    Going to Spring Training 2011, after the Giants won the World Series, I was at a Dodgers Giants game and when they subbed out the starters with the minor league guys wearing 98 etc, they also didn't have their names on the back of the jerseys. We referred to the Dodgers guys as "Football Number Guy" when we were heckling them, as any good Giants fan does anytime the Dodgers are playing them. The right fielder did not appreciate this, and might have missed a pop up and thrown a moon ball into the cutoff man. That was like a snowball rolling downhill. Once the crowd knew it bothered him it became constant and even had chant's of "Football Guy" when he did anything.

    • @baileysmith4744
      @baileysmith4744 5 лет назад

      it is just because it is less important because of how rare you get hit in the head but they still have to have helmets just in case. and players like bryce harper like to rip off their helmet when running so it is easier with 1 flap as well

    Good video idea....not sure if you did this already but. “Do Umpires Make Up For Calls” like if they call a strike a ball will they call the next pitch a strike even if it’s a ball? Idk it’s just an idea

    Were the face flaps a little after your time? I've always wondered how that may feel. Maybe even provide a little more confidence to stay on some tough pitches

    Hey matt i have a question. I know you covered salaries before but i was wondering how a player gets paid if theyre only called up a little at a time. Like if theyre sent back, called up etc. What if a player is only called up for September?

    • @justinroark88
      @justinroark88 2 года назад

      He's covered it before: league minimum salary is $400k. There are 162 games and you divide the $400k by each game played. It translates to about $2.4k a game. So if you play 3 games and that's it, you get paid $7.8k for those 3 games.

    I laughed when you said that when you get called up to a major league spring training game from minor league camp, you not only wear that humongous 2 flap helmet, but you have a number like 98 so everyone knows instantly you're a minor league guy. That's funny to me because in Jim Bouton's book "Ball Four", which I am sure you have read...if not, you need to...he wore number 56 throughout his major league career even though he was offered a lower number when he made the roster. And he explains it as "in spring training, they assign you a number, and the higher the number...the closer you are to not making the team. I still wear number 56. I am still close to not making the team." haha... You strike me, Matt, as the kind of guy who would have liked Jim Bouton.

    Hoskins last year when he broke his jaw had both flaps and both jaw protection

    Bake McBride was notorious for always protecting his ear anytime he was going back to the bag on pickoff throws to first base. It was kind of the "thing" he was famous for.

    I would imagine the 1 flap started so that the players faces could b more exposed to the crowd and cameras to promote the players more. Maybe not, but seems like it could b the case.

    I could be mistaken, but I’m sure I’ve seen Shin Soo Choo wear a two flapped helmet
    Also, what’s the go with the attachment some have that extends from the ear flap around towards the chin?
