I have this Canosound 514XL-S. I bought it in 1977 or 78 and used it once or twice. It has been stored in a trunk in its leather case ever since. The condition is absolutely like the day it was made.
Does it still work fine?

Unfortunately my 514 XL-S (always well maintained and preserved in its original box) has a serious issue: a plastic sprocket has been damaged by the grease used by Canon in 1979, and some teeth disintegrated. The sprocket commands the dragging of the film and it is located in a very difficult place to access it. What a pity. It looks as new as yours.

@@daswaterhoofd To use it you need a Super 8 film that has sound support. But you can also use a normal super 8 film. Of course then there will be no sound. The sound is very bad, plus there is no possibility to convert it to digital format, the digital scanner only convert video.

This camera will break down sooner or later. There's a brass gear on the motor which drives a plastic gear. The combination of the brass, grease and plastic causes a a chemical reaction which slowly disintegrates the plastic gear rendering the camera useless. You'd need a new gear (not available as spare part) and many hours of time to repair it. It's not worth the effort. Avoid this camera and buy a 310XL or 514XL instead. And if you have a 514XL-S that's working: SELL IT BEFORE IT BREAKS DOWN. It will, for sure.
I bought one today , it’s almost in mint condition but I think the springs where the batteries make contact are worn out of shape . Does anyone know where I can send this off for repairs or a solution to this prob ?
can you tell me if it is possible to test if this camera model is working by opening the magazine with no cartridge tape to test and pressing the button that triggers the filming if it has to rotate or not without having a cartridge inside it is possible to open and see turning or does not turn if there is no cartridge inside with the magazine open. Help me?
Yes, you don't need a film cartridge to test, just put in new batteries and you'll be able to test everything. While testing, you can keep the film door open to see if the motor is spinning.
what type of batteries did you use? are duracell batteries good?
Do you have any videos taken by this camera? Is a video camera? How can you see it's videos? by a video cassette recorder or what ?
The camera uses super 8 film, which must be developed after shooting. Then you have to use some digital scanner to convert the movie to digital format.
Hey, I have one of these that i found in a garage, the camera is in perfect condition but i'm not sure it works. I put batteries inside, without a film, but when I press the record button nothing happens. My question is: does it need a film in order to work when pressing the button? or should it still run even if there's no film inside the cartridge?
The camera can work without film. You just turn it from off on some speed. Sometimes very high quality and new batteries are needed. If it has not been used for a long time, sometimes the old electronics need to wake up. If she still doesn't work, she's dead.
When I received mine, it didn’t work at all either, no power, nothing. The batty cap on the handle a small layer of old corrosion/build up. Soaked it in vinegar and scrapped the build up off. It works perfectly now
Me too I have the same issue I bought it ,finally I realize it does not come with a roll of film. I try to check whether it working with new batteries there is no sign light.Somebody can help me please.
Is there a slow motion feature or not until the 814?
The camera does not have that option.
