    I love how you can tell what countries have stricter safety codes by how fast the chandelier falls.

      @varianbond 5 лет назад +69

      Pauly Walnuts No kidding... like, Austria and Japan’s versions of OSHA are total buzzkills... Canada’s and Spain’s are pretty standard... Germany and Belgium have me worried that whoever set their safety standards has a danger complex...
      And holy SHIT Mexico, that chandelier swung a WHOLE lot later than most (I almost wondered if it had malfunctioned 😨) Mexico, fam... u ok??? (EDIT: I’m questioning Hungary’s sanity even more than Mexico’s WTFFF)
      And then there’s Vegas. Which... I mean... we already knew that - to loosely quote Hamiton - “everything is legal in Las Vegas”.

    I remember being on Broadway in 2008 when I was thirteen and seeing POTO. The chandelier dropping was literally the most amazing thing I had ever seen. We were sitting down low beneath it and I didn't know that it was going to drop. My heart nearly flew out of my chest, it's an experience I'll never forget. Ours was great, it came down fast and hard and swinging.

    Most US ones seem pretty lame. Poland was fierce with the pyrotechnics. The German falls seem to actually be the best, especially Hamburg. The Las Vegas one is very cool as well, though. I imagine it being terrifying when you sit right beneath the chandelier.

    I think the chandeliers in Germany drops the fastest, and the Las Vegas one is the most realistic. If they could combine the genuineness of Las Vegas, the sparks of the 25th anniversary and the speed of the Germany ones, then it would be perfect. BTW, why are there two chandeliers, one at the stage and one at the audience in the Las Vegas production?

    • @ethancheng6707
      @ethancheng6707 9 лет назад +5

      MithraMusic
      Perhaps, but in all fairness, Hungary's chandelier could probably go as fast as it wants, because it's not dropping directly over the audience. I rather agree with the OP; Germany's was one of the fastest (though Vegas is very cool, Poland had some nice effects, and in other videos of the Mexico production it seemed to drop way faster).

I can even link you to the actual videos I got these from just so you can see the original. If you want to blame anyone, blame the production, not the person who actually took the time to collect clips and make this for you. Besides, I think the Mexican, German, and Vegas productions show how fast it can go.

It was a fantastic experience I've always likened to a rock concert because of the action and energy, flames shooting from the stage and explosions. This video doesn't do justice to how cool and intense the chandelier crash was because it felt like it was swinging only feet above my head. VERY EXCITING!

    For the people beating on the 25th's chandelier crash, there are several reasons why they did not do the traditional crash. First of all, the auditorium was not meant for anything of that nature. Second, the relation of the audience and the stage was different than other auditoriums. This meant that it would be very dangerous to stage the crash. There were a few other reasons, but mostly, it was just not safe and the setting was all wrong. The traditional crash is to swing the chandelier down onto stage. That would have been impossible in this setting. I believe that the 2,000+ explosives they had on the chandelier would have been just as scary as a chandelier swinging down. Imagine having something suddenly explode over your head and then the lights turn out. That would be scary.

I watched a mini documentary on the making of that show, and they had the toughest time even getting that beast into the theatre and on to the ceiling that making it crash would have literally been impossible. personally being a musician myself I like the timing of Broadway's crash, I think the chandelier should be descending during the 32nd note runs, swing forward on the sustained G, hit/rest/stop on the stage on the triplet C's, and the lights out with the final flash/spark on the final 8th note C.

    • @HeidiKohne

    I was thinking of something along the same lines. If they dropped the chandelier straight down and stopped it over the audiences heads but faded the lights to black so the audience see it start to fall but not it landing. If they combined it with the sparking of the 25th anniversary version and the sound of it crashing in the darkness, I think it would create a very dramatic effect.

    I really like the way the chandelier falls on the Poland show! It looks very realistic! you can also hear it crashing and breaking like the sound of glass breaking!
    What I love from the Vegas is the moment where it crashes! At the end of point of no return just when Christine takes the mask of, it's a very dramatic moment! just perfect for disaster!
    And the worst is the 25 Anniversary, it doesn't even fall! Too bad for a very special ocasion!

    the chandelier is supposed to crash when carlotta croaks.. why would phantom crash it when christine is right underneath it?

    • @PrismsofGlass
      @PrismsofGlass  8 лет назад

      Three possibilities: 1) dramatic effect, 2) to show the Phantom is angrier at Christine for falling in love with Raoul than he is at Carlotta getting a role (makes sense, given what we know of him), or 3) safety - they can't ACTUALLY drop the chandelier on the audience, so they swing it towards the stage.

    • @mars9380
      @mars9380 8 лет назад

      +Glass Prism when carlotta croaks, he said himself her croak will make the chandelier fall (in the 25th).. The phantom cant harm christine because he love her very much so im really confused.. Anyway i think i must stop comparing it to the novel because it is very different to this musical show😊

    • @PrismsofGlass
      @PrismsofGlass  8 лет назад +5

      He does say that, and I believe the chandelier does swing, but it's likely meant more as a threat to get Carlotta off the stage. As for the latter... while the Phantom may claim to love Christine, his actions certainly do not show that (stalking her, kidnapping her, etc.), and I don't find it too out of character that, in a moment of anger, he would drop the chandelier on her, though he probably knows that Raoul or some other person would whisk her to safety. And again - dramatic effect and safety reasons. They also control how the show goes, just as much as plot.

    Some of these are not that impressive, such as Japan, Austria, and the US depending on which production. But Germany, Mexico, and Poland are just straight up insane, but not the good kind of insane. Germany’s was just scary, and that scream just made it scarier. Mexico looked like it went too low before it started to swing. Seems like Poland just loves their pyrotechnics, but it seems dangerous with the amount of pyrotechnics that was used when it was swinging.

    So in the original show back in the 80's, didn't they use more pyro effects? And then they dropped them later on? Because I remember feeling the heat from the sparks in Los Angeles. Some of these chandelier drops in other countries looked like they actually dropped a chandelier and told the cast to flee for their lives. :)

    • @PrismsofGlass
      @PrismsofGlass  4 года назад +4

      The Vegas version was shortened to a one-act, 90 minute show with no intermission. Because of that, the chandelier crash was changed to happen at the end of 'Point of No Return', since there was no need for a grand Act 1 finale if there was no Act 1. Hope that explains it!

    In no other musical the theater becomes a character and audience immerses in the storytelling as part of the whole action. We keep going to POTO because it is the ultimate musical experience. The Chandelier crash is Maria Bjornson's touch of geniality, the opera house itself becomes a character because of that dramatic moment. Poland's production is the most impressive 👍👍.

    Terribly done in most productions, I think they try it once and never tried to do it in some other way; it looks ridiculous, the chandelier looks like the Close Encounters main ship, too colorful at times, the lights look too christmasy, it descends instead of falling...
