Growing up I listened to a lot of 60s & 70s music for a kid born in the 90s, deadhead parentslol, I'm so glad I did though, and for as long as I can remember, this song and to the last whale have captured and enraptured my little mind, they're def my favorite csn tunes, always wondered why I didn't hear them on the radio etc more, but you're right, so underrated
I got this magic live album out of the record library in 1980 it's got bonnie rait...lot of love Jackson Browne...deluge crow on the cradle..and many other great live songs
No comments at all?! This has been my favorite song for months (many years ago). Played at Kuhmuehlen nd Riepe music clubs now and then. Took me years to get this on CD. Thanks for sharing!
I didn't hear this song while I was at there, but after I got home I heard this song & it put so many things in perspective for me.The losses ,my survival, & the resolve to never forget those that "Gave ALL" & those that suffered long after or didn't get accounted for at all.God Bless all who served, their families,& especially The POW/MIA not accounted for & their families. To my brothers & sisters that made it home remember it is our memories that keep all of them alive that is why we made it home when most of us never thought we would survive that Hell!
It's truely sad to think about "all them that have died in the name of Christ." I heard this song for the first time in 1980. and that part of the lyric's has stated with me all these years I'm now 54 yrs old. And still "too many have died in the name of Christ" so sad......
Gosh what great memories this brings back! I sometimes cry for those lost years... wish I could get just a few back... a few special ones. listened to this while sailing up the Potomac River drinking Asti Spumante with a special "friend"...
ApollonianKing Quite nice to make your acquaintance Mr. King. ! :) I'm still a bit older than you, I graduated HS in 74. 5 years isn't that much ...unless you count it in dog years!
Really good version of Cathedral.Love the pics too! Brings me back to those days, when life was more Care-Free. I totally understand Graham Nash's reason for writing this song.I Love God! But it's man's interpretation of Him that bothers me.Religion starts wars, gives us too many rules that Christ Himself said in The Bible, are Impossible to follow...That's just Why He came to Save The Whole World.Just because you don't agree with The Followers Of Jesus,Doesn't make it right to Kill anyone,"In The Name Of Christ" as Graham so beautifully puts it.PEACE AND LOVE TO ALL OF YOU!
I think one of the saddest moments I experienced in my youth was when I heard Neil Young had left CSNY. That sound was gone, or at least changed. And then I heard this song. The sound had only evolved, it was not broken. Perhaps CSNY was a case of too many cooks in the kitchen. But we know Neil went off and did some of his best work as a solo, leaving us with Crosby, Stills and Nash to fill my heart with such wonderful music. Not a bad deal for anyone.
This was, according to the uploader, from the "No Nukes" concert. The credited performer is Graham Nash (according to Wikipedia). Obviously he wasn't playing all of the instruments, and singing all of the vocals in this live performance. Included in the concert were James Taylor, Carly Simon, Crosby, Stills, Springsteen & the E Street, Bonnie Raitt, Jesse Colin Young, & the Doobie Bros. etc. I would imagine that some of them were playing, and some of them were providing the backing vocals.
You're sort of right. Neil asked them to do that one song for that one particular album. I don't believe it was anything left over from the 74 studio takes. Some of which are included on CSN's box set.The original songs selected for Human Highway I believe were : See the Changes, Johnny's Garden, To the Last whale, Immigration man, Carry me, Homeward through the haze, Human Highway, & Pardon my heart. All were released on later albums.... too bad...maybe one day...?
You are spot on w/ your observation...,read an interview w/ Graham Nash talking about the inspiration for this song.He had taken some LSD & visited Winchester Cathedral...,of of the truths that soooo many people faced in the turbulent 60's&70's is that after all is said and done drugs can only lead to disillusionment/death...,a garish distortion of reality that appeared to be a higher knowledge of the world...,wisdom can only proceed from the realization of God!
Thank you Sola. I would love to do that trip too. Whatever you saw, were they just as you had imagined? That would be very interesting to know. I can just imagine being inside the cathedral, with the organ playing....Heavenly !
In fact, he never left them. It's all about a freedom to do what they want at the moment. They wanted that way. That's why we had many recordings of CSNY, CSN, CN, SY, Manassas, CPR, etc. CSNY made Deja Vu and 4-Way-Street in 1970 and then American Dream in 1988 and Looking Forward in 1999. Did Neil really left CSN?
And saddest of all is that despite all the advances we've made, and all the potential for good with them, that what seems to stand out, is that we've also learned how to more effectively destroy. Maybe destruction is hardwired into us - either others or our own ........ Still we need to strive for more, for something higher........
"CSN" has some songs from 74 but Neil wasn't ever to be a part of that album. The great CSNY record that never happened was "Human Highway" That would have been a classic. They are supposed to be releasing a box set from that 74 tour this summer. I told Nash that they should reunite & do that album & include it as a bonus in that box set. But Neil would find a way to stop it. He is so against anything that may even hint towards nostalgia. He'll most likely put some of it on HIS next box set...
Actually the S-Y album L-M-Y-R was supposed to be a CSNY project but S&Y ERASED the C&N vocals from the master tapes and went on without them. N swore he would never work with S&Y again... it wasn't until a C&N show at the Greek in 76, that S showed up and asked to comeback. {His career was floundering} They took him back and CSN AKA "the boat album" was released the next year...
I think he did...He said after the 74 tour, his CSNY days were effectively over. He was gone for 14 years and it had been 18 since Deja Vu. He NEVER wanted to be known as Neil Young of CSNY. He used CSN as a springboard for his own career. When he hit the top, he left and became solo. His song THRASHER off R.N.S tells of his CSN days. Neil is a selfish guy. He does HE wants and little else. When CSN didn't suit him, he walked. Get CSNY the visual documentary by Johny Rogan GREAT BOOK...
Yeah, He sure was and buy HIS stripes we are healed... Isa 53:3-5 You can accept God's plan of salvation or you can wish you had. I wouldn't complain. God will not be mocked. Gal 6:7 Be THANKFUL & BE HUMBLE & BE GRATEFUL He even bothered. You could have been born in the time of Noah and been in a world of hurt when that rain rain rain rain rain rain came pouring down...
The daily DOUBLE...!!!! The PROBLEM IS.... You CAN'T save yourself....! Matt 26:39 It is IMPOSSIBLE to forgive sins with out the spilling of blood Eph 1:7 Col 1:14 Heb 9:22 See Luke 17:33 Job 2:4 Matt 16:26 I can't see you living forever. so I don't get your "death" cult mentality... See Rom 5:17 on why we die...and HOW we can live...!~
Yet few realize that Christ died for all of them.... He who believes in me though he die, YET he shall LIVE...!!!!!! The FREE GIFT of SALVATION is ours for the taking.... yet, our PRIDE will keep us from attaining it... john 11:25-27 Now THAT is SAD...
And WHY did they die in the name of Christ...? John 15:18----16:2 Luke 1:16-17 Matt 10:16-23 It is the world that hates Christ, not the other way around...
I saw them. The most beautiful thing I heard
Thank you! RIP David Crosby!
Sur, magnifique. Je la connais depuis longtemps et elle m'a tout de suite interpellée!
How i wish i was born in their time when there was great music... too bad i'm a 90's kid.....
IMHO, this track is the most underrated and obscure CSN songs in there entire catalogue.

Great, Great, Great...one of the best Songs by my Age
This song in 1979 when I heard it first has never left me. I remember every word about this amazing piece of music and words.
Loved this album in my teens. Great song, great memories!
This is just so good, what a performance, what passion, it's Earth-shatteringly good
Happy to be back to the 70s that I was born ❤❤❤
One of the best songs ever written.
Fantastic song, still relevant today.
immortal song of the hippie generation
Hippie song , almost cut my hair
I wish I could go back in time and see this concert. Thank you so much for sharing
One of my favorites!

I'm 62 and I have the same feeling about that part of the song.
Well... just stop believing in Christianity. Not hard for it to effect you, unless you truly believe in what they're mocking.
@@markmuth2498 Not believing in Christianity doesn’t eliminate the harm it has caused.
@@TatersUnited nothing will...that's such a moot point.
@@markmuth2498 It was your suggestion. Read your own comments before replying to me next time.

+Katherine Goard maybe had you spent less time on your back, you would have some memories that weren't tainted with semen
Iron Feliks I'm sorry, they weren't tainted at all. And what business is it of yours what I did and when? Mind your own semen!
Katherine Goard My apologies, you're right.
+Katherine Goard I am the same way. I feel your pain. I graduated in '79.

I was watching a doc on Iraq war and in 2009 3 of US died on my birthday and it brought back having heard this song.
I love you, csny.. thanks all your songs, its meaningful
I am performing with Graham Nash on June 5 at Severance Hall in Cleveland!
Did I miss the show?
How did it go? ❤
Moving and beautiful, RIP David Crosby
God rest the awesome, infinity to the max, soul of Crosby
This song just NEVER gets old! Politically applicable, too.
Greatest song ever
Well expressed -- ditto to the Nth! Thank you. This sound makes me miss my youth.

I used to have this on 8track. the song was split in half on two separate tracks. drove me crazy
+Annie M How awful!!
I collect 8 tracks 😂

Just finished Graham Nash's book; "Wild Tales." Finished it in three days - such a good read. Lots of insight as to what was going on all those years.
Isn't it delicious?
Que buena versión, excelente...
I thinck it's the No Nukes concert version of this splendid song.
Rest in peace David 😢
Amen.

Sounds as if it were written during a psychedelic revelation session. Must have been a great trip!
Graham Nash wrote this about an LSD trip he had while on his way to Stonehenge, stopping in at Winchester Cathedral first.
Nash's voice was so great then - still really good today too but different ...listen to Cathedral off the 2013 CSN Europe tour
I'm flying in Winchester Cathedral..

The song is great musically but I always thought it gave kind of short shrift to some of the positive values that Jesus stood for.
