I’ll never forget when Evice used a dying slowking’s skill swap on his slaking to get rid of truant and absolutely blowing my mind to pieces when I was little.
I got scared when he did that.
It’s easily the most terrifying combo in his roster.
So, if anyone was curious, the AI for Colosseum is similar to the AI in Gen 1. They get to see what move you make, and respond accordingly. It's why they "read" so well.
Fun fact about Colloseum, the NPC trainers cheat. they select their turns after the player, so if you heal a status or switch out a pokemon, they are very likely to reapply the status the same turn.
That's the case in the game boy games as well.

seeing bosses with strategies due to the double battle system is so satisfying, wish more leaders or bosses in the main games had strategies
Plus no nonsense where the final bosses only use one type for no reason
the double-battle format really helps in that regard. There's a lot more you can do in a 2v2
Truant + skill swap was genius to me when I played this as a kid. Really made me appreciate gen 3 and how it opened up so many more strategies with doubles
That was the gimmick of Gen 3's 7th gym leaders, the twins. They use earthquake with levitating partners as well as Sunny Day together with Flamethrower and Solar Beam iirc
@@solidzackThen the problem may be being too low leved. There I just wiped them with water types because they used Solrock and Lunetone. But in Colosseum the opponents are overleveled
People don't always realize that, while playing through a traditional pokemon game, (one with wild pokemon encounters) your pokemon that you use for a while are going to get really strong. Pokemon gain EVs for every pokemon they defeat, which increase their stats in unseen ways that are separate from level. (The newest games let you see what's going on behind the scenes, and actually have some freedom with it).
Colosseum has EVs and IVs and everything that a "real" pokemon game has, but it gives you a VERY limited amount of pokemon that can be defeated in the entire game. Your pokemon not only level up less, but gain way fewer EVs from random battles so they don't get their stats boosted nearly as much. Most of the games give you specific advantages, but this one largely doesn't. So when people call this the "hardest official pokemon game" they are not lying.
True, but even thought it's a "short" game with not that many trainer battles, you can rebattle most of them, and their teams gradually get stronger too. And there are the colosseums and Mt. Battle too, I play this on Dolphin with PKHex so I can check everything's EVs when I complete the game and normally the Pokemon have 510 EVs or not far under by the time they're strong enough to beat the final boss (although I don't use items, and I usually play with weaker Pokemon than Metagross, Suicune, etc, so I have to get higher levels to win).

Not catching Raikou in the lab actually makes the second encounter with Ein significantly easier than otherwise, since Raikou gets replaced with a high level Lightningrod Manectric, so Mr. Smallant was actually gigabrain here by failing to catch it. Well played as usual

I replayed the games about a year ago and loved them. I think I went with Bayleaf and Umbreon as tanks when catching.
@@Ghtherich Umbreon is lowkey the best pokemon in this game. It's able to tank everything and there aren't many fighting or bug types to take it out efficiently

@@solidzack Double Edge is a term though and reflects the attack. A double edge refers to something that cuts both ways, it can hurt your enemy and yourself.

Genius Sonority didn't have the same amount of resources that Game Freak did, so they were effectively forced to be more creative and move away from the "typical" Pokemon formula. That's why Colosseum and XD were so great.
Id argue the opposite! They have more creative freedoms with the games, obviously within reason. But having the absence of limitation is absolutely an artists best friend (I say, as an artist :DD)
Wish Call of Duty had that mindset when it comes to releasing a game every year haha
@@armoredanteater609 I wouldn't say they had more freedoms - the series in Gen 3 was still very willing to experiment with new ideas, even in the mainline games. Sure, the mainline games are still a lot closer to a traditional experience, but nobody was concerned with stagnancy back then, partly because the inclusion of Abilities added a lot of depth, partly because the series regularly had supplemental games like Stadium and Colosseum, and partly because the games were still experimenting - just look at the changes between Ruby/Sapphire, FireRed/LeafGreen, and Emerald. FRLG has mechanics like the Vs. Seeker and the Elite 4 Rematch, Emerald has the Battle Frontier & a ton of QoL for breeding/catching Mons with the right Natures and IVs and such.
@@armoredanteater609 The meaning behind the phrase is that limitations force you to get more creative. If you have no limits, then you have no reason to get creative. If you have limits but you need to do something specific, you now have to find an outside the box solution.
That final team Evice has is absolutely stacked. That's one of the most difficult battles I've seen in a Pokemon game

Worth noting: That Tyranitar was the first time the ability Sandstream appeared in a game. To people playing this when it released, Evice might as well have sent out Kyogre/Groudon
Even worse honestly.... Sun and Rain are excellent for support, but sandstorms also have chip damage to deal with.
There's a ton of gen 3 pokemon in this game. kyogre/groudon wouldn't have been weird

@@sanhakim1335 At this point in the series, only legendaries had shown off weather setting effects. You have a pseudolegendary that suddenly does something we thought reserved for box legendaries, and a Tyranitar no less. And on a team like this? It was terrifying at the time.
Not to mention, Sandstream raises its special defense, a side effect many people tend to forget (edit: only since gen 4 apparently)
Fun Fact: Shadow Tyranitar has a lower catch rate than Shadow Metagross. Apparently Metagross’ catch rate goes up while Tyranitar’s goes down. Some Shadow Pokémon have higher catch rates than usual while others have lower catch rates. For example, the Legendary Beasts increase their catch rates from 3 to 15.
Another fun fact is that this game and XD are the only games where you can actually have 12 vs 12 Pokémon battles if you have 3 GBAs each can bring their full party of 6 to the battle. Can’t be done legally ever since…
People getting shocked at that Slaking Skill Swap never gets old.
The one in a hundred times when everything lines up perfectly, Scizor Swords Dances, then Silver Winds into omniboost, then Baton Passes into Slacking, into swapping off Truant, haunts the nightmares of a few people.
Omniboosted, +3 attack Slacking with a fixed ability is coming for your booty. With a few Full Restores for good measure.
And Salamence intimidate waiting for you at some point, just in case you thought Hitmontop might still be a good choice against +1 defence Slacking.

Coliseum is how I wish pokemon games were made cause it really does have some of the best TRPG gameplay around. They just make the single player parts easy enough for anyone to play

Umbreon literally carried me during the last fight because it's so bulky, it kept tanking damage while toxic and confuse stalling the enemies
I loved colosseum for letting me use more defensive pokemon like umbreon or noctowl since you can have the other pokemon be the attacker.
Y'know, one thing that always unnerves me about Nascour's fight is the fact that there's no music. At all. I thought it was a bug my first run as a kid, but nope. That's intentional, designed to show just how serious the battle is.
Without a music, it make the fight lame for me. They could had a mysterious sourd effect as a buld up if they really did'nt want any music for the fight.
This game is really sick I would love to see more deviations with the core pokemon system like this. If arceus ends up good I hope that leads to more stuff.

I'd love a remastered version of this, imagine this game, but with the 3d model quality of the newer games, it would be amazing. Like, look at what they did to Snap, a remastered version of this would be so good no doubt

The animations in this actually look like they're tailor-made and ALIVE for the particular pokemon, the ones from SwSh look lifeless and generic (look up Ninetails' animation for this game for example. It took until LoA for us to get somehing similar from GameFreak). The battle animations too.
At the very least they don't have immersion-breaking animations like Tiny Wailord. Considering this game is from 2003 and SwSh is from 2019, and considering this team had only 22 members while GameFreak is a gigantic corporation, that says A LOT.

I had Pokemon Stadium and Pokemon Stadium 2, which, believe it or not, require much more strategy than this game (although this one is hard as well, especially if your a child). But the handheld games are way too easy.

He didn't really struggle though. He lost a few times against the final boss, but only because he was 10 levels lower. Eventually he still won being 10 levels lower.
If you had a hard time beating this game as a kid, you probably took the short bus to school.
21:27 This might be good to know for the secret boss fight post-game (it's VERY hard) - the AI absolutely ABSOLUTELY cheats in this game and will pick its move(s) after yours. It will "predict" your switch-ins like 100% of the time.

@@fletch-a-sketch9250 I don't remember if you have to clear the tower or just beat the story, but there's a post-game fight against a shadow/dark version of Wes (yourself). It's incredibly difficult and his AI cheating is turned up to 11.

Even purifying all the Shadow Pokémon is an undertaking, but by the time you realize you either gotta get a team of lvl. 100’s or give up, that’s when the true Colosseum fans rise up

Swap in a kyogre and rayquaza from emerald both with surf and you can basically roll. I still have my Mattle ho-oh in Pokémon home lol

The two Orre games are my favorite Pokemon games, honestly some of my favorite of all time.
I wish Genius Sonority would be given another shot at a third game set in Orre.
Sadly genius sonority got kinda screwed by Nintendo. They were also the company that made pokemon battle revolution. Which was originally supposed to have a story in it. However they were only given 9 months to develop the game, and were not able to push back the release date because it had to release with the Nintendo wii.
I feel if they were given more time, we all would have gotten a way better game.
Same with pokemon XD.
It only had something like 6 months to develop, which is why there are so many re-used assets in XD

Sadly I have ZERO faith gamefreak or Nintendo in general could pull it off. We all saw what they did with sword and shield.
So at this point I'd just want a colloseum/XD remastered with an extra chapter or some quality of life features added in. Like wild pokemon, or a proper daycare for EV/IV training.
Sadly, we'll never get one because of game freaks shitty attitude.
@@mitchcockriell3814 Gamefreak has just proven itself to be a bad developer tbh. They don't take risks and just don't have the talent or incentive to make high quality games. The Pokemon games are not good by industry standards, they can only be compared to eachother in terms of quality.
@@enotsnavdier6867 To be fair, the last time they took a risk was back in BW era, and their sales tanked hard. And when they do the bare minimum and stick to the formula, they get rewarded for it, as demonstrated by the sales of SwSh. We all hate it, but you have to admit that for now this is what works best from a business standpoint. Until this changes and lower quality games get lower sales, we're stuck.
Getting Ho-Oh in this game is truly a journey and I wish everyone to experience it once, _especially_ single battle Mt Battle 100(the non-story mode)

Would love to see a remake of these Pokémon games with updated graphics and maybe more unique designs like dark Lugia.
At this point I'd take these game just being ported to the switch so more people can play them but even that feels like a fleeting dream.

I must've played this game a dozen times and I never knew it worked on confusion...
Back when this came out in 05-06, I was 19 working night shift at a factory with a bunch of other people my age. Every morning after work, we would go to my house where I had set up a giant mattress/couch/pillow fort with this game in front of it and play it for hours until we passed out and woke up for work in the afternoon.

Cradily with ingrain, leech seed, gigadrain, leftovers is and immortal rock and a great doubles teamate. Add in a high damage move like solar beam and you have a literal tank

SUCH a cool game. Being a thief taking down a tyrannical organization is a thrilling plot, and the camera movement, and all of the trainer and Pokemon animations are so evocative! Pretty dang tough, though.
Some of the music is fantastic. Other tracks are a bit odd, haha. I think I do like XD a bit more and more refined, but this was pretty epic too.
While the plot isn't as developed as I would like it to be, I don't think that is necessarily a problem. The foundation is solid and everything else, our imagination can easily work out. The "simplicity" of the plot even adds the element of interpretation, which means, that everyone will interpretate the storyline ever so slightly differently. Pretty cool, imo. Really goes to show that a plot doesn't need to be extremely complicated in order to work.
@@IschmarVI remember this is still a pokemon game. you are basically comparing harry potter to bernstein bears and saying you would have preferred shakespeare. xd smoothed out most of the rough edges mechanically but the story dropped to dr seuss levels. still better than the bears and more entertaining than it should ever logically be but no harry potter or shakespeare
I love this game, and the battle style is so fun. The animations are unique (my favorite is zigzagoon running between your legs after it gets hit. So adorable) which makes it a lot more interesting

@@ATXnomad698 some of the trainers can be refought as many times as you want, if I recall. Specifically, I’m pretty sure the trainers in Battle Square at Pyrite town can be refought. So there’s not actually a finite amount of exp. The point about only 50 or so usable Pokémon still stands though.

It isn't the hardest at all. The fact that people say that just means they're incredibly bad at Pokemon in general.
@@ATXnomad698 You definitely do not have capped XP. The Duel Square trainers are always able to be fought. Mount Battle can be fought as many times as necessary, and the levels scale up to somewhere around lvl 60, and all the actual colosseums can be fought infinitely. Phenac is lvl 40, Pyrite lvl 50, Under Colosseum being lvl 55. And in post game, you get access to the Deep Colosseum which ranges from 65-70.
This game is just more grindy than normal pokemon games which practically hands you the ability to over level your opponents.

I played this game as a kid and loved my flygon, I transferred it to my emerald and then firered to always have with me. This game helped me complete the fire red Pokédex as much as I could with out like jirachi and deoxys. I loved the music of this game a lot to. Very underrated.

This game is the only pokemon game where I ever got any pokemon to level 100, and it was with Espeon and Umbreon. Really felt a connection with them as starters, such a good game :')

Man! I remember playing this game when I was like 7 to 9 years old. I had no idea what I was doing and now I wanna go back to my game cube and catch all the pokemon I accidently took out without catching. Keep this series going my guy!
Fun fact: Shadow Pokemon don't share the same catch rate as other members of their species, instead each one has a hard-coded catch rate in Colosseum's code. I'm not sure if they're listed anywhere but I was looking into the Colosseum rom hacking community once upon a time and that's one of the things they've found.
That much was obvious, there's no way you easily catch a suicune, raikou or entei without it at least having 15-20 base catch rate.

The Difficulty in this Game was extreme especially when you deal with the Level Spikes. Ein was so hard to deal with in the Lab with those Rain Dance Pokemon. This is not a Game you can Speed Run through. I had to grind it out going to the Colosseum Challenges. Also I think all the Shadows Pokemon in this game and XD had Perfect IVs once they're purified.
No, they do not have perfect IVs. They have normal IVs. I should know, I just finished a run of Colosseum in which I did a lot of resets for good IVs & natures on the legendary dogs. The IVs and natures of my various XD mons are also randomized.
Oh, you absolutely can speedrun this game. Pretty well, actually. It is, however, not exactly an easy speedrun to pick up and learn. There's a LOT of stuff going on with the speed strats. A LOT of stuff. But it is also my favourite pokemon speedrun, because once you got the strats down (and finally got a quilava that is good enough for the run), it is soooo cool to watch.
Won’t lie, As a completionist, seeing Smallant kill shadow pokemon makes me flinch
Watching him just not cycle out shadow Pokémon to purify them constantly throughout the playthrough was incredibly bizarre to me. He didn’t even keep Umbreon
More so since it seems he won't be going to the Snagem Hideout or The Deep.
This game rewards completionism. The only legitimate way to get a ho-oh in gen 3 was either through limited irl events or by completing this game, catching all 48 shadow pokemon, curing them all, and completing all 100 floors of mt battle.
If you want a ho-oh in your gen 3 cartridges you either need to cheat or 100% this game.
I don't remember but we could find any shadow pokemon we defeated right?
Except Togetic which is a one only chance i think

I honestly wish they made more of these. Pokemon Colosseum and Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness were my favorite titles in the series. Also, proved that you can make fully 3D pokemon games with multiple animations per pokemon. Looking at you Sword and Shield.

Yay! More Colosseum! This game is so unique and interesting. And it looks really nice and the plot is cool. A nice change of pace from the "main" series.

I've never before seen SmallAnt as baffled while playing Pokémon, as I have here. It's refreshing, and no small amount entertaining.
Hell yeah I was excited to see the rest. I played through and got cut off around where you stopped between episodes.
This game was a highlight of my childhood. First Pokemon game I played where mashing A didn't work. Beating Evice felt incredible.

A lot of people were asking "Is there a place to grind?" the answer is yes. Mt. Battle.
You can also rematch just about every single trainer too, and they'll have even stronger teams the second time around
I used to grind in the Pyrite battle circle for that sweet sweet theme
I got all the way to Level 99 too before getting my entire squad sweeped by Shedinja. I didn't have internet back then, I was incredibly pissed that I couldn't do any damage.

@@Maxwelldog Partially true. They only rematch once you pass a certain point in the story. Dakim is a big sticking point for some people because the 9 trainers you fight before him don't reset and neither do any of the trainers in the Miror B hideout. So if you need to grind for him you have to go to the top of the pyrite town building and fight the single trainer that does rematch then exit the entire town just to reset him. It's really annoying.
I really hope he comes back to this and catches the rest of the Shadow Pokemon. I see some many people drop this game after beating Evice and not the post game final boss.
I knew once he used the masterball on Metagross there was no chance in hell he was going to try to catch that Tyranitar. It's practically uncatchable and takes forever with any other ball.
catch rate of 10 iirc. Metagross has 15 in this game. Yeah, they changed a lot of the catch rates for balancing reasons (legendary beasts are 15 instead of 3, for example - and from my understanding, the first starter you fight gets a huge buff to their respective catch rate but ONLY that one). So there are both good master ball targets but yeah, turns out, tar is the best candidate for the ball (unless you use the duplication glitch, in that case, you master ball both of them)
The raikou made me reset so many times back in the day. Later I found out you can fight trainers again to get the shadow pokemon you missed. Which I had killed like 5 by the end of the game. That first ball catch on raikou triggers me; I don't know if it's easier during that battle but I call bs on that.
I got Metagross in my first ball on my first playthrough which allowed me to use the master on tyranitar to make the last fight a lot easier.
@@JohnDoe-uq2qd yea I only had to reset once to get metagross and I used my master ball on tyranitar cause it was the last battle besides the shadow togetic. I'll play gale of darkness someday.
If you recall he also caught it in the shiny only challenge of HGSS with a critical capture.
Raikou has a catch rate of 15 as opposed to it's usual 3 in this game. Put another way you have about the same chance to catch normal Raikou with 1 hp with an ultra ball as you do to snag Shadow Raikou at full health with a poke ball.

This is very cathartic. I struggled soooo much when this game came out against the final boss. I ended up using the master ball on the t-tar. I forget what gets replaced by it, but I remember it being easier than the t-tar.
It got replace by aggron which is a bad addition to his team being honest. Work better with the red hair muscle guy.

The level spike is one thing. What was really suprising is how much competitively viable strategy the boss applies.

Just want to let you know, there's more to the game. I think you unlock some extra stuff after beating "final boss", and you can catch Ho-Oh if you purify every catchable pokemon and fight your way to the top of the battle tower. I've done everything in the game except catch the ho-oh itself because it takes a while to purify.

@@velvetbutterfly Incorrect. The three stakeholders involved with Pokémon are Nintendo, GameFreak, and Creatures. They came together to form TPC when they realized that they needed a centralized entity in order to manage the massive multimedia franchise that Pokémon turned out to be.
What's sad is that the attack, faint, and idle animations in this game are so much better than the modern pokemon games.

Some of the animations of the gen 4 pokemon from Revolution are absolutely incredible.
Special mention does have to go out to Honchcrow's fainting animation, but also a lot of signature moves were done justice. A lot of damage taken animations are also straight fire, and that's just true of all four games.
It's also important to point out that many of the animation quirks and movement gimmicks of a lot of pokemon were invented in these games, that would later be applied to their animated gen 5 sprites, and eventually their main game models.
Kyogre's chompers, for example, I don't believe had appeared at all before Colloseum, yet are now a staple of people's perception of Kyogre.
Speaking of the trio, Rayquaza's gen 3 sprite is frankly kinda booty, so this is also the first time I think it really appeared in a form truer to what we know now.
These games laid a lot of conceptual work for some of these pokemon in movement on top of looking good doing it.
@@nousername191 Not really sad but expected that when the devs have to deal with fewer models they can give them more animations what is why Stadium 1 (and i mean the OG Stadium 1 and not the 1 that got released in the west) only had 40 Pokemon in it, while in the mainline games they had to animate like 900-1000 Pokemon models at once for XY, and keep in mind that every variation of a Pokemon is it's own model etc...

I remember my espeon being so much kickass (and i grinded the battle tower so many times) that i legitimately regretted not only not having a copy of pokemon emerald but also losing the memory card with ita data
i absolutely LOVE the pokemon games on the gamecube. They were pretty difficult and I remember crying so much as a kid but they are still my fave pokemon games
