In 1999, I was a black kid(still black), in an all black neighborhood, and I was the only one in the ENTIRE neighborhood listening to this.

12:44 fun fact if you ever wondered why track #1 is all those numbers, the number is a shipping code that appeared on their first CD/demo released in 1995 called “Mate, feed, kill, repeat” it was only sold locally in Iowa. They then put the number and barcode on their boiler suits along with the slipknot logo giving them their signature look with the masks on stage.

Old man here, awful gatekeeping metal elitist hipster and all that. If you met me on the street and asked me about metal I’d tell you about horribly obscure tech death grind bands or whatever. THAT BEING SAID: I was a kid in the 90s and I had the singular experience of seeing Slipknot as an OPENING band in October 1999. You can imagine my shock and bewilderment hearing this live, before they were launched into the stratosphere as the biggest metal band ever. It was raw and terrifying and from another planet. I’ll be honest, I don’t even like Iowa or anything after this from the band but I was obsessed with this album when it came out.
Fast forward several decades later, I was working in a restaurant and had the honor of waiting on the late Joey Jordison. That’s its own story but he was a very lovely humble man, may he RIP. Definitely an inspiration in my own drumming career.
Anyway, shame the “creepy songs” skipped Purity. That song got removed after the first pressing because of the story behind it, but I recommend seeking it out because it’s the “scariest “ song they’ve done-even if it’s not a true story. Tattered and Torn leads into it and the atmosphere is immaculate.

I got this album back in 99 when it came out. I was brand new in the military and I slept with music on since I was a young teenager. I would fall asleep with pantera blasting at full volume and my parents couldn’t understand how I would sleep soundly. They were cool though and would just let me do my thing. So when I was brand new at my first base after training I would sleep in my dorm room with MTV2 on and I remember being half asleep and the wait and bleed video was on so I sat up and waited until the video was over so I could see who the band was because I loved their sound. The next day I drove to the mall to grab the CD and I’ve been a fan ever since. I’ve seen them live front row like 10 times. Just saw them this past August in Massachusetts and it was this entire album pretty much.

It’s so weird hearing this album without Frail Limb Nursery and Purity. Purity was my favorite song on this album when it came out. This is the hands down best Slipknot album. Iowa gets a lot of love, but nothing can match the rawness and pure intensity of this album. You guys listen to Mudvayne’s LD50 album if you’re doing this type of music. Slipknot self titled and LD50 are both S tier albums for sure.

37 year old here. One thing that is missed about what Slipknot meant back in the 1995 - early 2000's is how little other bands sounded like this on the radio. This was like NOTHING else that had a chance to play on the radio and it was a shock every time. Wearing slipknot merch could get you suspended in school. It was just the loudest way to poke people in the eye and it was AMAZING.

They also photoshopped Chris (the long nose guy) into the cover, being the actual photo was taken in 1998 before Chris joined the band.
Edit* Also forgot to mention, the dude in the black mask on the album cover was their original guitarist Josh Brainard, and it's the only photo Josh is in. All the photos in the booklet of the album is Jim Root in Joshes mask, and later released editions of the album is where you see Jim's photoshopped purple hair on the album cover.

The puking that you’re wondering about was originally between Scissors and Eeyore. It was a clip of the initiation with all of them watching the video and you can clearly hear Chris vomit and it splashing onto the floor.
My favorite exchange from that clip is when someone says “Just think of it as pudding.” And someone else says “Don’t say that, man. I like pudding.”😂😂
By the way, Corey worked the desk at an adult video store and that’s how they got the tape for the initiation.

Not gonna lie... this video popped up on my recommendations and first glance I was like "Ah.. great, a bunch of Gen Z kids who don't know what good music is about to complain about Slipknot... Seeing y'all vibe and headbang to the same music that got me through high school... it made me smile. Especially Lil Bro vibing with it too. I was generational profiling and I apologize.. much love and respect to you. You earned a new sub.
Also two things... the dreads on Corey's mask were real. Originally he pulled his dreads through holes in the mask. Then eventually cut his dreads off and attached them to his mask after.
And yes... Corey damaged his voice while recording their second album Iowa.. the way he screams in that album was extremely unsafe. Screaming to the point where he would throw up and cough up blood. It was insane. Since then, he dialed it in and he still has a great voice to this day.

Before they broke out on radio, I got to see them at a Halloween show at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC in '99. That was brutal, fun, but brutal. I got hit with f'king trash can thrown from the balcony. But they were AWESOME live, absolute technicians, Joey was incredible in his prime, easily one of the best live drummers I ever saw perform. Corey nailed every song. They were really special during that period, I saw ton of Nu-metal era acts and they were absolutely at the top of giving you your money's worth. I would have recommended finding the original cut of this album with 'Purity', definitely recommend listening to that song on your own, it's one their best. They put on a hella show, just pure insanity and chaos the whole time.. look up some of their older live videos and u will see how nuts these guys were on stage and how they gst the crowds involved.. people werent ready for this back in 99 and when they arrived onto the scene, it was a game changer. I was 13 when that first album came out, and was hooked ever since. 38 now and still my favorite band to this day.. Iowa is badass too..super heavy.. if u liked this one u will love that one.
