Hey! I resonated with your take (or rather as much as I could see from it in the video, looks like the discord channel you posted to is unavailable to me). Wanted to share a few thoughts. I feel like the relentless pursuit of attention at all costs is making us dumber, less attentive thoughtful and trusting and various other things. I guess in large part that's because I feel it myself, and I reason that others feel the same, and maybe many do. Devin's point that the strategy is less important than content and results assumes a set of values he brings to the table. Your values are different, and you appear to practice the notion of "be the change you want to see in the world" when it comes to how you present your content, I love your stuff, I keep referring back to it. You make stupid good guides and put out amazing information with otherworldly production value. And if you went the clickbait route I wouldn't love it, but your content is king. It's simply too good to pass up, and so I imagine you wouldn't lose many content-focused viewers if you were to go down that path. I'm actually really proud of what you've achieved without resorting to clickbaity bullshit. It was disheartening to me to not hear Devin reflecting on the damage of marketing strategies, as if it's either not there or it doesn't matter. Even if the damage was there, it'd be very hard to quantify. But you appear to believe it's there to a meaningful extent, seemingly much because of your own experience with how you relate to vague clickbait. You're not alone in your feeling, and just because something is hard to quantify does not mean it doesn't exist. Ultimately though, I'm not the one relying on RUclips for my income, so it's easy for me to tell you to align with your values and treat outcomes as secondary. From an understanding of how this world works, and my trust in you as a creator of good content, going the clickbait route is a very understandable choice. I also quickly forget about the thumbnail and title once I'm done with a great video, regardless of what they were. I know I'm a little all over the place, hope you got something out of it anyway.
At 8:40 I audibly said "Holy shit, okay" because I realized that I've been actively taking away possibilities from myself by getting lost in "the meta" of it. Needed to hear that. Thank you
I love this take, great insights after participating on the chat in question. The quest to retain a beginners mind is one of the hardest parts of growing in a field. It’s easy to start feeling like you know the best answer and become blind to opportunities.
And actually the title here is geniuesly to his point. "Why you're bad at marketing probably". It's calling his audience out and saying we are bad at marketing when that all we really do or at least that what we watch him for. It insulting us and making us think, "Hey! Devin Nash said I'm bad at marketing. Why would he say that? I think I'm pretty good/ I think I'm not that bad." Then you precede to click on the video to find out why Devin Nash is saying you're bad. This is a clickbate title, and it is a classic marketing move. And you all clicked on it. Straight to his point.
I haven't read any of the YT comments, but the very act of putting this video out on YT is exactly what Devin Nash was preaching here. I could be wrong, be it came off to me that you're putting your money where your mouth is.
So if I'm probably bad at marketing, I should probably use more clickbait - got it! Okay, so I'm being facetious. But really it's only click-BAIT if you don't deliver the value or the goods that people expected, right? Or would you outright lie and deceive people into clicking a video that they might not be interested in if it delivered SOME value, even if it wasn't the value that they were expecting? I feel like I'm missing a lot here.
Devin what you talk about in this video assumes the people want to have success in marketing no matter the costs, although many would indeed rather fail than use every tactic they have available. The thing I dislike about Buddhism is this attachment stuff, I would rather be attached and suffer the consequences, than feel apathy. Apathy for me is way worse than sadness or even depression.
I think authenticity is underrated in modern content creation. At the end of the day, degenerate titles and thumbnails will definitely improve the performance-metrics (views) of videos short-term, but a portion of your audience will find it off-putting. Performance-metrics does not tell the full story. You should ask yourself how important growth is for you, and whether or not it should come at the cost of your integrity. Ask yourself what kind of content creator you want to be and how you want fans to perceive your content.
man its crazy, not saying I give great advice , but i have given people advice and they explode with success. I just cant seem to take my own advice , or even when i do it just doesnt work for me. oof. this video touched me DEEP
Thumbnail for this one is actually great. There is more to the second Zen Story. Alan Watts had told his friend he didn't need to go to japan, get a visa and learn zen. The day he finds the bullfrog time is almost up he has like 1 month left before he goes home. Watts was saying after that his friend felt that moment of Satori when he had to surrender. At which point the master accepts the answer and says well done you have achieved the first level, but you are still undisciplined and your mind will lose this lesson. It will take a long time to master. Of course thats the trick and the real lesson. Cant you get hooked into technique by another name. Or can you return to beginners mind.
I like how Devin ended it with "I don't think this video would do good on youtube" which ironic, BUT he ultimately did post it here. He caught himself. Very well done.
Love how you leaned into the beginners mind on this and posted it to RUclips despite thinking it will do poorly. I really enjoyed this video and I'm glad it came to RUclips because I probably wouldn't have seen it otherwise.
I think the reason people often feel this way about certain kinds of marketing is because there's a lot of really effective marketing out there being used to push risky endeavors that people don't understand. Especially when it comes to people taking on risk, I believe you have a moral obligation to help your audience understand the risks involved. The problem is that such education often conflicts with effective marketing. People respond to get rich quick, and they don't respond to the education that really helps them understand the risks. So we get all these people that float to the top that are just absolute frauds.
I think that this was what the people calling some types of marketing "bad" were trying to say. Bad in the moral sense, in the implications it has on people's behaviour, how you cheat some people to make them do something. It's not bad in the sense "it doesn't work, it's inefficient" it's bad in the moral sense. And seeing the zen / Buddhist philosophy to justify marketing and some practices deceiving people (even if it's for their own benefit" feels weird in my opinion.
Wow. This was Patreon content and you brought it here, thank you so much Devin! I knew I vibed a lot with your vibe because I follow Buddhist teachings as well. Thanks for being so transparent with your ways and mindset
This video might not do well on RUclips but you convinced me and probably other people to join your patreon because of this content, it is fire, very insightful and motivational, you're awesome Devin
This was really an eye opening video for me, the "dark wizard in a basement" comment made me realize I should just start "doing" instead of only "consuming". Thank you mister Nash for another great video!
Think you hit the nail on the head on the 'ppl spend so much time consuming practice knowledge, but the consumption gets in the way of the actual Creating' - I've been guilty of this far too often.
I've been a struggling indie developer for almost 10 years and yes, I've definitely fallen foul to some of the things you've mentioned here (e.g. reddit, kotaku comments). I've now pivoted and am on a path building tools and educational resources to help others improve their video game marketing campaigns and promotions. I'm learning one hell of a lot, and feeding everything into this new beast. Incredibly exciting times. Really appreciate the talk Devin - I've not even seen your 'main' channel. Thank you so much!
🤔 I'm thinking this mentality of "good marketing" vs "bad marketing" stems from the mentality of "I must hate this because it's popular/mainstream". Marketing is a tool, and as long as you are showing what the title says (even if you play up the hype factor) you are being genuine. Also, it's curious how people see how effective a "clickbait" title can be, but willingly chose not to do it just because. I'm really liking the marketing videos Devin, keep it up!
I'm afraid you might be mistaken. Clickbait got its bad rep from being *misleading.* Using overly sexualized images for example when the content is 90% something else. That example was really common with Twitch clip compilations. It's basically the tabloid magazines in video form. In a more general sense "bad marketing" is when the desire to provide value is lower than the desire to sell. This takes the form of cheap tricks that appeal to your most basic instincts to make *them* decide and hijack the more sensible decisions. That would include the overuse of the color red, designed scarcity (underproducing in order to artificially inflate value), Pressure mechanics (time, those ticking timers on sales for websites, or social, 9/10 Dentists reccomend), battering you with messages for you to always think of that brand/product (notifications, mailing lists) etc. The mainstream availability of "bad marketing" is the consequence of it being so easy to implement. Being mainstream is far from bad, on the contrary.
@@JdotCarver I'm curious on what you think is Devin's message here. I'm not into marketing or anything, I just like learning, but from this video, it doesn't seem like he addressed the misleading type of marketing. Even the Discord message he brought up, the person was talking about made-up stories to sell tea, and it's kinda bad on my book to market things that aren't real. I don't think Devin talked about it. His message seemed more about, people getting too caught up in the tools used for marketing, instead of the results of it. But maybe I'm wrong and I missed something.
Fear of failure holds many back, myself included. Being that futuristic is my #1 (Clifton) strength I love to sit and strategize. I'll definitely starting taking a beginner's mindset about things and just jump.
The problem is commenters in profession/hobby categories fall into two categories. People new who want to listen and losers who act like they know everything. That's all you'll see. I used to write for a well known photography blog, I would talk about marketing, and all the comments were about how they hated Instagram and how dumb influencers were... The people who are applying the knowledge directly rarely will be in the comment section. The people actually working and doing these tactics are rarely in comment sections. They aren't going to watch what they know. They're going to be working and using their free time to do other things. So you're left with people who want to be working, and people who think they're at the top, but they're just losers who think they know everything and they're a lost cause. You're left with two groups who know nothing making 95% of the comments. I work in photography. I never watch anything on photography. If I watch videos on learning something new, it's in video and coloring because that's what I want to get better at. And in those comment sections, it's the same stupid thing. It's just people who know nothing complaining.
I swear bro… this has been something I’ve been fighting. Getting stuck by looking at others and saying “I wanna be trend strategy” where it’s all evergreen. But my best results is seo. Otherwise my recommended click through is so low. I should be just doing seo, because it works and maybe one day grow something separate
Beginner's luck is a real thing for exactly this reason. But I also do feel like luck, genuine luck, is a huge X-Factor in getting a bigger presence online. More so every day.
Watch a lot of your videos. Don't usually comment on them. But, just really really wanted to thank you for backing around and putting this one on youtube. I have friends that absolutely need to hear this message that I will be sharing this with.
this one of the most important videos i've seen since i started. coming from sales, the insight into the philosophy of the sale was always so important to me. to see it delivered in such a potent yet relaxed disposition, really showed how valuable these golden nuggets of information actually are. Im going to try to keep my mind fresh each time i make something in this world.
This describes where Im at perfectly. The most growth I had was when I knew nothing of these topics. I halted my own growth by stopping my beginners mindset. I became hyper focused on strategy and trying to understand the meta and stopped putting out content. I've realized over the last 3 or so week that its mix of both, keep creating content and mix in the strategy, it HAS to be a balance of both. This video came at the perfect time for where I am in my content creation journey.
I love the tie in with a more spiritual approach to marketing with this one. I still can't wait to see that Facebook gaming video but this should hold me over until then. Really gives me alot to think about
Thank you for posting this to your main channel anyways Devin. These videos might not get as many views but damn do they provide alot of value to those who watch them. Seriously Devin, thank you for doing what you do. Stumbling upon your channel via a juicy title only to later find the real gold mines as been one of the most positive driving forces in my life. Not only do I get value from the content you make but I found Tim Ferris, Ethan Evans, Dr. K and a whole lot of book suggestions through you. Put something out there in the world every day, huh? The antidote for all us dark wizards out there. Have some courage and actually stand behind your work.
Devin.... you are the GOAT.... you are my #1 guy when it comes to Networking, Advertising, Marketing, Streaming, Online Influence, etc..... and i watch your videos all the way through... keep the content coming my guy!!!
Really glad you decided to post this on RUclips. I like the comparison to Zen a lot, and a lot of the things you say in this video remind me of my own spiritual efforts to calm my mind and embrace the current moment without giant waves of negative thoughts taking me into a place I can't easily recover from. There are a lot of times where I feel like I'm "getting lost in the method" of practicing meditation, but forget the key part of meditation is to exist in the present so my mind and body can do what they do best. There's a reason why I feel recharged after sitting and meditating, and it's because all of the worries and other errata aren't as present as they normally are, and that's what matters. The breathing technique, the yoga pose, the whatever DOESN'T MATTER as much as the goal, which is getting myself to a more idea state of existence. I also like how compare it to being a "mercenary" and that really we're all just out here for ourselves. I just hope I can do enough to break free of that ephereal realm you speak of, because I am doing my damndest to carve something for myself in this world. Thank you again for another great video.
I know people probably aren't as interested in this stuff but I liked this video, and I'm glad you uploaded it. I find marketing seems to be the thing that most content creators have issues with, but its really very interesting.
what i really took from this is when it comes to marketing is that your mindset should be like water, don't be static and test the results of what you do every outcome is an experience
Yo I am so glad you posted this on RUclips. What a good ass talk. I have recently started looking into past/spiritual to help me overcome my fears. But it's like you said just have to practice it daily to get better. I have been stuck in my own mind for too long and want to convert a lot of into action. Keep up the good work.
This is what happens when people set 'optimal' as the goal. Truthfully, 'optimal' doesn't exist; you and everything you do are constant works in progress. That's why people who chase the optimal (and they may do this without realizing) will never do anything. Or they won't do it long enough to get successful, unless they're ridiculously lucky. "I will do this and optimize it as I go" is such a better statement than "I will do this optimally".
Holy cow. I love that you study Zen! I studied it in on my own, in college, and I love it so much. It has brought me so much clarity and peace. Also laughs, too. Many many laughs. you've helped me with getting my channel started. I'm very grateful to your content. Thanks!
This is like the red pill for every marketer to open their eyes and see the world on the way it really is. Love your content Devin, you were the reason for me to start my journey on marketing since day one, I would buy your audible book in a heart beat ;)))) please make one!
Great stuff devin, the beginning of the mastermind chat thingy explains the reason why I made a no BS guide in relation to growing on twitch, because people make those bs guide all the time, and I was so sick of it, because what they said didn't work. It seems to rather be a easy "growth" scheme to get into, baiscly growing from telling other people how to grow, and then they acutally doesn't.
I would be pissed if I subscribed to the Patreon for THIS!!! Once again nothing here useful. I think this guys professional tone is what makes us think he'll say something useful. I mostly subscribe because he is a hater that motivates me. People who tell me "you'll never make it" fuel my drive. This guy is a pro at that! Lets just face it; we're all desperate for information to make us better content creators. These types of people become successful off of that thirst.
Dammit, I didn't even come here for this video, I came for another devin nash video but I cannot possibly skip his videos hahaha. Super interesting to hear the openness as well, it's refreshing.
I've been really trying to push myself to doing things that make me nervous. Not sure if that will lead to significant success but it feels good to do once it's done and It can't hurt.
💖This is very good, because in all the study that I was doing. I realized that lately been lost and stress in trying to complete every single little technique. So it's nice in this video you talk about using things as tools, and try to to expand... through possibly some unique things or just stepping out of a box for a second to see how it does. While I don't get things out everyday about twice a week i get stuff out. I agree it is important to just get out there and do it.
This is my favorite video you’ve made, it was very motivational and helped me reconnect with the fun and joy of content creation. The spiritual component is so awesome
I really liked this one, the more relaxed feel made it easier for me to process the ingormation. But ofc, like you said, just because I like these vibes more in a video doesn't mean that's the optimal way of makinf them growth wise etc.
I think you may have helped identify one of the major things that has helped me in my probably ill conceived foray into the content creation industry as a behind the scenes "helper". I basically knew jack coming into it all 2ish years ago, to the extreme of having mostly ignored social media entirely for the previous 9 years. It's frequently thrown in my face as a fatal flaw as to why I can't possibly have anything of value to share (Usually by people i've never offered to help ironically). Maybe the newb perspective can have it's uses :)
Although I felt like I understood the message in the first video, I like how this gave more clarification & helped me develop an even better understanding on the topic. Great job!
I've been a fan of your videos for a long time, but this was the one that convinced me to sign up for the Patreon. You have really revealed here an issue I've been struggling with without even knowing it, and if that isn't worth becoming a Patron, I don't know what is.
You CAN do this on RUclips. You are reaching a much more varied audience here. I've suggested to several people that they check out your content, referring them to particular videos that have struck particular chords, and only a few were Twitch viewers. You have a much wider reach and far greater potential than the single demographic that Twitch can offer you.
Thank you for putting this out on RUclips, I found it by chance and I feel it’s great advice. So I just want to say thank you for that and keep up the hard work!
Technically, RUclips comments are ephermeral. I don't expect anyone to read my own, but it can be fun to post for the sake of it (and if it creates discussion, that's great too!) The last few minutes were very insightful. Adding this to my Dark Wizard knowledge.
Oh hey, that's me
Hey! I resonated with your take (or rather as much as I could see from it in the video, looks like the discord channel you posted to is unavailable to me).

WTF this thumbnail dude lmao , its so funny
Good take devin. Loving the chill vibe and book 📖 quotes
Bottom line there isn't a right way to do thumbnails or titles. Follow what works & go all out 😉
Thanks for releasing it on youtube also!
I know people probably aren't as interested in this stuff but I liked this video, and I'm glad you uploaded it. I find marketing seems to be the thing that most content creators have issues with, but its really very interesting.
"Might go to RUclips but I doubt it"
>DOUBT
Here before 1m views
what i really took from this is when it comes to marketing is that your mindset should be like water, don't be static and test the results of what you do every outcome is an experience
Please continue to make content similar to this. I get so much value out of these videos.
This 'bout to make me buy your patreon. I love videos like this. Always watch in full.
I love how you go on about Buddhism and immediately have a commercial in the first sentence talking about it.
More of this on the main channel please I'm here for it! Watched all the way.
there is a lot of value from this video that i honestly didn't expect to take away.
Thank you so much Devin, been watching you since 2019 and this video here hit me deep.
As a Wise Man Once Said : “If you don’t got no sauce then you’re lost.. but you can also get lost in the Sauce” -Gucci Mane
Dude this was really genuine and encouraging thank you.
Marketing…. Excellent I suck at it…. Let’s go Devin
The art of creating a sticky customer is omnidirectional without the contrast of good vs evil.
Love the Zen points. Your content has been very helpful to me for years... Cheers!
I just realised I got trolled by this title.
This is my favorite video you’ve made, it was very motivational and helped me reconnect with the fun and joy of content creation. The spiritual component is so awesome
Well this was the video everyone needed today. Thanks for popping it on your main channel.
Love these chats, thank you. I enjoy thinking about how these talks can apply to art and creative work.
"Keep a beginner's mind." HUGE
Although I felt like I understood the message in the first video, I like how this gave more clarification & helped me develop an even better understanding on the topic. Great job!
Devin Nash: This is a patreon video. It might go to youtube but I doubt it.
Narrator: Little did he know...
Thanks for posting this! Great as always.
I've been a fan of your videos for a long time, but this was the one that convinced me to sign up for the Patreon. You have really revealed here an issue I've been struggling with without even knowing it, and if that isn't worth becoming a Patron, I don't know what is.
Unmatched value as always, Devin. Not just for marketing but for life. Gracias Professor.
Holy shit dude I'm super into zen as well. Awesome.
literally best channel on youtube. thank you for inspiring me to quit streaming and focus on youtube
I haven't spent (much) time learning marketing or promotion because I feel like I need to improve the quality of my content first
Always a great day when Devin Nash uploads 👌
Hey Devin, just wanted to say thanks for the content that you put out. Have a great day.
Not a 20 minute video? How am I supposed to be in the 20 minute gang?
glad you brought this to RUclips. I know what to do now to grow my brand.
I'm sorry you won't get the views this deserves, but thanks so much for posting her on YT!!
You are a mercenary. Quite the eye opener for me that's starting to get into content creation.
Thank you for posting this one on yt as well
Thank you for putting this out on RUclips, I found it by chance and I feel it’s great advice. So I just want to say thank you for that and keep up the hard work!
I love the meta of "I can't post this to youtube" and yt recommended this to me everyday until I watched it.
Something I struggle with is how good marketing and morality are often in contradiction of each other. Its a dilemma I'm working on even now
absolutely love your content. Always eye-opening and insightful with a solid splash of realness. Thank you for all you do!
A meta way to advertise the Patreon community. Excellent content from the guy who never disappoints.
Very insightful. Thank you. Taking this mindset to my music production.
Technically, RUclips comments are ephermeral. I don't expect anyone to read my own, but it can be fun to post for the sake of it (and if it creates discussion, that's great too!)
The last few minutes were very insightful. Adding this to my Dark Wizard knowledge.
Any content that makes you think in a positive way is good content 🌟🔥🌟
I'm bad at marketing but willing to learn and improve!
Dang this video was packed with wisdom for something so short. There is like an hour worth of content in 19m!!
