Its insanely cool when you actually understand what musical ideas he is portraying. Its like being part of what you are doing at the moment and narrating yourself through complexity but still being grounded and not break in to bad habits that will break the musical flow and integrity
Every time I hear Jojo talk, he distroys the bad habits that i accumulate as a drummer. He reminds me the most important thing.. the musicality. We often get lost in tons of patterns without really get the true potential out of them. Sometimes we forget important musical concepts like timber, tension, DYNAMIC.
@@sharpisharp of course, those are the tools to comunicate, is like a language, you could know the same words than Other people, but still be unable to express yourself as them.. there most be something missing that is not the technique
@@sharpisharp Yes, but the patterns have to serve the music. I'm a guitar/bass player and it's the same with scales. You can practice all the scales and modes in the universe, but if you can't make music with them, you're useless as a musician.
Good god, that kit sounds beautiful. Kudos to the sound engineers, too; I've complained about the sound quality of some of the PASIC videos, but this one sounds great. A great lesson on orchestration/voicing, musicality and creativity. I love it when drummers with amazing technical skills put all of it aside and teach folks about different ways to *think* about playing...
Thanks for posting....so much more in rudiments/patterns to "meditate on" .....the concept of accents in different places isn't new but how often is it focused upon on a daily practice. Thanks Jojo!
The combination of trained hands with sticks, 1,000's of hours with his kit and his drums are HOT in the mics here. Brother is total BOSS and we are lucky to have him with us and be blessed by this man's dedication and passion.
Jojo expands my mind every time I see him. His playing and thought process are on another level and he’s able to open up areas that I’d never even considered exploring before. Fantastic !
Those drums are SOOOO pretty! I'll never forget playing for hours with my buddy paul, who is also a drummer, when we came across Jojo Mayer (through videos)...Great memories and HOURS of practicing came about!
i think this was a demonstration of delving deeper into the mindset and hearing aspects rather than focusing on the technicalities of a simple triplet pattern
Oh my God, I watched 16:05-16:15 like 20 times. I chuckled along at the first example he gave, and then he also poked fun of using it in that quick fill context and realized that I was guilty of it too. Jojo is so many leagues ahead of me that just when I think I've done good, he makes fun of the concepts I'm proud I can do lol. He's so good. Love him.
There clearly is a philosophical side to playing a instrument. Jojo just wanted you to realize that and express yourself thru whatever pattern feels good to you. That's all, he's trying to do you a favor.
Many-a-time that I've heard SONOR's, they sound AMAZING. But the audio feed from the snare does NOT do it any justice; SONOR snares have an incredible smack/crack!!!
incredible. when he says he does the same pattern just over the bar line, he really does, even down to the stick hitting the rim (seemingly accidentally) when doing the triplets.
A paradiddle is a fish... I’m playing the aquarium by a stream, a stream of consciousness in communication with the mass off the molecular divisions of the ether - and now a pizza - extra cheese.
Magistral!.. Net, carré, fluide, précis, subtile, une superbe philosophie de la pratique de cet instrument...En somme, une belle personne!..je l'écouterais des heures et des heures.
Thank you jojo, i know you never teached one, but in times like Internet, yes People, free philosophic powerfull lesson for every maniac on Shells..listen good and enjoy..grussauszürich!
Many of you may not share my thoughts about " The Master" Jojo but I honestly believe that we ate saturated of techniques without concept, I meant, we execute exercises and we eventually add them in our compositions but I still feel that the concept of those moves is missing. I saw Jojo back in the 2012 and he was amazing but now when I listen Nerve and I listen what he does I realize that everything he plays is based on a concept, you find a concept in literature, you find concept in high quality movies and of course in special music, Jojo ladies and gentlemen has taken drumming into other perspective and level, I hope we can continue counting with his wisdom for long time.
There was a piece I played on toms in college that utilizes this approach of accenting in a pattern bring up other patterns, sort of like phasing on marimba. The secret " way more complicated than it actually is" , is the key.
Extremely good topic. I’ve seen Mark Guliana talk about similar topics, how do take a basic concept and stretch it out to its full size. I just tried the paradiddles now, not as RLRRLRLL, but as, where I was sitting: armchair-knee-table-table-cup-armchair-knee-knee. Sounded way cooler than RLRRLRLL on a practise pad. :-)
Wonderful and enlightening video. If when you begin, it begins to get a bit out there, I suggest you stick with it because JoJo brings it all together in typical JoJo style leaving no loose ends. Worthwhile watch for the cymbal minded of any age.
dnb beat, its a level up when playing drums, took me a few years to get to this point, after a few schools, playing this faster is the pinnacle of having this down
Great Artist with talent of teacher, incredible musician even i am as guitarist learn so many fundamental things that a lot of guitarist is missing at all and first at all ability to hear music. Be creative, music not a sport as many beginners treat it
I come back to this every few years to remind myself of the important things.
Wow. Mind Blown!!! Learned more in seventeen minutes than a year of private intermediate lessons.
Its insanely cool when you actually understand what musical ideas he is portraying. Its like being part of what you are doing at the moment and narrating yourself through complexity but still being grounded and not break in to bad habits that will break the musical flow and integrity
always gotta go "um...ok.. so you see...so..." right after a grove so it's award to applaud... b
appreciate the clap jojo!

well, yes, but still he dominates all the patterns and techniques. So, it is missunderstood if seen as an excuse, not to master all that stuff.
@@sharpisharp of course, those are the tools to comunicate, is like a language, you could know the same words than Other people, but still be unable to express yourself as them.. there most be something missing that is not the technique

Jojo's last comments are some of the most brilliant I've heard from any clinician. Incredible!
jojo mayer did so much for the drummer community, he´s miles ahead of every other drummer.
"The paradiddle, to me, has always been a melody, not a rudiment." Hearing this statement out of Jojo should be an epiphany for any drummer.
A palindrome on the drums.
shit, i feel the same o_O
Maybe it's both a rudiment and melody? Shit... I'm a genius! Lol
@@davidolson558 LOL!
@@bergerdrum lol. I never take anything seriously.
"Milk every pattern for its potential and, because you've meditated in the zone with it so much, it will sound like You". Sage
indeed, he gives this advice and lesson at the very end of the video for those reading.
This is an absolute art form for him.. and it’s beautiful.
Wax on wax off
This is one of the most important things I've ever heard about music in general, and maybe even about life. What a man.
JoJo is SUCH a gift to drumming! Outside the box - totally original - and here he explains himself (as we see why he's unique)
He's so musical with such a simple pattern.. Amazing
So much material to be inspired by and learn from in this short extract alone. So lucky to have this information at the end of our fingertips.
A very milestone on independence 🙌
this snare tone. from heaven...
Jo jo is sooooooo smart. Love your processing style and brake down
Breakdown.
Tim C true. I suck at remembering stuff like that. Good to be reminded of to fix it. Thx
This is gold
Jedi master of uncommon ability! Perfect the craft and make music

This is how you achieve mastery!
and a beautiful kit too!
just FRL...nice...Thank you again Jojo
Thanks for posting....so much more in rudiments/patterns to "meditate on" .....the concept of accents in different places isn't new but how often is it focused upon on a daily practice. Thanks Jojo!
at :49 Jojo says "I think everyone in here knows what I'm talking about"
Some guy in the crowd goes "no"
lol
A wiseguy, eh?!
LOL! Now thats some funny stuff right there! Out of the entire auditorium you hear one "No!" BAHAHAHA!
The whole crowd cocks their heads to the direction too lol
Well not the whole crowd but some
Where’s the timestamp
You Jo Jo - You just made my dishwashing a delightful and educational experience. Thank You!
I watched this for the third time, but it’s the first time I’ve understood. Wow. ❤
Such a fascinating thinker and player. He really expands your mind with his approach to his instrument.
The combination of trained hands with sticks, 1,000's of hours with his kit and his drums are HOT in the mics here.
Brother is total BOSS and we are lucky to have him with us and be blessed by this man's dedication and passion.
Wow! Really amazing accent! That leads to lot of dimensions of drumming! More power to u Jojo Mayer!
I think it's French.
What i mean is drum accents >
Jojo expands my mind every time I see him. His playing and thought process are on another level and he’s able to open up areas that I’d never even considered exploring before. Fantastic !
Those drums sound so good, the feel is incredible -- what a master. If you watch the video on mute, you can see the quality of his control.
Brilliant man, excellent insights. I feel my drumming IQ going up every time I watch him and 2x every time I hear him speak. 😂
Jojo Mayer = Breakbrain of drums. Awesome!!
He is such a good ambassador. We're lucky to have him.
He's a coated ambassador
Brent McFarlane Unfortunately he's neither, he is a Genera HD.
I saw him at the Mercury Lounge in NYC several years ago. Amazing drummer. I was standing right next to him by the front of the the stage!!!
Jojo is my favorite drummer and the reason why I fell in love with Drum N' Bass. He makes the drums sing so well!
Saw this live! His concert that night was amazing.
Those drums are SOOOO pretty!
I'll never forget playing for hours with my buddy paul, who is also a drummer, when we came across Jojo Mayer (through videos)...Great memories and HOURS of practicing came about!
I love that he is so insanely technical and all about the music.
i think this was a demonstration of delving deeper into the mindset and hearing aspects rather than focusing on the technicalities of a simple triplet pattern
Massive respect to JoJo
Jojo is a Jedi.
C'est claire!
That's why he is weak
Not just a jedi he's yoda
Chitin.
Darth Vader I wonder what Darth Vader's example of a great drummer is. If Jojo is Yoda then who is The Emperor, or Darth Vader? Probably Thomas Lang.
Thank you so much for that lesson. I now have a new way to meditate and practice. Jojo IS a Jedi!
Excellent lesson.
He's right about limitations, my particular limitations reveal that I can't play any of that.
What a symathic understatement...
L000000l
Basically we can’t get there Jojo
Man, I like ur sincerity!!!!Hhhhhhhh LOL!!!
Haha so true!!!..I love jojo..but ya...lol...#nocompition2jojo
GREAT lesson
his mind is so elevated
One of my Drum Idols !!!

^this hahahahah
Ok. This three (out of four) beat motif is the one I need to learn. Already kind of learned it. Thanks JoJo!
There clearly is a philosophical side to playing a instrument.

that bass drum sounds AWESOME
incredible mind space... love Jojo.
Brilliant lesson on how to apply real creativity
An absolute genius.
You can unlock the secrets of the universe with this simple lesson
Now that's how drums should sound. That bass is gorgeous.
Many-a-time that I've heard SONOR's, they sound AMAZING. But the audio feed from the snare does NOT do it any justice; SONOR snares have an incredible smack/crack!!!
It is in his playing, in his hands and in is his heart
Jojo is the best !!
yare yare
Jojo redefines how to play the snare yet again.
Linear drumming is like a different dimension... I haven't even started exploring it... So much to practice...
incredible. when he says he does the same pattern just over the bar line, he really does, even down to the stick hitting the rim (seemingly accidentally) when doing the triplets.
Very articulate and precise in his way of explaining/demonstrating...
Really great spot from Jojo. Always interesting

fascinating demo, the professor of the kit
Great Advice, Jojo!!
Jojo is the zen of drumming.

12:00 so sweet ! I heard two drummers! That’s cool
Very instructive!
Caution, genius at work
Inspiring as always
Best. Drummer. Ever.
Love his (main) snare sound!
Jo jo for me is the new Mitch Mitchell of drums! RIP Mitch “ Are you experienced!”
Super cool!
Pure gold!
