refs force penn state to punt on third down

- An odd moment occurred during the Penn State vs Auburn game when the refs mixed up what down it was and mistakenly said it was fourth down while Penn State had the ball. The Nittany Lions had ran two plays since it was first down, and James Franklin went crazy when he saw that it was somehow fourth down. The refs briefly congregated, but stuck by the call on the field. Penn State was forced to punt the ball away, even though it was clearly third down. Thankfully for Penn State, they went on to defeat Auburn in a thrilling game 28-20.

If you are saying it was the right call because of the “loss of down” from intentional grounding… I urge you to reread the rules of football. With all due respect you are completely wrong if that’s what you think 😂
1st down ruled intention grounding. Psu loses that down bringing up second down. On second down short gain bringing up third down. Officials call it forth down for no apparent reason. Who could argue with that?
why did you word it like that??? lmao.
loss of down is 100% the penalty for intentional grounding. 😂🤣
the refs mistaking downs and causing a 3rd down punt? no so much.
your wording made it seem like they ruled it wrong for taking a down away.
The loss of downs is that it counts as your play . There were only 2 plays before punt. That is a loss of down. The play you just did was first down , now it's second down .. when they were 2nd and 16 the announcers even said it. Then they bring out punt team . So regardless it was 3 plays . There is no such thing as a penalty of losing a down you haven't played yet.
@@imlikemike I think it’s your reading, not his wording.

A weird time warp occurred so that this down was taken from Penn State and given to Colorado in 1990.
Haha right! In all fairness to the Colorado debacle, had the chains been showing the right downs, the coach would have called things differently, and maybe the outcome would be the same. This though, you’re not punting on 3rd down.
Aside from the 5th down how much do you know about that game? Do you realize that Missouri was penalized after it was found that they treated their field with a substance that would only work with a certain type of cleat and of course they had and CU didn't for that game because they weren't expecting to play on a cheaters field? Are you aware that that CU football team was predicated offensively completely on hard cuts wich they could never complete without falling down because of Missouri disgusting underhanded cheating tactics. And Missouri's team did not depend on that they depended on drop-back passing and straightforward runs. Not an option game. and they also were wearing appropriate please because I knew ahead of time? Did you realize that the NCAA penalized Missouri by taking two home games away from them the following year and force them to replace their entire turf?
@@gaittr did you realize that this was a joke about the loss and gain of a down?

Not trying to get into an argument but it’s pretty obvious it was a joke. I don’t even really care that Missouri cheated, it’s just funny that they got 5 plays. Also don’t bring politics into this. Colorado fans are as liberal and rude as any in college football.
I love how the announcer says second down on the throw and then doesn’t even question it when Penn State punted the next play.
Yeah, this was an announcing crew fail as well. Sometimes I feel like announcers aren't watching the game and this was a great example.

To be fair, when I’m watching a game and talking it’s easy to miss / realize 1-2 downs have already occurred. So them talking they could’ve thought they themselves just didn’t realize 3rd down had already happened (in reality though it never actually did).
ESPN wouldn't allow that kind of language in an SEC game.
You’ve seen the historic 5th down play, get ready for the amazing 4-ish down punt
This precisely happened during the MSU vs. Miami game. Fifth down.

@@atkravitz The SEC said they screwed it up.
The mechanic is that the box does not flip until the Linesman/Down Judge tells them to and they switch together. what appeared to happen here was that the box switched to two on the incompletion, then the loss of down was announced and since the box was erroneously already showing '2', the officials assumed it was the second down that was just played and switched it to third instead of keeping it at second.
A good chain crew doesn't do anything until instructed by the Down Judge/Linesman, a smart crew might preempt the ref and do things on their own and cause these sorts of issues.

Some of y’all seem surprised. A couple years back, I’d have to dig to find the specific game, Tennessee literally ran a play in which a questionable ball was ruled a catch, ran the next play and advanced the ball, had the new line of scrimmage marked ready to snap for what would be the third play. Refs call time and review then overturn the original play which is now 2 plays ago. Not a single commentator questioned it

Now imagine this game being played in the expanded playoff… in January.
This was their first B1G roadie in 90 years.
You’re kidding right? This one of the most tone deaf comments I’ve seen even with all the crappy reffing this weekend. Auburn has a new coach and a new offense, playing in hostile environment (which doesn’t hold water compared to Jordan-Hare, according to Burrow, who knows a thing or two about football), and still kept it within a score. This isn’t a B1G victory. Penn State won at home by a touchdown against an unknown probably 8-4/7-5 Auburn team in development. It was a big roadie for Auburn but if Penn State wanted to make a playoff statement early they should’ve beat Auburn by a hell of a lot more, poor calling or not. Foolish.
Oh, I’m dead serious, Skip Bayless burner account.
How is it not a B1G win? Penn State literally won.
Forget the game being a playoff statement. I never said that. My point is that the SEC is all about tough FOOTBAW but most teams refuse to go north of the Mason-Dixon (with the exception of Alabama a few years ago … once again carrying that top-heavy conference) and that they may have to at some point if the playoff expands. But you know, let’s play The Citadel in November.
And I like Joe Burrow, but he never took a snap in Happy Valley. So I’m not sure that comparison to JERDAN HERR holds water. People can argue tough environments till the cows come home, and that’s fine. But don’t defend Auburn’s nearly century-long gap here when their conference is notorious for playing “road games” at neutral sites.
That entire series of events was a cluster fuck.

That's grounding? Dunno, maybe they confused it with the balk rule or infield fly rule or something....
Should have been a penalty kick with a red card!!LOL🤣 Doesn't matter what sport it is, refs manage to be the highlight!

The refs thought it was Canadian football for a second
For those confused by what "loss of down means," usually when a flag is called, there is some sort of yard change and then the ref goes "repeat (previous) down." However, on intentional grounding, the loss of down means they cannot replay the previous down so it just goes on to the next down. Thus, it doesn't mean skip 2nd down and go to third, it means skip 1st down and go to 2nd. If you want a comparison, both are in 1st down:
Holding on the offense: 10 yard penalty, repeats 1st down
Intentional Grounding: ball is placed where the QB threw it, goes to 2nd down

If there is confusion about what down it is they should automatically have to review to make sure it is the correct down. No penalties or anything.. just the number of downs.
The worst one was Memphis when they returned a downed punt.
The punt in the Memphis game was never downed. Just touching the ball by a member of the punt team doesn't make the ball dead. The punt team has to actually posses the ball. The Memphis kid just knew the rules and made a ballsy heads up decision.
@@thereverend389 except for the fact the the referee behind the ball was waiving his hands as if the play was dead. Sorry but if a ref signals a play is dead, it's dead regardless of anything else

They weren't "forced" to punt. The refs and PSU were merely stupid for not knowing the down.
The refs saying it was fourth down when it wasn't is what forced them to punt.
@@drjekell01 If the Penn State coaches had been on the ball, there is no way they allow this to happen. They call timeout and force the refs to acknowledge their mistake. The fact that they didn't means that nobody was confident enough about what down it was to take a stand. All the offensive players immediately left the field after the false 3rd down. Everybody relies on the markers, nobody bothers counting to 4 themselves. Yes, the markers should be correct, and the people holding them up are dumbasses for not being able to do the one job they are being paid to do (seriously...count to 4 by single digits). But SOMEBODY on the offensive side of the ball should have enough of a sense of what down it is to put on the brakes in this situation.
I hate that intentional grounding rule, and I hated it years ago when it happened to Tom Brady. What a stupid rule.
Didn't Brady throw a pick on "fourth" down anyway? Or am I thinking of a different incident?
For The Brand 👍🏻
The refs thought this was a CFL game
That intentional grounding crowd was absolute sh*+
Even the defense was confused.
Play started at the 34 yd line. The 5 yd penatly (with loss of down) makes it 2nd & 15 from the 29 yd line. Is it possible this video is missing a play where Penn St lost a yard, making it 3 & 16 from their 28 yd line?
@RiverNinja20 - When I checked a couple of sites it appears this is a spot foul with no yardage assessed. The passer threw the ball at the 28 yd line (6 yds behind the snap) The penalty includes loss of down making in 2nd and 16. Looks like the officials made an error. Under high school rules I'm pretty sure they would have tacked on another 5 yds from the spot of the illegal pass.
No no no, the SEC ref's were not biased at all this game. Only reviewed every play in favor of benefiting Auburn, and never once took the time to check and see if Penn State had a first down with a big man running up the middle or what down it actually was. Just got them middle school dropouts hired down in the SEC I see.
Punting on third down is like Canadian Football. They have to PUNT on third Down unlike the US which punts on 4th Down.
Yes, except that Penn State didn't give Auburn 5 yards to field the punt.
Announcers didn’t realize the correct down either
So many calls went against Penn State it was crazy!!! Even if it wasn’t Targeting on McClain it doesn’t change the fact that penn state was gonna score on the next play anyway.
Loss of down was not updated on the down marker
damn look at that punt though
If i do like this at work, i lose my job
