    Only tangentially related:
    Stafford is the most underrated QB in the league.
    Calvin broke the all-time receiving record... with Stafford throwing him the ball.
    Kupp broke the all-time season + post-season record... with Stafford throwing him the ball.
    Puka broke the rookie receiving record... with Stafford throwing him the ball.
    Has a ring, threw a no-look pass in the Super Bowl, consistently makes eye-popping throws, one of the toughest MFers on the field at any given moment, holds the record for most 4th Q comeback wins among active QBs, yet when it's time to talk about the league's best at the position... crickets.
    I bet if he did ayahuasca or sounded like a muppet when he talked then people would care.

      I think part of Stafford's optics problem is that he's so good, he makes almost everything look routine, so a lot of the time it's hard to notice how crazy the level he operates at. Combine that with the higher turnover rate of his style, and a lot of people just don't know what they're looking at.

    Something not talked about much: when Staff first joined the Rams, he and Kupp started doing "breakfast club" where they'd get to the practice facility hours beforehand to go through film while they ate breakfast so they could get on the same page. Puka essentially just asked if he could join them and the rest is history.
    Turns out, working hard and spending time/learning with one of the best current QB/WR duos in the game is a recipe for success.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W 15 дней назад +4

      There is that. But as Brett outlined in the video Puka had other things go his way that led him to that roaring success. The chemistry between Puka/Stafford was the absolute best case scenario for two guys who never had live reps together. Puka's high end ability to go from catcher to runner in a short motion was also a big deal on his end. A skillset you don't find often with a guy with terrific hands and good enough burst. He's special enough that he far exceeded expectations even from what Brett thought was a guy who can fill in Robert Woods' role.

    • @gutlesswarrior
      @gutlesswarrior 14 дней назад +7

      @@t4d0W yes, I too watched the video. As someone who has followed the Rams since the Spag days, I can tell you there has never been another WR that joined the breakfast club before Puka. That was always Stafford and Kupp's thing and everyone talked about it after Kupp got the receiving triple crown. Everyone made a big deal during training camp that Puka had been joining them. How exactly do you think Stafford and Puka developed chemistry before taking live reps, as you mentioned? Just throwing against air? It was from all the extra time they spent together reviewing film, making sure they were on the same page when it came to pre and post snap reads. Obviously the points that Brett mentions are valid, no one thing predicts success in the NFL. I'm just pointing out that he missed that point despite his emphasis on the trust Puka and Stafford had between each other. That doesn't come out of nowhere

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W 14 дней назад

      @@gutlesswarrior I assume Brett didn't mention that specific detail because those who followed his glowing Puka draft breakdown meant they would be following his development in the training camps and before the regular season started. Which is how I sorta caught wind then that Stafford was talking to Puka about the routes he liked to run. I wasn't aware the actual activity itself and the significance of it to certain Rams fans. The other things going for Puka I feel are as huge of a deal especially taking more diverse roles as a the season went along which went further beyond the expectations that he was supposedly capable of.

  • @vogonford
    @vogonford 14 дней назад +22

    The other takeaway from the film: My god Stafford has one of the best arms the NFL has ever seen. The ball at 10:20 is absolutely nuts. I know he's been doing it for fifteen years in the NFL now... but holy toledo that's a truly *rare* kind of throw. Over 25 yards down field and with the perfect level of oomph and touch combined to make it that only Puka is able to get his hands on it

    In soccer there's a concept of putting information on a pass - the weight, the foot you are passing to, the shape of the pass - it can all tell the person being passed to what the passer expects them to do with it. Sounds like Stafford and Puka have that same concept down to a fine art. The usual insightful video, can't wait for the Vic Fangio one. :)

    I'm glad you mentioned the qb placing the ball to lead the receiver. I'm sick of people saying a qb made a good throw when the ball makes it to a reciever. It's not. It's when the qb places the ball either to a place only the reciever can get it or leads them in a direction. As a Pat's fan I watched tb12, and then cam and mac and while there was many issues, I put the blame not on Wrs but the qb. These examples, thr ball got to puka in stride, on time, and in the direction they needed to go. If you watch macs tape, the wr had separation, but had to slow down and wait for the ball. And the placement made the Wr stop and try to studder step away from the defender. For all the people saying we should have drafted.....x, y, z,.....puka, etc, it wouldn't work. It works because stafford.

    There is so much more here than merely what we're seeing or what Brett is saying. Everyone pro-Goff still hates McVay for how he handled the Stafford trade.
    But this is exactly what Goff still doesn't do. Goff is great at what Ben Johnson schemes. His highlight reel features Goff throwing the ball to places on the field he can't even see. Now is it even possible to _see_ let alone lead the receiver by passing it to their lead or back shoulder?
    No. But this wasn't something Goff was particularly good at & still isn't: during play adjustments. That 2-way trust is actually 3-way. McVay wants to give you the info needed for you to figure out what's best, then do it. Goff wants to throw to the pre-planned route. That's where he's at his best. There are a lot of coaches who don't allow their players to do what McVay _wants_ them to do, QB or receiver.
    McVay loses his ability to stick to this under pressure sometimes & that's why he hired an assistant. I hope it's a trend that catches on because losing one's play-calling ability in the clutch is *rampant* among NFL coaches.

    I really love the McVay offense with Stafford. When Goff was there I felt they had issues sometimes with the offense which is why they moved on from Goff but I feel McVay has prolly learned about coaching the qb position from Stafford. I have always thought McVay was a good offensive mind but I wondered if he was a good qb coach or had one because even in Jared Goffs first year in Detroit I saw improvement he never showed with the Rams and even tho Goff still isnt on Staffords level, he has proven himself to everyone after LA moved on from him. I feel like McVay's offense has gotten even better since Stafford has been there and even tho its really hard to be a lot better when ur offense is really good because of Staffords skill the wr routes and the offense overall is just so much more detailed even than when Goff was there and I just think it's nice to see someone who already had proven themselves really evolve even further. I really hope he stays after Stafford retires cuz they have some young guys and if he could get the right qb it would make for a lot of fun games to watch.

      I lowkey think puca is quite the overrated receiver
      Ppl keep saying he broke the rookie receiver record, but if u look into his game the vast majority of his routes actually consist of plays that allow for easy catches, just some simple slants as exemplified in this vid (i think brett gives puka too much credit for puka "reading" the defense during those shallow sits) and deep down runs where he's sort of open from the beginning of those plays
      (If u don't believe me and are willing to look thru every play of his every game last season, pls pls do. I don't want to be a hater but I gotta say I'm genuinely confused as to how ppl actually think he's even top 15)

    Puka is the one player I'll ride the coat tail of for as long as he played. He graded so well for me and I drafted him in every single dynasty rookie draft. I even traded up in the third to draft him before a known Rams fan could. I took him late 2nd in one league. I have it pinned on twitter where I begged Matt Harmon to grade him because he scored so well for me. Puka was in the 99th percentile of Yards Per route run against Power 5 opponents in college. For those who know, that's absolutely insane. BYU used him everywhere but unfortunately they were a bad team and he dealt with a lot of injuries. I wish him a long career and I'm sure within the fantasy community he will always be considered one of, if not the biggest outlier to ever come into the league. It's awesome that you made a video on him and I hope he's the one to break the dreaded KollmanKurse.

    All respect to Puka's work ethic and ability, but another thing he had going for him early last season was Cooper Kupp being out. It sounds harsh, but that's how the NFL works: one guy's problem is another guy's opportunity. If you look at a chart of their receptions and yards in games they both played in, it tended to be either one or the other having a big day, rarely both. Great situation for the Rams, assuming they both are healthy.

    NONE of what Puka did last year shocked me. I posted it on the Rams training camp videos on their RUclips page, stating to watch out for Puka, I predicted he'd be great and I knew why the second I laid eyes on him. He's got the intangibles that you can't teach, he was a great WR in high school and college but when he came to the NFL, he SHUT HIS MOUTH and listened.
    He has a dart throwing ace as a QB, though the most discounted and disrespected QB in the league, he's still top 5 in MY book. He had has a triple crown winning WR who IMMEDIATELY took him under his wing because it was clear to Cooper that Puka WANTED to learn...most guys aren't showing up to learn, they come in to put up a front. Is it because he played for the Detroit LOINS for a huge chunk of his career? There are many QBs who play a huge part of their career that aren't chasing SBs or sadly playoffs but with the right season/personnel, they practically get to show out. Also keep him in mind he was shackled for a few years with OC Lombardi. So he had those seasons where his own OC sabotages how he wants the pass game to work. Hell the Lions never had a QB problem with Stafford around until they couldn't improve on other areas of the roster. And ultimately going through shitbags for coaches and staff.

      @@dannychx9234 I personally thought Stafford played pretty bad in the Super Bowl. I’m convinced without that last drive the media would’ve ripped him apart for his performance. He also led the league in picks that year.
