Ft Wayne was crazy like that! I remember having people sleeping in our living room all the time! We have a minimum 4 guys in that 2 bed 2 bath but a lot of the time it seemed like 6 or 7 🤣
Toronto Blue Jays have been known to literally live in the stadium. Rogers Centre has a hotel built into the stadium, some rooms have views of the field, others don't. Roberto Alomar was one of the first to do so and other players followed his lead. In fact if you watch the Toronto Blue Jays 1992 retrospective video, you see Alomar and Candy Maldonado being cheered on by the cleaning staff as they leave for Game 6 of the 1992 ALCS. David Cone and Roger Clemens both lived in the hotel. With stadium security already onsite it makes sense.
Clemens had from 4 to 6 different "roommates" in the time he was there. Said it was the best "situation" ever for hiding chicks because he would just change rooms all the time whenever he changed women. He even had "code names" or #s for them sometimes. He had a dude in the hotel part of the building "take care" of him and that dude would get tipped at least $200/day when Jays were in town. Roger would call "Jay" (how clever) and say "Put #4 in Room #xxxxx for today and tomorrow and then "Put #2 in Room #xxxxx Sat and Sun. And make sure #4 gets flowers and chocolate and #2 gets whatever champagne she wants. What a life!!
The independent team in my city did not have enough billet homes, so they put some players up in the private boxes at the municipally-owned stadium, which led to some problems with the city!
This is a great channel. Mr. Antonelli is giving a plethora of specific details of his experiences that will help young players carve out a better vision for their future. Very valuable and thank you!
I used to bartend at an extended stay hotel, there was a well known Major Leaguer who was a live-in there and used to order the same thing from the bar everyday.
@@djkil624 idk this was like ten years ago, I think it was like a vodka cranberry and a turkey sandwich. Guy never tipped either and was miserable to deal with. Used to bring ugly prostitutes to the hotel every weekend. His wife was very nice, she would visit sometimes with the kids and slip me like $100 and apologize to me on his behalf. One day she was at the hotel and caught him cheating with his prostitutes, huge fight in the lobby and they got divorced afterwards
We were/are a host family for the Bristol Pirates and absolutely loved it. The Appalachian League was nixed this past year by the MLB. The new league will be a wood bat Collegiate League and we will be a host family. Just a great experience!
Summer Catch is a great movie about summer wooden bat leagues. For people like me who aren't pro baseball players it gave a good look at what those leagues were like.
Ft. Wayne?! I didn't realize you played there but it makes sense. A bunch of the Wizards lived in my apartment building, Canterbury Green, between 2001 to 2005. Good group of dudes. Small world!
My friend from college was a trainer for the Pirates and then the Cubs. When the teams played in Cinci, I would drive down from Toledo to visit, and catch some games. Both of those teams stayed at the Hyatt in downtown Cincinnati. I was told by the hotel staff that all the MLB teams that came to town to play the Reds, stayed at that hotel. I stayed there a few times as well, if rooms were available. Not a bad hotel, but it was not the greatest. I was told that teams like the hotel because it was within walking distance to the stadium, and they offered certain amenities such as a private entrance, and a VIP elevator for the players to use. I remember that Bonds, Sosa, and a few others were often mobbed by fans when they came back to the hotel after the game. It was nice sitting in the hotel bar, at night after the game, having a couple beers with my friend, and being introduced to some of the players and coaches who might stop in. I truly enjoyed those times.
Q+A: Why do pro baseball teams have such short turnaround for players' moving around? Trades, call-ups, send-downs and releases all seem to happen on the shortest notice possible to players. Don't players sometimes get told to report somewhere on the opposite side of the country the following day?
Hey buddy . You got me into baseball bud. hockey fan and haven’t seen the merit in any other sports. No matter how u might look at your career, u are doing great things for the sport here and I believe, as some goof hockey squid, this is ur calling. Baseball guy now! I think you are referring to the Omni Hotel.. It sits across Petco Park on Tony Gwyn Street. There is a walking bridge that takes you directly to the stadium
Did you look for furnished apartments? Also, when you get traded, does the new team pay your moving cost? The closest that I experience with that was getting stationed to a new base in the Air Force. I guess I could think of it as a trade.
Before you assume that baseball players are rich and they have it better than anyone else or whatever, watch this video first, good work on the video providing perspectives for the entire field of baseball
Do teams have apartment list that will work with you on short-term leases? Seems like landlords would like to have some sort of contract with teams to rent apartments to players that benefit both.
How much was an apartment in San Diego? I could definitely see how an apartment could be $100 a day or even more and be comparable to a weekly rate at a hotel.
Lot of people say why do ballplayers get paid so much, usual bitch and moan. I say there is only 700 souls on this earth who are talented enough to be able to play in the big leagues. For that reason alone as long as fans and networks are willing to pay these (you) guys deserve all the perks that come their way.
What were the Motels like traveling in the Cal. League? Glad to know, that some host families are good! Wade and David, I recall seeing them at LE along with you! We were at the Storm game, where your promotion was announced. When that happens, to you head to the nearest airport, or can you drive to the new team?
I was an airline pilot. I stayed in a number of hotels where MLB and NFL teams stayed. First of all, I usually wondered why those teams were staying at such crappy hotels. Second, there was usually lots of fans hanging out there and security that made it hard to get in the elevators. (I have also been driven to hotels where the driver was a minor league player in the off season)
I actually burst out laughing at the living by yourself reference at the beginning. What happens when a player gets sent back to the minor leagues, does he generally move back into the same place he was in? Also, during your stay at the hotel in San Diego, whether or not the hotel employees knew that you played for the Padres, did you have to use an alias, for security reasons?
" did you have to use an alias, for security reasons??" I'm guessing dude that just got got called up from the minors wasnt "too well known" by..........................ANYBODY at that hotel or even on the team so.......I would guess security wasnt really necessary....Unless of course his roommate or next door neighbor was TONY GUINN. Where did you live when you played in SA? I could imagine you would have had to drive for awhile since living anywhere near Wolff Stadium would be scary.
Matt, when you played, did players care about being favored or not? I think now with gambling becoming legal in many places, some might pay attention to it more than before.
ZERO players on ZERO teams care about the "lines" or "odds" on any game. And the "favorite" is simply some casino or bookies "opinion" anyway. Means nothing unless you are wagering...Anyone tells you different is lying....Look at what happened to Pete Rose.
