Wow, what a beautiful collection. Every time I see a new hoya I pick it up. I'm so in love with them all. You never fail at making me smile. Thanks so much for that. Much love and many blessings.
Your begonia is saying, "Well, the channel is called Betsy Begonia not Betsy Hoya." 😂 Your cat has condo in the corner there!🏠🐈 Lovely hoya collection and home! 🌿💚
Hi Betsy! Do NOT get rid off the shelving!!! Paint them all white and you will have new units!! =D It's going to make a nice contrast with the pots and the greenery.
From my understanding no plant actually benefits from being truly root bound, I think the concept came from the idea that a stressed plant wants to survive and as a half ditched effort will flower in order go to seed. This I think happens out in nature but our houseplants are typically grown in nurseries and wont behave the same. That being said there are many many many houseplants that do prefer to be somewhat "pot" bound, meaning they prefer to fit snuggly in a pot as opposed to having lots of space in the pot but without being suffocated like a "root" bound plant. I really hope that made sense. Your Hoyas are stunning btw! Thank you for sharing! You really are fun to watch!
Hoya my gosh ! So happy for a nice long video on Hoyas from you !! Doing happy dance in Kansas USA! Toto is to hot to dance with me 😉😆... sorry had to do the Oz thing ! Lol ! Added 2 more Hoyas to my I must HAVE ONE list !
Check out the full size Vittjsö ikea shelfs. Simple, smart and actually quite nice looking! Perfect for flower's in my mind cuz of some glass and some all white shelving. I love love love mine 😍
Hi Betsy! How are you? HOYA-O-BOYA! Thanks for sharing all your Hoyas. AWESOME! I gave gotten a lot of small Hoya non-rooted cuttings. I propagated them in water. Took a long time, but 100% successful. They are really growing very well this summer. I went to Lowe's last week and bought Golden, Neon and Cebu Blue Pothos. Gorgeous, huge, full hanging baskets. This week I bought a Hoya Rubra. It too is G,H,F hanging basket. Enjoy! Gerry 😎
I love that you often know the history of a plant, or interesting facts about certain species. I’d love to see a video where you talk about interesting facts that you’ve learned through research. An example being that I learned from you why alocasia amazonica is named that, despite not having anything to do with the Amazon.
since I didn't watch that video or I miss that or I forgot about it and need reminded about how the alocasia Amazonian got its name even though it didn't grow in the Amazon Please please please
Great video! I have a hoya carnosa splash that I got as a cutting 17 years ago it started blooming in year 5 (2003) and has bloomed every year since from May to October. The only reason I repotted it this year (March 2020) was, 6 older leaves turned yellow at the same time. It has 30 peduncles and counting. I realise that you cannot see the plant, I can send a picture, but root bound (for me) is the way to go if you want it to produce lots of leaves and flower consistently.
Thank you for the tour! It was very interesting. Your enthusiasm is really contagious! My theory on the roots of Hoya is that they prefer to be in humid AIR, because that is where they naturally grow generally speaking, in the air on a tree in a humid climate. Propagating in a very humid and warm environment works very well, even without putting a cutting in a medium or water. Just warm and humid air is enough, or at least that is my experience. So because we do not have such a climate in the Netherlands, I like to create this for them in a pot. I think the most important is that there is there is AIR in the pot with high humidity. So vaporized water, not water as such. Water in fluid form can rot the roots more easy. As long as it is humid air that is around the roots, the Hoya feels at home. By putting bark and perlite in the medium, it creates air pockets that are humid, not a water reservoir. I hope I am making sense :) I agree that Hoya do not necessarily prefer being rootbound, allthough I do think they can tolerate it well. We repotted my moms Hoya Carnosa of over 30 years old the other day. It was completely root bound and still did fairly well. We now put it in a bigger pot on a medium of bark, potting soil and perlite. I am so curious to see how it will do! I think Hoya like to have a lot of space around the roots, for the same reason, that they can be in vaporized water that is in between the medium. The more the better :) I put my Hoya in orchid pots, which are transparant so it is easy for me to see if they are still humid or if they like a rinse :)
I also agree about the rootbound theory. I think it has more to do with water and root health. Rootbound plants tend to dry out faster and most plant keepers tend to overwater. This happens even more with hoya since folks tend to use regular potting soil with them. I repotted mine this year in better media and a couple plants that have been growing peduncles with no flowers bloomed for the first time!
Well aren't you an absolute delight! I'm new here and pretty new to Hoyas, and I had also heard about Hoyas needing to be root bound to flower. When I got mine as a 6 leaf cutting, I planted it into a decent sized pot (10") for its size and stuck it in the brightest indirect light in my house. It grew a TON over one year, increasing its size by at least 5x. When it was about 2 years old it gave me a single flower cluster. Fast forward one more year to this spring and it has exploded with flowers. Over 30 flower peduncles. So all in all, I don't believe it is root bound, I still water it as often as I always have and it isn't showing any signs of being root bound. I think it would have taken longer than 3 years for a 6 leaf cutting to outgrow a 10" pot. But maybe I am wrong, it is a monster plant now. Haha
I feel the same way you feel about the "root bound" theory. My bella and pubicalix have bloomed and are not root bound at all. There is very popular orchid channel on here who also states it's not true. Anywho love the tour and I'm jealous of your Australis! It's so beautiful 😍💕
Okay, if you didn't "pop" out with a Hoya in your hands, you must have arrived with a begonia. ;-) Oh, would you please tell me where I might find one of those Hoya Monsteras? You're a delight.
Hi Betsy! You have a great Hoya collection. It's so nice that you give all of the names. I've had a beautiful Hoya for years that started out as cuttings from my Mom and Sister and I didn't know what it was. Now, I believe, it is a Hoya Carnosa. It bloomed for me twice, but hasn't bloomed again in over a year and it's in the same spot. When it first bloomed it was still in water propagation. I love your Hoya Bella, david cummingii and lacunosa for their flowering abilities. I'd really like to find them. I'm more into the foliage, too, but flowers are a bonus! It was fun seeing a quick look at your living room, kitchen and terrace. It appears that your veranda is a really nice size. I'd love to see a tour of all of your plants, living quarters and terrace. I loved this longer video and would watch anything that you want to upload! You're so much fun to watch! Thank you for sharing!
Loved this haul, glad I came across your channel. I will binge watch all your videos. I live in the states and don't have air condition and refuse to get it, I prefer to open the windows or take cold shower when it gets to hot.
My H serpens wasn't growing either. It's an 'aquarium' plant and does well in extra humidity -someone told me- so I put it in my hot box and in less than two weeks I've got node action!
I had the same issue with Hoya leaves ! My obovata and one of my Karrii put out tiny little leafs and they completely disappeared ! I looked everyone and I’ve never found them lol super weird
Hoya Boya!! you have an amazing Hoya collection, I only have four so far, Hoya Obovata, Hoya Carnosa, Hindu Rope and Hoya Curtisii, when I find one if it's not too expensive I snatch it up. Thank you so much for sharing, thanks you for your humor I enjoy it so much, I jut love you and your channel so much. Have a great week, bye for now.
you could get a glass dome for the serpens to keep humidity in during the summer i am about to do that with my peperomia prostrata he hasnt been happy with me
people always say hoyas are a slippery slope and i thought i was safe from said slope (I only have a crimson princess) but then i remembered that the day i bought my crimson princess I also saw a variegated hoya carnosa compacta and i haven't been able to stop thinking about that hoya since I saw it. It's been like 6 months. it's my whole wish list.
Absolutely beautiful Hoyas.. love, love, love! I recently tried my hand at caring for a few Hoya's. Purchased the hoya carnosa rubra (krimson princess) and hoya wayetii, actually found the princess at 'Lowes'; it was the last one so I figured why not! I watch Betsy Begonia enough I'll just follow her techniques, lol :) Thanks for another informative and funny vid..
Hi Betsy I have some really cute Hoya Bella cuttings that I would like to pot up. Do you use your usual Hoya potting mix for your bella and water it more than your other Hoyas?
Thanks for sharing! Liked hearing your opinion on root bound Hoyas and also the details on reverted variegation. My obovata picta reverted so I’ll probably chop the non variegated part off and hopefully a new offshoot will be variegated if I give it more light.
Wow! Talking about your favorite Hoya's really makes your eyelashes curl up! Can you believe that i'm really struggling in the Netherlands to find any Hoya in a regular flowershop? This week i'm gonna visit a gardencenter and if they don't have any, i'm gonna order one(very expensive) online. All i want is a simple Hoya Carnosa, that shouldn't be so difficult!
That Hoya Bella in your kitchen -Amazing!! And all the other hoya´s too -beautiful! My favourite hoya is hoya you didn´t seem to have... It´s Hoya Krohniana (eskimo). It has beautiful heart shaped leaves with many silver flecks.
That Hoya bella is so freakin' gorgeous! I wasn't really a big fan of them, but the more I see them (especially as established/long plants) the more I like them. I have very few hoyas. I have Carnosa, Krimson Queen, and just recently bought callistophylla because it's so gorgeous. I hope you can root/save yours!
Hi Betsy, yes!! This was a video I was really hoping you would do, so thank you. I have once again added to my wishlist, this slippery slope is no joke!! 🙊 also a request I would like to make: I love videos about background stories and more scientific videos like the one about the perched water table, I would love more content like that!!
I do kinda support the theory of plants (not all but many, including Hoya) producing bloom whenever they are root boud, or in generally bad conditions, I see it quite often in Orchids. My Mum have a Pink Princess that was like, 8 or 9 years old, never repotted, it was dyyyyingggg, leaves turning yellow, root bound to hell and back, BUT it was blooming like crazy! I decided to save it, it took me over an hour to free the roots, they were like solid wood at this point. But I got in a new and bigger pot with new nice soil, aaand it hasn't bloomed since... it's producing massive amount of new growth, and trailing all over the place and is looking very healthy. Plants will produce flowers in a last ditch effort to spread and multiply before dying completely. So I do believe Hoyas will produce more bloom by being root bound, but they do not LIKE being root boud and could die after too much time. Just my opinion and experience from having had hoyas for several years. Love the videos! keep
I loved this video so much! I sometimes struggle with how much of each thing I should put in a hoya soil mix. My Krimson queen just had a few yellow leaves for some reason, I cut them off but I hope it doesn't continue to affect the plant.
Hi Betsy. Could you maybe show us how your hoya's look, when you decide that they're root bound enough to be repotted? I have a valentine Kerrii and I'm unsure whether to repot it or leave it be for now 😊
I had to put my callis. in water as well. I have the regular and slim leaf versions. The regular one ( like yours ) is the one that refused to grow in the medium. It’s been doing well in water so I’m going to repot it when the riots get really substantial. I’m sure yours can turn around mine only had one leaf left by the time I went to save it. I had the same trouble with Hoya megalaster and it’s doing well now too
Beautiful collection! Can you talk about saving your hoya compacta? ...what were the symptoms, what did you do to save it... what's the time span to save the plant?
I am new to your channel and your are super funny!! 🤣🤣 Did you ever live in NYC? You definitely have the accent! Love your HOYA collection- I even took notes!!!! You and your plants are so LOVELY! ❤️🌱💕💕💕 Hello from Nashville TN but raised JERSEY 😉
I watch a bit of Summer Rayne Oaks and she describes hoyas as "liking to be root bound" because most are epiphytes so they end up living in rocky crags or the sorts with little soil. I don't have evidence either but her reasoning is enough for me!
Love your collection! I know that with some Hoya (particularly Imperialis), new growth will start to die off if it's pointing down... Not sure if you're still having issues with your Serpens, and I don't have one to speak of (someday!)... but you might try putting your Serpens on a trellis or something where it can grow up. Just a thought! :)
Loved your tour! Would love to hear care tips for some of your specific Hoya species, especially those that I know are supposed to be hard to care for like Bella, Serpens, etc :) your collection is definitely making me grow my wishlist 😍
Hoyas all more or less look the same to me, but it's nice that they get to be under the spotlight every once in a while! I want more of the begonias though!
I like.big.leaves and I cannot lie!! Loved everything especially the big leaf plants w/ the veining. That gunung gading tho... dayum!! I agree, of the hoyas I have, Lacunosa is my favorite. Do you give your hoyas direct sun? Mine are in a western window and doing great w/ the afternoon sun, but I wonder what would happen if I moved them back so they got medium ambient light.
They're in a room that faces southeast so they get lots of bright indirect light for most of the day. I keep a sheer curtain in the windows to protect them from direct sun but am considering putting some outside for direct sun like Hoya obscura.
This is just a comment, more than anything about my own train of thought a few months prior to starting watching your channel, not to anger anyone, but a lot of those plants looked to me at first glance like a random common plant you find on the streets, not something rare or amazing. But the more you talk about them, when you explain the care, their growth, everything, they become beautiful and interesting and I stop thinking they are just "grass". I find it quite amazing how the knowledge can not only change your appreciating for something but you're an actual vision of it like they become something different in your mind. Now, for another comment, is it me or you have a 3 most favourite Hoya list that has actually 15 hoyas or more? hahahahaha : )

The shelf is cute you should just repaint it😊
Love your Hoya collections, I pretty much got into Hoyas after watching your Hoya care video!!
Upgraded to a huge white shelf from IKEA on which I could install grow lights, much better.

Oh that's nice. I imagined the opposite. 😂 Thanks.
Love your collection Betsy - your Hoya Bella is amazing and inspired me to take the plunge in purchasing my own:)
Hi Betsy I have some really cute Hoya Bella cuttings that I would like to pot up. Do you use your usual Hoya potting mix for your bella and water it more than your other Hoyas?
Ahh hoyas! So glad to see such a great video!! :) :) Girl, bring back your Patreon! I'd love to support you so we see more of your lovely face
Been waiting soooo long for this!!! ☺️☺️
Thanks for sharing! Liked hearing your opinion on root bound Hoyas and also the details on reverted variegation. My obovata picta reverted so I’ll probably chop the non variegated part off and hopefully a new offshoot will be variegated if I give it more light.
Great hoya collection! Your so funny I love all of your videos!!🌻🌻

I love your funky Hoya obavada! It's unique! 😂 one of my Kerii leaves looks like that. I do wonder what it is that makes them funky like that.
I wish to someday be on this level of Hoya obsession ❤️
Your Hoya Bella looks amazing!
I have been looking forward to this! I just recently fell into the hoya rabbit hole lol. (and you should probs change your name to Betsy Hoya 😅)
Awesome video as usual..Thank you for the tour👍❤
I've heard withholding the water can encourage blooming too; i.e. stretching it out a week or two past when you would normally water but who knows...
Hi Betsy. Could you maybe show us how your hoya's look, when you decide that they're root bound enough to be repotted? I have a valentine Kerrii and I'm unsure whether to repot it or leave it be for now 😊
Love your videos! And I feel a whole lot better failing at some hoyas now.
I made a video about it, it is one of my earliest videos. 🙂
Loooved this video!!!!! Thanks for showing us around! I cannot wait to see that gunung gading grow- loving vicariously through you 😂
I watch a bit of Summer Rayne Oaks and she describes hoyas as "liking to be root bound" because most are epiphytes so they end up living in rocky crags or the sorts with little soil. I don't have evidence either but her reasoning is enough for me!
That was fantastic, your Hoyas look great !
I absolutely love your hoya collection. If you ever want to share is be one to gladly take some. My favorite species!
I couldn't wait to get off work, come home, pour a glass of wine, eat cheese and pretzels, and WATCH THIS VIDEO!!!
Love the Hoyas and funny as always
I’m so in love with your Lisa! 🥰
