14 & a half minutes in, Devin talks about how broadcasters who don't like watching back their own VODs.
I was this person when I started over a year ago, & it mainly has to do with how I never liked the sound of my own voice.
I just didn't like hearing myself. What really got me out of that was a friend of mine who demanded on of my Twitch VODs from a stream I did because she wanted to edit it down (it was a 6 hour VOD that most was left on the cutting room floor of course). When she showed me the rough finish of the video & along the way it forced me to accept how I sounded so that I could provide feedback on things she was asking of me. I honestly believe that if it wasn't for her doing that, because I didn't ask her too, there is a high chance I still would not be watching my own VODs back to this day.
Now I don't watch all of my VODs after I am done broadcasting, but I do watch a few of them per weekend when I have the most downtime.

I absolutely love #5. I was sitting here waiting for something crazy but it really does help. When I first started learning how to hula hoop I recorded myself the first day I started and almost every time I practiced. Watching my videos (sometimes multiple times) helped me learn from mistakes so the next time I do the trick I know what went wrong and how to correct it. This is also a great way to track progress because with any skill there comes a time when you feel you plateau or peak (also makes for great compilation videos). I really appreciate these videos Devin, thank you for creating!

  • @Kisai_Yuki

Consistency is important for all content creation. I've seen things like online comics just completely lose their momentum after missing two updates without a "where am I?" post. For Twitch, unless you have a medical reason, it's more important to simply start the stream roughly around the same time, and if that's the case, start a pre-roll video up to 30 minutes before you actually stream the thing you want to stream so people will get the notification that your stream is starting and also bubble up on the "followed channels" on Twitch.
Quality matters as a GIGO rule. (Garbage In, Garbage Out), yes, you don't need the best hardware, but you do need reasonable hardware that won't fail on you (such as audio cutting out or buzzing from your cat having gnawed on it.) "Fix it in Post" is not a thing for a live stream as there is no Post.
Evergreen content, It's kinda strange how many twitch streamers don't even archive their streams to youtube. A recent controversy has been over "clipping" where people clip a stream, but then rip the clip from twitch and post it on youtube (or twitter) before the streamer gets to, violating the streamers 24 hour exclusivity. But on the flipside, a lot of twitch streamers are using other content creators content on their stream, thus creating a potential problem where a content creator A is denied from monetizing because content creator B took creator A's content and posted it to youtube first.
A thing I've noticed, and it's made me prefer "someone elses" stream over another's during the same time, is when some streamers get derailed emotionally. So they go from being chill, to reading the riot act at the person who made the comment. When that happens, before you know it, an entire hour has gone by and all you've done is rant about one viewer who tilted you.

I never know if it's gonna be good or bad, I overthink and I postpone because of a kinda fear. But I definitely confirm for no.5 - I did this immediately after I discovered the VODs existed and it helped a lot and still helps! No.4 also helped, but I didn't know you can hide that information only after I watched a video on RUclips. About no.7 .. I'm working on that, I guess :D. 7 in particular isn't just about livestreaming. If you consider how your presence is in a company, in the business world, in building your reputation of value and labor in an industry it's literally the same process. In the case of content creators, your entire job is the very art of creating a network which has value to others and to be as a person valuable to your audience in some manner with the networking itself being a primary component of your brand, as noted in the video, but in a business context it's the same thing, just with less emphasis on networking if you can get your work itself the necessary visibility, finding your niche, and becoming irreplaceable, unfireable, and a true fixture wherever you go.

Sometimes these videos make me feel even more lost. I was really hoping to be inspired by this video, and while it has a ton of good info, it made me feel bad. There's nothing new here. I want to compare it to those "learn to draw" books that have instructions like:
    How to draw an Owl:
    1- Draw a circle
    2- Draw guidelines
    3- Draw an owl.
I guess I just want more detailed steps. How do I draw anything? How do I draw a circle? How do I troubleshoot why my circle looks nothing like a circle?
I understand that lost between the words is the requirement for a herculean effort, hours of suffering, and endless trial and error, but still.
Let me ask you this, Devin. Is there a threshold that you would recommend giving up if you pass that threshold? If so, what is it?
Even hypothetically, can you conceive of a threshold that you would RECOMMEND to someone that they should give up, and go do something else?
I suspect that you'd say "No, I can't think of such a threshold; everyone can do it if they work hard enough and smart enough," and I'd tend to agree, but man, some days are rough.
It's especially rough because I feel like a fish, just flopping around out of the water. Sometimes it seems so clear, but heading in any direction always seems to lead to fish-flop.
I made it to 21 minutes, by the way. As someone who's been on RUclips for as long as I have, I rarely click a video that I'm not fully committed to watching the entire thing because I know how much retention time means to the algorithm; clicking "like" on a video is so second nature to me that I occasionally use it like the "play" button, hitting it before the video loads to start the video by mistake. I thumbs-up every video I watch by default, only removing it if the video didn't deliver, or changing it to a dislike if the video truly requires it; nearly always, if it warrants a dislike, I'll also report the video depending on the content.
All that to say, I still thumbs-upped the vid. I still value the things you have to say. I just wish there was something in this vid that I wasn't fully expecting to have already seen.

    • @nodtothestrange1008
      @nodtothestrange1008 3 года назад +1

I think these videos are like that because there aren't any secret tricks you can do to grow your audience. Harris Heller said being a content creator isn't like having a job where you show up each day, a manager puts you on a training course and then says well done and promotes you up a ladder with set job titles and pay grades.
We all have to find our own niche and be unique, otherwise why should anyone watch you instead of some other creator? I think that's what all those zero viewer Fortnite streamers don't understand. They're copying what they see their idols doing on their streams, resulting in millions of Twitch channels that look exactly the same. I'm sure you've figured this out and are putting a ton of effort in, I'm not trying to insult you or anything.

    • @Maru-tt6lc

I read the comment and looked through your videos afterwards and figured you have a problem on the keynote number 2. You barely have any content. You overthink too much before even producing enough output which hinders you and it shows with this comment. You also have a problem on number 7 as I cannot distinguish who you are and what you wanna be based on the videos currently posted. You seem lost and not have an identity and doesnt figured out who his demographics is. I could go on but mainly the point is you barely have any content. I could scroll down once on you channel and im already at the video posted 9 years ago

Just realized that sounded snarky but it was not supposed to be. It was genuine insight and I tend to get caught up in the logistics of things. Genuinely thank you.

I watch almost every video for the full time, the information just seems to interest me even though I don't really participate in any of the content being talked about just like to learn about random things.

Again watched the whole thing. **You did** mention #5 sometime ago in a different video, I don't remember which one.
It's not coincidence, that I enjoyed making that one specific broadcast and after watching the VOD I had only minor complaints.

The 21-minute gang also Devin. I seriously love your stuff, you make me more and more motivated with every video you put out to content create and it gives me a reason to think more openly about what I'm doing rather than "hitting the live button on OBS." Seriously, thank you!
