The longest-running show in Broadway history, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera debuted in 1988, winning seven Tony Awards® including Best Musical. Based on Gaston Leroux’s horror novel, it tells the enticing story of the Phantom, who haunts the stage of the Paris Opera and subsequently falls in love with a beautiful young soprano. Audiences are in for a thrilling night of spectacle and romance, accompanied by Broadway’s most unforgettable score.
“It’s over now… the music of the night” never hit harder

How could this decade possibly get any worse!!!
To me, it all started with September 11th, 2001. Since that fateful day, one thing kept leading to another and just kept escalating more and more with time.
This was my very first show from my very first trip to New York City; so this show means a lot to me. You can bet that I’m going to try to be there to see that glorious chandelier rise and fall one last time.
It's still going in London
It was my very first show from my first trip to New York City as well back in 2005
Erik standing on top of the Majestic Theatre like a superhero actually gave me chills/goosebumps. Please, _please_ release a proshot of the current Broadway cast, so the Brilliant Original can be immortalized!
It's still in London
@@Glittering_size Well technically yes..but there were some minor changes made for the London production. The Broadway is the "Brilliant Original" version without the changes made for the West End.
@@Glittering_size And in many other countries around the world in Cities + Tours!
@@finleyforevermore What are those changes?
When I heard about the news from my dad on this, I felt as if I want to cry. Phantom of the Opera has been an idol for me ever since I listened to the original soundtrack and now the Broadway Show of it is now closing in February. 😢😭
You're speaking of the one with Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford? That one is truly timeless.
@@jadaatkinson1201 Yeah.
@@VickyCrescent it was my first introduction to the musical Phantom of the Opera. Funny enough it was also the same year began flute in 6th grade. I got to play the Overture. When I say that it will give you chills just beyond listening to it. Wow!
@@jadaatkinson1201 Yeah. And it must’ve been pretty cool to see you play the Overture during the time.
@@VickyCrescent it was the beginning of a lifetime love affair. I didn't get to play it with that orchestra though (oh how I wish). I played it at a big university in my state for All-State. They may shut the doors on the show, but it will still live on.
No no no
Please don't let it end... This is my fav musical..
I know right
At least the national tour, West end and International productions will keep going on
@@marcoterres3421 not enough😥

Oh so it's only for broadway? I was depressed all day because I thought they are ending every show.
Who knows, maybe in some decades they might relaunch it) after all, it s so much a masterpiece to close it forever🥺
I think the one who decided to close the Broadway showing said he could see it being revived in 5 years or so.
Please tell me he really said that!! I'm a 17 year old student who live in south korea and I really was planning to visit NY when I
turn 19.😥 I was so depressed because I thought I will never see the live show. But if he really talked about the show starting again in 5 years... I am going to cry in happiness!!!!! So could you please tell me what interview you saw? Btw, sorry for my bad english.
@@miria5397 you can go to London her majesty’s theatre and see it still! That’s where the phantom first opened
yeah i guess
@@RavenStarMedia really?
WHY???????? I thought that show would last forever!
Like the guy who decided to close it said, no Broadway show lasts forever. 35 years is an exceptional run.
I know I’m not a big super fan like those of you who always loved the show but I started falling in love with the whole story and musical when I first started listening to the music and the movie from 2004 a few months ago, it definitely is an amazing musical! I live too far away to go to broadway but I hope you have fun if you’re able to go! It’s a beautiful musical and should be celebrated ❤️
yes i really want to go see it but i live 12 hours away put i still going to try
Colega e o que sobra pra mim que moro em outro país 😢😭
Meu mundo caiu quando soube dessa notícia...
Same here I live in down under!

I'm going to cry
I wish I could go see it for the first and last time
Sad loved phantom of the opera went from reading the novel to watching the movie and than the play and now it’s coming to end I always thought this was gonna last forever
This has been my favorite since childhood. This got me through so much. I will be traveling to see it i never got to see it on Broadway.
It will still be going on in London
@@Glittering_size And in other Cities around the world with Tours!
It’s obviously successful so leave it on broadway 🥺
There are no words to express the pain I feel right now.... 😭💔
I'm right there with you
@@GusHarley Thank you, let's cry together 😢😢
same
At 2 years old this show captivated me, it charted the course for my life, I am now a full time singer and performer, seeing this breaks me, with all of the power in me I am going to make sure I’m there…💔🙏
I'm so sad this show is closing, it means so much to me. It's always been there for me no matter what, and now it's leaving. I can't imagine a Broadway without the Phantom's mask over a light up sign that reads "Majestic." the closure is also horrible because it's my #1 I'd do anything in the world to do this dream to play Christine. Now I'm too young for the role and I'll never get to play Christine. I mean I wanna play her so bad that even just one night as Christine on Broadway would mean the world to me. Christine is the best character, with the prettiest costumes. (the Star Princess, Aminta's, every other one of her costumes.) I can't believe this is actually happening, Phantom is my home, my save place and I don't know what I'm going to do without it. I cried when i heard the news. That the show that i love so much and can't go without, will be gone in less than 6 months. When i first heard the Original London Cast Recording (Crawford, Brightman, Barton), it was 1:45 AM on a Tuesday night. I got bored so decided to look it up. The way I felt hearing that Overture for the first time in a pitch black room gave me chills. By the end of the recording, I was sobbing. O saw it on Broadway last month and it was amazing. Nothing like I'd ever seen before. I can't believe Phantom is leaving us and I still don't believe it. I don't want it to be true but I know it is. Phantom Of The Opera means so much to me and I am absolutely devastated to see it go. But hopefully in the future it comes back, and I'm old enough to play Christine, even for just one night on Broadway.
but why????????? WHY????????
This is my favorite musical. My heart hurts 💔
It hasn't financially recovered from reopening in the pandemic.
Erik walking throught the city and looking upon NY... it hits differently within the context. It's heartbreaking to know this musical is closing. But i'm glad we had 35 years of glory with Phantom of the Opera. We need a new adaptation to warm our hearts 😢💔
This is not okay. I actually cried watching this. Can’t believe Phantom Broadway is really closing... 💔
I remember being about 5 years old and begging my parents to let me watch phantom… which then sparked a 12 year long and counting love of musicals! For as much as I love Heathers and Dear Evan Hansen, Phantom started it all and I’m so sad to see it go… Bon Voyage, sweet Phantom… you live on in my memories… and my DVDs…
I just finished sobbing. Like no joke, hysterical sobbing… 💔
Like saying goodbye to an old friend 🖤 Thank you Andrew Lloyd Webber for everything.
Goodbye Eric and Christine 🖤
I'll miss you.
Why?!
Likely covid restrictions played a part.
@@Saint_nobody Part, but not the whole thing. Phantom is a very expensive show to run as it is, and tourism has gone down, plus the guy in charge said he felt 35 years was a good point to stop.
It was due to loss of funding since the pandemic
In the end it's like: "Follow me"... I was in love with The Phantom of The Opera years ago. Then I forgot about it, and then, out of nowhere, a few weeks ago the songs popped in my head. I went on youtube to search for the songs, to find out that the show will end soon! Coincidence?
They don't make spectacle shows like this anymore, that's for sure. The sets are just beautiful - I saw the show a second time just for those. Maybe now they will release the recording of the original stage show and make the rights available for theatre companies?
I hope they do release it
that's the saddest thing i ever seen :c
"It's over now the Music of the Night"..... 🥲🥲
That really sucks that a play like this is closing down. It deserves to last forever. 🌹
they'll probably bring it back in a few years. They do that a lot with popular broadway shows.
No way the last performance is on my Birthday- I gotta get tickets
Don't panic! Phantom will return to Broadway enhanced with a new production. :D
My heart broke into pieces when I've heard about this last week 😭
Thank you for everything! 🎭❤️

This brings tears to my eyes. I remembered going to see Phantom on Broadway for my 18th birthday and it was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. I’ve been a fan of this musical and it’s sad that this iconic musical is coming to a close. They had a great long run.
I can't believe it's going... 😭😭😭😭
I can’t believe this. I just can’t believe it. 😔😢😭. This has broken me.
Here's hoping for a final national tour for those of us that can't get to New York to see it one last time
I know what you mean
Like with Beetlejuice.
Still have my ticket stub from the summer of 2012 from my church choir tour to NYC. Was a privilege and honor to see this show in person.
Thank you for your amazing run POTO!
I don't want that it ends!
I know right
It's still going in London
@@Glittering_size not enough 😥
I watched the show last night at Majestic.... my first time seeing Phantom on stage (although been fan my whole life) - CAN'T BELIEVE THEY ARE CLOSING IT!!! 😭😰
PotO deserves TO RUN FOREVER!!!
Music of the Night will NEVER DIE!
I have never seen the play live, could you tell me where else I can see it in some other theater in the world???
That's damn tragic 💔 one of my few dreams left was to see it someday. NYC might as well be Mars for me anyway.
Same here 😢😢
Please don't go!!!
Oh, noooooooooo😭... the musical of my life... it's over now.... but it will still in my dreams, singing our strange duet... and waiting for a revival!!!
It has always been a dream of mine since I was little to be able to see Phantom of the Opera, my favourite musical/play and movie of all time, and now I am 20 years old and I've still never gotten the chance to go see it. My birthday is February 18th and when I found out 4 days ago that Broadway will no longer do Phantom of the Opera and it closes out on February 18th, 2023, I literally broke down
I went to see The Phantom Of The Opera in New York on my senior year from high school back in 2013, that's the most extraordinary experience I'll never forget. I wanna perform in the musical as The Phantom so much. I was an actor, singer, and dancer back in high school. I miss performing. I'd do anything to perform in the musical as my family and friends come see me perform as The Phantom. I wanna be an actor on Broadway so much.
Why is it ending???? I don’t understand… it’s ICONIC!!!!!
I'd like to see all the previous Phantoms and Christines for the encore perform for one last time, like what they did for the 25th anniversary. Ramin and Sierra are still my favorites, and likely will always be.
I hope Ben Crawford plays it at the last performance. It started with a Crawford and should end with a Crawford!
I believe that Michael Crawford will be there in the audience for the final performance.
Yea! Although it’s not the end completely as it’s still in London at her majesty’s theatre
@@leahfalzon92 but it is the end of its record-setting run on Broadway.

Cam Mac, you can't just take away my emotional support musical!
Hopefully this gets long touring runs every couple of years or so like Cats does. I can't imagine them not doing that. Shame the original staging's going to be gone forever, though. Non-replicas are fun, but the Hal Prince staging _is_ Phantom.
It’s over now the music of the night. Such a shame, Broadway won’t be the same.
dangit man, I'm not a fan of this musical and even I'm upset
The phantom of the opera was the very first broadway musical that I watched. I was 13 years old. It was my first trip to New York and I watched it on the last day. I still remember I cried on our way to hotel, not knowing it's because I didn't want to leave NY or got touched by the show, maybe both. I love the songs and those every single notes always bring me back to this one of the most beautiful moment in my life. This musical is so special. Thank you and I'll miss you so so much.
I'm so glad I was able to see the musical during summer! I'll miss the Phantom of The Opera
It's too hard to let go of what has become a part of your life..
Thank you for the Music of the Night🖤🌹
I second that
Why is it ending?
bc sales went down during and after covid
It's an expensive show that never fully recovered from Covid =[
@@mariasbuggy It's not just the sales and the fact that tourism has gone down. According to the man who runs the show on Broadway and was responsible for deciding to close it, it's that he feels 35 years is a good amount of time for a Broadway show to run, and every show goes off Broadway eventually.
Still in denial. Cannot believe this is happening. Love you Opera Ghost.
Ending off with a black christine LOL
I love Phantom of the Opera as far as I could remember, along with the story, music, characters, etc. But I haven't seen a show of it...yet and now it's coming to end next year.
Thank you, Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Thank you, Christine
Thank you Phantom/Erick
The music of the night might be ending...but the legacy will live on in people's hearts and minds.
Truly thank you...
No :(
The phantom of the opera... My favorite history forever ❤️
I was in my early 30's when this show opened. I just turned 65 and will see my last performance at the Majestic Theater in NYC on March 1st. The show expanded over my lifetime..always in the background - fueling my love for Broadway and musical theater. I saw Michael Crawford in the original - I have seen about 10 phantoms over the past 30 years - my favorite is James Barbour. His performance left me in tears.
Do not think of this as an ending - think of it as a new beginning for this show. Now local, independently run theaters around the world can make their own productions and come up with their own unique spins on this show. Personally I can't wait to see some playhouses near me do something new with Phantom. I'm excited.
We all know its coming back eventually
I’ve heard that it will come back eventually..
Maybe after like 5 or so years I’ve heard
I hate being poor I'll never be able to see this. I put it on my bucket list to save up for alas it's futile I'll never get the chance. I might actually cry
Thankyou Phantom, we love you. The Music of The Night will never end 🖤🌹
it not goring away not forever it will be back someday like it did with cats in 2016
YOU WILL CURSE THE DAY YOU DID NOT DO!!! Makes me so upset about the show having dealt with shameful low-ticket sales since reopening. PHANTOM is a landmark and national treasure to New York City. a moving masterpiece is ending. The full company will be out of a job once more especially those who have been with the show for 35 years and it breaks my heart for all those aspiring performers who auditioned many years to be part of this iconic show on the stage of the Majestic Theatre including myself. For me, sometimes I feel like that I failed as a performer.
I am truly heartbroken 😭 I have loved Phantom of The Opera for years and it has always held a special place in my heart and seeing it on Broadway live was a dream of mine
This is so unfair I have always wanted to watch the phantom of the opera but never got the chance and the fact this will be the final one upsets me its not happening in my country and I cannot aford to go to a different country to experience it :( I guess I'll never get to watch it
same here I only got into phantom abot a few weeks ago and Im soo disopointed Im 16 and I live in eastern europe thats about as close as I can get to watch this in live😂....
ok I'am sad😢.....but I mean it will at least hopefully or probably return after some time well or maybe Im just in denial...
ainda tenho apenas 14 anos ainda nem tive a oportunidade de assistir o musical ao vivo, virei uma fã do fantasma do ópera não acredito q acabou 💔 estou chorando "acabou agora, a música da noite"
while im happy the show is still going I feel like it should be illegal to say you are going to end a show just to boost ticket sales and then not end it.

Erik: Well everyone...*nods*...my work here is finished.
Truly, this masterpiece of the 80's is considered a legendary gem in Broadway history. It will always stay fresh in our memories as long as the music of the night continues taking flight (see the rhyme I did there?).
It's still going in London it's not as good with the chandelier crash but the rest is the same
Don’t leave.
My mom bought me tickets for the Phantom as my graduation/birthday present and we're seeing it this November (God-willing), I was in orchestra for 9 years and the Phantom of the Opera was one of our end of the year pieces that we performed and I fell in love with the music never having heard it before, so I hunkered down and watch every single piece of Phantom that I could get my hands on and I'll never go back, I love the Phantom of the Opera and I know for sure that I'm going to be bawling my eyes out at my first and only Broadway show, and then it truly will be over...the music of the night 🌙 ❤️ 🎶 ( I know that was corny but I'll forever be a phangirl)
its been a year and i still cant believe it got taken off broadway for like no reason :[
As a huge fan of The Phantom of the Opera growing up, that opening image of the phantom looking out at New York City at night with the music of night playing in the background as the last show theme will forever be iconic for me ❤️
Last night was my second time seeing the Phantom. The first time I had seen it was over 20 years ago & now I’m happy I was able to see it again - having bought tickets before knowing that this beloved musical is now ending it’s memorable run on Broadway.
Overwhelming and absolutely fabulous!!
You alone can make my song take flight... Its over now the music of the night!!!!!!!!
*Music of the Night plays*
Phantom live forever
Ever since I read this article about Phantom closing on Broadway, I was depressed. I am a foreigner, French to be precise. My sister and I planned that we would make a trip to NY in a few years and I begged her to go see a musical on Broadway.
Actually, I’ve been a phan for several years and it is a sort of guilty pleasure of mine. I’ve never talked about PoTO to anyone because I feared they would not understand or criticize it.
I started by reading Leroux’s novel when I was a teen. I tried to buy it discretely by saying I wanted "Le mystère de la chambre jaune" but couldn’t find it so I settled on this one. My mother and sister eyed me suspiciously then forgot about it. My mother once said that she had watched musicals and that my father hated one in particular : the Phantom of the Opera.
I’ve always been a fan of gothic novels, which most people I knew wouldn’t understand. And my family, especially, was quite strict under my father’s influence : showing emotions was showing weakness.
If you read, watched or liked emotional fiction like romance or drama, you would be mocked. If you liked manga, anime, animated movies you were an immature idiot. If you liked something that was out of the norm like horror or gothic, you were strange. If you were passionate about fiction, you were irrelevant. If you did any of these things, your opinion wasn’t worth being listened to.
And so I had a collection of books and movies hidden in my room back then.
When my sister said we could go to NY someday, I thought it the perfect opportunity to go watch the PoTO musical for the first time in my life and on Broadway ! And maybe then my sister would have been awed by the acting, the settings, the music. Maybe she would have said "It was beautiful, I see why you love it so much" or something like that.
However, now, the show is closing. Goodbye my dream. I don’t wanna go to NY anymore 😂 Imma go to London
Goodbye Phantom..
It's sad, but I know nothing lasts forever - even if I wish it could. I grew up with this musical after my parents saw it in Toronto. I've seen it in Columbus, Cleveland, and as of this summer, NYC with my wife for our anniversary. MOTN was the last piece to play at my father's funeral and this show is a huge part of why I became a music teacher. It hurts to hear this news, and of course I'd love to see it continue on forever, but I'm so thankful for the part this show has played in my life.
I wish they would show it on screen one last time again like they did in quarantine because my dream to see the show in the future when I could afford is gone :'(
THIS 👏 IS 👏 A 👏 MISTAKE 👏
Did Andrew Loyd Webber play the Phantom of the Opera in his last show because he sure starting to look like him!! MwwwaaBahahaHahahaha!!!
NOOOO!!!! DON'T GO!!! I NEED THIS IN MY LIFE!!!
I'm going to miss it terribly 😔💔. It's one of my favorite musicals. At least I got the movie 🎥🍿 and the stage version at the royal Albert Hall.
This saddens me in a way I didn't expect.. What a legacy. I saw Phantom in 1997 on Broadway, and now more than likely won't have a second chance.
The Phantom shall Return.
I’m gonna miss phantom of the opera 35 years on Broadway the run has been around for decades
🎶YOU ALONE CAN MAKE MY SONG TAKE FLIGHT! IT'S OVER NOW, THE MUSIC OF THE NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!🎶
I honestly never thought they’d end phantom. It stays so fresh for every new generation that sees it. Shame. It’ll be back though, the entertainment industry just can’t not do a reboot.
