    Truthfully I used to do a lot of drugs when I needed an escape then one day I got reminiscent about my younger years before the drugs and I used to love growing things so one day I bought 3 orchids and then some more and more and I realized i still have a very green thumb so now I try to spend any of my extra money that I would on illicit things I spent on plants and pot and soil and stuff. The balance soon shifted to where now most of my money goes to my plants and I find that I’m a lot less stressful than I’ve been in years and I’ve got all these beautiful living things that need me and I’m entrusted in making sure I provide them everything they need to live every day. Orchids are great for recovery...succulents not so much.

    The past few years I’ve referred to myself as the human “whack a mole”! I pop my head up to experience the world and life firmly whacks me on the head until I’m back in my hole! Thus, what do I do when overwhelmed? Pets, plants and if I’m very lucky... a bit of Betsy Begonia who is somehow equal parts intelligent and incredibly humorous - a rare combination indeed. Would love for you to do a Q&A video as I spend many hours pondering such thoughts as “Is Betsy a botanist from Boston who bounded to Belgium to begin anew?” (Paris doesn’t BEGIN with a “b” after all) 😳 Seriously though, would love to know more about you! Also, since there seem to be no Hoyas available in Wisconsin except the Carnosa, I’ve just ordered 4 plants on my wishlist from Pistils Nursery in Portland (didn’t even plan the alliteration there)! Obovata, Kerii, Publicalyx and Compacta are en route in 6” pots. I’ve no idea what to do for them once here so any tips appreciated! GLAD YOU ARE BACK! 💕

    • @betsybegonia
      @betsybegonia  5 лет назад +6

      It's always a cause for debate but I see now that if there's any trouble in re-potting, soaking in water solves the issue. I wouldn't pot certain Hoya in terracotta like H. bella or H. lacunosa, but I imagine H. carnosa or H. compacta would do fine since they retain a lot of water and can dry out a bit.

    Hello Betsy, i bought a Hoya Carnosa about 4 days ago. I'm concerned because i usually trust the medium potting mix most of my plants come in, but seeing as how this is my first Hoya ever, i noticed that your soil is completely different from my Hoyas soil, mine seems to be in a all Orchid bark potting medium. Should i repot my hoya, and perhaps use that same bark it came in, but add cactus soil to sort of help retain a tad bit more moisture as opposed to full on bark?

    I’m late to this video! i’m glad to hear 2019 is easing up a little, and I hope it’s kinder from here on out!
    For me, when lots of things seem bad or out of control, I try to focus on the good things, especially good things that happened specifically because I did them. A good example is my double impatiens cutting, which I saved from near death (it got root rot on its very first roots, the poor thing)! It helps me to remember that I’ve got the heart, mind, and moxie to make it through whatever’s plaguing me. Best of luck!

    Hi Betsy ~ I've been watching your videos for quite a while now, but haven't commented before. I literally LOVE your videos! I'm glad your back. Your sense of humor is fabulous and makes me laugh a lot and your knowledge on plants is top notch. Hopefully the rest of 2019 is much better for you. For decompressing, I look for your videos and other plant videos. They never fail to make me feel better. BTW, I'm glad your cats are doing better, too. I noticed that the plastic pots had a lot of fairly good sized holes in them. Did you line the bottoms to help keep the soil mix in? I need to repot some hoyas that I've had for a long time. I have one in a pot with a saucer and the others are in pots that sit in decorative pots and I bottom water them. Not sure which is best..... Anyway, I hope you have a wonderful day!

    • @betsybegonia
      @betsybegonia  5 лет назад

      Hi Sandy! Thank you so much for watching my channel. I do not put anything in the bottom to cover the holes at all. I don't have any problems with soil getting everywhere personally, it seems to stay put. When it comes to watering, I think it depends on the plant. I hear it's best to bottom-water African violets but only because tap water can brown their leaves.

Must be a lot we can’t get in the US I decompress planting my succulents and cacti, and of course Hoya’s 😄, I also have a ton of houseplants my other passion is spending time with my critters, doggies and guinea pigs, and my bird, oh and I also take care of 4 feral cats that like to hang out at my house. My husband said our house is like a zoo 😝. I can’t wait for Spring to see if I can get more Hoya’s. Unfortunately I can’t get them here in central Cali, so my sister sends me plants from Florida. Yes I could order cuttings, and spend a lot, for very little, or just get her to mail me big full sized plants 🤗. Whenever we go to a bigger city I try to stop at any nursery, I know you can get awesome plants in the LA area, we don’t go that far too often 🤨. We don’t have any decent nurseries within 100 miles, we only have Lowe’s or Home Depot. They definitely never carry Hoya’s, which is weird cause other stores in different states carry them, not sure why we don’t get them. At Lowe’s, I did ask the garden center manager, she said she doesn’t get to order, it just automatically gets ordered at their HQ. I still need to check with the Home Depot manager to see if they can order specific plants. Anyways, I’m rambling on, I hope your year improves, how much longer are you going to be in France? Glad you back, can you remind me, did you put any soil in with your Staghorn mounts? I mounted a baby one, but it doesn’t seem to stay moist enough, I just used sphagnum moss wrapped around the root ball, should I have added some potting soil? Two of the leaves are drooping, like it’s thirsty. I need help! I need to save my baby staghorn 🥺. Okay, please let me know ASAP. Happy Planting 💜🌺🌸

      Hey! Thanks so much for watching. I have 24 Hoya types right now:
      Hoya davidcummingii
      H. bella
      H. ‘Mathilde’
      H. brevialata
      H. australis
      H. australis ‘Lisa’
      H. lacunosa
      H. carnosa
      H. carnosa compacta
      H. carnosa ‘Rubra’
      H. carnosa ‘Krimson Queen’
      H. burtoniae
      H. thomsonii
      H. pubicalyz ‘Black Dragon’
      H. kerrii
      H. memoria
      H. lobbii
      H. ‘Chouke’
      H. serpens
      H. obovata
      H. merrillii aff. red leaves
      H. obscura
      H. aff. lyi botanova
      H. linearis
      This March I'll go to a garden show in Stockholm and try to buy some cuttings from the Swedish Hoya Association as they have an incredibly high number of varieties that I haven't found here in France.
      I have lived in France for 7.5 years and I plan to stay here indefinitely. 🙂
      As for the staghorn ferns, there is no much soil beneath the sphagnum moss to be honest, and they are drying out a lot faster than usual lately so I think I need to re-mount them with more sphagnum moss to retain more water!
      I hope I covered everything. 😀

      Goodness we separated them, used Feliway, and started giving them supplements with L-theanine and milk protein which is meant to soothe and calm. They've gone back to normal, the only thing left was that the one who'd gone crazy still has food anxiety. So I created a little black box that she can hop into and eat in there. She loves it and feels very safe and the other cat doesn't bother trying to get in (he's too fat 😂). It's great because we normally use autofeeders but for the past 2 months we had to feed them three times a day in separate rooms. 😅 So glad we're back on the autofeeders and she enjoys her dark dining restaurant. 😂

      @MelissaWalker82 5 лет назад

      Betsy Begonia boxes helped us too!! We couldn’t get her to take any of the calming treats but eventually the feliway helped us reintroduce them and the boxes gave her somewhere to hide when she was feeling a bit stressed. We were all feeling a bit stressed for a while. I could have used a human sized box frankly. So glad your two worked it out!!

    Hi Betsy! Good video! I would truly appreciate it if you would tell me, again, the hybridizer of both H. 'Chouke' & H. 'Mathilde.' (Please settle an argument/debate for me! Would you please write to me the correct pronunciation of Mathilde? Honestly! I've heard about 5 renditions! This debate ENDS with your answer! Lol!) I'll have to search for the former plant and I have the latter, although it's very small! I'm always very excited to see or hear of different varieties of hoya than the ones that I have. Your lobbii & serpens are already on my plant wish list. I have what was sold to me as a merrillii; but, I'm not confident that my plant is that one. A tip for the hoya videos in the future: Would you please let us look at each cutting or plant that you're repotting for a while longer, either before or after the repotting, if not both? I've rewatched several times; but, can't actually make an identification. Also, please give us the author's name of "The Hoyan" again. Thanks in advance. You're a peach! Or a grape!?! Fruity??? You're great! Thanks so much for sharing the hoya history, your mix, opinion on pots for hoyas & tips! I would have loved a glass of the wine, too; but, all-in-all, I love this more laid back style of video! Take care and plant love! 🌾💜

      Hi Margie, here's a link to a RUclips video with a pronunciation guide for the name "Mathilde": ruclips.net/video/OpJLDrX4nEk/видео.html
      Forgive me for pronouncing it with more of a French accent, this is my habit since this is a French name and I know that the creator is Belgian, so he would likely pronounce it this way as well: ruclips.net/video/gsNfV48rBvk/видео.html
      But it isn't necessary. It's like Matilda, but without the "a" sound on the end. Mah-tild or mah-teeld would be fine.
      The female botanist that I referred to is named Christine M. Burton. You will notice that I display the text of her name and the publication across the screen in this video. Her publication is called P.S. The Hoyan: www.psthehoyan.com/
      I don't know how to get ahold of any publications earlier than those listed on that site, much to my dismay.
      I will try to show longer shots of plants in the future, thanks for the tip.

    • @betsybegonia
      @betsybegonia  5 лет назад +1

Unfortunately my mom insisted it'd do great in a super bright spot in my veranda, so it DIED that summer. x_x
