Cultural trends are like tidal waves. They’re unstoppable. The people at SPAM couldn’t do anything about it. It was either change their decades-old branding or launch a huge marketing campaign to change public perception of the unique name. Neither endeavor was promising. We talked about Spam before and how its very name is still a mystery even to the most passionate fans. Now you might ask are there people whose passion is confined to canned meat? And we won’t even try to answer that since this topic is rather sensitive. If some folks have cleared a space in their hearts for a can of processed pork, who are we to judge? So without further ado, we’ll jump right into more delicious, if a bit unhealthy, secrets that lovers of ground pork should know about - the Top 10 Untold Truths of SPAM - Part 2.

- South Korea was one of the first foreign markets to open their doors and mouths to the canned pork.
- Here’s a little known fact that only very few people know about Spam. The pork and all the ingredients are cooked inside the can.
- We saw how Spam did our military men and women a great service in their time of need. And when the war was over, some of those servicemen and women decided to show their gratitude to the canned meat.
- This one was a food truck tour. Also focusing on Spam it had the derivative name SPAMERICAN!
- It’s marketing after all. So when a Broadway musical called Spamalot hit it big time, Spam decided the name was no coincidence and there was something they could do to sell a few cans of processed meat while people were talking about the musical.
- Since its inception, Spam has been surrounded by mysteries. From a name which nobody can agree on its true meaning or origins, to what became known as the mystery meat.
- Ask any food expert or dietitian about processed meat and they’ll frown and probably scold you for bringing it up. As a rule of thumb, if you want to eat healthily, then stick to food that comes from nature.
- Somewhere in this article or maybe the previous one, we mentioned that the idea for Spam came about in the 1920s.
- We mentioned before how Hawaii has turned Spam into an integral part of their indigenous culture and cuisine. But the Spam phenomenon is not specific to Hawaii alone.
- With new takes on the traditional (if Spam can really be considered all that traditional), it doesn’t look like Spam is going away anytime soon.

The ultimate survival meat in a can comes in many flavors! Love it or hate it, it will be here long after the apocalypse!
I would eat spam but the price per lb is 5 times what I can pay for fresh chicken, eggs or most cheap hams. In college ( I attended about 50 years ago) I had a teacher who was a nutritional biochemist. He warned us that, if there was a product on the shelf wit a shelf lie so long that it would outlive you; don't buy it. If molds and bacteria can't eat it, what makes you think that you can.....I'd still eat if if I could afford it. Salt and all.
I've eaten SPAM all my life and love it still. My father was a veteran but became a wealthy man after the military and I can't remember a time there was not SPAM in the house. Love it!
Just a side note BabbleTop. When my father passed away he had three cans of SPAM in his pantry. I took them and ate one each day on his birthday until they were gone.

My kids and their friends always joked and mocked me making spam meals... but they ate every bite! Later their parents would uncomfortably ask for the recipes. Just cube spam, gently sauté in a bit of bacon grease, mix into pasta or rice based veg melee . Food on table in 20 minutes, one dirty pot, dirty bowel used as serving dish, working mom happy. Not every day but Great stuff. We liked bacon flavor best.

I've eaten SPAM my whole life and really like it. That's 60 years. It goes well with anything else that is slightly bland because of its sharp taste.

It is always Spam, scrapple, French toast & pancakes, well maybe some bacon or not.
Shortly after the shutdown it was hard to get, now I buy a can a week; I don't eat it very often but I always have several cans on hand.

In the 1960s my mom ground up the spam with a hand grinder and some sweet relish with Miracle Whip. My dad brought those sandwiches to work all the time and we took spam sandwiches on family picnics.

@@BabbleTop Yes -- I did enjoy the video. I think you did a good job of balancing the story of "wholesome ingredients" with "fat and salt." (Of course, people only worry about fat and salt when they have enough to eat.) I also think you did a good job of showing the versatility of SPAM, as well as of underscoring how important it was, especially during WW II, and how important it still is in many places. So fun to watch.
Just as an fyi -- consumers may be confused about nitrates, but scientists aren't. Most of our nitrate consumption (80 percent) comes from VEGETABLES. (Look at the label for "uncured pork" and it will usually show some form of celery, which is extremely high in nitrates. So it's actually still cured.) In addition to what we consume, our bodies produce nitrites from nitrates. Nitrates and nitrites are actually necessary to health. Nitrates are even used as supplements for lowering blood pressure and enhancing exercise. However, as with so many things, it is the dose that makes the poison. One can get too much of a good thing. Nitrites can, in large enough quantities and in some people, be converted into nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic-though a bit of vitamin C keeps this conversion from occurring. (That's why people never talk against naturally occurring nitrates in vegetables -- because vegetables contain the vitamins that keep the nitrites from changing.) Research will continue, but scientists now say that consuming reasonable quantities of processed meat, and making sure you have a balanced diet, ensures that you won’t get more nitrates and nitrites than your body can handle.

Hello. I'm not big fan of processed food but I absolutely Love Span 💗 I know it's not very healthy and I try not to eat it often but I try to keep some spam at the house for something quick to eat and I will dive into trying some yummy dishes with it in the future. 👍

Ask a Vietnam Vet. We acquired quite an appetite for Spam. The Vietnamese loved it. The state dish of Hawaii is Spam and pineapple.

My father used to put Spam, onions and pickles in a meat grinder and made a delicious sandwich spread. Ate it every couple of weeks while living in Germany as a kid. Still love Spam today.

I was born and raised in Hawaii, and I love SPAM. SPAM & eggs. SPAM in Ramen. SPAM & rice. Fried SPAM. Baked SPAM as one would bake a ham with brown sugar. Microwaved SPAM. SPAM cubed in creamed potatoes. SPAM stew. It's actually very tasty!
SPAM is the perfect meat to store away in an emergency food supply. My emergency food supply has 40 Mountains House #10 size of freeze dried foods, and three cases of SPAM, as well as other canned meats. I do try to keep the SPAM supply rotated which is easy to do because I eat so much of it.

Yes, people in their 80's will tell you Spam is unhealthy...they will also tell you about eggs, coconut oil, and bacon...but WAITE...THERE'S MORE!
Servicemen returning home form WWII did bring back a taste for Spam and drove up sales. I remember in my youth Spam sandwiches and served as a side to eggs. The same for peanut butter and jelly which was on the military ration list. M&M candy production in WWII, first sold to the public a few months prior to US entering the war, was restricted to military sales only and the taste for this was also brought back.

Spare parts and mucus. When I was hospitalized for a condition, I was medicated with shots of heparin in the generic form. I sometimes was asked to self-inject in my stomach area. So I had a chance to look at the ingredients. Guess what? The main ingredient was porcine mucus.
So, I was injecting myself with pig spit.
Spare.Parts.Animal.Meat=...SPAM...🤔 I don't know what's in it, but I sure do love it. 👌🏻

Spam, a wonderful shelf stable spiced ham. Too salty but for the occasional nostalgia dish from when my mom was pinching pennies until they squealed, most certainly. Span and rice with bouillon cube gravy pops to mind. Garnish with wild onions out of the neighbor's back yard. (he rarely mowed the back yard and gleaning onion and dandelions was always a good meal stretcher)

South Koreans love Spam because it kept many of them alive during the Korean War. The Russians were not the only ones to have received a metric crap-ton of Spam from the US during WWII, the British also got boat loads, and Spam was one of the few food items not rationed in the UK during the war. Monty Python even wrote a song about it.

Salted Pork And Mucus!
Spam is a delicacy to me. I don’t eat Spam everyday but if I’m craving for it, it’s in my pantry ready for breakfast and/or lunch! It would take weeks or months to crave for it again but it’s there when I need it most. 😋😋😋 Yum!

My mom used to grind up spam in a grinder, then add hard boiled eggs and dill pickles...mix it all up with mayo...use in Sandwiches. I think a lot of baby boomers know this. One lady mentioned to me adding grated american or cheddar cheese. Yum

Puerto Rico also loves SPAM. When it got food from the mainland, it cost too much for the poor of the island. The military, which employed many many locals served the meat to the soldiers, and to them also. It became a meat they love to this day and many recipes using it exist. The same for Vienna Sausages. I'll never forget going to a buffet eatery and finding sliced Vienna Sausages and yucca (a potato like vegetable, very starchy) with sliced onions in chicken broth. I tried it and it was delicious and unexpected. I had a lot of friends when I lived down there and they all loved SPAM. I grew up eating it fried with eggs or sliced in sandwiches with lettuce and tomatoes.

I always keep a can around ,I like it fried.this old vet didn't get it in the milatary but if I did I would have started eating it sooner ,but my mom use to make it fried.

Soaked it in cold water leave it overnite in the ref to remove excess salt ..dont fry with oil just leave it in your pan until it it golden brown..scrambled or sunny side up with hot rice in tomatoes ol8ves hot sauce..its yummy ....

I went to the supermarket the other day and the only thing still on the shelves was 5 cans of spam and low carb tortillas. Spam burritos are going to be my staple until the national emergency is over with. Spam fries too.

I've tried white meat turkey SPAM. It was delicious. A group of friends in our park where we spend the winter, had a SPAM challenge. Everyone bad to make a SPAM recipe. Gotta tell you, they were pretty good! Ok, now I gave to buy some next grocery trip.

Probably a staple item for SHTF preppers. For good reason too. What I'd like to know is if it can survive repeated freezing and thawing. Wherever it's kept for storage may or may not have much if any temperature control and could be subjected to such cycles. As emergency food kept in a car during winter would be another example. Anyone?
