When they'd literally just bought a book, which has been freely availble in PDF form for years.

    I always thought it was really corny that some shows were on letterboxd while others weren't. Ostensibly, the main thing seems to be whether or not it's just one season long or not, but then you have instances like Love Death and Robots as mentioned in the podcast where each episode is individually available. And then there's stuff like how the anime adaptation of Monster is on letterboxd despite being over 70 episodes long while Breaking Bad is considered unacceptable just because they split it into seasons, and how only Season 3 of Twin Peaks is on the site because they promoted it as a miniseries even though it's literally the third season of a TV show. Just allow TV shows already, Letterboxd.

    I find Alex's comment at 1:02:00 very annoying. The idea that science-fiction has to say something about current life is so pervasive but it's nonsense to me. Sci-fi can be anything, including silly space opera nonsense that doesn't say anything thematically. If that was the author's intent, then it's clearly a success? I get not liking it because it's childish, that's fair. But blaming the movie for not having any theme or commentary when that's not what it was going for seems unfair.

    • @rsfilmdiscussionchannel4168

    I would defend the original Top Gun in that its flight scenes really well made for 1986. Iirc it was the first film based around fighter jets that didn’t almost entirely revolve around stock footage from the Vietnam War, and they still look good today. Top Gun Maverick blows it out of the water, but that aspect of the original was still really good. Figured I’d toss that out because when the original was talked about those scenes weren’t brought up.

    1:18:27 ...it makes sense. so Luc Besson was known as the guy who changed the idea of "artsy fartsy movies coming from Europe" with La Femme Nikita. It was an action movie but also had some good character work and even an ambiguous mature ending. Also happening in the 90's Hollywood noticing and brining over director like John Woo with reasonable success. I can see the European financers being like this is our big chance to get in there and compete with the big boys. Whats that...we can get Bruce Willis for _____amount more? Ok lets do it. I totally see how Luc Besson was at the right place at the right time.

      @@luismarioguerrerosanchez4747 I would consider Dario in that wave that came in with Luc Besson and John Woo with Trauma which I believe came in 94’. Italian movies were made with American audiences in mind back in the day, hence you see a lot of American actors in giallo films and the like. I think that was a special “it’s own thing” case. By that I mean they would record both English and Italian language, sometimes in the same scene! You’d have the English actors say their lines in English with the Italians responding in Italian. Wild stuff

  • @danieldsantiagorodriguez4955
    @danieldsantiagorodriguez4955 2 года назад +34

    All the reasons why they disliked the fifth element is why I like the film. The film is purely escapist to me. I don't watch the fifth element because it's profound or particularly fleshed out narrative or tone wise. I like it cuz it is over the top, silly, and all over the place. It's campy as all hell. I love the aesthetics, the odd fashions, the prosthetics. It's truly style over substance but I have a taste for that sort of media as pure entertainment. The opera scene, to me, is of the more iconic scenes of the film. The alien singing in a stage overlooking the earth, the synced fight scene. Again, the story or main narrative (simple and as they've said, better executed in other films) isn't what I'm looking for or getting out of this film. Part of the charm of the film is how "gauche" it is. Funnily enough (I dunno if this is a good analogy), if space opera films were people, The Fifth Element would be a drag queen and I love to witness it.
    By the way, total missed oportunity to riff on the film for being Captain Planet with how it treats the elements and just for that this episode gets a 4/10.
    Closer to a 3 than a 5, bye-bye.

    The Fifth Element is a VERY whimsical movie, and if you enjoy its whimsy it's great and lots of fun. I enjoy it quite a lot but I can see how if it doesn't click it doesn't have much else to offer.
    edit: also I think the guys were trying too hard to pin point where it belongs in big movies Sci-Fi canon which doesn't do it any favours either, because it doesn't belong there much at all, it belongs in European comics, specifically BDs, which are at times weird, needlessly sexual, kinda outdated, campy and, well, whimsical. This conversation just was from a wrong perspective. I do wish there was a person who liked it as a starting point for a better discussion.

    I can't believe I hadn't seen The Fifth Element until recently. This is one of the most original films I've ever seen. It has everything we all could possibly want in mainstream movies:
    * It's an original IP, meaning it's not a sequel, reboot, or based on a book.
    * This movie has excellent world-building, and I love how futuristic both Earth and other planets look.
    * Corbin Dallas is a stoic badass, and Bruce Willis actually looks like he cares.
    * Zorg is a great villain, and Gary Oldman plays him just over-the-top enough. Plus his gun, the ZF-1, has 5 different functions.
    * Ruby Rod is an awesome side character, and he reminds me of Prince.
    * Leeloo is a great example of a strong female character. She's an indestructible, badass fighter, but she's also sexy and ready to fall in love with the first man who saves and protects her.
    * All the costumes are great, and all the unique aliens.
    * It pulls off multiple genres at once: action, melodrama, physical comedy, and farce.
    * The sets are all real, so it looks great to see them all destroyed, unlike if it were all CGI and green screens. Plus, the action and shootouts are awesome, and the VFX still hold up to this day.
    * It's a rare movie where the hero and villain don't meet each other, but it doesn't matter anyway when the fate of the universe is at stake.
    * This movie is really horny, and that might be because everyone behind the movie is French.
    I miss insane big-budget movies like this, and it's a shame many people haven't even heard of it yet. Go watch it if you have the chance!

      Also whilst I agree with a lot of what you said, I take issue with one point. It’s not bad that this movie is “horny”, but how it’s “horny” is kind of an issue that contributes to it not having aged well. Korbon romances a womanchild and even basically sexually assaults her at one point. If anything it’s proof that toning down sexuality can be a benefit as long as it’s creepy sexuality that’s being removed/not included. I’ll admit that I haven’t seen the movie in a while but the main romance comes off very creepy now, but please tell me if I misremembered anything that makes Leeloo a more active character in the romance.

    @benabramowitz18 2 года назад +3

    Top Gun: Maverick is every bit like much of the recent “legacy sequels” that have been released-but with one key difference.
    On the surface, it's every bit like the "legacy sequels" from franchises that are being released decades after the original. It has a similar plot to the first movie with direct callbacks to specific shots and scenes, it shows the MC having to teach a new generation of students his old tricks, and the good guys win in the end while our original hero gets the girl, with some lessons learned along the way about teamwork and humility. There are even characters who are stand-ins for those from the original. Yet there’s a degree of restraint and maturity not seen in many modern blockbusters. In short, **Top Gun 2 is a legacy sequel that was actually made for adults.**
    What I mean by that last statement is that it feels like an intimate drama disguised as an action movie. It doesn't feel at all like it was made for kids and teens. There are real conversations about life, and every emotion feels genuine, instead of winking at the audience. There's no pop culture references or meme-able lines, nor are there stupid-looking clips that someone on Twitter could post to prove that it's objectively bad. The OG characters are treated with respect. And there is no forced political messaging, just a timeless story about a dude who likes to fly some planes and takes down an unnamed foreign enemy, all while playing by his own rules in the US military.
    All of these reasons place TGM above crap like the Star Wars sequels, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Disney's live-action remakes of animated movies, and even Pixar's recent decade-later follow-ups (Incredibles 2, Finding Dory, Toy Story 4). Those were made by an evil corporation in Disney that owns all the IP and treats its audience like babies with each installment. Meanwhile, Top Gun 2 was made by Paramount, a small indie studio that hasn't had a real hit in years and really cares about its franchises, so they deserve success.
    I'd say TGM is closer in spirit to something like Blade Runner 2049, which also expands on the original in new ways. Rather than relying on famous quotes and scene recreations to understand the story, you actually need to have seen the original movie in its entirety to understand the sequel. I still think BR2049 is noticeably better because it's slower and more explicitly philosophical, which is why it's so brilliant and also why it made less in total than Maverick did in its first weekend.
    Maverick is everything that people could ask for, whether you’re a critic, a fan of the original, or a casual audience member. And the fact that it’s the highest-grossing movie of the year so far is a testament to its qualities. It proves that people like timeless stories and strong characters and real filmmaking instead of green-screen and references like in most MCU movies. I'd even defend it as a Best Picture nominee, depending on how the rest of 2022 goes. But if it doesn't get awards recognition, I will gladly recommend this as the best of the year and shame the Academy for not recognizing greatness.
