"I've never been to space before but..." 😅😅
Crusty ChickenMcNuggets I was gonna leave the same message then saw yours 😂👍🏼
Shin Soo Choo rocks the double flap as a non-switch hitter
Upon further investigation, he does NOT wear the double-flap anymore.
Jeff Mehnert well it’s probably not a minor league helmet it could be a major league helmet which feels great and with 2 flaps
Going to Spring Training 2011, after the Giants won the World Series, I was at a Dodgers Giants game and when they subbed out the starters with the minor league guys wearing 98 etc, they also didn't have their names on the back of the jerseys. We referred to the Dodgers guys as "Football Number Guy" when we were heckling them, as any good Giants fan does anytime the Dodgers are playing them. The right fielder did not appreciate this, and might have missed a pop up and thrown a moon ball into the cutoff man. That was like a snowball rolling downhill. Once the crowd knew it bothered him it became constant and even had chant's of "Football Guy" when he did anything.
I love these videos - you can't find this content anywhere else - thanks for letting us get a taste of the major league experience through your videos.
I love how often matt uploads . And this is a man who is busy . Some youtubers have no lives and still dont upload content
Your a great RUclipsr, I watch you every day thx for your great content
I wore the same style helmet as your MLB one in high school except double flaps. You're absolutely right on how light it is. I loved it.
That's awesome!! Thanks for watching our vids and commenting! I really appreciate it!
The minor league helmet looks like it’s about to come alive and devour you.
Haha!
Rhys Hoskins had 2 flaps and 2 jaw guards last year
that's only because of his broken jaw though
Thats rough
1st one that came to mind for me.hoskins broken jaw.
James Gilleran, i would love to play with the 2 flap helmet and have dual guards on. the amount of memes that would be made from that
Hoskins did when he broke his jaw but has since switched back to one flap with no jaw guard
Great vid! Very cool to know these things that I was very curious about as a kid!
Regarding the equipment you keep after leaving a club. Do they let you keep whatever you want? Or take it out of your check? Enjoying your vids, thanks.
Well I mean, what else are they gonna do with it?
What was the field quality like in the majors vs minors
Mighty Bossman I’d like to know the difference as well.
He actually has a video of his favorite mlb parks. Not exactly what your asking for but he dose talk about the size comparison of majors to minors I believe
Good 1 👍
I've heard some college fields are nicer than minor league fields
Jakob Fox some milb fields share with colleges. Virginia Commonwealth University shares the field with the Richmond Flying Squirrels. The Durham Bulls at one time shared their old stadium with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Your videos are truly captivating - awesome!
So close to 100k!👍👍👍
"You know I have never gone to space before..."
Haha it's true! Thanks so much for watching our videos and I appreciate you commenting!!
For some reason the matte helmets with the chin guard looks (what Yoan Moncada wears) so clean to me
Great video. They used to allow major leaguers to wear helmets with no flaps. You could tell the “old timers” who continued to wear them after the switch to the ear flap. I always thought that was cool.
I think it’s cool that there’s a physical thing on public display on your head to go with the shame of:
- Being demoted from the Majors.
- Having every one at spring training know your not permanently called up.
There’s so much tradition in baseball.
Yes it's very interesting for sure!! Thanks for watching our vids and commenting! I really appreciate it!
Shane Victorino wore a two flap helmet in the majors. I always wondered why?? Still love the videos and content brother. 🤙🏼
Very cool upload I love be this channel. This is my favorite channel on RUclips keep up the good work ☝️ ☝️
Great video bro great content
What he didn't mention was that a few years ago the MLB got new helmets. They are still not as protective as the minor league helmets but they are a little more protective.
Interesting! Haven't seen a helmet close up in a few years. Thanks for watching our vids and commenting! I really appreciate it!
You can see it on the ear flap because your ear flap had a circular hole but the new helmets have more of a oval/rectangle hole on the ear flap.
@@jesses-m MLB changed them again they’re now called Rawlings MachPro helmets I believe
Can you do a video talking about the daily grind of the game. You don't get many full free days once the season starts. A lot of fans don 't understand how much baseball you end up playing per season. It's crazy
Hi Matt great vid ,When I played a couple years ago in HS the flaps that covers your cheek aka Stanton helmet , I tried one on the other day it was horrible for me so what’s your opinion. Thanks as always
You should do a video wearing your AAA helmet, and just quote every Dark Helmet lines from Spaceballs.
Not the same as two flaps, but John Olerud wore a batting helmet in the field as well when batting.
IIRC, he started wearing a helmet (without flaps) on defence after he had a brain injury. I'd look it up, but I'm lazy.
congrats on 100k
Thanks!!! Thanks for watching our stuff and commenting!
Awesome topic , always wondered the difference
Thanks!!! Thanks for watching our vids and commenting! I really appreciate it!
Suggestion for a future video. Difference between AAA and MLB clubhouse atmosphere.
This comment might be a bit bitter sweet but the thing is: I fucking love this channel, it is all I've been watching this last week. I barely liked baseball, but i am hooked up. This is great content. But, idk Matt weirds me out a bit some times.
I was like, why is he calling them air flaps? Then i remembered hes from Boston😂.
Great video Matt! Love your insight with these topics!
Haha thanks!!
very cool vid. yea S/WB Yankees aka Railriders.I am season ticket owner.MUCH RESPECT Coach
Same
That’s the first time I’ve seen your hair lol
@MANCHESTER UNITED ok?
Shane Victorino is the like only major leaguer I can remember who opted to wear a two flap helmet
@M tbh I do like soccer
+Antonelli Baseball what’s the function of having one flap? Just for comfort and lighter feel?
it is just because it is less important because of how rare you get hit in the head but they still have to have helmets just in case. and players like bryce harper like to rip off their helmet when running so it is easier with 1 flap as well
Alex Roldan easier hear and ear flap is not that comfortable
Brett Phillips with the Rays is a left handed batter that wears the two flaps, but it definitely looks like the thick one.
As a former player i can remember being young and thinking how cool the major league helmets were with the one earflap.
Hey Matt. It is my first year of using wood bats, do you have any suggestions on a good transition bat from metal to wood.
I think I’ve seen a few AL pitchers use the double flap helmets while they were striking out looking on 3 pitches.
Haha probably right! Thanks for watching our vids and commenting!
Hi I was wondering if any chance I could get you to sign a rookie card I have from you if u can that would be awesome
Hey Matt, another great vid, just had a couple questions with the helmets and jerseys. Do they let you keep all your jerseys? Like if your traded are all your jerseys, yours to keep? They don’t reuse the helmets ever, they just let you keep them? Like what if someone was called up for like a week then sent down, they get to keep their jerseys and helmets?
Thanks!!! I got to keep one jersey at the end of the year. And I'm assuming the player would keep their helmet in that instance. I kept mine. Thanks for watching our vids and commenting! I really appreciate it!
Otis Nixon rocked the two flaps
Vids about batboys how they work if u have not talked about it already
It would probably go outta the park... Oh man that had me laughing like a banshee
I remember Gary Garyti was the last player to wear a no flap batting helmet, since he was grandfathered into (or i guess out of that rule.)
You left out a lot with the Major League helmet. There are now two newer, more protective helmets that the players have to choose from. The helmet you have is now illegal in the MLB.
Michael Curatolo that’s good as that helmet he’s showing looks really unsafe
I hated the double flaps. I always used a single flap. I bought a Major League model from ABC (they were the thing in the Majors in the 90s) and used it ever since. Still have it. Think of the MLB hitters that just wore their caps back in the 50s and before. Insane.
That's awesome!! Thanks for watching our vids and commenting! I really appreciate it!
Greets from Germany😊
So here is what bowman had to say on the back of his first bowman card:
Scouting report:
Résumé: Two-time cape cod league All-Star....set wake forest career record for walks (128)....started all 163 games demon deacons played in three years....began his pro career in eugene
Skills: terrific athlete....strong arm....good speed....could play center....great eye....held one of college baseballs best BB/K ratios....drives the ball
Up close: became the first wake forest non-pitcher ever drafted in the first round....was massachusetts prep POY in football and hockey and runner-up in baseball
Nice
That’s crazy I live near the Scranton/Wilkes barre field but now they are the railriders
Why do pitchers wear jackets on the bases? I mean I pretty much know why but it could be a decent video.
Mike372644 it’s to keep their throwing arm warm!
cuz they are pussies
T C I would hardly call someone throwing a ball for someone to hit it with a bat a pussy. They could be killed every pitch. Not to mention if a pitcher sucks, your team sucks. So they either keep you in the game or they don’t. Either way they are the most important person on your defense. Not a pussy. As real of a man as you could be.
Trent Thorton wore a jacket the other night. As a bluejays fan you dont see a lot of players hitting, let alone pitchers. I had no idea they were allowed to. Googled it and also found out a pitcher who is pinch running cannot wear a jacket
@@stephendre2902 hahaahahaaha That's your argument? They might get killed by a line drive, therefore they aren't pussies for wearing a jacket to keep their arm warm? You are a moron.
Did you happen to play for Scranton Wilkes-barre during the time they played their home games in Rochester?
Expos Classics he said he did yes
Hey Matt, Do high profile players with leverage get special treatment by the organizations? (Dione Sanders and Bo Jackson)
Rafeeq
You might remember that a first base coach was killed when a foul ball hit him on the head.
That was in a minor league game in North Little Rock , Arkansas. Ever since then coaches wear helmets in minor and MLB.
I’m pretty sure I heard that he was hit in the neck not the head
Curious why you wouldn't want two flaps on the thinner, more comfortable helmet? I was thinking about protection during base running and then you mentioned how guys put their hand up.
Nori aoki wore 2 flap after he got drilled in the ear by the catcher throwing the ball back to the pitcher
Good point!! Thanks for watching our vids and commenting! I really appreciate it!
What if ur called up from the majors from triple A in the middle of the season jus for a game or few .. does ur check for playing change at all ? Is the pay different going from triple A to MLB back and fourth during a season???
only person I can remember that wore a two flap that wasn't a switch hitter was bronson arroyo I know he was a pitcher but he is the only player that comes to mind
Shin soo choo, 2 flapper. Hilarious video. Thanks Matt!
Thanks!! And good call! Thanks for watching our vids and commenting! I really appreciate it!
MLB players haven't worn the CoolFlo helmet in years. It's been phased out by the S100P, which had the same protection as the S100 MiLB helmets but lighter.
Shin-Soo Choo is a lefty that wears a 2 flap CoolFlo helmet.
Interesting!! Thanks!!! Thanks for watching our vids and commenting! I really appreciate it!
Darth Antonelli, top kek
what about c flaps? were you able to use those when you were called up
Jed Lowrie wears two flaps I think...great video:)
because he is a switch hitter so they have both for if the chage the hand they swing with
Wow I didn't know there wasn't a difference between minor/major league helmets until I came across this video
I rember a few years ago when Adam Eaton was playing for the White Sox, in a Crosstown Classic game against the Cubs, he fouled off a pitch & it hit off his unprotected left ear.
Couldn't have felt good! lol. Thanks for watching our vids and commenting! I really appreciate it!
Look like Dark Helmet from the movie Space Balls.
Do switch hitters have one of each or do they have two-flap helmets?
And then there was the helmet that John Olerud wore in the field. I would be interested to know the difference between these and that.
(For those who didn't know, John Olerud had an aneurysm in college so he wore a helmet in the field rather than a ballcap).
Did you get to appear in any video games?
Wow bro I didn’t get the real feel for the size of the yankee helmet till u compared the both
Yeah it's crazy! Thanks for watching our vids and commenting! I really appreciate it!
What about switch hitting? Is it a useful skill or an unnecessary add-on? Why is that the case?
The minor league helmet is like judge dredd or robocop
😂😂😂😂😂😂 Or Darth Vader
Lord Shaxx or space balls
Judge Dredd 😂😂😂😂
Go to a lot of Minor League games and those helmets always remind me of Gazoo, the little martian on the Flintstones.
Hey what’s up fellas how you doin Matt Antonelli here
Shin Soo Choo used to wear two as a left handed hitter but doesn’t anymore
Are the mlb helmets sized like hats or just like large extra large etc. ?
Good video idea....not sure if you did this already but. “Do Umpires Make Up For Calls” like if they call a strike a ball will they call the next pitch a strike even if it’s a ball? Idk it’s just an idea
Mark Lemke was a right handed hitter that wore two flaps
Funny how a helmet makes you feel, right. Thanks for sharing the story!
Were the face flaps a little after your time? I've always wondered how that may feel. Maybe even provide a little more confidence to stay on some tough pitches
Yeah we didn't have them when I played. Thanks for watching our vids and commenting! I really appreciate it!
Rip James Charles lol
What’s that guy have to do w baseball lol
can you send me a all red mlb one flap helmet thats all red and a large or 7 3/8 right handed batting
I’ve never used a one flap helmet but I’ve used a helmet that was missing the pad on one side so I pretty much have
Jose peraza Cincinnati Reds does sometimes
Hey matt i have a question. I know you covered salaries before but i was wondering how a player gets paid if theyre only called up a little at a time. Like if theyre sent back, called up etc. What if a player is only called up for September?
He's covered it before: league minimum salary is $400k. There are 162 games and you divide the $400k by each game played. It translates to about $2.4k a game. So if you play 3 games and that's it, you get paid $7.8k for those 3 games.
I laughed when you said that when you get called up to a major league spring training game from minor league camp, you not only wear that humongous 2 flap helmet, but you have a number like 98 so everyone knows instantly you're a minor league guy. That's funny to me because in Jim Bouton's book "Ball Four", which I am sure you have read...if not, you need to...he wore number 56 throughout his major league career even though he was offered a lower number when he made the roster. And he explains it as "in spring training, they assign you a number, and the higher the number...the closer you are to not making the team. I still wear number 56. I am still close to not making the team." haha... You strike me, Matt, as the kind of guy who would have liked Jim Bouton.
Hoskins last year when he broke his jaw had both flaps and both jaw protection
Bake McBride was notorious for always protecting his ear anytime he was going back to the bag on pickoff throws to first base. It was kind of the "thing" he was famous for.
Very cool! Thanks so much for commenting and watching our videos!
Can you put a chain flap on the major-league helmet?
shin soo choo did for awhile but not any more
ever needed a passport when traveling to Toronto? or is it not as strict
I never got to play in Toronto. Thanks for watching!!!
U ever played against Brian Mohler or Kyle Roller Legends in NC
When did the helmet face guards come in?
I seem to remember Delino DeShields Sr. wearing a double earflap helmet, and I don't think he was a switch hitter
How awkward would you feel trying to field with that on like john olerud used to?
Haha I'd miss every ball. Thanks for watching our vids and commenting! I really appreciate it!
Never gone to space before lol!!!🤣💀
I would imagine the 1 flap started so that the players faces could b more exposed to the crowd and cameras to promote the players more. Maybe not, but seems like it could b the case.
I could be mistaken, but I’m sure I’ve seen Shin Soo Choo wear a two flapped helmet
Also, what’s the go with the attachment some have that extends from the ear flap around towards the chin?
Yes I think you are right! So that wasn't around when I was playing, but pretty sure the new helmets it can attach easily. Thanks for watching our vids and commenting! I really appreciate it!
Curious if he could weight in for the extra flap due to guys getting hit in the mouth, chin , jaw recently
I saw Alex Gordon rehab in Omaha a few times. I think he was wearing his royals helmet at the chasers game. Am I misremembering?
