned so much about Hoyas from you and am a better Hoya Mom!!! :)
Thank you for watching, Wanda! I'm glad my videos have been helpful. 💚
Can we *pleaseeee* get a Hoya Lacunosa/Khroniana tour! Or even just all the smol leaf hoya tour 🥹
Your wish is my command.
Does Camilla export to the USA?
Where were your hoyas imported from?
Ok let’s change our name no more Begonia .. love you
Back when I did the first good ole purchase of my Hoya this seller put spagnum moss and leca in a soil mixture and said that it was ‘one type of soil mixture’ and my Hoya was literally dying. When I wrote the bad review the person instead of giving me a refund ended up getting rid of my review and the moment I repotted her she did extremely well without that weird soil.
It's good that you figured it out quickly. Unfortunately a lot of people don't repot quickly or inspect the roots. Sorry the vendor wasn't responsive!
Thanks for the fun video! 😊
r u gonna do a hoya tour
You have a giant stash of plants in your home somewhere?
Did I miss the video where we were shown these plants? Or is that not gonna happen?
😂 I have been sharing lots of stories on IG but I didn't have time to film the new Hoyas yet. You'll see the Hoyas, hold on to your pants.
Hello 👋 from the 🇬🇧
I agree on the blooming point, I've had a few barely rooted cuttings flower, they're in my milsbo so the lighting conditions are on point. I've a mature pubicalyx and that has just bloomed for me after 3 years in my care..
I do hope the hand pollination worked, its very exciting. I love all of your videos, theyre very informative and light hearted at the same time, fabulous content. Take care ❤️
Thank you, Wendy! I also have a pubicalyx that I'm hoping will bloom this year. 🤞 I hope the blooms smell good!
@@betsybegonia Oh I hope yours does 🤞 it filled the room with a lovely light slightly sweet perfume smell, very pleasant not sickly at all and was much stronger at night I found 🌸
Hi Betsy! I'm sorry that your hoyas had a rough trip. From what I've seen, ordering imported plants is very hit and miss. I do hope that you will go into more detail on sing pon., like how you water plants in it, fertilizing, and what fertilizer you use. Also, are you using pon for plants other than hoyas? Thank you so much for sharing!
I would love to see a hoya pollination video when you have it under your belt
Yay! My first Pothos Pals shoutout! 🥰

Good afternoon Lady B. (Late evening in Lille) ...
I might try my hand at Hoyas one of these days ... But first; I need to gain a little bit more experience with the plants I have right now ... Kind of new in the plant world ...
As always; Great video ... Thanks for posting ... See you in the next one ... ✌🙂🪴
I will warn you that if you get one you will soon have ten. 😅
Omg I love you 😂 4:03
Thank you 🌱 ❤
I'd imagine there is some truth to the myths - of course, they dont apply to all hoya. Here's what I think.
Rootbound:
megalaster is a particular one which likes to fill the pot with roots before actually growing.
Maturity before blooming:
1) hoyas with large flowers (e.g. gigas, lauterbachii, the other eriostemma types) do need to grow large before they start flowering.
2) cuttings with peduncles already present - would bloom. cuttings without peduncles - would not produce peduncles unless they're really happy.
Sun:
gonna go out on a leg to say that hoyas like direct sun. all of them (even linearis, hypolasia). just avoid excess heat. some, however, need more humidity + ventilation than others.
Most cuttings seem to develop peduncles very early on in the tents. I think they wouldn't have developed them if it weren't for the high light.
@@betsybegonia do have some small hoyas which I would like to see bloom - waymaniae, kanyakumariana, carmelae, serpens. these seem to be rather slow for me.
BETTTSSSYYYY - SHOW US YOUR LACUNOSA COLLECTION!!! Please! 😇😇💖💖🙏🙏

@@betsybegonia YAAAYYY!!! 😆😆
I feel like the only reazon i have hoyas is as Challenge to myself to make them flower, so i can play with the flower see the layers and destroy them, taste the flower sap. I only hate that i have to put them of something so they can trail and vine up. Like why can You just hang and cascate down.
The vining can get a little annoying when they try to grow on things they're not meant to. Mine never want to grow on their own trellises, only their neighbor's.
