Credit to John Dorsey for making a real meritocracy in the scouting department, giving props and promotions to people, based on their performance. The creation of Veach's undefined position was one of those: a plumb for the most outstanding person in the scouting department.
Veach definitely has a good eye for talent, but he also runs a crew that knows there's recognition and promotion when they do a great job scouting.

I’m sure Brett Veach watched the 2016 Oklahoma vs. Texas Tech football game helping him to decide to draft Patrick Mahomes II. That was the wildest college football game that I’ve ever seen. Although Texas Tech lost to a Baker Mayfield led Sooner team, Mahomes never quit in that game.
Mayfield was 27/36 for 545 yards and 7 touchdowns with no interceptions. Mayfield rushed for 19 yards with no touchdowns.
Mahomes was 52/88 for 734 yards with 5 touchdowns and 1 interception. Mahomes rushed for 85 yards and scored 2 touchdowns.
Probably the winning factor for Oklahoma was Joe Mixon who rushed for 263 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Oklahoma punted twice in the game and Texas Tech, also punted twice.
Not much defense played in that game!
    Great episode!

That's the game when I found out about Mahomes. Watch the game for Oklahoma's Mayfield, Mixon, Westbrook. Left that game thinking who ever drafts Mahomes will get the most competitive QB I've ever seen. Entertain the idea of the Chiefs drafting him, but quickly rinsed that thought from my brain. Thinking " Nah this the Chiefs they don't draft QBs, we already got Alex Smith and the Chiefs are playoff team no way he is still available when Chiefs number is called." Never been so happy to be wrong, In Veach we trust.

    • @The_Mad_King

Mayfield started college football before Mahomes. Mayfield was in the college system 6 years, Mahomes 3 years. Mayfield played with about 4 or five future all-pro on offense while at OU. TE Andrew's, KC's center, Mixon, others. Even a certain Dallas cowboy wr arrived at OU. The coaches/OCs for both teams played for Mike Leach at Tech, so no defense. 😅

Dorsey drafted Mahomes, Veach was still a scout at the time. Dorsey is also the one who traded up in the draft without the Saints finding out & only paid a 3rd that yr and a 1st the next year to trade up from 27 to 10 with 2 of the top 3 QB still on the board. Normally that would cost multiple 1st rd picks. Dorsey is also the one who drafted Chris Jones, Kelce, & Tyreek Hill. Dorsey drafted 4 1st ballot HOF players in the 5 yrs he was GM. Dorsey did an amazing job for us.

Mahomes is the type of “all stars are aligned” situation. High potential to be the GOAT but needs nurturing.
With one of the best coach, QB mentor to learn in the first year, and environment, he achieved his status.
If he ends up on another team, he might not have the same greatness that we witness today.
Chiefs and himself are lucky to find each other.

Andy Reid and Alex Smith were an absolute blessing for him. But let's not be ridiculous. Everybody who saw Patrick in College knew that he was an truly exceptional talent. He's also from a rich family and wasn't overwhelmed by the NFL money. He would've been successful in the NFL no matter where he would've been drafted to. If the Browns, Bears or Panthers would've taken him, he'd be the new Matt Stafford with insane numbers and no wins. If the Saints or Jags would've drafted him, he would've been a SB winning QB eventually. He'd be much less successful than in KC but he would have been a Top 3 no matter what.

I'm by no means a stat rat. I don't watch games all weekend. I take no more than a casual, passing interest in the draft. I don't break down film. I would make a terrible fantasy football team owner. Before Mahomes's second season in the NFL, I couldn't recall if I had ever heard of him.
But, I am a fairly astute observer of sports in general. And because I don't live in an NFL market, I've never really had any lasting loyalty to any particular team. To my mind, that makes me objective. I'm also distrustful of recency bias by nature.
With all that said, through six seasons as a starter, I can say with unwavering confidence that I've never seen anyone play the quarterback position better than Patrick Mahomes.
That doesn't make him the GOAT. That requires some measure of longevity... Maybe not Brady longevity, but at least a 15 year career. If the man maintains his current statistical output, and wins three more rings over the next 7 years, that will be enough, in my book. If he wins four consecutive, then walks away, that will be enough. If he matches Brady's ring tally in the next ten seasons, that will be enough.
Basically, Bro has got multiple realistic avenues to GOAT status after only six seasons as a starter and two seasons before his 30th birthday. That is ridiculous.

Crazy part about most of the issues they had against mahomes come from baseball lol... The weird angles on throws, throwing off balance, the footwork, all baseball which basically aid to his football.. same thing with Russell Wilson in his prime... These were baseball guys who could play football. .. good stuff for this vid.. love stuff like this

Kyle Shannahan blew it more than anyone with Mahomes. Can you imagine Mahomes on that 9er's team? They'd already have 4-5 Super Bowls.

I've been watching football since June 24th, 1922, when the league officials renamed the American Professional Football Association (APFA) to the National Football League (NFL), and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that Mahomes is the best ever!!!

Just read that Patrick's heart rate was monitored during this last Super Bowl. On the field his heart rate remained remarkably low and steady. Off the field watching the defense it was noticeably higher...Kid is a BEAST!

QB recruitment is a hit or miss. He was so unpredictable in college. KC took a big swing on him. They had a veteran QB on staff, great offensive coach, good GM. Mahomes was able to sit for a year. Landing on a stable team definitely helps!

I live close to Kansas City. I remember Patrick Mahomes first year as a starter when he won the MVP award. Everyone in KC was calling him the next Joe Montana, Tom Brady, etc. I said "It's been one year, wait until he wins a couple of Super Bowls. Plus, now that teams have tape on him, he'll fall off." I'm man enough to say I was wrong. Will he catch Tom Brady, out of everyone out there right now he has the best chance

The Chiefs are SO indebted to Brett Veach and Andy Reid who let him loose to go find the best college talent available, and then listened to him after he found Mahomes. I'm a life long KC Chiefs fan since I was in grade school in the mid-60's and I've never seen anything remotely like what Mahomes has brought to the franchise in their entire history as a franchise. And I've seen the some good, mostly bad and often ugly that was the Chiefs story. AND, what's even more amazing is that they have built a strong offensive line and defense that is needed to win championships. SO, they aren't just good today, they're going to be competitive for potentially decades to come. GO VEACH, GO CHIEFS!!

5:09 Andy Reid always had final say. Still does. The Chiefs are Andy's org-we all just pretend the general manager has personnel control. It's why Dorsey got moved on from, was starting to challenge Andy's rule.
Dorsey and Veach were both awesome GMs though.

Many analysts wonder what makes Patrick Mahomes so special and different. And it's the same thing that made a lot of teams skeptical of Mahomes.
And both point to his footwork and the way he throws.
The guy grew up in dugouts. From the time he was a teeny kid he had a glove in one hand and a ball cap on his head. He personally knew the likes of Jeeter and A. Rodriguez, etc. as his dad went around playing for different clubs as a pro pitcher.
The ball diamond and dugout was one of his playgrounds.
And he played ball all his life, among other sports like basketball.
In his sophomore year in college the Detroit Tigers came calling. That was at the time Mahomes was deciding to make football his main sport and be a quarterback.
Along with that rocket launcher arm and intellect the guy a lot of times throws like a baseballer.
I say Mahomes is really a baseball player as quarterback.
All that baseball is part of what makes him so effective and fun to watch with his awesome throws.

Well every player is great in highschool and college its a gamble if they can carry that into the nfl and mahomes has flat out defied what has been impossible for ANY PLAYER in the last 100+ years he throws from one side of the hashmarks to the other and off the back foot nkt looking and having insane accuracy plus pressure on him

Things like this are what make me believe the nfl isn’t that “scripted.” Mahomes put in work, and it took a sort of miracle for Veach to have even noticed him. Mahomes deserved everything he gained due to HARD work, and his success in the NFL should not be a surprise. When you have a lot of skill, of course you will win. Being an amazing quarterback in college was not at all scripted. His whole life wasn’t scripted for him. He worked to get to where he is now, and his hard work and his being noticed and his rise to the top wasn’t a real life example of the Truman Show.

Nobody found PM. He was a starter as a freshmen at TT. Beat out a future Heismen winner, Baker Mayfield. He had four great years at Tech. It was obvious. I'm sure there are tons of guys who with a little coaching can start in the NFL, but there are too many stupid people picking, that are deceived by hype from media.
