3:41 I mean wow I’ve never heard him go so dark before and you can tell nether has the crowd you can hear them shocked by the delivery, all phantom should have done that well done ❤
I absolutely adore all of Hugh's slightly different acting choices, I truly imagine Erik to be just like him! Also love Anthony Warlow and Peter Jöback :)
This is what they call TOTAL "character freedom" folks. Everyone is going too have little subtleties that are different from each other. That's why people have gone too see this marvelous production so many times. Because each Phantom is played a bit differently. And i love that about this character.
It's so not fair that we may never see this version ever performed again. The room for character interpretation in the original was an absolute blessing to both cast and audience.
Omg! Yes true to the book where he cries before he finally lets Christine good for good. This why I love theater and why people don't get how I can see the same show more than once (I saw Joseph three times, Cats 3 times and POTO twice and will see it again someday!). Performers always bring their own flair to a role.
I like it best when Christine wants so badly to stay with poor Erik because she does love him so very much, but she just can't cause he's just too damn crazy - God love him.
So sad too see this WONDERFUL musical come to an end. I was lucky enough too see Crawford and Brightman back in the 80's when they finally made it over to NY. I also saw Sierra Boggess and Ramin in their respective roles. WOW JUST WOW too both of them...!!! They had great chemistry together for sure. I was also shocked but not surprised too hear Andrew Lloyd Webber discussing how much it costs to put this production on each week. Something like close to a million dollars...!!! That's just insane but worth every penny. Especially, after he commented on the younger generation really taking an interest in this musical now. And i understand it's a cost cutting measure after all as a singer myself music doesn't make a lot of money folks. But their is something VERY special about this musical because it's more than just a love story at it's roots. It's about acceptance of one's differences. And individual being The Phantom who feels like an outcast of society. If that doesn't speak volumes and hold A TON of relevancy in today's political landscape. Especially, in the LGBTQ+ community which i'm a part of. Then i don't know what does. It's a damn shame it's being pulled. They younger generation deserves too see this live and in living color not on a computer or TV screen.
Hugh Panaro and Earl Carpenter had some of the best choices I’ve seen for a Phantom. Super cool to see that character in a slightly new light. but Brad’s “you try my patience” was a whole other level!! I was blown away by such a powerful and unique acting choice!!! Gina Beck’s Christine choices were also really good, I loved the righteous anger and despair when she belts out “angel of music” and the fall to her knees in tears, being genuinely hurt by his betrayal of her trust.
Thank you so much for this video. I saw Brad Little perform this on tour when I was 10. He read "You try my patience," exactly like this, and while I have seen Phantom multiple times in my life, this interpretation is the one that has never left my mind since I was a kid. If you do another one of these, I would love to see more moments with Gina Beck. I've never seen another actress perform Christine as unhinged and multifaceted as Beck does, and I think the character is all the more compelling for it.
I know people couldn’t bring him up more than they already do, but considering he’s genuinely just my favorite, my portrayal of choice would still be Ramin’s more aggravated, menacing Erik (the growl in his voice at times, the screaming, the forcefulness at times like when he practically chokes the life out of Christine in the final lair) I live for that shit. Reminds us the Phantom is still, in fact, a threatening figure with a bit of an unhinged side to him.
Thank you for putting all this together! I love all of them, 'cause I like when things are dynamic. I like the idea that every one of them has his version of the Phantom/Christine/Raoul. I love a scene that is missing: Earl Carpenter's Phantom after Christine's kiss: She touches his face, then he also does so. It seems that he suddently remember the way he looks. Almost as he had forgotten it during the miss. The idea: no mask-a different Charakter (animal) is something really cool, then if should be suddenly naked before other people we also would act differently. The mask is like clothes to him.
Can we take a moment to appreciate the makeup on Anthony Warlow? They seemed to have extended the makeup from just the side of his head to almost the entire top of his head as well.
Thanks for making this, super interesting, its amazing how even tho its the same dialogue, how different acting choices can really convey different unspoken meanings. One of my fave Christines is Rachel Barrell for this reason. Her voice is fine, but it's the little acting choices she makes and just the way she embodies the character that makes the believable naivety needed for this plot, well, believable, and even likable. Well you can tell i've thought about this way too much lol.
This could be a video of just Hugh since he liked to change what he did each night based on how he was feeling Another could be made of just JOJ with Gina
Aaah, these are all little things I noticed, too. We love a good nuanced performance. I might be biased because I saw him on tour, but John Cudia is easily in my top five Phantoms (and is kind of underrated, tbh, but thank you for putting him in this vid all the same!). A Phantom I would definitely recommend is Ethan Freeman. Spidery little thing of a man. Creepy in the best way.
0:18 I dont know but this scene makes me laugh =))))))))))) he's just so cute =)))) and then he is like: "Ey shut the fck up you insolent boy, she's singing!" 2:37 yes, the duck face =))))))))))))))))))))))))) he was so happy cause his dream had come true that Christine was real now for him to design her with his wedding dress =))))))))) We all know he's a genius at any form of art except cutting his hair, right? :') 3:00 I have never seen such a gentle Phantom like that, omg omg omg omg MY HEART! 3:41 if I were Christine, I swear I would be fainted because of that. Yo man, that's how you ask a girl out? 5:52 Omg this one makes my heart broken 😭😭😭😭😭 the way he looked and flinched is just... urg... not to mention in 6:03 the smoke started appear behind his back makes me think he was beginning to melt and disappear forever :'( 6:30 hey.... boy... you... when I first saw it my mother instinct woke up inside this teenage girl huhuhuhu, my boy, you deserve better!!!! 😭😭😭😭😭 7:26 I saw Anthony Warlow a lot in some comparison videos but this is the first time I has heard his voice. OMG THAT'S SO AMAZING! I have goosebumps immediately after hearing him UwU and his acting too, he's such a good Phantom for me. I always think that Erik is a man who learned everything from opera and novels so he should act dramatically like that (ya know, even the way he expressed his love to Christine with "say you share with me one love one lifetime..." was learning from Raoul @@ that's my headcanon, I mean maybe he thought using Raoul's way would make Christine love him more UwU) 10:17 that man was still afraid to touch Christine after kidnapping her, hanging her boyfriend, throwing her, yelling at her and kissing her =)))))))) 11:09 haha I remember in another video, after this part, Christine's actress who is Mauer's wife tried to reach his "that part" when she sang "When will the flames at last consume us" and smile mischievously =))))) 13:22 this is the reason why I always love Raab's Christine 😍 the way she looked at the mannequin was so innocent and even tried like it was her new toy =))))) Ohhhh and by the way I want to share you this so much!!! In the part where Raoul sing "I love herrrrr", Christine and Erik turn to him immediately at the same time =))))) Erik was like: "You say what????" and Christine was like: "Man!? Wasn't he angry enough!?". They are so cuteeeeee ruclips.net/user/clipUgkxUnfODFBcec4q0kgh3opAubbbwA5oftkn
About Christine fainting: Which Phantom first caught her gracefully and tenderly placed her on the boat? Originally, she used to just plop down indecorously unto the ground.
In the original show (in west end), the phantom would catch Christine and carry her to the boat, but every where else (like broadway) she falls down to the ground From what I’ve read, it’s because catching Christine and carrying her every night was very hard for the actors back, so it was removed to prevent injury (This is just what I know tho!)
I love these sort of videos. My favorite show ever and being able to see all these little subtleties and angles is amazing. Love seeing all of the acting choices.
I’m playing Phantom and nothing could have helped me more. I had been going through individually but this is basically a layout of my choices - this couldn’t have been easy, thank you!
I wonder how many of these details are from the director's idea or the actors'. I was in an amateur company for almost 20 years and I remember how I was used to follow my feelings in some moments. Of course I think that when music is involved this his more difficult
Earl Carpenter and John Owen Jones for me ❤❤ I saw Earl in London on March 24 2023 and he was wonderful. My first time seeing POTO was five years ago, with Ben Lewis I loved him too even though we didn’t have the best seats.
There are just too many awesome things to comment on. Gina Beck's aggressive Angel of Music!!" sobbing at Eric's feet.. Anthony warlows make up.. Gary Mayer's attempted backhand, (that honestly would've been my character reaction as well for that line)... I can go on and gush about all things Phantom 😍😍😍
We all needed it. Such a great vid. xx I like Hugh Panaro, Brad Little, Anthony Warlow, John Cudia, Peter Jöback and Michael Crawford (ofc 🖤) the most. Hugh is often considered as very psychotic, but I wouldn't agree. He's definitely crazy (because the character of Erik is), but for me that's Ramin who seems almost psychopatic and also acts far more agressive. (he's not one of my favourite Eriks truth to tell) Anthony Warlow definitely had very coherent idea on his performance. It's interesting to watch. Cudia is obviously great. Jöback the same, his queer vibe really does the job for me, it's refreshing. And the one and only Michael Crawford, he's just special. Ghastly, very vulnerable, and romantic. His voice's unique, it has this depth, operatic vibe and is extremely expressive. By looking at his acting choices you can clearly see Michael deeply empathised with Erik.
Thank you! I agree 100%, Hugh's acting is so multi-faceted, he gives Erik a much more child-like vulnerable side while also being scary when he wants to be. Also with Jöback I often see people say that he "doesn't sound like the Phantom", but I disagree- I think the "lightness" of his voice brings him the same kind of "creepy-yet-still an angel of music" kind of vibe. Michael Crawford of course is unparalleled, I wish there were more clips of him!
Thank you!! I'm currently in the process of making another one, there's some Ramin clips there! I do try to not use the 25th version though, they keep getting copyright claimed. :, )
@@lilyann168 That's why I kind of like Anthony Warlow's delivery in final lair. He sounds like he is older (no shade at the actor I think he was doing that on purpose) when he says. "This is indeed..." which makes sense because the Phantom is old enough to be Christine's father which is one of the things he use to control her.
Having seen the show more than 35 times since 1987 till 2024 with more or less 30 performers, my top 10 favorite phantoms are: Michael Crawford, Dave Willetts, Peter Karrie, John Owen Jones, Colm Wilkinson, Ramin Karimloo, Hugh Panaro, Peter Joback, Anthony Warlow and Ben Lewis. With that specific order.
If this bit of footage from the original with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman at 15:59 is this good, the whole play has to be this well-preserved, so release it to the public! LET THIS BE THE MOVIE "PHANTOM OF THE OPERA" AND TAKE GERARD BUTLER'S BLUNDER OFF THE MARKET!
The 1990 Cherik is the best I've seen he's delivered the perfect acting job but so does Gerik
This is what they call TOTAL "character freedom" folks. Everyone is going too have little subtleties that are different from each other. That Brad Little “tried my patience make your choice” moment OMG?!
check out peter karrie....growwwlinng dog lol
Holy shit, Gina Beck's delivery on "Angel of Music" at 4:37
I love Earl's interpretation at 5:53 when he thought Christine came back for him, it's so heartwrenching
Omg! Yes true to the book where he cries before he finally lets Christine good for good. This why I love theater and why people don't get how I can see the same show more than once (I saw Joseph three times, Cats 3 times and POTO twice and will see it again someday!). oh god this interpretation ks what actually hit me because OUGHH
i’m so happy someone pays attention to little things like this as much as i do- especially with hugh panaro
The first one - Erik (Hugh Panaro) to Raoul: "Shut it, squirt."
Wow
Earl’s fall to his knees was unexpected. How painful! I’ve seen most of these phantoms but that surprised me!
I like it best when Christine wants so badly to stay with poor Erik because she does love him so very much, but she just can't cause he's just too damn crazy - God love him.
Can we talk about Christine’s acting at 1:45
The best moment of passion I’ve ever seen a Christine do in that moment
100% agree. Trista Moldovan jumps off the screen as Christine compared to the others.

@@theoscout9205 They brought that back on Broadway starting with Norm Lewis.
Hugh Panero was the Phantom I saw live. He was awesome!
When Christine says goodbye to the phantom, she is saying goodbye to her father, who he has fooled her into thinking he is sent by xx

forgot how Jobeck literally LUNGES at Christine when he shrieks YOU TRY MY PATIENCE

I just might! This video I cut actors out because the video was getting so long and I didn't think anyone was gonna watch it lol!
I'd watch it if it was three hours long
Me too! Ted Keegan?
This is why you don't have to see a show once. Everyone do have their differences
I wish they would stop casting the phantom so young! He's older than Christine xx not a sex symbol that he has been turned into.

I feel the same way. It's supposed to be a power play thing, and being older goes along with that.
