At the same time I feel really bad for him. I bet he and so many others had huge expectations for him given where he was drafted 😪

His experience at the highest level is likely what forged his humility. I mean, his major league career was very short and underwhelming. That tends to make a person either bitter or down to earth.
@Justin Coyne I disagree about jomboy 100% he makes massive mountains out of tiny molehills in just about any given video. He panders like crazy to casuals who don’t actually watch the game.
Mark to me is the opposite of jomboy which is why I watch his videos and never jomboy.

Matt you should do a video on the 2008 Padres 25 or 40 man roster and gives us stories about some of the players you worked with. Or you could tell us something on some players that you knew but not a lot of other people have heard of like Jared Wells or Luke Carlin.

I spent many nights at California League Games in High Desert 🏜.. Saw Lake Elsinore and Rancho Cucamonga.. Along with Bakersfield ( Saw Mike Piazza hit 3 Home Runs in Single A -Game- "1 game" ) Thrill of my life! 1991 I believe it was, God Bless

Matt, you would be blown away by high school baseball in Japan. In the summer, there is a tournament of all the best high schools in each prefecture in Japan. They play the tournament in Koshien Stadium, near Osaka. It is the home stadium for the Hanshin Tigers and it is packed. 45,000 fans watching high school baseball.

You’re not giving yourself enough credit dude; just getting into Wake Forest is super, super hard... and staying there is-like the big leagues- even harder. I fought WARS just to get into Wake, and you must’ve been on some kinda roll to juggle both and succeed.

The adjustment to the organizational/public's expectations of the players is an aspect to the profession that I think separates the "big league" player and the guys with "the talent" to play the pro game most often. With yourself a large obstacle was injuries and that is a common culprit for guys who get close but don't stick. I do think you have to have a belief in self and confidence in any skill field to remain in the game and that is only multiplied outrageously by having to do it in front of thousands of people every night. Thanks for the insightful vid.

What you said about the talent difference between AA and AAA really resonated. Long story short, my cousin played 15 seasons professionally for six organizations (Brewers, Dodgers, Marlins, Mets, Indians White Sox plus time in Japan and Korea), and spent brief stints in the majors with four of those teams. He said the same thing, especially when it came to the pitchers, meaning that pitchers threw equally hard in AA and AAA but the ball placement from AAA pitchers was noticeably more skilled. Keep these videos coming!

Your comments just bring to bear just how elite the elite are. We fans sometimes take those skills for granted. But the way you laid it out, pretty much all young players see themselves in the Bigs. We faced really good players as we moved up from T ball to little league to pony or babe Ruth ball. But then the Bigs are just another level. I cannot imagine seeing the pros on TV and now playing with or against them. Just getting to step foot on the same grass. Then to think the starters are just elite level. Then the ones that are MVP caliber. Hard to get your head around it.

I wish you were able to play in an MLB playoff game, especially a World Series Game 7. You still did good though. Just hitting a homer in the Major Leagues is huge.

Yea I started playing T-ball when I was 5 years old and started pitching when I was 9 years old but during those times I played in alot of different places. So I guess by the age of 12 or 13 I thought I was good enough to play pro and so by age 13 I started playing travel ball. See I live in Georgia and here in Georgia there is this thing called East Cobb baseball and that's where I was fortunate to play with coaches who played pro or college. But East Cobb baseball is where in this state where the pro athletes come from but you play against some of the best that East Cobb could offer. But when school was out we would travel to places like Florida, Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri. At age 14 I went with a team here in Atlanta that was going to Minnesota to play in the AAU world Series. At that time you had teams from all over the country playing in this tournament but to make the long story short we came 3rd in the nation. But by the age 13 and 14 we wore the Braves uniforms you know the white uniforms that they would wear at home and the gray uniforms if they played on the road. But in highschool is where things got interesting for me because I played varsity level baseball during my time in highschool. So by the end of my junior year in highschool I went to a tryout at Emory University and there were pro scouts to I believe college scouts there as well. So they told all of us that if any team was interested in us that they would give you a call. Well I got that call and that the Florida Marlins which now is the Miami Marlins and so at that time I was being scouted by the Florida Marlins. But when they called me I think they wanted to see me pitch again but I was playing for my highschool and at that time you couldn't play for any team if you played for your highschool team. But I have been kicking myself on what could have been but I have had my moments that I could be proud of. Like making my highschool team was a huge accomplishment and one year playing at USA stadium in Memphis Tennessee. One time I had a Marlins scout who came to do a side session with me at my highschool and afterwards he told me to be careful what you wish for because you might just get it and so my thinking was that I just might make it in the pros. But it didn't happen and so if you have what it takes to make it to the major leagues then don't waste it and go for it. But after all those years baseball is still in my blood and from all of those years in playing my baseball knowledge is rich

Curious if you ever followed the value of your baseball cards back in the day? I remember when 2006 Bowman Chrome Draft Picks & Prospects came out, your autograph was one of the better ones to get. I think it was a $20-$25 card on eBay back then. As a player, it must be very interesting that your cards' value typically follows your on-field performance. It's like a stock of yourself! Must be funny to know that people desired a piece of cardboard that you wrote your name on! lol

Matt - I would be interested to know what is the difference in the BP and prep before a MLB game compared to a MiLB game? Are you expected to get to the field earlier,, do you get the same amount of swings in BP, etc.? Thanks! You are a great MLB commentator.

The pressure to win in college is greater in football and in basketball than in baseball.
Some of those fans are semi-crazy. And there are more of them in attendance and more of them watching television broadcasts.

Got a question about your approach in MLB the Show, actually. When you watch a pitcher in the game wind up, what are you watching for? When I play MLB the Show, not being from a baseball background myself, I typically react to the pitch itself, rather than what the pitcher is doing. But I noticed you commenting on the pitcher's wind up, and how funky wind ups throw you off. I know in real baseball, you're trying to time your step and your swing and all that.

For the show its also about timing but only with hitting the swing button so just watch for when the ball is released.
Yeah, that's what I do. But the way Matt comments in his videos, he's watching the whole windup and analyzing something about it, like you would with a real pitcher.
Well in real life your unconsciously deciding on the swing before the ball even leaves the pitchers hands. That's why pitchers tend to get less effective as the game goes on because guys see the windup a few times. So different windups just throw you off all of a sudden.
Hey Matt quick question, whats your opinion on how high profile players are advertised or promoted by MLB. Do you think MLB are selling their game and top players well or should they be doing more?

Can you make a video talking about what's up with the increase in injuries lately?I know baseball 162 games is a long season, and injuries happen... But what is up with certain guys who are injured all the time? The Yankees last year got injured more than a football and hockey team combined... and 1st week of spring training 4 guys injured already lolI honestly don't remember in the 90s or early 2000s a team having players injured constantly. The 90s Yankees it seemed like the same guys were in the lineup every day, today you're lucky if you get 140 games out of your all-star starter. And with pichers it's even worse.. anytime a guy is throwing 99mph it's only a matter of time.. Severino in 2017 when he was having a breakout year, I was thinking how long can he keep this up.

Might there be some more particular or narrower context in which I'm to place this unsettling notion ? It's an initially, jarring statement to this child of, apparently, a by-gone era.
Now, of course, there _are_ other "things" to consider when measuring/assessing a ballplayer's worth but you had better reside at the top of the heap in some other category i.e. facet of the game before "batting average" recedes.
"Nowadays" it seems you find there to be no shortage of dudes that can hardly hit their weight while exhibiting only adequate, mediocre, to slightly above "average"(no pun intended) skills with the glove *or* when it comes to hitting with power, or running the bases, for that matter.
So...you do like the NHL and Bruins. You acted like you didn't care about hockey before.
