Believe or not 90 % of minor league don't make to MLB so it have to be really Hard to make it.. Altuve 2 league every year when he was in the minor league and People say he cheat 🤣 dude its a beast ..shorty its bearly 4 feet too and 100 pounds 🤣 and make to MLB..foe me there its nobody like Altuve in the MLB.period.
Moral of the story, get to the majors as soon as possible !!!!

Good shit. I always like the inner workings of baseball...like a day in the life. I dated David Ortiz's niece in 1999 when he played for the Twins and got to hang out with him for a weekend. It was pretty cool to see the routine when they left for the game, what they did after the game (in this case went and ate supper at 10:30PM and had some beers....)
My cousin saved his bonus while the other minor leaguers blew it on vehicles. He was living with a random family while in the minors making minimum wage. He ended up on the Nationals roster shortly before having a career ending shoulder injury. He's glad he saved that bonus.

Fernando Tatis Jr. is making $24,285,714/year which is $66,536/day and has a 14 year contract for a grand total of 340,000,000! Every HOUR Tatis makes $2772!!!
Ohtani makes $3M/yr this year, and $8M/yr next year ...
You need to subtract the luxury tax. So from 340 mil, tatis will see around 200 mil.
@@CarlosCastro94360 yeap after all the taxes federal, state and county tax he will get around 200 millions which its a lot of money..the same when you win the power ball ..let say you win 300 millions after all the taxes you will end up getting around 160 millions ...yeap thats how its work.
And….all that money is guaranteed. MLB and NBA contracts are bad ass. You can sign, play a month and retire and get all that money (unless they have a clause in the contract.)

Very interesting and well explained so thanks . I live in Oliver BC Canada and the Big League Experience camps just ended. They are weekly camps ever August for young kids up to 17 . I believe this camp has been going on since the early 60’s. Fun to watch the practice and games.

Got a Poker buddy who signed with the Phillies in 1987. Started in AAA sent down to AA and was called up the last month of the season. He made ,18 G the entire year. His best year was '91 when he made 130K playing the majority in the Major's.
My buddy knows Frankie Catalanato. I was surprised when I looked up how much he made over his career!

I had a moving and storage company in Phoenix AZ, and a guy ( can’t remember his name) from AAA ball wrote me a bad check. I took him to court and he never showed up. Maybe this is the guy? God bless him.
That’s crazy. Baseball is huge business in Phoenix. It’s a hot bed.
As a baseball fan, I would love to hear the other side of these stories and scenarios. How about having your wife give her side of what she experienced thru your time from minors/majors? So much of baseball life is a secret. Many players could not have succeeded thru the system without support from partner or family. Let them speak.
So basically they treat minor leaguers like McDonald’s employees and major leaguers like gods
Edit: I was over exaggerating. Obviously major leaguers don’t get treated like gods, maybe like children of parents that can’t say “no”
I think that is basically the reality of their relative value.
Minor leagues - McDonalds, KFC, Burger King
Major leagues - Go get a steak kid, you earned it.

The Toronto Blue Jays have announced that they will voluntarily pay their minor league players more money. There was a class action lawsuit by former players that went nowhere. The signing bonuses for high draft picks is huge. That should be calculated in the numbers. What's really unfair is that college student athletes make millions and millions of dollars for their colleges and get paid nothing. Even students on academic scholarship can get paid work on their campuses, but American colleges think their athletes should settle for the scholarship. Most of the degrees that they earn are worthless. A college athlete who doesn't get drafted by the NBA, NHL, MLB or NFL basically worked for three to four years for free and have nothing to show for it. There are a few exceptions. Some bright students who also excelled at sports and earned a degree that will enrich their lives and provide future employment opportunities, but for the vast majority the payoff with a big major league contract or signing bonus is the thing.
I prefer the 8 year old me who thought every single person who played an mlb game was a gazzilionaire.
Were you given an benefits in the minors or majors? by benefits I mean like medical/dental/insurance? What about mlb pensions? Did you qualify for a pension?

It’s really cool to hear from a guy who was drafted high, kinda busted (no offense; getting picked that high in draft is an accomplishment in itself), but have these cool, humble stories. You made it to the show; the rest of us could only dream. There was a time in my life, where being a big-leaguer was the only thing I thought about. Had the physique for it, but not the drive. Was a good HS ball player, and I really miss playing the game

$500,000/day might be absurd, but I'm pretty sure Bryce Harper is making close to $200,000 a game, lol! ... not to mention top level starters like Verlander making $6500 per pitch!

Matt hopefully you get this question, but maybe you can do a video on the intimidation factor of the game, and how that progressed through the different levels. Seeing more and more talent and studs can make someone feel like they arent as good and if they have to be that good wonder if they will ever get to that point. Maybe you can add this somewhere in an upcoming video. Love this channel btw, it's nice to see former major leaguers be really personable with people and share exact experiences and not baby around them.

As a first round pick he received a 1.575 million signing bonus where signed with Padres. If he was smart he saved and invested most of that.
Respectfully disagree. You factor in taxes on Fed, Cali level with an agent ? Maybe half .
@@peterwieser4631 is right, here's what happens to that signing bonus: Fed Income tax 35%, FICA 6%, CA state 12%, and an agent 10-15% = 63-68% leaves ~$500K - $580K.

Great story Matt. You really do a nice job presenting things that are foreign to most of us as fans. I worked with a guy at a AAA insurance office in Lee's Summit Missouri. He was a big baseball guy who played at William Jewell College. I can't remember his name, but his friend was called up to the Padres around the time you were there. Can't remember his name either, but I don't think he was around very long. Wondering if you knew him.
Lol imagine giving someone like mike trout $100 for food. Probably gives it to the bus driver
And that is just for 1 day, usually they are on 5-10 day road trips so that's 500-1000 dollars total just for food

Can you do a video on how MLB players handle being fans of teams they don’t play for? Presumably, every big leaguer grew up with a favorite team, but they only have a 1/30 shot of playing on that team. Do players openly root for other teams, or do they have to keep quiet about their personal favorite teams? Thank you!!

Thanks so much for taking the time to make this! I think the missing link when I was doing my research yesterday was I didn't know about the 40 man salary. Contextually my friend was saying that one of the players who was on our big league team (but was making league minimum) but got sent down to AAA should be happy he's getting paid to play baseball. Having watching some of your other videos I was like "yea but they're not even making minimum wage down there" and he couldn't believe me. Will have to show him this so he can appreciate the hustle those guys are putting in day in day out. Thanks again for the videos. Can't tell you how much more enjoyable this season has been watching your channel and seeing some of the stuff that goes on behind the scenes to make a major league game happen. Cheers!

Here’s a fun stat. Clayton Kershaw makes $31M a year. He’ll makes 30-33 starts, if healthy. So we’ll say $1M per start. And he’ll throw about 110 pitches max, per outing. That breaks down to $9090 per pitch....
