This was one of my sister’s favorite albums. When she came down with profound early onset dementia, I would play it for her and she would wake … comforted by having something she knew. Steve Winwood is an amazing musician and songwriter.
I work with people who have dementia so I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes music brings them back to reality when they are having a "bad day". I once had a resident that was having a "bad day" and I told him to get his guitar and play "Jack and Diane" for me. He stumbled through it but got it down then played a few more songs that eventually led to him playing "Round About" so then I started asking him questions about real life and reality and he was much better and was able to carry on a full conversation and was able to find his way back to his own room and get himself ready for bed. The power of music is unbelievable!! You know, real music. Not this stuff they call "music" nowadays.
Each genre and era has its greats: Zappa, Darude, Robert Miles, Led Z, The Allmans, CCR, Phiosh, The Dead, (remember Wishbone Ash and Phoenix?), The Foo Fighters, Lenny White and Weather report and Stanley Clark and Mr. Miles Davis, Jefferson Starship, Jerry Jeff Walker, Leon Russell, The Who, Ian and Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Linkin Park, Yes, the Stones...well, point made. Happy trails to all.
I turn 70 in 2024. This song brings back memories of 18 year old me making out with my girlfriend in my '72 Chevelle. Been married to that girl for 50 years. Great song.
The funny thing is that even back then we KNEW we were listening to musical history in the making. From Joplin, Hendrix, The Who, Elton John, Marvin Gaye, and so many others our generation was blessed...and we knew it. ✌
I can’t believe Nobody Noticed the Conga Player nevertheless Commenting on Who He Happened to Be He Is Mongo Santamaria he’s played with many Groups Santana Specially Anyway just thought I’d throw it out there being a Musician my self, can’t win them All👍🏼!!
Steve Windwood has always been one of my favorite musicians, hard to believe he was only 14 when he played and sang with the Spencer Davis Group. Talented for sure
All of us oldies. When they came out, we had 2 kids, no money and I fell in love with Winwood. Still am. In all his phases. I’m 84 this week. Want CANT FIND MY WAY HOME played at my funeral. True genius lasts. 🥰🥰 Linda84.
Imagine being 11 years old listening to Traffic in 1972. Yes And I’ve never stoped my love for these great artist. Keep in mind my eldest sister was 12 years older so I got the best of 2 generations of great music. 🥳 Rock never dies! Music speaks where words fail ❤
Its turning out that modern circuitry is so much improved that more info can be extracted from these old analogue video tapes…and then theres AI routinely extracting info like on the Beatles- Get Back film…but i agree its well done - from when Island Records were uber Fab with their budgets
What a true jam! On a dark thunderstorny evening with a stuff drink in hand and you get lost up in the stars thank you Traffic. Everytime I'm in the clouds
When you went to see bands like Traffic, you went for the music, not the theatrical crap you get now. These bands could play for hours - and sometimes did - without worrying about whether the fans were getting bored because nobody's dancing. Traffic were one of the greatest bands that ever graced a stage or made a record.
First heard this song in 1971 on late night FM in Boston. Was blown away instantly and now at almost 73 years old, I still listen to this song at least once per day. Just to get my daily Traffic Fix. Very few songs have the staying power of Low spark! Thank so very much Traffic for this gem !!!
Winwood 's piano alternatively melodic, hypnotic, then forceful, almost percussive. Delivered effortlessly. Along with his haunting voice. What a talent. Super tight drummer holds things together. And the sax. An early 70's masterpiece. This song has intrigued me since I was a kid in the 80s. Love this live version. Traffic was so rarely recorded live we are lucky to have this
from annoying precocious young howler to boring old fart (arc of a diver) he does nothing for me. Blind Faith was the only thing I can stomach and that's mostly because of Clapton.
@@docweasel If he does nothing for you, why the H are you here? This is golden, and it transports me somewhere else which is what I want and need from music.
@@leonardbreau8928 ~ Read my comment again! I was responding to dw gmail's negative comment about Steve Winwood. I happen to adore this song ~ as I said, it transports me elsewhere.
A lot of Traffic music is great quality, and will join the classics. There's not many will do that, but the 60's, 70's and 80's produced astonishing and real music that will last. We are in a musical desert now, but no matter. We had the best. Procol Harum, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Cream and the rest. We really lived.
Glad to have lived in the 1970s. I was 17 when this song was released.I am now 70 years old and I still love this song. It's an anthem for all of us who's. still jamming Peace to all
I was lucky enough to have lived during the absolute best era of music and all of my kids love all of it as well. Thank you to all of the gifted musicians like Steve Winwood for sharing your magic.😃❤️
Me too. Great innovative live music, actual musicians. Saw Traffic many times in early 70s. This song always made me cry and laugh at the lyrics. Just who were the low spark of high heeled boys? I actually knew a few, haha
I was 4 years old when they played the Civic - grew up only blocks away - so amazing that Traffic, Bowie, and others played there back in the day. I discovered traffic in my late teens (80s) and bought every album/CD available. No better set of musicians - really every album is a masterpiece and still listening to this today brings shivers. Just pure talent plain and simple. 60s and 70s were a MAGIC time for music.
And not a single guitar to be seen. That, in and of itself is a massive accomplishment. I say this AS a guitarist. This is a powerfully good composition, executed by astoundingly good musicians.
I've been listening to this song for 40 years and completely missed your obvious observation. Thank you. That, perhaps, explains why I find it so magical.
When musicians were actually allowed to do their own thing and create aural masterpieces. Experiencing a concert by them was a total trip without the acid. For those of us who lived through that era, it was a priceless experience.

55 now but raised up by older buddies who knew good music. We would hang out during our college years in our dorm rooms or apartment and jam Low Spark, Mr. Fantasy, Stevie Wonder tunes, Thin Lizzy, Rush, etc....all the while passing a skunk bud filled joint and popping a couple 5mg yellow valiums all before crashing some frat or sorority party!!! Damn, those memories will always be unforgettable!! Here's to Doug, Leo, Jimmy, Vinnie, Matt, Jennifer, and the list of friends goes on and on....Illinois State University '82-'86.....🍻

I'm 20 & I hangout with a group of stoners my age, makin em listen to music like this. They don't even know what good music sounds like I still play this.
I was a 22 year young Puerto Rican Hippie in NYC when this piece was recorded and got to admit I don’t believe I ever heard this until now. Somehow this one went under the radar I guess most of us with our LSD burnt out brains were too busy listening to The Iron Butterfly, The Stones, Hendrix, Joplin, WAR, Mandrill, Santana, Creedence, Sly, Aretha, James Brown, Joe Cocker, Jackie Wilson, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Cream, Grateful Dead, Temptations, The Supremes, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Chambers Brothers, Sam Cooke, Hall and Oates, The Righteous Brothers etc to have noticed “Traffic” but at age 74 I guess I got lucky to have discovered these guys who were a different kind of animal with a very soulful jazzy sound and that Sax player was really feeling that thing.
Well man, I dug all of them. But, I had already been indoctrinated into Bop for example. Bossa nova Samba. Mambo. All of Brazil Cuba Mexico. Cal Tjader produced a jewel of Latin music. “The Contemporary Music Of Mexico And Brazil” and a hundred other drop dead virtuoso lps’. He alone did the Latinos the greatest respect. Eddie Palmieri Poncho Sanchez Willi Bobo Mongo Santanamaria the list is so long. Herbie Mann “At the Village Gate Vol. 1 , “Night In Tunisia”, Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers”. How about Alan Hovaness, “The Magic Mountain”.
Forgot to say the reason I stopped at your comment I eyed “Puerto Rican”. No way you could get far from Latin Jazz. Anyway I am 82 yrs. And got here tonight by way of Trace Adkins singing “Wayfaring Stranger”. And yes, I had a tear in my eye.
based on what, exactly? 2 chords over and over with a weak melody and stupid lyrics. Traffic always was pretentious drivel, this was the epitome of their 'art'. Sorry, the emperor has no clothes.
Yeah had mine too. But gave it and other classic albums to a nephew who is a musician. Thought he could enjoy them. He likes the old stuff too. I’m old. Don’t need a bunch of things. I find all my old music on my phone now anyways. BUT!! He traded them all for comics!!! Ugh!!! Broke my heart. But someone is enjoying them. That’s what counts. I guess.
Stevie Winwood gave us so many great musical moments, ( 40,000 headmen, Heres a little song, Feelin Alright, Im a Man, Arc of a Diver )but he also gave us phrases to use all of our lives, ( "it wasnt that, it was the Low Spark of High-heeled Boys" and " tonights game is going to be a Shootout at the Fantasy Factory"). Thank you Mr Winwood, for help us to get Back i the high life again!
I feel privileged to have been in late teens and early twenties when this music was available along with first Areosmith album, Alman Brothers , Lynard Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, and so many other diverse bands and awesome music!!!!
All great bands I still listen to today. Why this one is playing! I had all you had, not new, but great music is timeless. I was at the right age when metal went mainstream, plus the birth of rap, grunge, and alternative.
I agree. We were lucky. I've heard some younger folks commenting that they believed Hendrix & Led Zeppelin were overrated. I am certain these punks don't have a clue. If only they could go back in time. Haha
After not hearing this song for the past 45 years, it takes me right back to where I was hearing it for the first time. Can feel the heat of the Mediterranean Saharan sun, the breeze of the shade, the smell of hashish & the laughter of the long lost, but never forgotten friends. What a time!
San Francisco. Endlessly playing Traffic. This song defines my mid 20s sitting on the floor with friends and strangers, a smoke and listening to Low Spark. We had real music then. That sexy sax and Steves undeniable voice. The absolute best time and place to be young and alive.
It's been 50 years for me. Burned into my brain, the radio station didn't say the artist or the name of the song. Didn't know til yesterday when shon reviewed it on his channel. Early Christmas 🎁
It was the 70’s. I was in my early 30’s. Driving home one perfect early evening in springtime. Lit up. Cranked the radio up. This came on. My husband at the time was, let’s just say, not much of a “smoker”. I drove right past our driveway. Drove around until this magnificent song ended and reluctantly went home. Bought the vinyl. Of course!! Still slays me at 81!🎉
Still remember when I heard this the first time in a dorm room at college. Absolutely blew my mind and it felt like nothing I had ever heard. All these years later it sounds new and exciting.
Just to add my opinion. I graduated from H.S. on '73 - my friends & I were so into this type of performance. Don't mean to sound like an asshole... back then we went to a performance with no seats, closed our eyes and just moved to the hypnotic sounds, as one. That got lost somewhere, along with ticket prices and the very thing this song represents.
Still, LIVE versions are always so much better. I graduated in '69 and we also saw many a live concert for free, even tho very worthy of a ticket price. Ah, the golden days.
Lauren Allen Don’t despair - it still happens. Just in seemingly smaller & smaller spaces and less often but I've seen that the flame is still alive and has passed onto a younger generation.
I was thinking the same thing. He was so musically talented and he got to play with many superior musicians, kept growing. It was an even younger Steve Winwood with Blind Faith, whose version of 'Can't Find My Way Home' just still stops me in my tracks. It really is amazing!
I remember hearing the line, "If you had just a minute to breathe and they granted you one final wish Would you ask for something like another chance?" when I was only ten years old and even then a chill went down my spine. I wondered then, as I wonder now, is there even such a thing as a final wish? Or better yet, another chance?
I happened to read an article recently about a number of people and their final words before death, including several who were executed. One of them (whose name escapes me) was about to be shot by firing squad, and was asked if had a last wish. His response: "A bulletproof vest"...
***** Great Comment Scott , as you said we were jammed between wars and technology was about to bust out. It's funny but I still spend the occasional time with my Mate from then, only now we listen to Chill Step and Indie. : )

The 70's & 80's had the best music. Even though I do not want to be my age, I can't imagine living through any other decades. These were the BEST ever & I'm so glad I got to experience them both
as i grow older and peer back on my life with all of the heartbreaks and disappointments that were a part of it, it is music, music like this that relieves the pain.
I hope you masked up and got the vaccine, we don't need to lose any Traffic fans!! Right now, the hospitals all over the country are full of the UN-vaccinated. Rock steady, baby !!
Traffic remains one of the very best bands of all time. A perfect combo of rock, jazz, lyrical elegance and high musicianship. Loved it back in the day, still love it now. Thanks for this great jam!!

Thank so very much Traffic for this gem !!!

if there was an Oscar for the most intelligent song, this one deserves it.
Now 70 years young and I can attest to the tears . I am saved by countless rolls of TP and paper towels
Traffic was so rarely recorded live we are lucky to have this
And the way he sings !!! Michael Todd yes I totally agree with you.
There’s no almost about it , the piano is first and foremost a percussion instrument
That drummer is Roger Hawkins, Swamper drummer from Muscle Shoals RIP
Plus he is a kick ass guitar player
YES!! Percussive!! My exact thought!!
The 100% definition of jazz-rock fusion. Much more brilliant than we can comprehend...
Absolute perfection.
Stevie Winwood has one of the most incredible voices of the rock era. It’s amazing to track his progression from The Spencer Davis Group.
from annoying precocious young howler to boring old fart (arc of a diver) he does nothing for me. Blind Faith was the only thing I can stomach and that's mostly because of Clapton.

It's been 50 years for me. Burned into my brain, the radio station didn't say the artist or the name of the song. Didn't know til yesterday when shon reviewed it on his channel. Early Christmas 🎁

Cranked the radio up.
This came on. My husband at the time was, let’s just say, not much of a “smoker”. I drove right past our driveway. Drove around until this magnificent song ended and reluctantly went home. Bought the vinyl. Of course!!

I think I paid like $6.00 to see them back then
Mary Gleason "That got lost somewhere, along with ticket prices and the very thing this song represents". tears...
Still, LIVE versions are always so much better. I graduated in '69 and we also saw many a live concert for free, even tho very worthy of a ticket price. Ah, the golden days.
Yup, Mary-that's the way it was. We'll never see that again.
Lauren Allen Don’t despair - it still happens. Just in seemingly smaller & smaller spaces and less often but I've seen that the flame is still alive and has passed onto a younger generation.
Still reminded of nice times in a small town jamming to music 🎶 with friends
What's really amazing about this is that Steve Winwood is all of 24, and had already amassed an amazing career at that point.
