Norm Lewis made history in May 2014 when he became the first African-American actor to star as the Phantom of the Opera on Broadway in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical at the Majestic Theatre. It's a role that Lewis, a Tony nominee for The Gershwins' Porgy & Bess and a cast member of nine other Broadway shows, has always wanted to play, and he's making the most of his run. TheaterMania went backstage to spend a day with Lewis as he got himself ready for a two-show day, from greeting his fellow cast members to getting suited up with the infamous Phantom mask. Just the reference to Sierra makes me happy
I love how genuinely passionate and happy he seems. There's something so amazing about the love that people have for theatre, and his is no exception.
Camille Daaé SO TRUE!!
@Merrick Wallace but why?
I love Norm. He just has this amazing personality that could make anyone smile. Also oh my god the Sierra doll. I know, I miss her too bud. 😂
Jeremy Hays looks so caught off guard! And he's looking at the doll trying to hide it. It's so CUTE!!! Plus he looks sad before he's caught almost like he's Reminiscing.
Haliyma Clay A doll for collectors indeed, every detail exactly as they said. They often spoke of these my friend, they have fluffy stuffings and their figurines of plush. Are they still there when all the rest of us have left?
@Erik The Opera Ghost DUDE WHAT THE HECK I SEE YOU EVERYWHERE

Well... It is... _him_
@@MrNoUsername Hello Erik.
@@MrNoUsername lot 666, then
A chandelier in pieces,
Some of you may recall the strang affair
Of the Phantom of the Opera.
A mystery never fully explained
We're told, ladies and gentlemen
That this is the very chandelier
Which figures in the famous disaster
I love this rendition of the phantom. Love Sierra and Karimloo but also I would like to have a DVD/BLURAY with the full show with Norm Lewis. I think he did it great and his performance was relevant beacause he was the first African American in Broadway to play the role. Besides that he was a baritone when generally the people who played tha part were tenor.
Well all i know he sings beautiful and gives me chills
I want to see it on DVD right now
"I want your love, that's what I want!" Norm Lewis is a national treasure. X)
He is so talented and such a humble man...seriously a good role model for any person these days.
2:36 When Raoul is EXTREMELY fascinated by Christine (played by Seirra Boggess) haha. And I LOVE NORM LEWIS. HE SEEMS SO NICE.
He looked like a younger Bill Cosby for a second when that bald cap was first put on. He's amazing and probably should have been cast much sooner. People still need to recognize Robert Guillaume as the first African American Phantom.
Roberts the first phantom. But on Broadway, Norm is the first one. When people say Norm Lewis is the first black phantom they mean on Broadway
He must have put the pudding and pills while with Christine
@Shahdae Azura but they should say, the first on Broadway
He seems so genuine and kind.
With a voice like that he would make a great Martian Manhunter.
I frigging love Norm Lewis.
I would have loved to see him as phantom. His excitement is contagious
Norm Lewis is SO amazing. . . going to have to get back to NYC to see this.
This guy has a new lifelong fan. The personality matches the voice.........simply amazing.
His passionate feeling makes me so happy :D
I SAW HIM AS THE PHANTOM LIVE HE WAS AWESOME
luckyyyyy
This guy's fabulous
I love how Norm Lewis says "did you make this?" 😂 HAHA!!!!!!!!!!!
SLAY NORM SLAAAAYYYY
He is so talented and beyond adorable👏😭😭

Sierra Boggess?! 😂😂😂
She left the show!
@@BetteDavis19 do you know why she left?:0
Art Ardere she was only contracted for a few months
I was so happy when I learned he did Phantom, he was one of my favorite Javerts in Les Mis
Norm Lewis feels like the father I desperately want

pinnate she left and it means that like people are missing her
Norm Lewis God Bless and PLEASE come to RUclips Spaces L.A.
I never realized how small the phantom dressing room was.. OMG Kaley! She’s so awesome!! And Jeremy 🤣🤣🤣 OMG I LOVE THIS CAST aaaa ❤️
Sometimes I wonder if Sierra has actually watched this video, and seen the doll...
Laughing over the doll, it's like OOPS MY BAD ! :D
AHH HE'S SO GREAT
Saw Kaley Ann last week and she was fantastic! Also if you saw Norm as Javert than you wouldn't guess hes such an uplifting guy. Such a good actor

Oh, Norm! I love The Phantom of The Opera! I wish I could see it in person!
Awesome Phantom Of The Opera Backstage Tour. Thanks Mate. X
Norm, can you tell the ushers at the Majestic to be quiet during the show. I saw the show back in September and they were talking during the opening scene.
He's so right... Developing and establishing that pre-show energy is the absolute key to a performance.
Norm Lewis is the best person ever prove me wrong
what a great guy
0:01 Norm Lewis Also Played The Role Of King Triton From Disney's The Little Mermaid The Broadway Musical In 2008 Based On The Academy Award Winning 1989 Walt Disney Pictures Animated Family Musical Blockbuster Movie And Hans Christian Andersen's Classic Novel Of The Same Name. Thanks Mate. X
Great voice ☺

Norm is just as sweet as his voice.
Hahahah the Sierra doll 😂
WHEN HE SAID THE DOLL WAS SIERRA!!!
Hoping he comes back. I missed him when he performed the role. Also, Norm looks great with a "bald" head!
Mg i saw all of the in the recent phantom of the opera musical at the majestic
To quote from Robin Hood: MIT:
Peasants: A Black Phantom??
Blinkin: He's Black??
How the phantom gets ready for a performance listening to happy
I Cosplay (and sing) this "Phantom", and I want Thelma to put that makeup on me!!!
Anyone know of a complete show recording of Norm as the phantom?I mean a legitimate one, not a cell phone video? Thanks!
I love it. You're wonderful m
He's so beautiful, so cute, so funny... Man.. 😔 Wow
Do they do the signed posters all the time or just occasionally? And how do I get one, because I would love to watch a show and get a poster too
Actually, Norm was not the first minority Phantom on Broadway. That was Kevin Gray
I wish I turned out as well as Norm Lewis did :P
It's soooo nice that the Phantom has been played by a black man👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
No Sierra? :(
She had already ended her run by this time
I got to meat Thelma when i went to see the show. I may or may not have screamed.
JEREMY HAYES. What even.... lol
Well I'm planning to be the very first young Phantom. I don't know if I'd either be on Broadway or the US Tour but either way I'd feel successful.
I have the same dream, but make it Christine 😆
@Christine Daaé haha. Never mind. I’m 24. Who was the 21 year old Phantom out of curiosity?
Why's his dressing room so small?
MissingSirius A majority of buildings in New York City are small.
Phantom
How do I make it without college of music?
Adrian Ghandtchi Private lessons? Seriously, I’ve thought what you’re thinking too. If I knew before, drama would definitely be what I chose to do in college. It’s hopeless now...
Norm Lewis was not the first African-American Phantom. Robert Guillaume was.
On Broadway?
Kevin Whitmer
He came after Michael Crawford.
Kevin Whitmer
My mom was the one who told me that Robert was the first African-American Phantom. She never said whether he was on Broadway, Off-Broadway, West End, etc. Norm Lewis was the African-American Phantom on Broadway. Sorry about that.
Jordan Nickel-Dubin i believe he only did it in LA
Michael Dillon
Yeah, I looked it up. Thanks for the correction. My mom had told me that Robert was the first African-African Phantom, and I thought that meant the first African-American Phantom anywhere. Thanks! Have a great day!
When the camera was moving back it actually looks like he was bald
where's sierra?
DOWNY BOTTLE oh, that's a shame.
but thanks.
DOWNY BOTTLE Why?
DOWNY BOTTLE she didn't quit or got fired. Her run ended
I want your voice...
She became an alternate, that must suck to be a main then an alternate
2:20
Is there anyone more sweet or loveable?
Robert Gullam was the fist African American fandom
Robert was the first ever but he was in London, Norm is the first on Broadway
Katie Tucker *Los Angeles
Šebek? Are you a Croatian or a Serbian?
Jeremy is me
Gurl shes so sweet and beautiful but she didnt want to dance
The ending is cringe, but we love norm for that
yikes at the fur lmao
Sierra boggess is the best Christine
He plays the phantom? But he's black, not that there's anything wrong with that, just surprising to me.
The Phantom is not an historical person..so he can be any race.
@@annmitchell4663 True. He can be any race. Just historically he has always been played by a white man, but yes any race can play him.
