I love reading: 1. P.S. The Hoyan by Christine M. Burton (no longer updated but has a lot of info): www.psthehoyan.com/ 2. Simply starting with a Google search about a specific plant and deep-diving to wherever the Internet takes me. This can mean lots of websites in Polish, Russian, Thai, Mandarin... I just use the auto Google Translate option in Google Chrome. 3. I have a book called The Genus Hoya by Anders Wennström and Katarina Stenman that I really enjoy poking around in. At first I thought it would be a coffee table book but to be honest it floats around my apartment wherever I go. 😂 4. Botany in a Day is highly recommended for anyone wanting to learn the basics of Botany and how to recognize plants by family, etc.: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botany_in_a_Day 5. You are adorable, terrifying and beautiful when you make your angry-fierce face, and just a joy to watch. Always glad to see a new video. Thanks for your amazing personality!
Hi. I love Hoyas and started to look them up on RUclips you came up. Thanks! What is the mixture you use for your Hoyas? I’d like to try for some of mine. It almost looked like I saw a Leca ball or two in it.
You acquired some very nice hoyas, The plant gods were smiling on you this weekend. Congratulations to you, I only have one hoya currently but would love to find the chelsii and the krinkle 8. Of course a few verigated ones would be nice too lol and so it goes for all of us plant addicts.
Wow! I grew up in Colorado, and my grandmother use to have a Hoya plant that would flower a few times a year, and always wondered what this plant was called. My mother use to call it"Jesus Tears"..with a gorgeous light pink and mauve bunch of flowers, where a tiny bit of clear liquid would be secreted from it, which is the 'tear' they are refering to..
You, my dear, are just precious! You’re excitement over plants is contagious. I’ve been trying to not be a plant murderer and gave it another go recently. I got a peperomia obtusifolia variegata a few days ago and my excitement level was as high as yours getting hoyas! Baby steps for me... I love that I ran into your videos in my attempt to be “houseplant educated” 😊
What a wonderful video thank you so much. I hope that when your Hoya babies are ready, you will do a video on pruning for bushing out. I have the exact problem you mentioned about sad single vine in a pot because I'm too scared to try pruning them. Also could you maybe do a video on the clay ball thingys, I've seen and read about them but am not sure how and when to use them. Thank you again and I look forward to your next video.
I have some expanded clay aggregate in my soil mix simply because I have a giant bucket of soil mix and I got a bunch of clay balls in it while I was running a ton of experiments in my kitchen for that Perched Water Table video that I did: ruclips.net/video/mNTjSLfwRDw/видео.html But honestly it's because I'm just too lazy to pick them all out. It's unnecessary to use them. I'd rather opt for tree bark bits and perlite.
I really like the Hoya with the red leaves I would love to have one what is the name of it again? I am glad you said not to plant them in clay pots I have never heard that before. I have always had just hoyas but I have seen some very beautiful begonias that I am going to purchase. Do you care for them a lot like Hoyas like I have heard others talk about? Thank you for all the information you share.
Hey! I just found you from crazy plant guy. You are awesome. Smart, funny, & beautiful! I love Hoyas but after killing my first about a year ago I realized I needed to try again later. I found myself drooling & staring at a curtsii the other day but I promised my hubby I wouldn’t buy any more plants this year. It’s October 🥺 In his defense we moved into a new home this spring and suddenly it’s like the Amazon in here 😂 So I live vicariously through you, my fellow plant lover. 🌱♥️
Hey Betsy, congratulations on the growing family! I still feel silly about creating a RUclips channel where I talk about my plants. But I see all the plant related channels I follow are growing, and I go 😞, "What are you waiting for"? But I'm still hanging back. I enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing
You just gotta do the thing. You won't learn and grow and improve in a skill unless you just do it, and keep doing it, even when you feel like it's really bad at first. You just have to push through that and keep doing the thing.
I've decided that hoyas are my spirit plant, thanks to you. I have a tiny space and I want to fill it with hella hoyas! I'm even propagating (and using big fancy plant lady words) my one and only hoya - carnosa krimson queeeeeen after watching a previous video of yours. YAY!
I just discovered your channel a few weeks ago and I love it! Do you ever get homesick for the U.S. living in France for so long? I always think about moving overseas but worry about the culture shock and adjustment to it over time.
The first 3 months were a blast, then months 6-8 were really tough. Then I made friends and met my husband so things began to improve. Now, it's home to me. Sometimes, yes, I daydream about living in a place where English is the native language. But life is really, really wonderful here in France.
As soon as my notification said "BETSY BEGONIA" I stopped cleaning the kitchen and sat down with you and coffee (it's 6:50 am in Arizona). Yes there is something wrong with you but clearly we love it ❤
Betsy!! I'm not even done watching your video, but I need to comment! Love all of the hoyas so far! Also, I have always been tempted to drink during my videos, I will need to try this! hahah
Woooooow!!! So so so *JEALOUS* ***JEALOUS*** (for the hoyas and the travel) I'm actually waiting for a hoya to arrive as we speak, so yaaay!!!!! A swedish friend has also promised she'd sent me some of her cuttings if the frigging weather ever decides to warm up, I'm looking forward to that!!!! You know you HAVE to change your YT name, now, right? Betsy Hoya
It's good to see someone who knows nomenclature and taxonomy. I'm training to be a ichthyological taxonomist specialising in SA Siluriformes, we do have slightly different nomenclature due to the ICZN compared to botany who use the ICN. It's a dying art really and needs more people like you interested in it, there are soo many species unclassified due to poor funding and generally few people trained up. It's a field that needs more popularity, how can we conserve what we don't know nor classify. You're interest and knowledge would be really useful in a museum, if you have the time you should contact one of the curators as a lot are desperate for volunteers with their collections.
Wonderful new addition to your collection! Love those big leaves and the little leaves ones are cute too! Hoya meriditii is so beautiful! Looking forward to see your updates on them. I love spring since my hoyas have woken up and started to grow leaves. Thanks for sharing and happy growing!
This channel was suggested in my feeds by RUclips today... Subscribed right away. Amazing content and Betsy is too funny!! 😂 (And finally I'm subscribed to a plant channel based in Europe) Greetings from the NL!!
I found your channel through Jenna Marbles' "Plant Tour"-video. So glad I did! You're awesome! I'm Swedish and didn't know the Swedish Hoya Society exists... Gonna check that out immediately!
Hey Betsy, I have a question. The underside of a few of my hoya leaves are starting to look wrinkled. I don't know the cause but I think it's because lack of water (I dont water them often. once a month or once every 2 weeks). If I start watering it properly, will the leaves un-shrivel and get better?
Gosh it really depends on the Hoya and your watering regimen. If it's underwatered, the leaves can wrinle due to drought stress/dehydration. But I have also seen this occur in Hoyas that are OVERwatered. Basically, overwatering causes root rot and then when the roots rot away the stems shut down and then water is not transferred to the leaves, the whole cycle is shut down, etc. and they begin to wrinkle because they are dehydrated due to root rot. So... it depends.
@@betsybegonia so i watered it and the leaves were still limp and shrively. Since you mentioned root rot, I pulled it out of the soil to inspect but the roots looked healthy! I ended up repotting the cutting with the wrinkly leaves (i had a bunch of hoya cuttings in a pot), watered it thoroughly, and the next day I saw an improvement! 3 days later, the leaves are thick again, hard, and really starting to smooth out. No more shriveled leaves :D
I hate that I can only speak one language. I have tried Spanish, Portuguese, and French in my lifetime and just couldn’t grasp it. I think that part of my brain is broken 😩 This video was everything I wanted and then some. Your channel is growing so fast because you’re an authentic person, with great information, and an entertaining delivery. A lot of people on YT give off this fake vibe where it’s obvious they’re ...performing? Struggling to word it, but your videos feel like you are talking to the viewer, like we’re hanging out. Harli has that good feel too. I hope that makes sense but every successful channel has that *thing* you have and I’m here 👏🏻 for 👏🏻 it 👏🏻 Now to fight the urge to drive an hour and a half to Logee’s for more hoyas for the next 24 hours. 😅
Learning another language takes serious commitment. I've been in France for almost 8 years and I'm still not fluent. Thanks a lot for your kind words. I just love making videos, it's a ton of fun. I don't want to tell you what to do, but you should probably drive to Logee's. 😂
Thx so much for the information. Literally just received my first Hoya last night. I wasn't seeing the big deal, at first, until i saw the one with the large circle leaves...Ob- something...lol! Great video. Appreciate it.
It's a beautiful one!!! I have one but it's real funky. It is really lumpy and weird, I'm not sure why. I'm waiting for it to continue growing but it seems frozen in time. I may get another one that looks and grows normally in the future.
I just got a Hoya Naumanii. I've never heard of it and it was the only on at my local plant store. (I picked up 2 plants that they were the only one at the store). Know anything about Naumanii?
It may have just been my ignorance at the time but I really never noticed the same volume of either in the states. I’m a terrible plant window peeker! Lol
@@MelissaWalker82 I think that in the States, since the sidewalk is so far from the windows of the house, it's harder to notice. Here in Paris, you can literally crawl in peoples' windows. I know because someone did it to me twice. 😂
Hey, I managed to get ten Hoya cuttings after this video. No blame, I just want to thank you for just being your beautiful you. And I would like to ask you if you had ever suffered -hoppefully not- from black dots and blackening on Hoya leaves. It started with my kerii and now my Jennifer :(. Help.
Betsy!!! I love this video. I love Hoyas so much. I travel to Stockholm every year to visit family and have known about the Hoya society but unfortunately I'm unable to cary anything back to NYC. Like Delia sooooooo jealous.
@@betsybegonia Ha! Well no, they don't usually. But ya know when you check the immigration box that asks if you're carrying any live cultures or plants and your hole life flashes by your eyes because if lie and get caught you'll be sent to jail where they're probably aren't any plants.😱
@@betsybegonia Letting you know that your video sparked a fierce hunt for rare Hoyas. I placed an order with PPplant.com they have an amazing selection but they are located in Thailand. The owner has an export license and said I'll get them next week, fingers crossed. I ordered Hoya: Rosita, Patrisia, Pectinoides and Australis Lisa Variagata. I'll let you know how it goes or if it's a scam. 😬
Omg I love you hahahahah laughed so much. I have about 7 hoyas and the possums got to them so I'm watching videos waiting for them to grow back. Awesome video!
Wow 19 euros was the most expensive plant. I converted that to ~23 usd. My jaw dropped. I just spent almost a hundred usd for a cutting of callistophylla. The plant prices post covid are insane. If only I could have gone to Stockholm with you that day. Btw I miss you, come back....
I live vicariously through you and r/succulents until I can expand my collection this summer. Oh and Jenna Marbles. Her video finally inspired me to get into plants, and I found your channel through her!
I want more hoyas too!!! But.....I don't see many around here except the same kind. I live in Canada and where I live not many places to buy houseplants in general. Loved your haul......I like watching Doug Chamberlain too because of all his hoyas
@@betsybegonia me TOO!!!! He's got better things to do. Anyway, I have a blog article about it: betsybegonia.com/2018/08/31/how-to-keep-cats-out-of-houseplants/
@@betsybegonia Thank you - your blog post is super helpful. Sadly my cat has gone after my parlor palm as well so I'm going to try some of your methods out!
I'm from Belgium too !!! But I live in Montréal, WHERE IT'S STILL PRETTY MUCH WINTER *ewww*
I would love it if you would share some of the reading you do about plants, you seem to be so well informed! What books/website are your favorite?
I'm glad I have found your channel, you're so fun to watch!
I love reading:
1. P.S. The Hoyan by Christine M. Burton (no longer updated but has a lot of info): www.psthehoyan.com/
4. Botany in a Day is highly recommended for anyone wanting to learn the basics of Botany and how to recognize plants by family, etc.: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botany_in_a_Day
5. Doug Chamberlain's website about his Hoya collection and experiences: vermonthoyas.com/

@@betsybegonia Oh wow I've got plenty to keep me busy for a while in here! Thank you so much
I've never been a huge hoya person but dammmnnn this is so cool. I'm so happy for you and your new rare babies
Thank yoouuu!
I NEVER comment.. but I laughed so hard watching your video! Congratulations on your new Hoyas. They are all very beautiful!
Thanks so much for taking the time to leave such a wonderful comment. I'm really glad you enjoy my weird videos! 🙂
You are adorable, terrifying and beautiful when you make your angry-fierce face, and just a joy to watch. Always glad to see a new video. Thanks for your amazing personality!
There's a monster within us all. Mine just gets really excited about Hoyas. 😂
Hi. I love Hoyas and started to look them up on RUclips you came up. Thanks!
What is the mixture you use for your Hoyas? I’d like to try for some of mine. It almost looked like I saw a Leca ball or two in it.
Your excitement is amazing :) this is how I feel about philodendron and I act this way every time I cross another rare variety off my list!
Oh man I just ordered some new Begonias. YOU JUST WAIT TIL THEY ARRIVE!
I just love your videos and your sense of humor! I'm from Holland btw :) Hi!
Hi! Thank you so much for watching my channel. 💚
You acquired some very nice hoyas, The plant gods were smiling on you this weekend. Congratulations to you, I only have one hoya currently but would love to find the chelsii and the krinkle 8. Of course a few verigated ones would be nice too lol and so it goes for all of us plant addicts.
You’re great fun to watch and very informative. Thank you
Wow, that's definitely a name I've never heard for Hoya before!
That's fantastic, starting houseplants as a hobby is exciting. Good for you. 🙂 Thanks so much for watching my channel.
I have some expanded clay aggregate in my soil mix simply because I have a giant bucket of soil mix and I got a bunch of clay balls in it while I was running a ton of experiments in my kitchen for that Perched Water Table video that I did: ruclips.net/video/mNTjSLfwRDw/видео.html
But honestly it's because I'm just too lazy to pick them all out. It's unnecessary to use them. I'd rather opt for tree bark bits and perlite.
You’re a fun person to watch . Love your content you’re hilariously lighted love your spirit!
I have no hoyas, but today, I learned the word "peduncle." It's a funny word like uvula and pupa. Great video. Thanks for the laughs!
Thanks for watching! 🙂
Yeah, I've Killed That We used to have a cat named Uncle Dunkle. Lol. No clue why I’m telling you, just seemed mildly germaine. 🤣
@@stockinettestitch That is such a good name. My dad had a cat named Crapper John. That's my story.
Betsy Begonia yeah....I’m pretty sure Crapper John beats Uncle Dunkle. 😆👍🏻
You make the way I feel about my plant completely normal. ☺️ Thanks.
You really are freakin AMAZING!!! I learned soooooo much from you seriously!! Thanks for sharing and researching for all of us..
Thank you so much for watching!
I've decided that hoyas are my spirit plant, thanks to you. I have a tiny space and I want to fill it with hella hoyas! I'm even propagating (and using big fancy plant lady words) my one and only hoya - carnosa krimson queeeeeen after watching a previous video of yours. YAY!
That's the most wonderful thing I've heard all day. 😍
Yes there is something wrong with you but clearly we love it ❤
I found a community to accept me for who I am. 😍😂
I love your channel! Thank you for posting!
Betsy!! I'm not even done watching your video, but I need to comment! Love all of the hoyas so far! Also, I have always been tempted to drink during my videos, I will need to try this! hahah
Oh my gosh, now I'm enabling Hoya hoarding and alcoholism! 🙈😂
@@betsybegonia then you'll notice in my new videos I'm casually holding wine in my hand EVERYTIME..or better yet tequila!

Just don't drink the Hoya milk!
Woooooow!!! So so so *JEALOUS*
***JEALOUS*** (for the hoyas and the travel)
I'm actually waiting for a hoya to arrive as we speak, so yaaay!!!!!
A swedish friend has also promised she'd sent me some of her cuttings if the frigging weather ever decides to warm up, I'm looking forward to that!!!!
You know you HAVE to change your YT name, now, right?
Betsy Hoya
I'm really excited for you! Share pics on Instagraaaam!
Thanks for watching! I'm also looking forward to seeing some immense growth this summer! Yay!
This channel was suggested in my feeds by RUclips today... Subscribed right away. Amazing content and Betsy is too funny!! 😂 (And finally I'm subscribed to a plant channel based in Europe) Greetings from the NL!!
Oh my gosh! I purchased my two very first hoya cuttings ever....I have no clue what they are and I am obsessed with them already 😂
Was it easy to bring the cuttings on the flight back to Paris? Any customs check or not within Europe?
No, it was fine. Since Sweden is within the EU there were no issues at all bringing plants in my carry-on. 🙂
I found your channel through Jenna Marbles' "Plant Tour"-video. So glad I did! You're awesome! I'm Swedish and didn't know the Swedish Hoya Society exists... Gonna check that out immediately!
They're lovely people!
Your videos are so FUN! 💚 Can’t get enough!!
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoy the weird stuff I put out. 😂
@@jyae7777 That's great news!
I hate that I can only speak one language. I have tried Spanish, Portuguese, and French in my lifetime and just couldn’t grasp it. I think that part of my brain is broken 😩
This video was everything I wanted and then some. I hope that makes sense but every successful channel has that *thing* you have and I’m here 👏🏻 for 👏🏻 it 👏🏻
Now to fight the urge to drive an hour and a half to Logee’s for more hoyas for the next 24 hours. 😅
The plant community seriously is the nicest, too! I agree! Just more proof people benefit from being around nature!
Betsy Begonia Obovata....just looked at my invoice.
It's a beautiful one!!! I have one but it's real funky. It is really lumpy and weird, I'm not sure why. I'm waiting for it to continue growing but it seems frozen in time. I may get another one that looks and grows normally in the future.
I never really loved hoyas until I saw your hoya bella in another video.... Now I'm dying for some but i don't live near any nurseries 😭 pray for me
You'll get one, no worries. 🙂 IT WILL COME!
Great buys, glad you were able to go.
It was a wonderful experience and the sun was shining all weekend. I'll definitely return!
I just got a Hoya Naumanii. I've never heard of it and it was the only on at my local plant store. (I picked up 2 plants that they were the only one at the store). Know anything about Naumanii?
There really are so many Hoyas here! Nearly every Swede seems to have a Hoya and a Phalaenopsis in their windows. Glad you had fun!! :)
Orchids are super common here but definitely not Hoya. We need more!
Betsy Begonia omg that’s going too far! 😂
Hahahaha you are so funny! You display exactly what I feel when I look at my Hoya collection XD
Hoyamygosh that Hoya walliniana is amazing! That foliage!

@@betsybegonia Ha! Well no, they don't usually. But ya know when you check the immigration box that asks if you're carrying any live cultures or plants and your hole life flashes by your eyes because if lie and get caught you'll be sent to jail where they're probably aren't any plants.😱
