When it comes to purchasing a Full Frame Canon DSLR you are left with a select few options plus one cropped sensor camera. Canon's current lineup of Full Frame cameras can be considered to be on the old side. The 1D X, 5D Mark III and 6D all are at the end of their life cycle and should be replaced as we move into 2015.
So you are deciding on picking up a new full frame camera where should you start, what questions should you be asking?
Is this your first full frame camera or are you upgrading from a current fx camera?
What is your budget?
Do you already have quality glass?
What will you be shooting?
Are you a hobbyist or a professional?
Are you interested in stills, video or both?
The big question always becomes if you are looking for a Canon Full Frame what should you buy? Should you venture out of full frame into the NEW Canon 7D Mark II or wait for the next generation replacements?

I have a 5D Mark II and I still love it. It may not have all the bells and whistles as the higher end cameras but it is a solid camera and does the job.
Agree on that. If I would have to buy one today it would be the 5D Mark II.
Picked up a 5D MK III in 2023 from a pro camera shop for $350 bucks US. I wanted a full frame to go with my 90D.
I am greedy, got the 1dx and the 5d mkiii and both I use for wedding photography and I love them both, with out doubt the best cameras i have ever had the pleasure to have owned.
That burst on 1Dx is pretty dope😍
I shoot 2x 5d3s and man they're a relief to have them around when shooting pretty much anything: wedding, low-lighted events, portraits, what have you. well done canon!
Get rid of that damn traffic light.
Why
@@franzliszt8090 because everyone hates them
I like it
As a professional photographer and avid reader on all the models, I truly believe you got right to the point on all the camera's and really offered your viewers an unbiased video. Good job sir... Cheers
Make a new one of theses for 2019
1 D series rock. User friendly and a true workhorse.
The guy is telling you that you need skill to shoot only one photo...
Yeah... do you smell it?
Yes, probably you do. You can take one photo on non burst mode.
Surely we need a new one of these with all the Canon full frame lineup!
I have a third party grip on my 60D. I can't remember what brand it is, if it has a brand, and I've had zero problems with it whatsoever. Never a disconnect issue, never a battery issue. One time I bumped the operation switch into the off position and didn't know why it wouldn't work for several seconds, but that's it. It holds either two LP-E6 batteries or 6 AA batteries.
Jared, if you want to try out a third party grip, go ahead. Test it when making your photography videos for here rather than something critical like a concert or wedding, so that if it should have any failures it's not going to matter. And if it passes with flying colors, you have a nice grip for about $30 or so. There are a lot of inexpensive aftermarket photography accessories that are really quite good and are worth checking out.
Great review, I really enjoy your videos. My 5D Mark III arrives tomorrow, along with the Vello 3rd party grip. I purchased the Vello grip for my 70D about a year ago and 10,000 shots later, not one single issue, but I'm only an enthusiast. :)
Thanks Jared. I have used a third party battery grip for years and never once had a problem. Just saying. Thanks for all your great and fun work on photography I have learned a lot watching you.
Quick correction Sony a77ii has a 12fps and a 1.5 crop. Current cost 1500 with a 16-50 2.8 lens. All weather sealed as well.
I would love too have the 1DX. That is next on my list. Running the 5 D mk 3 with grip
Im getting a 1DX in 2015. So excited.
Nikon owner here, but first and foremost a gadget geek. I could never get my head around Canon's mid-level line-up. The models with 3 and 4 digits are the lower-end and the 1D was the top dog, obviously, but when it came to the 5,6 and 7 it was confusing - I could never get my head around that there was a mix of crop and full-frame in those numbers. This video finally explained it. The 7D was just given a completely illogical name (IMO), but now I finally get it at least :)
Can you do a 2020 update
going with the 6d for sure.
Well.. To be honest... I have a 6D myself and if you get used to your camera and know how to work it, it'll do just fine for concerts! I did a shoot of Janelle Monáe with the 6D, and the pictures came out amazing!
Love the 5D mark 3 since I bought it last year in the summer, it's very good for taking photos of almost anything except for quick sports shots. I love and have used 3rd party grips from one company called MEIKE in china. They're much cheaper than Canon branded grips and they're pretty much the same grip. I used it for my Canon 60D, Canon 5Dmark2 and for my Canon5Dmark3, so i've been using their grips for more than 3 years now with no issues. It's the batteries that you put inside that you have to worry about, the grips are rock solid from that company which you can find and buy on Amazon.
I have used 3rd party grips for dlsr's. 3 of 5 grips was bad. Now I am using only Nikon stuff, it's just worth it.
I bought a used, 3rd party battery grip for my 5D II, because i use it very rarely. But when i do portraits i like the possibility to shoot vertically. I paid 10€ and i can't see a big difference to an original grip to be honest.
Rick Scott Well, maybe used is safer to buy, at least it is tested. :))
One 3rd party grip for Pentax dslr, was wrong voltage, so camera worked super fast, I got lucky - camera didnt got damaged.
Photix grip for D700, after while (2 months) started to show "err", at first I thought my shutter resource ended. And another 3rd party grip also for D700, randomly turned off camera saying you battery is empty.
What about the 1D C?
I was a loyal canon user for 6 years starting with the 5d mark i, then the 5d mark ii, 7d, and 5d mark iii. Plain and simple... If your a videographer nothing beats the Sony a7s for filming at this point in time. Made the switch and don't plan on leaving them any time soon. The whole canon lineup is obsolete in comparison. that's my personal opinion and i stick by it.
So you're saying canon's "still photo" cameras are obsolete because of the video? LMFAO.....do you buy a video camera for stills?
Wait...when was the A7s better for video than the 5D Mk. III?
Timothy Weaver
Since this past summer when it was released? 4K video output and ISO409600, adapters to use almost any lens ever made, including the Canon L lineup. The thing can shoot in Moonlight dude...
Maxwell Starr That's great then, because you can still use your 5D mark i or ii or iii and your Sony and use the same lenses, run two cams on one shoot and also buy the 5D mark iv when it comes out to add to your collection.
I agree with you. I rather pick the Sony A7S or Panny GH4 for video shooting. Canon's ain't that sharp/crisp.
Thanks for the review Jared, just what I needed to know. Happy Holidays!
Totally agree with the battery grip thing. I always buy Canon grips. Or whoever happens to make the camera itself.
I have owned the 6D for a year now and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Although the outer focus points aren't cross type, I rarely have any issues with them. I mostly shoot landscapes and never do sports or anything moving at a fast pace so fps doesn't really matter to me
I think what they did with these cameras is make specializasions for 7d:sports 6d:low light 5d: megapixels.. the 1d does all of these things in one but it's like buying all of them.
Thank you, It's not often reviews will talk about target audience and applications and the pros and cons behind it.
I looked at your videos when it came to purchasing an entry level camera, and so I went for the Nikon D3200 after your amazing overview, now I'm back because I would love to upgrade to a more expensive Canon! Thanks for these great videos, even though you posted this 2014/15 haha!
The 5D mark III is being upgrade to a 5D Mark IV in early 2015 as well as the 1DX will be upgrade to the 1DX Mark II
Can't believe it's 5 years later and these are still the cameras I'm looking at getting.. so do you think the mark iv 5d filled the role of combo camera you were talking about?
I have the 5d Mk III and the 1d x Mk I, imo the 1dx makes better photos but I prefer the 5d more for the camera handling (less heavy) and the pictures are also great.
@@FlowzenKing do they both have a similar color science?
yeah i know the 5D M3 is one of the most famous camera. I wonder if I should get the Nikon D810. They are almost the same price
jared. should do an updated one of these for the recent line ups. both nikon and canon. love your videos.
7D mk 2 isnt full frame but still damn good
Ever since Jared talked about his eye problem.. I can't help but to keep staring at this eys and their flickering.
7d mark2 speed with a full frame sensor...comes 4d or 3d...would make more sense, closer to a 1d lineup...loved my 5d mark2 and 7d mark 2 (a very gud combo)...big coverage for most every aspect of photography....Thanx for the video mr.
Bought 6D two weeks ago. It's most affordable full frame DSLR with light weight and small size. I don't need high fps to shoot like a machine gun, as it will shorten the shutter lifespan. I want to shoot like a marksman and don't shoot blindly hoping to get a good shot with 10 over fps. I rather shoot with video (30fps) rather than 10 over frame per sec.
I got the 6D as well and couldn't care about it's replacement. For what it is now, it's waaaay more than capable for what i shoot. Same 5D image quality for much less price, as quality is my main objective i could not care less about it's slow fps or 11 focus points. I still stand by my purchase and believe i did the right thing. I have noticed that people often get hung up on newer versions as if the older ones are now crap. Just coz the new one is slightly better doesn't mean the old one is garbage :) hope you will enjoy yours as much as i enjoy mine. Btw what lens did you pair it with?? I got the 24-70 2.8 tamron !!
samer younis Yes! Digital camera always got new model/design every few month, It's more important to upgrade our photography skill instead of keep on buying new camera. You can buy the latest brand new camera but after 2yrs will be replace by other 'new camera' . I'm using 24-70mm f4L len for special/important shooting and 40mm f2.8 pancake len for daily use. I used tamron before but have to send for repair after 6 months. My niece also having focus problem with her tamron lens.
It doesnt have a joystic so if you dont need a joystic to set a focus point in real tim you dont need any DSLR and can do your job with a toycamera so your argument is invalid. Or you just take photos of landscapes with no moving parts so its worse xD
I've owned the 5D, 50D, 70D, and now the 7DMKII and 5DMKIII. I agree the 5DMKIII is one of the better cameras made. I like many am struggling with too many out of focus shots with my 7DMKII. Something is not right. I have seen some great shots in my camera club from the 6D, the images just have a certain something that is hard to describe. All that being said the new Nikon D750 may be the best camera for the money right now. I think it blows the doors off of the 6D for sure and is better than the 5DMKIII for stills.
May 2017 I'm waiting for the 7d mark 3
August 2019.. still waiting.
2017...I think the 80D is the better plus 1 and will be for a while.
This camera was a gift about 4 years ago, and justu.faith/CanonCamera?司 I still love it! This camera is inexpensive for a digital SLR, and it wonderful for a novice photographer or as a back up camera for a more experienced photographer. The lenses are interchangeable between this and the other Canon SLR cameras, giving it incredible range and versatility.
7DmkII against 6D for sure 7D. doesnt matter if its not ff.6D one cross point will make a lots life harder on moving subjects, wildlife, street etc. cheap ff is not always a plus if you cannot afford a more expensive body.
7D and 6D are definitely a completely different userbase, which Jared really doesnt even talk about.
1 year already passed and no replacement of canon 6d, 1dx or 5d mark iii
+Luis Miguel Well the New 1dx just got released.(:
+Luis Miguel Does the 5DS count? Or is that considered another product line?
+NJ Sivee Not really.
+Luis Miguel 5d mark iv is scheduled to come out sometime late summer or early fall this year.
Well now there is a 1DXMKII and a 5DMKIV
Fro, can you do one like this for Canon and Nikon glass? This type of video is very informative and fills in a lot of blanks left by the respective companies websites.
Great lighting on the video Fro, what you using pal?
One of your best reviews pal. Thanxs.
the 5d mkiv and the 6d mkii hopefully should be coming out in 2015. im so afraid to upgrade because i know something new is coming out within the next year
I bought a 6D last year (upgraded from an original 5D) and I love it. I don't shoot sports or really any fast-moving things, so it's a good camera for me.
Although... that Sony A7 II with 5-axis in body stabilization is looking pretty nice. They make canon to sony adapters that retain autofocus. It's a little slow, but so is the 6D... so I might switch over to that in the next year or two (after testing it out of course)
Nice review and comparison. I shoot a 6d - my stuff is mostly studio and walking around, so the 5DIII would be overkill. Also, you did not mention the Wi-Fi on the 6d. I use that all the time to get JPGs off the camera when I am on location, and also to use my phone as a full function remote.
what is this Jpeg you are talking about?
There is value in the DSLR JPGs when on location. You can give out previews, build excitement, and get opinions. Phone JPGs can be nice but they look like pone JPGs in the end.
I bought the 6D as an upgrade from my original 7D for about $1250 new. Do you think that's a good investment? Considering this is my first full frame camera--I shoot many portraits, landscapes, and concerts.
The Samsung NX 1 shoots 15 frames per second and it's a crop sensor camera. Yes, it's not a DSLR, but it's still has an APS-C-sized sensor.
you just answered your own comment. of course it can do more frames without an actual mirror inside. my phone also takes more than 14frames/sec
Lasse Lindström Jared Polin claimed [in this video] the 7D Mk. II is the fastest shooting crop sensor camera and this claim is what I answered to.
7dmkii is so underrated. The black and white JPEGs beat my Leica SL2
I could only afford a 80D since I had to get lenses and alot of accessoires too
I only use it for hobby reasons and I am new to DSLR cameras... so I'm not unhappy with my choice
Could you add the links of the linked videos in the description? On mobile you can't click those annotations.
best low light cam?
I liked when he talked about the cinema people, which one wins in relation to that context?
If the Canon 5DM3 gets replaced soon, then wait for a battery grip, they drop by sometimes under half the price of what they go for now.
I just bought two used cameras for $700 :D. Canon 6D (20K SC) and Canon 5D Mark III (100K SC). Well quite cheap for two!
Jared, this video is fantastic! By far the best advice given on this subject!! Thank you so much.
Only on the Nikon site I witnessed major fall outs with third party grips. Due to the construction that doesn't goes into the compartment of the battery. The grip can bend, disconnect and cause the camera to malfunction.
This was a good video... I Appereciate your honest opinion Jared Polin
I guess the 11 and 60 fps crop cameras that came out before the 7dii aren't out there?
Waiting for the new version of the 5D so I bought a 300mm 2.8L instead. Time to save up again!
It's almost 2017 still no update on 6D wtf canon ?!!
I have been looking into the Canon 6D for a year. I primarily shoot Landscape and I currently am using a Canon 600D/T3i. It is my first DSLR and have been shooting for 2 years. The draw back is the high ISO performance is horrible. I like the 6D's high ISO performance when you can still keep shots at 8000 ISO. I want the 6D but I feel like I should just wait a little longer to see if Canon decides to do something new for an entry level Full Frame.
At this point you're best off waiting I think. While the 6D is still and will remain a great camera for some time, if you can get something better for the same or very little difference it'll be worth the wait.
Thanks m8
7D-7D Mark II (2009 - 2014) 5- years
5D mark II - 5D mark III ( 2008 - 2012) 4-years
6D- (November 12, 2012 -- 2016,2017)
If you are waiting for a 6D update expect a 4-5 year wait...
There were some huge deals on blackfriday and cybermonday on the Canon 6D; the canon 6D body with additional items like Canon Pro Pixma 10, Extra canon battery, 50 13X17 photo paper, 1-year warranty from instore replacement, and sold by canon authorized dealers (Adorama+B&H) for $1899 ($650 Rebate [American Express Card] included) == $1249 total.)))
Like the brand grips can't fail...
If you're buying one of these cameras or others in their price/performance range, getting a legit first party grip is just common sense, just like it's common sense to buy a good quality camera bag to put it in too. If you're using an entry level set up then you can get away with a third party, but if you're spending big money already then it's just false economy to go with such a grip.
Thinking of buying one of these
love your videos ☺ wouldn't trade my 6d or my 60d for the world 📷
totally agreed with third party Grips as it has happen to me to have a shot of my live a very rare bird came and sit in front of me i carefully take my 7d to get a shot of this rare bird in Iceland and nothing happened just got a error message on the lcd and when i fix it the bird was gone long time before i could get a shot after fix the problem :(
Why have you never made a 5D Mark lll review? :/
Josef Cross Because there's not need to review that camera.
Jared Polin
Agreed. Reviewing a camera that is pretty much ready to be upgraded anyway seems pointless to me. I honestly see this video as your 5D III review! You are a professional and you like it. That's all I need to know.
Mathias Jared Polin OK, what to do, get the Nikon D810 or the 5D Mark lll or wait for the 5D Mark IV?I want to shoot portrait and eventually Weddings...
Josef Cross The D810 is nice because of the resolution. That is very handy for portraits!
Other than that, go to a camera store and ask them to give you both cameras to play around with. Then based on that buy the camera that you personally liked better. I can list as many advantages and disadvantages as I want, but YOU are the one who is gonna use it later.
Josef Cross You know switching brands means you would also have to buy all new lenses and get used to a whole new menu and button system which is do-able but if you are already used to the Canon style it would disrupt your workflow for a while. Unless you've never used either but since you are looking at some of the top pro DSLR's on the market I'm assuming you already have lots of experience shooting? Switching over is not something to take lightly just because of a few specs that one tested better ISO than the other or something like that because eventually Canon will upgrade to stay competitive with Nikon and vice verses, Canon and Nikon will always be competing against eachother, which helps to make photography equipment progress. But Mathias is right, the best thing you can do is try out both and see which one you are more comfortable with, they both have great lens line ups, but once you get your 24-70 and your 70-200 and some primes and your wide angle it becomes really expensive to switch over and have to buy all new lenses again.
canon 800D,70D,6D
what camera & lances I should buy for wedding (I am a beginner )
So which is the best?
Hi Jared It's now Feb 2016 a new 1D has just been released but still no update of the 6D. I am tired of waiting so I am going to buy the 5D instead. I wanted to move from a crop 60D to a full frame and I thought a 6D would make the transition easier. I might not be ready to exploit all the features of a 5D now but they will be there when I am.
Having used 3rd party grip for my 600D (as well as cheap PC cables), it's not worth the cheaper price to skimp out for cheap 3rd party alternatives due to the lack of reliability.
Gunna start saving up for a full frame now:D
any chance of a 2019 update?
Great video, but definitely would have liked some high ISO comparisons as that's one of the most important factors for me.
I'd still go to the 3rd party grip :D
honestly in 4 years using a 3rd party grip it never failed once :3
I was just about to go out and buy a 6D next month. Hmmmnn
damn u missed some awesome deals on the 6D over blackfriday/cybermondy (6D [body], Canon Pixma Pro 10, (extra) canon LPE6 battery, camera bag, and photo paper = $1899 - $650 *canon rebates * B&H and Adorama [both authorized canon dealers] was offering the bundle and they sold out 3x after every restocking.
Love my 6D👍
933500003
That 1D x is the God Body Camera. Jeez. And to add on about the third body grip.... Mine works GREAT! Never had and issue and its been over a year.
The best combo with that body is the 70-200 2.8 IS MkII. It just looks beastly (and is lol). But then any body with a grip and that lens on looks like a beast. Even my 70D with the grip on with said lens looks like a monster haha.
Hey Jared. Love your videos. Very informational and overall great subjects. But you mentioned the 3 full frame cameras as the only ones Canon has but what about the 1DC? Specs seem better in every category to 1DX except price. Maybe a FroKnows review and comparison.
7d 2 isnt full frame but crop is better for sports and it's fast. That's also good for sports..
Thank You for the review, awesome hair style bro.
If you can live with the crappy AF and the lack of a propper joystick, the 6D wins in high iso, center focus, reduced size/weight and its almost silent. Really the best camera for receptions an churches ive used to this day. A true workhorse.
Who would balance between 6D and 1DX? Huge price gap...
Jared Polin an online retailer has the 5d Mark III bundled with a Canon PIXMA Pro-100, photo paper, sd card, extra battery and case for $2,499.00. Canon is also offering a $350 rebate, bringing the cost down to $2,149.00. Do I pull the trigger or wait for the Mark IV update? I'm itchin' bro! You're the shit btw!
6D for me.
I will be waiting the 6D MK II so I can purchase the old one , if you review the history of canon price it look like the price of VW stocks in 2009 just rising
To me photography is all about image quality, hence I'll go for the 6D.
your reviews are very good
what about canon 5D mark II ????????? i want to buy it , please say something about it
pls make another comparison vid for the newer cameras
I have a canon 70D, and would also like a full-frame... What should I get??
My favorite camera would definitely be the Canon 7D Mark II combined with a Canon 6D! 10 fps rapid fire, 65 focus points, high ISO and some full-frame goodness. :)
So what you're saying is you want a 1dx? xD
Thanks
Please keep us in the loop on the new editions when they release them. Loved this review! Thank you xox.
it is very use full but it will be great if you made a video cannon line up for enrty level 😊
I'm definitely moving to canon with 5d. I have nikon. but my friends got canons with some colorful lenses . and I fell some boring. Nikon don't even make commercial
