The new defender needs every advantage it can get. A Russian channel that tests them all spanked one with an old 2008 Grand Vitara both were on Avon AX7 and it wasn't just a slight beating, the Grand Vitara embarrassed it.
The defender is gonna be 22k pounds in a few years and 10 k repairs every year after that . The duster can be repaired with the price of the defender’s wheels….
I routinely see older RRs getting scrapped simply because the electronics problems write them off. For a Pretender trying to claim to be the most off-road capable from the brand, that's a major issue. A fault with a door handle on the Pretender could leave the vehicle stranded and unable to start, if it caused network issues. Hardly something you could trust in extreme locations unless you were a diagnostic expert with a full kit in the boot.
The Defender will cost far more especially once out of warranty, the one I have for work has had so many electronic faults in its first year God knows how it’s gonna last five years to hopefully be replaced with a Grenadier or a Toyota.

Any particular reason for driving up the hill in the first test using only 2WD in the Duster (you did say it coud use 4WD)? That said, the Duster was only narrowly beaten into 2nd place. Also consider that the Duster was on 'All Season' road tyres whereas the Defender had off-road tyres. Hardly fair to the Duster.

Can have three Dusters for the price of that Defender. Can use two for off roading, use one to pull the other out if needed, and keep one nice and clean for pottering about in on road. The change left over could be used for a nice holiday - Simples 😊
Dacia have to be admired for making such a good all round capable car for the price. I would seriously consider owning one without a doubt. Those 1.5 DCI are a hardy little unit and will undoubtedly be the far more reliable and durable car in the long term.
As cool and capable as the Defender is I struggle to accept its really worth over £80k! That said you cant get hold of them new so plenty of people seem to think they are. The Duster went everywhere the Defender did though for 60k less!
The truth is the Duster didn't fail to complete any of the challenges, had it been shod with off road tyres as the Defender had I'm sure it would of been even better in some of the tests ! plus you can buy FOUR Dusters for the price of one Defender 👍
I love the fact thet the duster gives this expensive behemoth a run for it’s money! Such a cheep car will actually be the best off-road choice to the “average” buyer.
Love my 4x2 duster bifuel. It is saving me a fortune in fuel costs and by putting a set of all weather tyres will get me through anything I’d throw at it. Compared to this video anyway! Great value for money!
I have the same as you in Iron Blue. Bought mine in October 2021 and am very happy with it. Since the fuel price hike I have been even happier (86 cts/ litre for LPG here whilst Unleaded is easily more than €2 per litre!). Being in mountainous Auvergne I’ve gone for a twin set of wheels (Standard Continental Eco-Contacts for the Summer and reinforced Goodyear Ultra Grip + for the Winter. Bonne route!
Love it, as a long time Military Off Road Driving Instructor (30+yrs) and equally long term Land Rover enthusiast, That little Dacia was excellent and I would be far more inclined to Off Road that than an 84k Land Rover, that said, I have and on the LR testing facility which is extreme. Few Off road situations require the ability of the Land rover (which is the best.....with a knowledgeable driver). Good boots on the Dacia and a knowledgeable driver would see the Dacia going almost anywhere for a keckmof a lot less money, including maint. and longevity.
thanks Mat for highlighting the weight , one day we have to safe the climate and the duster is almost 1000 kg lighter and so need less energy .the duster wins.
8:41 4WD was not active, you can figure it out just by watching the rear wheels. Maybe the driver forgot to activate it and let the car on 2WD mode or maybe it was intentional.
Nicely pointed out indeed, running on 2wd uphill and with all-seasons road tires is a major handicap that proves that "the little engine that could" rises up to the challenge and accomplishes the task.
Amazing !!! that helped me to cancel my DefenderX order and buy 2 Duster and still have some money left. I'll use that for the Holidays. Thanks for the informative video
To understand the off-road performance of the Duster better, you need to come to Romania and drive for a while on some back country roads. Besides off-road tires for the Duster, what both cars could have used is off-road drivers.

I drew the line when my rangey vogue needed towed out by vehicles that cost a few grand. Then I noticed a pattern in what they used as boat yard mules and rescue vehicles.. and the staff car park. Nothing but Japanese 4x4s not even new ones. Same as the mines in Australia they use kitted out Landcruisers for the heaviest duty work and Grand Vitaras for the lighter duty work and when they swapped the Grand Vitaras for Rangers around about 2014-1015 the Fords lasted about a 5th of the duty time as the Suzuki and Toyota. Defender had off road tyres, the Duster had normal street tyres. Makes a huge difference. It also seems as if the driver of the Duster never had the 4x4 locked, only normal 4x4. I think there should be a rematch. AT Tyres for the Duster, 4x4 locked all the time. I suspect a different result just might happen...
I’d have the Duster all day long over the Land Rover. All those electronics required for it to do well combined with their reliability track record means it will just be an expensive paper weight. Watch the TFL series where they had to go through 3 Defenders just to do their testing.
I Think I'll keep my old 110 tdi Defender - it's a 1996 with 297 000 on the clock and I know how to drive it anywhere! Nothing electronic - just driver ability. Was about to order a Grenadier, instead of a Pretender for Xmas, but I'll be buying meself a Duster instead
There should have been one final test, 10 rounds of the entire course. The reliably unreliable landrover would have broken down and only cost a few thousand to repair but the duster would have just done it without any mechanical or electronic trickery melt downs. I am a lifelong landy fan but tbf if that duster was just better looking inside and out, i would be tempted.
I'm sure the Defender would (and for the price, should) win but this test is like me wearing flip-flops in a race with Usain Bolt ! As all the comments say it's difficult to compare without like for like tyres but the Duster is very capable for the price. Well done Dacia 👍
That was a great challenge and a fantastic video, thank you - I do love car reviews for 'normal' cars - so much motor journalism is about cars the price of houses, nice to see a bit of reality creep in!
The Duster has more in common with an old Defender than the new Defender. In fact the power and torque figures are within 10hp/nm of the TDI engines found in most Defenders from the 90s
Was a bit daft having a car to car challenge where one is effectively x4 the cost of the other......however, really eye opening to see what the D7ster could handle.

An owner of a Defender had an air shock go bad and it was not covered under warranty. Price: $2,700 for the part - not including labor. The Duster is one you can grow to love while the Defender could be the one to despise as it becomes an expensive toy.
When you go off road especially on that kind of terrain speeding up is pointless and irrelevant! The Duster is the winner for me, It does pretty much everything without a fuss, and if it had proper off road tyres it would have been more impressive!
It would be nice to see the Defender vs Discovery vs Range Rover Sport in this course and see which is the best as they could all be used for off road & daily basis.
How about doing a repair comparison. How long each vehicle spends in the dealers over the next 3 years followed by cost of repairs out of warranty. Pretty much a foregone conclusion that the duster would win that hands down, more reliable and cheaper to fix, which from past history isn't very often, unlike the land rover which spends its life in the dealers/workshop.
Very impressed with the Duster - especially as its tyres were inferior to the Land Rover's for the conditions of the test. Heavy vehicles need more technology because they're far more likely to get stuck. It would be interesting to see a test, with the same tyres on both vehicles, on soft, boggy ground.
I love the look of the Defender, and if money was no object, it would be my first choice. But the Duster is amazing value for money, and would suit all but the extreme off road enthusiasts, especially with off road tyres fitted. And an ideal school run car, as it is smaller on the road than a Defender.
To be fair the Landrover Defender was always going to win and so it should at that price⚠️😲😳 But the Duster did a great job and for the price differential, came very close to the off road ability of the Defender! All the more impressive, especially when you consider the Duster was using road tyres the Defender had off road specialist tyres. Despite being both a Land Rover owner and “fan boy” you really do have to give Dacia credit for building a very capable 4ish car. They really are far more capable off road, especially with decent tyres fitted, than people give them credit for

Duster All terrain tyres v Land Rover proper off road tyres? The Most important thing on any off road test is the tyres. Id like to see the Duster with proper off roads. Not a fair test in any way actually then. Duster kills it.
The new defender needs every advantage it can get. A Russian channel that tests them all spanked one with an old 2008 Grand Vitara both were on Avon AX7 and it wasn't just a slight beating, the Grand Vitara embarrassed it.
Defender is the sort of car you dream of owning. Duster is the sort of car you end up buying. Great value for money
The Dacia Duster equipped with standard tyres performed as good as the Defender "in dry conditions " so to me the winner is the Duster hands down.
For wet conditions keep in mind that dacia is almost one tone lighter
@@gilbert7794 So far I am in no way regretting buying a 2015 Defender prior to them stopping building them! Sad to see them going this way.

The Dacia actually went everywhere the Land Rover did.
Get some good off road tyres on the Dacia and it'll be uncomfortably close for the Defender. The Duster really is a cracking little car 💪.

Another 2 points to the Dacia because it is more reliable than the Defender. It's cheaper and can do what a Defender can. That's another 2 points.
The Duster is really a great car for its price, it deserves its high selling
I’d have the Duster all day long over the Land Rover. All those electronics required for it to do well combined with their reliability track record means it will just be an expensive paper weight. Watch the TFL series where they had to go through 3 Defenders just to do their testing.
Yes, Duster is much more reliable
I Think I'll keep my old 110 tdi Defender - it's a 1996 with 297 000 on the clock and I know how to drive it anywhere! Nothing electronic - just driver ability. Was about to order a Grenadier, instead of a Pretender for Xmas, but I'll be buying meself a Duster instead
Duster with asphalt tyres.. and the rover with off-road tyres. Very fair.
Another video with the Duster. I think Matt is beginning to like the car. What's not to like about it? Best buy I 've ever made.
I'm sure the Defender would (and for the price, should) win but this test is like me wearing flip-flops in a race with Usain Bolt ! As all the comments say it's difficult to compare without like for like tyres but the Duster is very capable for the price. Well done Dacia 👍
There was a remarkable difference between the tires. I think a Duster with better profiled tires coul beat the Defender.
As a duster owner, I think they're great 👍🏻
That was a great challenge and a fantastic video, thank you - I do love car reviews for 'normal' cars - so much motor journalism is about cars the price of houses, nice to see a bit of reality creep in!
Yep. 👍
All this with the old 115hp Dci engine, road tires and the platform of a Renault Clio. Must admit was just f*****g impressed.
Maybe would have been better (and fair) to have both cars same tires. On such a terrains, the tires can make huge differences.
The Duster is impressive for his price. With decent steel under trays do protect it and a bit hight springs that car will do very well
Dacia still did good as the Defender

An owner of a Defender had an air shock go bad and it was not covered under warranty. Price: $2,700 for the part - not including labor. The Duster is one you can grow to love while the Defender could be the one to despise as it becomes an expensive toy.
Some wont admit it, but its difficult to impossible to beat the value of a Duster.
The new Defender is the best Discovery that Land Rover have made so far :)
When you go off road especially on that kind of terrain speeding up is pointless and irrelevant!
The Duster is the winner for me,
It does pretty much everything without a fuss, and if it had proper off road tyres it would have been more impressive!
It would be nice to see the Defender vs Discovery vs Range Rover Sport in this course and see which is the best as they could all be used for off road & daily basis.
The big difference between the types of tires... matters a lot in off road. Minute 1.30....8:34
Consider the Defender to be an investment in perpetual repair bills.
And using less fuel too
To be fair the Landrover Defender was always going to win and so it should at that price⚠️😲😳
But the Duster did a great job and for the price differential, came very close to the off road ability of the Defender!
All the more impressive, especially when you consider the Duster was using road tyres the Defender had off road specialist tyres.
I'm definitely considering the latest gen Duster as my next family work horse!👍
Thanks v. entertaining. I'll never do any of those tasks and if I did, it's not a race. Duster. Wins. Easy.
