Hey Devin. I'm a long-ish term Patreon sub and also the guy who talked about Twitter and 3D modeling @17:01 I wanted to go deeper and say that even though twitter is known as a hell scape, as long as a person understands what kind of value that they can provide in a short burst (educational, entertainment, artistic, etc.) they can get virality from twitter since the more people that share and interact with the valuable posts, the more people are able to engage with it (more impressions, likes, or retweets) and that boosts the chance of the post getting into the radar of very influential people and snowballing the virality. So if the post is something that has enough value for positive engagement then it can lead to virality and even sales if the target consumer is one that lives on Twitter (for VTuber clients, this is absolutely true). I'm glad that you're actually talking about this since I'm unsure if people realize that twitter virality is actually a thing. Also I know that literally no one asked, but when I look at your thumbnails (the ones where you're staring & smiling towards the viewer) I see that there is red discoloration around your lower mouth and my overactive meme brain cannot help but imagine that you've just devoured all of the pasta in your home and you're staring at the viewer as if they were a fresh unopened 15 oz can of Chef Boyardee Beef Ravioli. The funny part is that I'm unsure if that's even a bad thing because I see many people commenting on the smile so it might be catching people's attention lol. All jokes aside, keep up what you're doing. Massive value.
Are there any examples that you can give me where positive engagement did go viral on TwitterX? I used to use Twitter to some success even with campaigns going viral on the publishing end it really wasn't the best use of resources compared to Facebook or IG for example
@@brians3504 Long twitter threads that teach a skill(s), insightful advice on a popular topic that is backed with personal and/or professional experience, and other written and short form media that respects the readers time and is valuable in some way. Love that you broke this down. I intuitively made similar evaluations, and decided to focus on your S and A tier platforms (thank god). At least I have confirmation now. Valuable content. Much appreciated!
Asmongold was super smart about Reddit usage - he advertised his RUclips videos there to kickstart them really far (video guides mostly) back in 2016. He didn't start there, but it helped him a lot.
Devin I know it's niche, but I would love a video on brainstorming some kind of advertising opportunity on 4chan. It doesn't have to be a real product, it's just something novel and I would love to see you take up the challenge. It would be good content.
Hi Devin, Discord (34:54) does have terrible discoverability worse than maybe twitch because there is zero opportunity to be discovered unless you hit 1000 members and apply for discovery. Its taken me a long time to grow about 3 years now to 720 members but i have learned alot about the platform. I exchanged live streaming on Twitch to focus on community building on discord to funnel to my other platforms. Ive created an experience on Discord people can get nowhere else i have almost if not more than 10K hours learning the platform. Memberships with 90/10 splits were introduced in the middle of my journey and now i have more subscribers at $25 a month than $5. Its been a grind and i dont feel like discord embraces the "small creator" but focuses on "small friend groups" and bigger creators. Im probably one of the biggest communities thats been built without a social media presence or live streaming presence.
Sligthly disagree with Devin putting Messenger so far above Whatsapp. I feel like they should be on the same level, or maybe have Whatsapp be slightly higher for functionalities. Both are simple messenger systems that only have a limited userbase, which depends entirely on geographic location. Practically no one uses Messenger in Europe or South America. Almost no one uses Whatsapp in North America
I feel like starting around 20 minutes the scope got sort of crazy and sort of diluted the value. I'd be curious to see your thoughts and separate lists for creators to grow, creators to monetize, local businesses, large businesses, advertisers, etc.
Only at the start, I don’t see them in the list but the list looks so outdated, no Rumble, Patreon, Mastadon, Kick, Bluesky, Locals, D-Live, Trovo seems crazy in 2024
In 1 month of posting on a new YT music channel (and via 1 Landr upload/form the same tracks go out to a few dozen other music/audio platforms/stores) YT is 99%+ of the 20K views, 2nd place is Spotify with 0% that is shared with tidal, itunes, tiktokmusic etc. I've tried Soundcloud in the past on a different channel and YT still had about a 200:1 higher view ratio, soundcloud getting around 20 views vs 2000 YT in the same time period of 3ish months. There were more bot scam/product comments than the 20 views on soundcloud too. Soundcloud also makes users pay monthly to have features you need to upload the tracks there. Soundcloud is not worth focusing on unless you spend more time promoting the channel than actually writing/recording or possibly if you can do cover songs and catch some success from that, which is also good for rappers etc that just buy backing tracks to rap over since the time investment of having to write and record every instrument individually - you can put out tracks near daily. The next best S or A tier would be places like Facebook etc that have dedicated groups for specific genres if you don't mind the shamelessness of self-promoting cringe. Since it's like that smaller circle of sub 250K impressions you previously mentioned, which will be more positive/receptive/welcoming of new content. If you have enough money to pay for that kind of promotion across platforms it's a no-brainer. One commenter of mine from YT said they'd posted it in some groups, so YT is still just the overall best for time efficiency if you only have time to write and record and little to no time to spend self-promoting since people can discover content on YT and then some of those might post it to discord/FB etc. music enjoyer groups themselves. For me personally, I'm solely focused on just writing/recording and putting content out consistently for a year before thinking about any promotion/advertising of the channel.
Devin sleeping big time on Whatsapp. How did u make the whole speech about texting when you can do literally the same in Whatsapp and MORE. You can have business accounts there where you display your working schedule, your days off, have chatbots, set up appointments, you can upload stories so people can see what your business is up to, etc. Actually Devin's response to Whatsapp is what I would've thought of sms before this video LOOL
Love you man, and your content, unfortunately this whole video comes off as anecdotal-you don’t show the proof. This would work better as a prepared presentation, instead of stream of consciousness talk. Would encourage you to show the data, case studies, creator/business personas, use case, and engage consistency in your evaluative methodology-i.e. advertising, vs attention, vs content, vs conversion, vs brand, vs building/running a business etc. Feel that’s the value that needs to be brought to this conversation. Think I’ll do a write up on this for small, medium, and larger businesses/creators.
Hey Devin. Kik is basically a dead platform that was established a decade ago that is mainly used by drug dealers and prostitutes. Meanwhile, Kick is the new Twitch competitor live streaming platform that seems to have attracted some content creators and interest. You put the first one on this tier list (the dead platform) but not the second one (the new and somewhat competitive livestreaming platform). I'd recommend putting a comment at the top or edit the video to include the Kick livestreaming platform.
I'm not going to pin a comment because people didn't watch the video I said multiple times that the social tier list didn't have the proper "Kick" logo so we used the "Kik" one since that platform is dead anyway.
@devinnash I didn't hear that in the video (so if you've got a timestamp, link it), but also if you want to go by that logic your 'honorable mentions' would be candidates as social media competitors, as there weren't logos for those either. Either way, the way that you spoke about 'Kik' in this video sounds like you're referring to the old platform and not the new livestreaming platform. To be honest, it sounds like you're partial to RUclips over Twitch and Kick as far as livestreaming goes, and that's fine as I am too, but there's better ways to market that bias rather than going about it in an ostensibly shady, or at the very least, confusing way, when you use a different company's logo and then speak about the company as if it was the old company and not the new company, which share the same name but are two different social media companies with 2 different functions run by 2 different people at 2 different points in time.
