Honestly, your video about "Auto ISO" was a "brain explodes" moment for me. None of my previous cameras had it, but I just got a 5D mkiii and woah mama. What a great setting! You're absolutely right: ISO doesn't mean a̶n̶y̶t̶h̶i̶n̶g̶ nearly as much as it used to. As you said: "it's the ONE variable that I don't care about". Complete eye-opener. One technique I use (I do a lot of club photography) is to use a VERY small amount of flash, with a long shutter speed. It allows me to freeze my subjects' faces, but keeps the lens open to absorb the cool background club lighting. Sometimes I even simply use the "flashlight" app on my phone to highlight faces, and let the ambient club lighting do the rest!
Sensei Simon I would of guessed you have long eclipsed the 1 million captures !?! :: i operate the Sony rx 10 m 4 and the focus limiter and normally staying wide in focal points

Agreed. I’ve always wondered how the canon AF system works. This video perfectly explains every aspect of the system, glad that RUclips recommended it to me. ❤
10/10 thank you so much. As a self-taught concert photographer a lot of the settings on the 'big boy' cameras just go straight over my head, but videos like this really make me realise how insanely powerful the modern dslr can be. can't wait to try and implement all of this!
I’ve been looking for photography instruction like this for literal years. Extremely thorough presentation and helpful information. Really appreciate your videos!

Simon, I’m the tech guy who reads the entire manual and watches 30 minutes videos from FroKnowsPhoto to understand all the camera settings. Yet, the second half of the video was all new to me 🤯. Je suis flabbergasté!
It was great listening to you and you just say everything that everyone wants to hear. I was just "glued" to your video and you don't ramble on about any useless information at all. I shall be watching more of your material as your are just great! Thank you.
Shot a whole talking head video last night and in the edit realised I was slightly out of focus. Couldn’t work out why my camera wasn’t autofocusing. Trawled through a ton of vids and saved yours to watch this morning. First few minutes - problem solved! Servo! Thanks so much. Have subbed!
Great tutorial! No fluff as advertised. For me, being Swedish, I especially can relate to Canadian conditions, be it outdoors, wildlife and ice hockey. Great!
Totally agree with Cynthia's comment. This is the first time I watched one of your videos, and I was extremely impressed. You did a better job of explaining Canon's autofocus settings and, more importantly, how and why to apply them, than any other RUclipsr I've seen. That includes those I highly regard, such as Canon's own Rudy Winston and Explorer of Light David Bergman. Thanks so much for the great video. I've subscribed to your channel and will be looking through your archive for more content to watch.

Finally, a thorough AND understandable explanation of the four Cases! I had never paid much attention to their importance before, having been a Canon user for only a few months.
Wow. Great video. I just bought a Canon R7 and was looking for a great tutorial on auto focusing. This was it! The length of the video was perfect. No joking around or trying to entertain. Pure information which I truly appreciate. Count me as a new subscriber.
Best step-by-step tutorial for auto-focus features of Canon R cameras I have seen. I actually got my EOS R, set it up on my tripod, and 'walked' thru this video - hitting 'pause' frequently so I could stop an familiarize myself with each setting...and finally know why I was doing it! I always knew what kind of results I wanted with my auto-focusing for different situations, but frankly didn't know how! The settings available for the EOS R are a wee bit different than the R5, but its close enough that I was able to apply the lessons of this video to my own camera with ease. Thanks, Simon! All your videos are 'Master Class' quality!
I am a new owner of a Canon R5 MK II as well as a Canon R6 MK II. After many years of using a Canon 5D MK II and a Canon 59D (APS-C) I noticed that the auto focus is jumpier than it was on my previous models. I am going to adjust my settings on both bodies to have the cameras set to meet my personal needs. In the future, I am planning on shooting a total solar eclipse in Sydney. I will be using the :R5 MK II and R6 MK II for this project.
Simon - a bit of a random comment but I've been binging on your videos and kudos for how you've improved. The first videos I watched were some of your most recent ones and I wondered if you were also a public speaker. As I've seen some of your older ones, none of them bad, but you seemed a little bit more wooden in your delivery. You clearly have worked on your delivery and have gotten especially good!
Having recently studied my autofocus settings on my Panasonic to hopefully get the best settings for bird photography, I found this very useful and could easily identify similar settings on my camera to the Canon system.
Thank you. Your videos have quickly become my favorites! Excellent presentation and delivery. It is wonderful to know that technically (and artistically) proficient photographers do exist and love sharing their knowledge, tricks, experience and tips. Merci!
The delivery of explaining Tracking Sensitivity is a master class and thank you, I recently played around with these settings and completely messed it up cause I didn't know what I was doing. But now I am back on track after watching this video, thanks again and I've clicked the subscribed button.
I very often find myself coming back to your older videos to sharpen and train my skills with my Canon RP. Thank you SO MUCH for everything that you do.
thanks for the video, great help! An additional suggestion: I reconfigured the depth of field Button to change between ai servo and one shot autofocus on my R6.
Well this is the third video of yours that I’ve watched and the third time I’m leaving a comment. Your videos are pure gold and the best part is I’m not even a wildlife photographer I’m a landscape and portrait/corporate photographer but I’m learning a ton about motion and tracking amongst other things. Hi Simon. Just wanted to say I love your videos. You've just received a new subscriber. Your videos are ridiculously informative, and I feel like I learn more about photography watching them now than I ever have in my whole time learning this hobby. Thank you for the detailed scoop especially about the four cases. I mainly shoot birds of prey with the R5 using my 400mm f4 prime and 800mm 5.6 prime lenses … primarily nesting bald eagles in my area. Case 2 going left (minus) is a game changer especially when the eagles are delivering sticks or prey to the nest. I am so appreciative of your educational topics. Judy
This is incredibly helpful! I'm mostly using my Canon SL3 to video my painting process and I think I just learned how to stop it from jumping to focus solely on my hands.
thank you for the great explanation of different cases! I have applied these to c1-c3 on my R5. One for portrait, one for slow moving animals, and ones for birds in flight.
Great description of the different options, how they work and when to use which focus option. What made this the best video I have seen on this subject was your use of examples that were so easy to relate to.
I spent a couple days in a camp ground nearby with my R5 and 100-500 lens. I had questions in the field that I new would get answered once I reviewed your video library. Thank you, R5 is my first mirrorless camera with an array of RF glass to go with it. Your vid was perfect in its explanation, and will help me convey that to my partner who has an R7....
Great stuff Simon. That's easily the best explanation of the 4 Cases on Canon cameras I've heard. Canon themselves referred me to their own explanation, when I queried the AF performance on my R6/RF800 combo BUT it isn't anywhere near the clarity and understnadability of this. Incidentally I found your site via Gavin (I love a Twist, and won't share) Hardcastle, and it's been a real pleasure to watch your vlogs since then.
Very informative video. I upgraded from a 7D mk1 to an R6 earlier this year, and hadn’t been getting the results I was expecting. Hopefully this will start me going in the right direction.
Simon, This was the best presentation I’ve seen for the different auto tracking options for the R5. Your presentation skills are the best. So easy to follow! Thank you for taking time to share your talent with us. I understand the concept much better now. I have a question to follow up. I use back button focus. I’ve got two buttons on my R5 set up for focus. One is set to center in my view finder with 9 focus points. The other button is set up for eye detection. I’ve recently started using my R5 to take high school football pictures of my grandson. I can’t get the auto tracking to track the players that is dependable. So I’m shooting from the center 9 focus points and using the joy stick to move the center focus points around before I start to shoot each picture. I’m getting really good pictures. I feel shooting this way I’m not utilizing the full camera focus tools of the R5 shooting this way. Would you mind elaborating on how to utilize the auto tracking modes. This would be a great follow up on this tutorial. Thank you again for sharing your professional talents. Ricky
I own a M50 II with a Sigma 30mm F1.4 and a Canon 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 lens which works perfectly fine for my needs. But realized that the M50 doesnt have many detailed focusing options. Thanks for the vid!!

Thank you, R5 is my first mirrorless camera with an array of RF glass to go with it. Your vid was perfect in its explanation, and will help me convey that to my partner who has an R7....
Glad it helped!
hi sir simon im from philippines i learn a lot in your videos, my canon 80d was doing well in may photography hobby, thank you very much, god bless you
Great stuff Simon.
Great Thanks. more chocolate…
Very informative video. I upgraded from a 7D mk1 to an R6 earlier this year, and hadn’t been getting the results I was expecting. Hopefully this will start me going in the right direction.
Great to hear!
Ricky

Such a great tutorial - especially the case overview. Particularly relevant for me since I use the R5 for bird photography. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I own a M50 II with a Sigma 30mm F1.4 and a Canon 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 lens which works perfectly fine for my needs. But realized that the M50 doesnt have many detailed focusing options. Thanks for the vid!!
I am a lumix user. But your video still help me to understand its various AF systems. Thanks a ton.
Very pleased to have found this video! Answer most of the questions I had about the AF on my new R5.
