Just picked up a used 1DX MI for my first full frame. Glad to see you're still shooting with it. Keep the videos coming. They've been a big help. Cheers.

For all my American Football games i shoot i have always used case 4. As you know i use Canon 1DX MKII and MKIII so i think will make all the difference between all three 1DX's.

Hi Jason. Good tip on case 4. Do you also use people or object tracking for American football? Also, are you able to use eye AF with American football? I suspect not due to the facemask. I shoot lacrosse, and the helmets make it tough to find eyes on 5DmkIV. Just picked up R7 and curious which settings might be best!

Greetings from Russia and thanks for the video! I'm using 5d Mark III to photograph rhythmic gymnastics and sport ballroom dances, and I found. that if I need to stick to 1 subject really hard, best is to put tracking sensitivity to the minimum, and other two paramentrs in the middle or +1. I'm using zone AF - 9 points in the center, since my subjects move fast and erratically, with lots of jumps and body position changes, with other settings of sensitivity camera tends to focus on the background. Got good results with this settings in most sports and reportage shoots.

Thanks Rob. I've stuck to my comfort zone of Case 4 for the past couple of years - but your video has reminded me that different AF settings should be experimented with.

Thanks Rob for the great comparison. I've selected case5 for eventing/horse trials and seemed better than case1. Especially when the focus had to be locked on the rider's head even jumping trough an obstacle. Sometimes I experienced that the focus was locked elsewhere and I missed the moment because of that (but that was happened cause of my mistake). I always use the upper middle AF-point with 4 helpers and using focus priority over speed. I adjust +1 to keep the focus locked more on the subject. This settings give me the best result I only have to follow the subject precisely.

I have been using case 4 for sometime but decided to try case 1 and I do think I get way more sports photos in focus with it then I was with 4.

Pretty good experiment. When you are focusing, do you keep the focus point over the subject and keep the back button pressed the entire time from first to last shot of the sequence?

Might be a little late to ask this but do you use AI servo and hold down the back button to continously focus?,
I normally use centre point and bbf, holding down to continously focus/track

I used Case 2 for barrel racing at a rodeo for the first time last weekend (normally use Case 1) & 1/3 of the photos were out of focus. Especially as they came out of the barrel turns, so I'm thinking it has locked onto the barrel (the obstacle) when it should've ignored it & never re-focused on the horse & rider. Sometimes I could quickly tell in the viewfinder & re-focus but other times I couldn't until too late. Very annoying, considering it's supoosed to Ignore the Obstacle

Rob Sambles so does your ability to hold that single point on the subject affect the result. Could it be that the focus point slips off the subject? Presume you are BBF and holding the button down throughout the sequence ?

I got a 1DX MK1 and if you know how to handle it you will never need to buy another camera again.
Everything else just ends up being G.A.S and overkill (look at all the PRO images that have been shot using 1DX over the years, just confirming the facts of the matter).
We now have WAAAAY more than we ever need, but still some like getting "drunk" through by manufacturers feeding us new spec, new features, new this + that, faster this + that.... even though its not needed to shoot a great photo 99 times out of a 100.
