  • Overture from the 35th Anniversary performance of The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway.
    *PLEASE DO NOT REPOST WITHOUT PERMISSION*

    CAMERA: iPhone 13 Pro Max
    LOCATION: Majestic Theatre, NYC
    SEAT: Front Mezzanine, Row G, Seat 107
    NOTE (PLEASE READ):
    This video was uploaded purely for entertainment purposes only, and to preserve the legacy of the final flagship Brilliant Original production of The Phantom of the Opera, which permanently closed on April 16, 2023. This, along with the several other videos on this channel, were uploaded with the hopes that viewers would see what this incredible show once was before being reduced and scaled down (except in Japan and Korea), only to be called "substantially identical" to the original. To all new and long time "Phans" of the show, please do not be fooled by the show's official spokespeople and creatives. No matter what they say, any version of this show that does not resemble the one in this video is NOT the Brilliant Original, and is NOT "bigger and better" in any way. All this to say, please do not take this as me saying one should not appreciate Phantom. I am simply aiming to inform those who do not know about the true reason this show lasted for so long (as I'm sure by the time you read this the creatives will act like this version never existed). So please, enjoy this preservation of musical theatre history.

    Wow I didn't expect this to blow up - thank you all for watching! I have more content on my channel if you are all interested (including another overture video!)
    Also - to watch in high quality: click on the settings icon, and select "Quality". On computer: just select the highest quality available (it will be at the top of the list). On mobile: select "Advanced" and then select the highest quality available (it will also be at the top of the list). Hopefully this helps to enhance your viewing experience!

    There is no other feeling in the world like the one where you're sitting in the Majestic Theater and being able to watch the chandelier rise and the curtains recede. Watching this video took me back to sitting in one of those chairs and having the privilege to feel the music permeate throughout my whole body, especially in my chest. There was a lady sitting next to me who cried throughout the play. At the end of the play, I remember my friend and I rushing to the back alley to get our playbills signed. We were fortunate enough to have met a girl who sewn her own dress and another girl who saw a show every single week. The whole cast signed her playbill and it was delivered by one of the crew that helped set this amazing set up every night. Sad to see it go, but thankful to God that I got to experience this.

    I’ve seen Phantom 10 times, 9 of them in NYC and once in London (all pre-COVID) - every single time, when the Auctioneer starts his line “Perhaps we may frighten away the ghost of so many years ago with a little illumination, gentlemen?”, the stupidest grin comes onto my face immediately followed by chills when the chandelier sparks to life and rises over our collective heads with that music just booming and reverberating in the theatre - I’ve seen tons of shows since my first Phantom visit but that moment was my absolute favorite moment to watch every time at a theatre and I’m so deeply sad that this is now gone - thank you for preserving theatre history… now gotta see if I could watch this w/ some powerful speakers to try and replicate the feeling again 🥹❤️👏

    Thank you very much for sharing this moment! As an avid fan of the iconic "Phantom of the Opera," I have always longed for the opportunity to witness its majestic production on Broadway. Unfortunately, I recently discovered that the show was in its last month of performances just as I, as an adult with the means to travel, was in a position to attend. My visa to travel to the United States was denied. However, during my recent trip to Japan, I had the chance to witness the Japanese version of the show and experienced an emotion like never before. It was an impressive experience and one of the most beautiful memories of my life. I even bought an adorable Phantom teddy bear as a keepsake of that unforgettable moment. Although I deeply yearn for the show to return to Broadway someday, I feel completely satisfied to have witnessed the stunning chandelier scene in the Japanese version. It gave me goosebumps and a deep emotion to see the theater reconstructed to the sound of the main theme.♥♥

    I got quite teary hearing the wild applause at the start of the overture, again as the chandelier sweeps off the stage, and finally as Carlotta emerges holding Elissa's bloody trophy.
    I was lucky enough to sit in at the Majestic for the final time just before Christmas, front row centre. An astounding and deeply moving experience, knowing that I would never again get to see and hear the incredible original production that captured my heart and imagination nearly a whole lifetime ago.
    The anemic version currently playing in London certainly fares better than the revised production of Les Mis playing up the road, but nothing will compare to the lavish, intricate, lovingly crafted original concept of Bjornson's set and costumes underscored by a 27-piece pit orchestra.
    (Oh, and that "spectacular" new Cameron Mackintosh touring production... the worst thing ever.)

    I first saw Phantom in 1989 in Los Angeles at the Ahmanson with Michael Crawford (in the 6th row... we could see his sweat haha) and just hearing the music reminds me of how that show made me feel. I grew up in the theater with parents who were actors and technicians... yet at the time, nothing was as intricate as the theater going from the dusty auction scene to where it and the chandelier was restored to its former glory. And the theater seemed much larger (but maybe that was an illusion). I saw it three more times, once with Davis Gaines, once Robert Guillaume, and one other, whose name I've forgotten. I've been enjoying the nostalgia all this month with Phantom.

I got the chance to see it in 2000 for the first time, which started my love of Phantom & again one last time this past January before it closed. I almost cried as the chandelier rose, but during Masquerade is when I really did cry as it’s my most favorite song from Phantom. Just curious, what stage door did they sign Playbills at? I’ve always wondered, but never have seen or heard where it was. Was it along 44th St or on 45th St? I know I’ve read the actual stage door was on 45th St. When I was there both times the cast wasn’t signing, at least on 44th St.

    The Phantom of the Opera (mandarin) has just started its national tour. It's a reproduction of the World Tour, which, unsurprisingly, is a scaled down version of the Brilliant Original. I believe Phans in China will be really excited to see the show at its most glorious.

    Only ever seen the film version. Is the stage show just as good?

    • @_zeerosd

      the brilliant original stage production is astronomically better. this is obviously my opinion and therefore subjective, but i strongly believe the 2004 film fails on multiple (very important) things, from poor direction to miscast roles to poorly executed effects (e.g. in the film, the phantom’s “deformity” looks more like a mild sunburn). the only redeeming quality of the film in my opinion is its large orchestra.

    I had seen it in London many years ago (queued for 3 hours for a ticket) BUT the version at the Royal Albert Hall during covid was a most excellent production sanctioned my ALW himself. It lacked the spectacle of the moving scenery but excellent quality and artists. The DVD is rubbish.

    why did it shutdown, not only in NY but ALSO LONDON..?!?😮

    • @_zeerosd
      @_zeerosd  Год назад +2

      the brilliant original production of the show, which played at her majesty’s theatre (now his majesty’s theatre), closed in london during covid. they used this opportunity to remove all the sets to perform a much needed structural renovation to the theatre (which is a whole story in and of itself). in 2021, after the renovations were completed, a new, cheaper set was installed in her majesty’s. this was done so that billionaire producer cameron mackintosh could get out of paying royalties to the original creatives’ estates. this new, scaled down production is what currently runs at that theatre. at the majestic theatre in new york, due in part to high running costs but mostly the shows producer wanting to reduce the show in a similar fashion to london, the show closed on broadway. i give it two years tops and it will be back with only half the original orchestra and reduced sets. apologies for the long reply, but it is a complicated issue and since so many accounts are circulating, it’s important to know what really happened and the real motives behind closing the show.

    This looks like the (amazing) original production. Did they just do the god-awful redesign for the touring production and leave the Broadway version alone?

    • @_zeerosd
      @_zeerosd  Год назад +2

      the tours have been reduced versions for some time now. the original west end production closed permanently in 2020 in favor of a watered down cheap version with 1/2 the orchestra and several other cuts. they would have done this to broadway at that time as well, but due to the strong actor/musician unions they were unable to because of contracts. when the contracts ended they closed broadway. i give it 2 years at most and it will be back in a reduced format, much like london. all to get out of paying royalties to the original creatives.
