    These are the crashes that stood out to me:
    1:05 Austria Concert 2012
    Definitely the most unique on this list
    2:32 Sweden Revival 2017
    A rare example of a smooth crash in terms of timing. The lights come on at the exact same time the chandelier fully reaches the stage and the music is exactly on beat with the crash itself
    3:00 Norway Non-replica 2019
    By far the most realistic crash in terms of speed and presentation. The fact that it slightly tilts towards the audience as it comes down really sells the idea that it’s a real almost free fall crash
    3:43 Poland non replica revival 2019
    A LOT of pyro to simulate the lights bursting and that final blast to simulate the chandelier shattering into pieces

    • @jaredildefonzo

      The last production of Phantom of the Opera that I went to here in Tulsa this was exactly how the chandelier crash went and I and the woman to the right of me we're right under where it 'crashed'. She and some other people near her were terrified and screamed and shrieked and tried to get under their seats, it was hysterical! I have seen the production so many times with the chandelier crash fashion so many slightly different ways that I just turned and looked at it as it crashed and kind of giggled a little bit. It stopped just barely above our heads. I mean they had good control of it it did not even touch our heads at all but stopped at about an inch above or maybe an inch and a half.

    I looked into it, and it seems the "original" West End production may really be gone. It seems the set will be a mix of the original and the 2020 restaged tour (the golden angel is gone), and the chandelier will be similar to the newer straight drop tour version(non-collapsible) but look more like the original chandelier. The only "original" show will be on Broadway, especially if you want to see the original chandelier.

    • @tobyfinney768
      @tobyfinney768 3 года назад +5

      From what I’ve heard, the 2020 modified tour is almost exactly the same of the original London with a few tiny modifications. I know that the proscenium is different but the sets are generally the same. The new chandelier was made to look closer to Maria’s original design but unfortunately they couldn’t get it constructed in time.

    • @PrismsofGlass
      @PrismsofGlass  3 года назад +6

      @@tobyfinney768 Based on reviews from phans, it's closer to London than the restaged tour, but not as close as the modified World Tour; the split is something like 75% the same, 25% differences. A few lyrics and orchestrations have been altered (some of it seems taken from the restaged tours), a couple costumes are changed, there's no Golden Angel but instead a Pegasus statue, things like that. It's not enough for me to call it a restaging, but I'm not sure I'd call it a replica either. Hence, "modified".

  • @DrexelGregory
    @DrexelGregory 3 года назад +26

    I didn’t know they were doing that restaged version as early as 2012. I didn’t even know till it existed until I bought tickets to the tour in 2020 and noticed how different it was. I’m amazed it wasn’t bigger news.

    • @PrismsofGlass
      @PrismsofGlass  3 года назад +2

      Well it was big news in 2012-2013 when the restaged UK and US tours were starting, especially if you were in the fandom. If you weren't and didn't even know it existed until then, that's probably the reason why you never heard about it until 2020.

    Norway Non-Replica was by far the best. Similar style to the Vegas version in having a HUGE chandelier which actually drops downwards into a blackout rather than so many that are an underwhelming slow lowering which then swings at the stage.The Modified 2020 UK tour would've been good too if it'd dropped earlier and FASTER. I'd love to see some new idea on staging where they could really make that chandelier drop terrifying and more effective!

      If you saw it 2 or 3 years ago in San Francisco then you saw the restaged tour production, which is different from the original and accordingly features a different chandelier fall. That's why it didn't drop to the stage, but instead dropped and stopped over the audience heads.

      The London one hasn't changed at all, so really any video of the London production's chandelier crash will do! Norway's is pretty different from London in that it actually drops almost on the audience, whereas the London chandelier swings down over the audience but lands on the stage (though I'm sure emotionally and depending on where you were sitting, it might have FELT like it was going to land on you).

    Valentines Day San Francisco Ca. Matinee. 1998? Balcony Front Row. The chandelier was set so far back and past the cat walks it really wasn't visible but you could feel it though. When time it silently came down it passed just feet above but I sat to its right so I was able to see it's left side as it plunged towards stage and when it slammed onto the stage I did not see anyone whisk the girl out of the way,in fact no one ran stage left but I saw 2 actors and definitly the actress buried under the chandelier as it knocked them down. No stranger to the stage, I know what I saw so I jumped up and had to fight my way through the intermission crowd so upset and in tears of concern heading to the front access to the stage manager to find out if the actors were okay. 10 minutes or so I found the manager and explained what I had seen and I had to see if they were alright.He took me into the stage office and waited as he investigated. I never acted this way before. On return he assured me that the actress was just fine and thanked me personally for caring so much. Not one of these clips were like the Valentine's Day crash that I saw. It slammed and landed entirely ON the stage. Great show.

      In the Swedish revival clip, yes. In the Swedish clip from 1991, it's Mikael Samuelson.

    As cool as the non-replicas look and as superior as they may be overall to the original, they all really have an equal effect on the audience. The non-replicas add a bit of real terror but I don't really see that as a good thing. Your life is in the hands of the people who put the show together and there is trust with the original because it is time tested and almost guaranteed to never fail. The nonreplicas are done very professionally but at the back of your mind you know those versions have had very limited exposure and the mechanics behind them have not been perfected so I'll take the original over the other ones.

      I completely agree with you actually. There's something about the chandelier enchanting us and "pulling" us into the Phantom's theater at the intro and trusting it/her ("Ruthie"!) during the entire first act as she hovers over us the entire time... for the chandelier to crash into the audience feels almost like a betrayal, an attack, and it misplaces the Phantom's rage at being toward us, and not toward the characters.

    Not that this was shown here, but I HATED the way the 25th anniversary production went. The chandelier was basically just a light fixture not a chandelier, and it sparked... That was all. Also digital backgrounds were popular then and with the closeups on the actors, they would Pixilate

    • @fellinuxvi3541
      @fellinuxvi3541 Год назад

      It wasn't really due to popularity but the fact that the venue was very unfriendly for Phantom. The 25th anniversary is more like an acted out concert than another production.

    Why does the UK tour Chandelier not fall, but the US tour's does?

    • @PrismsofGlass
      @PrismsofGlass  3 года назад +1

      I believe that the lack of a chandelier fall was the original intent to make the show more tour-able, but the decision was unpopular with audiences so they changed it to a falling chandelier when the tour went to the US.

    hmmmm... ok, first: thx for the upload, of course. then: I dunno how to put it... but wow, are these "crashes" lame. none of them is really creative and/or spectacular (ok, I got mercy on poland with its speed and crashing sound). and why do all phantoms sound like tarzan or like market criers taking a dump?

    • @queenofrandomthings4920
      @queenofrandomthings4920 3 года назад +6

      1) because they are supposed to be screaming “Go!”
      2) Most of these are in different languages, making “go” sound different bc it’s a different word.
      3) Safety precautions from the theaters and countries are different so there are different fall speeds, and different crash effects.

      @@queenofrandomthings4920 'bout no.1: I would find it way creepier if the phantom would stay silent. 'bout no.3: maybe. but some of these chandeliers crashes are so slowly that it totally kills the suspense. don't get me wrong here: I have already problems with how the scene is played: why would erik send the chandelier after christine in the first place??? according to the story, erik loves her and would never endanger her. and secondly, according to the story, he wanted to punish the audience and the opera staff. thus, throwing the chandelier after christine makes even less sense.

      @@phoneguy4637 he send the chandelier crashing down to Christine because she betrays by getting engaged to Raoul during “All I Ask Of You”. His last words in the reprise of “All I Ask Of You” are “ You will curse the day you did not do, all that the Phantom asked of you.”

    • @phoneguy4637
      @phoneguy4637 3 года назад +2

      @@jammyd1817 the thing is that the musical- and opera version of the novel swapped chronological events in attempt to give erik a reason to send the chandelier towards christine. in the novel, the proposal between christine and raoul happens long AFTER the chandelier crash. erik "just" kidnaps her into his lair and forces her into marriage. when christine ditches erik for good, he dies from heart attack.
