Man, normally Watson is the hardest checkpoint since it's only weak to ground and that's extremely limited by that point in the game. But now with an actual smart human playing everyone, I really want to see who'd give the biggest challenge.

I feel like this is realistically more like what pokemon battles would actually feel like irl. Less of a "I trained my pokemon for so long that I'll never lose" and more of "okay, I need to make the most out of what I have, and counter what I know they have from my research" really entertaining vid, excited to see the next part
That's pretty much what makes High level pokemon battles impressive. Small Ant and Pchal are both very skilled players, so it was bound to be a solid challenge. This format though, is really placing these guys in the very heart, as Pchal mentioned with pointing out that he doesn't have to focus on defeating him outright, just get good early kills that weakens the party's capabilities for the Elite 4 and deliver the defeat in the Elite 4.

Honestly the rare candy thing in nuzlocks is really smart. If anything it makes it harder, but less tedious. It’s less tedious because you don’t need to grind, and you can actually play the story, but at the same time you’re not getting any evs from battles, and your Pokémon will be slightly weaker
My other thing would be that skipping grinding also removes the small chance that you get bored and slip up against a wild mon. It's probably supremely unlikely for someone like smant but if you get sloppy while no-brain grinding, it's entirely possible for the right wild mon to just snipe a death
On the other hand, because you're not stacking random nonsense ev's from grinding your pokemon will be stronger in the long run because you have room to properly ev train them
that's my thing.
I have a rule.
Once you encounter safe Pokemon to grind on, that's when you can utilize the rare candies.
Cocoon pokemon or magikarp or hoppip. Or the daycare. Rare candies for these.
Gen 1 and 2 are harder this way.
Gen 3 and onward are harder *at first* but eventually gets easier. Maybe.

No, not always good faith. Some of us do genuinely hate the impact he has had on the nuzlocke community. I'm sure he's a decent person, I don't wish harm or anything on him, but if you loved nuzlockes before the culture he created then he really is a villian. Used to be that if you commented about optimal strategies and mons you should've thrown to the wolves, you'd be rather unanimously told to gtfo, this is about making a story. The rules are explicitly designed for you to get attached and play with your heart, you're ignoring the entire point of the fucking ruleset. But now people just pointing out "suboptimal" shit are some of the loudest voices of the community, and swiftly growing.
Jan needs to make a reaction to both POVs at the same time and evaluate his and your options for every major boss, while reacting to his own content in the process

Jan is such a mastermind. He's not just blowing hot air into the mic when he's saying he's probably one of the best Nuzlocker in the world. The man almost wiped the floor with some extremely limited stuff he was given to work with.
He made SmallAnt experience FEAR.
and consider that he did that against a guy that beat pokemon XY while only fighting level 100s. Smallant is definitely a good player in his own right. Seing Jan toying with him like that is .... scary.

Technically this is because of how pvp works in gen3. Both players can forfeit at any time, instantly losing the pvp battle.... but yes, it's funny to imagine that the trainers that force you into fights could have run away at anytime lol

tbh it's probably been implemented as a failsafe in case something unexpected happens or possibly as a way for the developers/coders of the 'mod'/of the game to test things more easily that was left in.
I do love the idea that they can run though, imagine they just see you pull out a Lugia out of nowhere and just go "Yep, nevermind. You can have the money."
This is, without exaggeration, one of the most entertaining and well-edited RUclips videos I've ever watched. The pacing and how it flips between the streams enhances it so much, and watching the 2 of them battle like that in the Wattson fight was really really fun, I really enjoy seeing especially Smallant thinking and talking like that. I'd LOVE for this to continue.

If those weren't there, the game would be one of the hardest games.

This might legitimately be the best SmallAnt collab ever. I got so much joy from watching these two strategizing, predicting each other's moves, and faking each other out. Tanner and Jan are cut from the same cloth and it is a treat to see them play against each other. ❤️

Speaking of Pokerus, I've easily racked up a few thousand runs through GSC, and probably only ever gotten Pokerus like 2 or 3 times. It is incredibly rare. But my friend was pissed when I battled him. Really makes a difference over time.

My favorite part about this collab is that you essentially have the people who want Smallant to win, and the people who want Jan to just crush Smallant. I personally can’t wait to see what mind games Jan tries to pull next :D

Usually smant mind games everyone else, but this time Jan takes so long to move (and for that matter is really good at strategizing) that smant mind games himself
that watson fight was like the pokemon equivalent of anime battles that go on for entire seasons, and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time
I really like this concept as a playstyle because it means that you can have fun with your friends while you play a challenge.
I honestly love that Watson fight watching 2 people narrorate different sides of a battle is so extremely interesting
This is incredible. The editing, the tension and the strategizing from both of you. The last time i played pokemon was 2nd gen as a kid. I never had any intention to go back but all this strategy and depth made me reconsider playing Pokemon once again.
I respect the max rebels and rare candies. It doesn’t do any good to show wild battles, or grinding. It’s never a challenge in the nuzlock, the challenge comes from the trainers. Having to grind or fight wild Pokémon is a matter of wasting time.

Imagine if the Pokémon Company, being the most profitable media franchise in history, put the amount of effort and innovation into their games like some of these ROM hack makers do. Would be fun and a game changer to have some of these multiplayer mechanics in an actual game….

Lol jk I know you probably didn't mean it like that... Having multiplayer Gyms and maybe PvP stuff in main storylines kinda sounds spicy. But it also could be miserable (especially for starting players) if not handled carefully. Like how would you truly implement forced PvP in the main branch without hindering the player's progress if they keep losing? But somehow still making the PvP aspect matter? It's an interesting thought.

If people stopped buying the mediocrity, then gaming companies would have to up their game.

I feel like the first time Jan will have a not-insignificant chance to white-out Ant will be Winona and her Dragon Dancing Altaria. Just needs to take out whatever he can in earlier battles to take advantage of it. Tate & Liza will be interesting, and after that, all hopes would be on the Elite 4.

I will admit, I had kinda lost interest with pokémon videos despite rerally liking smallant becaue he felt too smart for any challenge. Having two giants of these game play it out is INSANELY intense and entertaining, I hope we get more videos of them reading each other into oblivion

I haven’t seen this video yet, but I think it’ll be interesting because the other guy could easily focus on different strategies. Either going full in and trying to beat him completely or actually just trying to get rid of certain Pokemon. This is such an interesting idea for a challenge.
Jan knows full well how painful a snowball can be. If he identifies a necessary Pokemon, he'll go after that so that smant struggles later.
