    Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.
    The musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles, and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. Now in its 35th record-breaking year, The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, after more than 11,000 performances.

      Me too. I was so lonely when I was young. When 'the creature of darkness' looks at the music box with a monkey, the scene is highly relatable. This scene always kills me. Because it's here that we see that the phantom really IS a good person. He just... was never taught how to act in society. He was hidden down there as a child by Madam Giry, and that pretty much ended his contact with the mortal world. She was the only one who knew about him, and I highly doubt she taught him how to act in the mortal world. She seem like a very, "stay safe, don't stray farther than what you already have" kind of person. She'd keep him alive and pretty much keep him alive, but everything else, the Phantom had to learn himself. How to speak, sing, act, write, design, dress, all of that he had to teach himself by either failing and correcting, or watching others. The part of social interaction training literally is nonexistant. So, yeah, he's a bit rough around the edges, but at his core, I believe he is a good person, but he sometimes lets his passion get the better of him and directs the choices he makes instead of thinking logically.
    When his "passion storm" (so to speak) was calmed by Christine, his first reaction was joy, or victory, or anything of the sort. It was a burning, utter shame. Shame for the all the harm he had caused to others because of his own desires...
    MY HEART GOES TO YOU ERIK! YOU HAVE MY SYMPATHY!

      The book adds another layer of sadness to this: Erik, for a time, fled to Persia and became the secret assassin of the ruler there (hence why he favors using a special lasso to strangle his victims). He also learned about architecture and how to design secret passages in every part of the palace so he could always listen in on conversations and conveniently be right where he needed to be whenever someone needed to be killed off.
      Problem was he got to be so good at both of the above that the Persian king came to fear he'd be the perfect tool for a rival party to off him and seize the throne so he ordered Erik to be put to death (Erik only escaping thanks to the enigmatic entity known as the Persian). The one time Erik gets any sort of actual appreciation and respect for his talents it almost ends with his death, and that's after his being a circus freak and being shunned by his mother. No wonder the guy's got such warped morals and trust issues.

      Yeah... The thing is, I could really empathize with Erik when I was younger. I sometimes felt like someone should like me because things were difficult for me and I felt like no one understood. I realized, though, that we cannot confuse love with pity. I feel for him, really. His life is so, tragic. Like a child, he latched onto the first person who seemed to understand him, listen to him, and not see him as a monster. He became obsessed, only knowing darkness and shunning, but even I cannot excuse his actions. Manipulation, murder, kidnapping. It isn't excusable, but I would be lying if I said I did not feel sorry for him and the way his life turned out. At least in the end, for a moment, someone showed they cared, and his lustful, controlling, desperate love, in the end, became a sacrificial, selfless love. He let her go, even to the man who to him, took her away from him. He understood himself, that although he was able to live in a fantasy for the moment, she couldn't stay with him. He had truly gone past the point of no return, people were hunting him down, and she wouldn't be happy being locked up in his fantasy.
      Fortunately, years later, I found the love of my life, and her middle name actually is Christine. That's why I call her my angel. Heaven-sent, a girl who understands me and loves me for the man I am and the man I am trying to become. This love drives me to want to be a better person. It's amazing how much you can learn from literature and life among other things.

      Pretty much. He basically lived the life equivalent to that of an abused child. He was beaten by a man and labeled as “the devil’s child”. When Meg’s mother (back then a young girl) brought Erik to the the basement of the opera house he then lived alone in the dark. He had no decent human interaction with anyone for his entire life. He had music to confide in and that’s all. It’s no wonder the phantom had a twisted personality.

      @@TayoEXE Thank you for typing everything that you did. I completely agree with all of it. When I was younger, I identified with the Phantom. Being bullied for a stutter I was born with and had no mastery of, it was very difficult to make and keep friends, and cripplingly difficult to talk with girls.
      I especially like what you had to say about the difference between being loved and being pitied. Far too often youngsters confuse the two, and just desire acceptance, sometimes through drastic means.
      While I don't have a wife (and am in no rush to settle), I am eager to find a woman who loves me just the way I am and look forward to reciprocating that exponentially.
      Today I am an accomplished public speaker, up-and-coming children's book author, and in the middle of creating a nonprofit to help people before CPS open the case on them. I like to think that it started from listening to The Phantom of the Opera soundtrack as a kid and identifying with the tragic villain. How can we help people if we don't explore what made them?

    In the 25th anniversary version, the phantom smiled and said "Christine, I love you..." AFTER she gave him the ring, and you can see Christine's face instantly saddens and she kissed his hands in tears. I like it better because it hardens the fact that the phantom learned to love with pure heart: after knowing she didn't came back to stay with him, he wasn't full of rage like he always did before; on the contrary, he smiled at her in the most genuine and heart warming way and let her go in calmness.

    Him being given the ring back and hearing the distant echo of Christine's singing as she exits the cave and a tear rolls down his cheek is one of the most powerfully cinematic moments I have ever seen. It's in that moment that he realises that she is in fact the true Phantom of the Opera - in that he will never be able to hold her again or hear her sing another sheet of his music. The most vital piece of his music and life is truly gone and he is condemned to spend the rest of his life contending with that heartbreak. Such a powerful moment.

    To everyone saying she didn’t choose the Phantom, she actually did. She puts on his ring and kisses him. When she is smiling at him after, happy to choose him, he can’t stop crying. He realizes he can’t do this to her and TELLS HER TO LEAVE WITH RAOUL. When she comes back to return his ring, she still lingers a bit, not wanting to leave. The Phantom knows he isn’t emotionally stable enough for a relationship with Christine, he knows he couldn’t handle it. And he finally has his character arc at the end. They both do.

      That's the Phantom's true name. The Phantom of the Opera wasn't originally a musical, It was a book written by Gaston Leroux. Although I would suggest you read Susan Kay's 'Phantom' it goes a lot more into the phantom's character and early life. The books are a little long, but definitely worth the read!

And the movie made the nice touch of Raul seeing the rose with the ring on it on her grave, symbolizing he still loved her even after all that time magnificent writing.

    This has been my favorite movie of all time since I was little and I’ve watched it over and over again. What I just saw for the first time that I never noticed is at 0:24 when she sings “you are not alone”, she puts the ring that he gave her on her finger before she kisses him. This gave this scene a whole deeper meaning and I’m crying. I believe she truly loved him, different from the love she feels for Raoul.

  • @vp9450

    Do you guys see that tiny smile at 1:01 on Christine's face? THAT says it all. She kissed him twice. The first kiss was for him, and the second for her. She did love him, but she could not stay with him for what he did. After the kiss, she is kinda relieved and sure about her love, I mean, she sees Eric, not the Phantom or the Angel of Music. But when Eric sends her away with her childhood love, her thoughts shatter, as his heart did when he felt her touch. Eric loved her so much, that setting her free was his salvation too. His character ends perfectly with the phrase "It's over now for the music of the night", meaning he played his part in Christine's life, and also felt her loving touch. Christine gave him back his ring, knowing that she loves him and that he will forever be in her mind, heart and voice. Eric was the only one who saw the real Christine, and Christine, besides accepting Eric for what he really is, finally left behind her dead father and the Angel of Music fantasy. (hi stranger, this is just my opinion, I really like talking about this movie)

    • @pillypuppy666
      @pillypuppy666 11 месяцев назад +4

      I actually think the first kiss was for Raoul so that he could live, and the second kiss was for Erik because, after seeing his reaction to the first kiss, Christine didn't want him to feel alone.

      sure, but when was he ever abusive to her? did he hurt her like at all? aside from when she took his mask off but honestly she walked herself into that. he clearly has a mask on for a reason. if she respected his boundaries he would have shown her eventually but anyway, back to the point. he showed her kindness, compassion, and true love. when both Raoul and Erik tell her i love you, you can see who really means it. Raoul only found interest in her after he saw that she could sing. whether he fell in love with her or not eventually, one of them TRULY loved Christine with all their heart. and i’m gonna have to say it was the phantom. agree or disagree but Erik was so kind and gentle with her. Raoul didn’t show love the way Erik showed it. i’d happily go live in the dungeons with him. the phantom of the opera will always hold a place in my heart. great job Gerald Butler

      He shatters the mirrors one by one, finally completely smashing through the last one, as if he is erasing or rejecting his appearance, his life or existence as he has tried to create it. He steps on the broken glass, through the broken mirror, dropping the candlestick, symbolizing what little light he has held onto, and steps into the darkness beyond as the curtain falls behind him. He has passed beyond, further into darkness and isolation.

    the smile after she kissed him makes me tear up, she for a split second actually saw him as a man not the Phantom. then he started crying and all of it shatters and her smile is gone. all he wanted was her love, he gets it and it makes him cry. then she returns the ring, she was told to leave and came back to give her original engagement ring that the Phantom took back to the Phantom. she loves him, she just can't be with him. and if anyone has seen Love Never Dies then the theory of why she came back to give the ring is all more fucking powerful. she does love him... a lot.. but she can't be with him. not cause of his fsce, but because of what he's done.

Even the Ballerina who helped set him free hid him away in the darkness, so was it any wonder that he confused Christine's kindness for love? he never knew love was.

      Although, she pitied him. It is an important distinction. I feel really sorry for him, but it isn't the type of love associated with sacrifice and admiration. It's kind of like when you hear someone's sad story and they say "Awwww, I could just hug/kiss you." On the other hand, she did have some connection to him when he was her Angel of Music, but it was not romantic. He had to offer an illusion, but he even realized that she could not stay with him in his fantasy. His desperation had lead to manipulation, murder, and kidnapping.

    I wanted Christine to choose Erik, but not because of everyone else's reason. He didn't love her for 90% of the movie, not until the end. The rest of it was obsession with possessing beauty, as in Christine. But anyways, I wanted Christine to choose Erik because he needed someone to show him compassion, love, and how to be a little more, well, humane. Instead, (based on my knowledge of this movie, i havent read the book or anything) he was left in the dungeon to wallow in his mental pain and longing for love til (i'm guessing) death. If anyone knows if there's something I'm missing or if he was happy with what he had at the end or something, please correct me. Thank you

    Anyone that loves the Phantom and Christine together should read the original script for this movie :) it shows what the writers actually meant for the scenes to mean to the viewers. in the script, they say Christine and him share a "lovers kiss" at the end, and brings light to a lot of the chemistry they have together and what she's thinking and meant to portray in their scenes they share. My favorite part after reading the script is that in the end, it says she's supposed to be singing her part in "All I ask of you" to the Phantom and that, that's why she never stops looking back and keeps her gaze on him until he's gone. It's like how he sang his version of "All I Ask Of You" to her after "The Point Of No Return" and she's responding!

      And fun fact, in the sequel to Phantom of the Opera - Love Never Dies, Christine, Raoul (Now her husband) and their son, Gustave are invited to come to the United States (Specifically New York as the setting is Coney Island) for Christine to perform at the Phantasm, unaware that it's actually the Phantom whom had contacted her, and over time, it turns out that Gustave is not Raoul's son, he's in fact the Phantom/Erik's son as it's confirmed that after the events of Phantom of the Opera, Erik reunited with Christine and ended up conceiving Gustave before she got married to Raoul.
      It ends this time around with another death but not at the hands of the Phantom like with the chandelier in the Opera House; but one of the Phantom's workers - Meg (Madam Giry's daughter and friend to Christine) shoots Christine by accident whilst trying to be calmed down by the Phantom and Christine dies in the phantom's arms with Christine admitting that her "love will never die" and that Gustave takes his fathers mask off and touches his face without fear after the phantom, ran to the end of the cony island dock, leaving Christine's deceased body with Raoul, Meg and Giry.

If she didn't, she wouldn't have looked back at him when she was sailing off the boat. She might have had some small crush feelings for Raoul but that was it.

    Some people say that Gerard didn’t have a good enough voice for the role but in my opinion this is so far from the truth. Based on true vocal skills he is obviously not the best singer, but I don’t think the point was for him to be angelic and have a spectacular voice, his voice shows a large spectrum of emotions that is a pretty vital part of the phantom of the opera itself. If he had such a voice that is almost to good to be true it wouldn’t show the pain he is and was in in the same extent as how his character was meant to feel. His voice portrayed his character and his raw emotions to practically the full extent that it could have been depicted as.

    I don't understand people's hate toward this film! Yes, I have read the book and I know Gerard Butler's scar is nothing compared to what the Phantom was supposed to look like but the Production is great and so is the singing! Emmy Rossum was 17 for God's sake and her voice is so much better than Sierra's, who's being shoved up our faces.

    • @YatzSliversword
      @YatzSliversword 8 лет назад +81

      +Infxnity Emmy isn't better than Sierra by any stretch of the imagination, but I can agree that for being 17 at the time she did quite good.

    • @pastelbuns
      @pastelbuns 8 лет назад +44

      ***** In my opinion, Emmy Rossum's voice has better acoustic than Sierra's. Then again, it depends on someone's taste in music & vocals sometimes.

    • @YatzSliversword
      @YatzSliversword 8 лет назад +51

      Infxnity If we're talking Phantom, in this version Emmy's songs are recorded in a studio so they could edit it to touch up any errors, whereas Sierra's are always live on a stage. It takes quite a lot of experience to be able to sing (with all those killer high notes) for two hours straight, but Emmy is quite nice, studio or no, and yes it does depend on tastes. Emmy does quite good at portraying a young, innocent Christine like in the book.

    • @pastelbuns
      @pastelbuns 8 лет назад +6

      ***** The only thing I didn't like about the film was that Christine literally THREW herself in Raoul's arms, while in the book she was hesitant in the beginning.

    • @YatzSliversword
      @YatzSliversword 8 лет назад +7

      Infxnity Yes, especially considering that in the book Erik is far more intimidating and creepy (he filled up an entire room with flowers, and has a room with clothes and everything prepped and ready for Christine even before she arrives for crying out loud) and Christine still doesn't leap into Raoul's arms, even though he's the exact opposite of Erik--kind, gentlemanly and handsome.

  • @Jaasau
    @Jaasau 2 года назад +18

    I like the way the 25 Anniversary direction put this scene together FAR better. From the scream, to the “I love you” and the fact that he says it AFTER he sees her take off the ring, to the subtle look over the shoulder toward Erik as she starts to sing “All I Ask…” the 25th Anniversary is simply the definitive depiction of this story. The direction is perfection.

    I always felt that in the final moments when she kissed him that Christine realized her heart belonged to her Angel and she didn't want to leave with Raoul. That's not to say she didn't love Raoul but it was clearly more of the love one has for someone who they've known since childhood; it was based on nostalgia and it was innocent and uncomplicated. The love Christine shares with the Phantom (whose name in the novel is Erik) is mature, it's passionate, and it is deep but they were star crossed. I love the fact that she initiates a second kiss because the first awakened something in her or perhaps it simply allowed her to admit to herself how she truly felt. The other moment I love from this scene is that Christine looks back at her Angel before the boat rounds the corner so she can see him one final time. It's a beautiful story and a wonderful experience in both the musical and movie theaters.
