Actually, if you see what was left out of Avatar 1, I'd say the writing of the story for Avatar 2 is great if it wasn't edited out of the movie. James Cameron just seems to have a problem with editing things down too much for theatrical releases.
Ralph’s back, baby! Arguing for the sheer joy of a movie he likes, calling out cynicism! His debates with Adum in the first episodes always gave me such a kick because they showcased both of their distinct views on cinema. Ralph seemed to have grown jaded and depressed over the years, but here he is back and better than ever! Keep your passion alive, RTM! We love you for it
I don't know about Cameron not doing the whole movie in Navi was an insult to the intelligence of the audience. I think it was more of a pragmatic choice. The movie is 3+ hours of eye candy. And reading subtitles for such a long time would be taxing and also distract from the visuals. Hardly anyone is a speedreader and most definitely no normies. This is not an arthouse movie filmed in b/w for a niche audience. Avatar 2 has breathatking cinematography. The emphasis here is 99 % on the visuals. And this movie NEEDS to make money. So yeah, even if he created a whole new language for it, his decision is reasonable, at least for me.
Also, it's been established that the Na'vi had strong contact with the human scientists that live in Pandora. Also, most indigenous stopped talking their native language at one point Plus...the previous movie was like 10% Na'vi. Idk why is Adum complaining this movie isn't 100% Na'vi
Regarding the subtitles, with a movie that is so reliant on its visuals, it seems like a good choice to have these be the main focus rather than text at the bottom of the screen. I don’t think it’s a cynical thing.
@@bilbobaggins9451 Adam irrationally obsesses over minor details in movies all the time, and often makes it the main focus of his reviews, it can be very annoying and odd
IMO so much of the unnecessary dialogue felt insulting anyway, so making it Na'vi wouldn't have been a problem if they had taken out so much of the dumb writing and delivering characters thoughts and feelings through acting (especially since they can customise that to their hearts content), music, cinematography, visuals and sound. There would still be English scenes and all the water bits are already sign subtitles. The big bonus is that it would feel far less dumb thanks to better concise writing and far more real thanks to the genuine spoken language. P.S. Just drop the narration, pulled me so far out every time
Ralphs take on Avatar 2 was pretty much Adam’s take on Avatar. Adam was basically saying “it doesn’t matter if I don’t care about the characters or even remember their names after its about being in the world” so I don’t get why he’s taking Ralph’s take of “eh idc about the writing here it was just fun” as weird praise.
Adum saying that is such hypocrisy imo In other movies , he criticizes the same thing for not liking a movie, that doesn't give him any connection with the story and characters. And Avatar ain't shit.
1:39:36 On the topic of Ben Shapiro's bad movie takes, just today he was ranting about Glass Onion for "deceiving its audience". Ya know, like a murder mystery does.
How hasn't the industry learned yet: constant framerate is better than ANY variable framerates. A 12fps animation will look so much better than something that flicks around willynilly
Almost all animated films have variable framerates, and it's often done really well. Or well, often the backgrounds and such move around at a consistent 24fps while the characters are animated on twos or even lower, so it's a lot less noticeable. My point is just, animated films are almost never animated at a consistent framerate, and most people don't notice because the animators compensate for it with smudging to simulate motion blur.
@@ygsr The thing is, ANIMATING in different framerates is different from something being RENDERED at different framerates. Also to note, animating on 2s or 3s and whatnot all mathematically works out such that frames still align with each other. It's a kind of perfect ratio. Even if a character only has one or two frames of animation, if they are overall moving against the background in a consistent video framerate, then it stops being noticeable and will look like it fits. Live action (and many 3D animations) are a kind of different story. Framerate just works different in these environments since every object in the scene will be recorded at the same framerate. And those potential framerates can be a lot higher than 24. And, what I'm guessing happens a lot, is if there are varying framerates, they aren't perfect ratios like 8, 12, and 24; they're things like 29.97, 60, 45, 48, 35, who knows. ..although of course there are exceptions, like artistically doing a shot in a really low framerate for some thematic effect. But when there's no clear thematic effect for making something seem out of place.. it then just looks out of place lol
@@ygsr I would argue there's a substantial difference between how framerates is used in animation vs "live action" (including CGI that's supposed to be realistic). If the point of the visuals is to be as real as possible, to hide the fact that it's actually just a movie, a variable framerates completely breaks immersion for me. Even in the discussion they say it was done to give a more "cinematic" feel. My favourite example of framerates being messed with appropriately was in Into the Spiderverse, where two characters are animated on ones and on twos to show them literally out of sync, and as they work together they eventually become animated on twos together.
The kids and the marines didn’t run into each other randomly though right? Both of those groups of people were going to see the battlegrounds from the end of the first movie. The marines were investigating the site of Quarritch’s death, and the kids were going to ogle at the overgrown helicopters and stuff. It’s a bit contrived MAYBE that they chose to go to this place at the same time, but it’s not as if they just bumped into each other while wandering aimlessly through Pandora.
Exactly. Adam just has a shit take on this movie for some reason. Movie was dope. The kids were scouring around the region like they probably do often. Kiri even reminds Lo’ak that when they’re fucking around in the woods to never go to the old shack. They also noticed a massive human shaped foot print in the mud and tracked it to the shack cuz they like knew it had to be an Avatar foot. Not to mention they probably saw or heard the blue squads Samson land in the jungle near where they were exploring. I had no issues at all. Who paid Adum to shit all over this movie?
@@jesserochon3103 Oh my god you’re right I forgot about the fact that the kids literally tracked the marines. 30:45 This is incorrect. Immediately after the scene where the water navi people almost killed Jake's son, the son makes an excuse for the bullies and helps them avoid consequences for what they did as a gesture a good faith. So no they didn't just let it go and ignore it.

For the question about how a star studded cast that can take you out of a movie, it made me me of a film that does the opposite, where it's a star studded cast, but the actors are so good, the story so engrossing and masterful directing and sound design that you almost forget about them being in other movies. Eteneral Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, is the film I'm thinking of. All of the principle characters are famous and especially famous for a specific role in another movie. You have Frodo, Mary Jane, Rose, Hulk, Jim Carrey (his comedic persona), Tom Wilkinson is the only one without one character he's specifically remembered as, but is a very famous actor.
As someone with major OCD when it comes to reading subtitles correctly, honestly, despite the sudden manner the film handwaves away the subtitles/Na'vi language, I do agree with Ralph and Alex that keeping it in spoken English was the best decision. This is a film where the visual spectacle is the major priority and selling point of this film. Many people have issues watching content like anime with subs because they cannot help but focus on digesting the written text on screen and making certain they understand it correctly, and thereby tend to miss alot from the fast-paced visual setpieces that are shown on screen. Though I often prefer Anime subs too, this issue often detracts from my viewing experience also. I can totally imagine James Cameron took this into account and realized that for a large portion of people, this would be a major distraction from getting the most out of the film's visual presentation. It's not a matter of having low expectations of audiences or trying to just make more money by dumbing down the film for the masses. It's a matter of being considerate towards what does and does not appeal to the audience experience towards a special effects extravaganza like Avatar.
The visuals are really the driver of this movie and it would definitely be a little annoying to read the entire time.. I usually always watch with subtitles and have no problem with it of course, but this is for sure a special case
The advantage of watching anime with subs is you get to hear the emotion in the vocal performance as the director intended. For a fictional language, you don't get the emotions unless you make your actors fluent in it...which isn't going to happen. Adum hates child acting, but he literally wanted mediocre child actors to speak gibberish for three hours.
No one even brought up the ACTUAL correct answer of the reason he did it this. James Cameron wants you looking at the special effects, not reading words on a screen. He made the right choice.
Yes, Cameron probably chose not to subtitle the movie to make it more accessible, but I think it would also be more difficult for the actors to emote realistically while speaking Navi. Learning how to effectively express yourself in a new language is tough, especially when it's a totally made up one. While it would have been cool to see a movie almost entirely in Navi I think that Cameron made the practical choice.
His reasoning isn't even consistent. "YOU MADE THE FUCKING LANGUAGE WHY WON'T YOU USE IT THIS IS SO INSULTING TO MY 105 IQ INTELLIGENCE" (screaming this in a nasally voice while he was perfectly fine with the music of the first film scrapping all the navi instrumentation they developed just because he enjoyed the film's score regardless)
I don’t know about adum but if i had to constantly glance down the screen to look at the subtitles of the navvi characters instead of the gorgeous CGI i wouldn’t be a happy camper.
I would just like you guys to know I made the exact same joke when I left the theater “I can’t wait for the third one Avatar, the feeling of fire, or whatever where it’s the exact same movie but they meet a group of red Navi that live in a volcano and ride fire monsters and the bad guys come and pour water on their stuff…” and now I just saw a headline that the next movie is all about a race of fire Navi. So we were 100% validated in our cynicism.
The “why do they speak English the whole time?” Argument doesn’t really work since they establish at the beginning that Na’vi “might as well sound like English” to Jake Sully and he’s the narrator/main character so it’s clear that we’re seeing it from his perspective
Yeah but it gets confusing when there are also a bunch of English speaking characters and no distinction between them and Na’vi. There’s also the point Adam raised about how it was pretty pointless to make an entire language for the film only to not use it.
it also just doesn't really matter. This type of film analysis is pointless, definition of moaning for the sake of it, sometimes I question whether these sort of critics actually enjoy watching movies lol.
I think the issue is that there's some weird scenes where its supposed to be the Stephen Lang character don't know na'vi language but because the na'vi dialogue is in english its very weird to have a na'vi speaking full on english but the villain being like "what the hell are they talking about?"
@@ttam2476 I think it would do the opposite, reading subtitles for 3 hours straight would not allow for a very immersive experience, especially in a movie where the focus is the visuals, I don't know why you would want to be looking at the bottom of the screen reading the whole time.
Zoey Saldana is great in this movie, however her character is mostly kind of buried in this movie. We see almost none of her in the water parts until the end. I have a feeling Netiri meant to kill Spider in that ending scene actually. She doesn't seem like the kind of character who is clever enough to pull that sort of bluff. Also we already learned earlier she kinda hates him
The point of Avatar is immersion. Maybe Adam maximizes his immersion via reading subtitles, but most people don't. That's why basically all countries all over the world dub their movies. Call it a cash grab, but I'd call it a creative decision made by a director who wanted people to experience the visuals of the movie, instead of locking their eyes to words written on the bottom of a screen. Very good decision in my book, though I certainly wouldn't mind if they had a special edition Blu Ray with a Na'vi dub. That'd be dope.
I think it’s fair to call Avatar 2 a little masturbatory, you could easily cut 30 min out and not change the narrative even a little bit. But I don’t expect a rinse and repeat of the first movie again for 3 and 4. Way of Water’s main priority was clearly all about getting the audience on board with the new cast of Sully’s kids and to introduce all the questions and themes Cameron wants to explore going forward.
Which makes a very lackluster and pointless movie. If I can consider a whole sequel just “filler” for more content down the line, I don’t think it’s a well executed film
I've been thinking more about the Na'vi language argument and I don't think it was chosen because it goes against one of the main goals of Avatar. Jake and by extension his family are our Avatars into this world so if the language is natural to Jake and his family it should be natural to the viewer. If we have to keep looking at subtitles to a language none of us actually understand, we'll be too disconnected from the Sully's to the point where we'll feel like an outsider looking in, rather than feeling like we're part of this world. We read subtitles to foreign movies/shows and James Cameron didn't want this place to feel foreign anymore.
Exactly!! thought the intent with that was so obvious and well done. Complaining about the movie being a cash grab for that was actually one of the worst takes ever on this show
I prefered the second one a lot more than the first. The story was just as simplistic yes but I got alot more from it in terms of character. Couldnt rewatch the first one in less than 2 sittings.
I loved the family in this film, the way the two children who spent the entire film struggling with self-doubt ended up being the ones to rescue their parents from the rage and despair that consumed them after the best sibling was killed was incredibly moving. Loak reciting the way of water to his dad in order to save him by teaching him what he learned from his girlfriend, the only character who believed in him throughout the film, was especially great. And Quaritch was a shockingly charming and charismatic villain, I fully expected him to be bland as hell, with maybe some boring subplot about hating the fact that he's trapped in a "savage" navi body, but they instead made him a way more fun and practical character with another, more interesting arc being set up for him that genuinely made me glad to see him return, something I never expected going in. The only real problem I had with the film was the acting performance of the kid that played spider, especially in the scene where the village is being torched. The character itself actually grew on me, but the casting for that role was just god-awful and really hurt the film, and it's worrisome to think about since it's pretty clear that he's being set up for a much bigger role in the future films. Other than that though, it's a genuinely amazing film, and that's not even touching on the visual effects which, aside from some awkward switching between 48fps and 24fps that happens less than a handful of times, is easily the best that I've ever seen in any film. The "why are we watching all this whale stuff" crowd needs to fuck off already. It's the most bad faith, "haha look at me I'm so clever", tryhard contrarian shit ever, and anyone who tries to put this film into the same category as your average Marvel blockbuster is legitimately too soulless and lazy to be dignified with an actual response.
Hi, everyone. When it comes to the High Frame Rate thing, it was more of a Variable Frame Rate. Because to avoid some sort of sitcom effect, they left the dialog scenes at 24 fps then jacked it up at 60 fps for the action adventure scenes. (It's not to say that it was consistent the whole time, but that's how it felt to me)
Yeah I think there's a small number of times when that shifting in frame rates takes place, but it's the few occasions when it happens in the final action sequence that really stick with people, because the cuts in that sequence are much quicker than in the rest of the film, so the shifts feel more jarring. I think keeping dialogue scenes at 24fps to avoid that sitcom effect was absolutely a smart move, but they should've maybe made an exception for some of the quick shots in the final act to avoid the jarring effect they had on the overall sequence. I can specifically think of one cut that takes place when the navi are attacking from the water and the sky, and then the film cuts to the hull of the ship where Jake's kids are tied up, and the shot of quaritch next to the kids is a lower frame rate, and then the film cuts back to the navi assault and it's back to the high frame rate. Meanwhile, the same thing happens during the introduction to the captain of the whaling crew, where one of the shots of spider standing next to quaritch feels like it was a lower frame rate than the rest, but it's not super jarring since that entire sequence is relatively slower paced. Just a couple adjustments here and there in their decision-making process for determining which shots to slow down could've helped greatly.
I honestly like that Ralph didn't give in on the Avatar discussion. Sure, he sometimes had trouble arguing his points to Adum and Alex (it is always harder 2 on 1), but to me - whatever issues one has with the film (I certainly have a fair few) - the Avatar films genuinely feel like an authentic experience and a cynical approach to the film is fair, but just very pessimistic. There's a reason that the film is, again, going to be a massive success worldwide and that's because it universally evokes a genuine sense of awe and wonder for a ton of people through its worldbuilding, predominantly via its cinematography, sound design and visual effects. It's good Alex and Adum are being true to their opinion, but sometimes it saddens me that people who love films this much, can't find the positives in a film that clearly has its heart in the right place and is doing things no other film currently does...
I agree. The story is whatever but I love this film because you feel like you are in Pandora and it just feels exciting and immersive. Looking at it so coldly kinda misses what the movie is trying to offer.
Ralph saying he would enjoy the movie less in 2D is actually kind of a good point. Seeing Gravity in 3D in a theater is an experience. Watching it on a regular TV is less fun.
Adum I love you. Your complaint about them not speaking Na’vi the whole time might be the worst/most invalid/unreasonable criticism of any movie I’ve ever heard.
Adam’s complaint is that they invented a whole language for this universe and then barely utilized it, not that the entire movie wasn’t in the Navi language. What you’re citing is Ralph’s straw man
Its a legitimate critique. If they’re speaking Navi it should be in that language. It was extremely distracting early on when Neytiri’s mother was speaking english.
I don't think I like the idea of films being shown at higher frame rates, BUT I still hope they include that feature in the physical versions of Avatar 2, or at least some. The Hobbit films were marketed and pushed with that feature, and you literally can't see them that way now without using your own motion smoothing, which isn't ideal, even for that use case.
I don’t think the filmmakers thought that audiences wouldn’t want or be able to read subtitles for the whole movie. I think they just knew that our eyes should be on the effects and the action. I guess it is kind of a shame that they have a whole language that they didn’t utilize, but I think this revolutionary action spectacle movie would’ve been worse if we were constantly glancing to the bottom of the screen.
The visual effects are amazing, but the dialogue and some of the performances were cringe inducing. Jake also regressed in a way that felt so contrived. Honestly, the whole premise behind them leaving felt contrived because it doesn’t make sense that it would protect the tribe. I felt like a baby getting keys dangled in front of my face. They were really pretty keys though.
I enjoyed it knowing it’s not a groundbreaking plot but the world building and immersion imo is it’s strongpoints. Edit: also improved on the character development
The movie isn't that good, but I think Adam's complaint about the entire movie not being in the Na'vi language is pretty dumb. That's pretty damn unrealistic to get your entire cast to be proficient in a new language that's made up AND act out their scenes.
I just got to that part and it's easily one of the most tismy and pseud moments Adam's ever had. It's weird, I've noticed on a number of occasions that he's much better than a lot of youtubers about meeting a movie halfway and taking into account what it's going for and the practical considerations of having the film connect with its intended audience, but that part was just absolutely bizarre to listen to.
This is Adam debate-bro'ing a movie. I love the man's content but he has a real tendency to go, "Oh, you'll say you had [x] intent Mr. Director, then why doesn't eeeeevery facet of the film support that?"
At this point all i want is a fantasy-documentary type movie, maybe shot in first person, where some random scientist studying Pandora walks around and discovers things, and we do the same with him. Make it more about the discovery of this world, and trying to learn things like the way the tribes live day by day, their customs, their music, their language, or things like the animals and the plants. And all of this without it being hidden behind the thinnest and dumbest of plots
@@DBCooper01 I mean to me it sounds very different and interesting, but even if it does not make for very commercial and accessible plot, it still sounds better than what we got
@@DBCooper01 Maybe thats a better way to experience Pandora then, who knows. an interactive video game style experience that's all about discovering the world!
Couldn't disagree with Adam more about Quaritch if i tried. I felt that he was most definitely one of the best parts of the first movie. The dude was so fucking metal. He got shit done. Quaritch led every mission putting himself on the battlefield. Was blunt and honest about this motives. Didn't care about anything other than to complete the mission or protect his men. Quaritch exuded the whole meathead military badass thing so much. Then there's the sequences with him which i thought were cool as hell: When he flat out punches Jake in the face for betraying him. When he's sipping on a cup of coffee as he commands an entire air fleet to rocket barrage Hometree. When he kicks down the airlock door without a mask so he could magdump and entire machine gun on Jake's escape party before switching to his sidearm and doing the same. When he fires at Jake through the escape hatch on his damaged aircraft while holding his breath and subsequently getting knocked around by an explosive shockwave. When he quickly pilots an AMP suit so he can safely exit his plummeting aircraft. When he wrestles and stabs the shit out of a Thanator, by himself. I get everything i typed was done repetitively, but still. The dude was cool. 1 dimensional? Yeah, sure. But cool as hell. He was a fearless leader. And Stephen Lang killed it in the role. He was over the top in a good way. Glad they brought him back somehow.

Wasn't it preferrable to have Cameron as head of special effects, and let someone else do the writing? why are we giving him an entire movie, if he didn't bring good story recently?
The motive from miles (The Colonel) Wasn’t just to get revenge on Jake it was to take him out and weaken the navi as he is basically their leader and killing him would demoralise and make it easier to take out the navi I’m sure even the female Colonel even addressed this when briefing miles and his team but obviously miles has his own personal intentions

It kills me when people say they didn't notice the frame rate changes in Avatar. There are action scenes near the end where shots change between 24 and 48 back to back and its incredibly jarring. I spent the first half of the movie wondering if there was an issue with the theater's projector.
@@nabetse1999 It's also possible you didn't see 48 fps. Only the 3D format has dynamic frame rate but not even all 3D showings will have it. Personally, I think it's pretty hard to miss when an action scene suddenly drops half its frames.

Adam. they would have had to have most of the movie in the Na'vi language including all the little kids. so you want the entire cast to learn and entirely new language just for some movies? that seems a tad unreasonable.
That doesn't bother the cast of Mel Gibson's films (Passion of the Christ, Apocalypto). When actors perform in a language they don't know, they don't have to literally learn the whole language. It's usually a combination of some knowledge and performing the lines phonetically.
It is kind of funny how all three of you expected very different things from the Avatar movie and I'm not entirely sure you all got on the same page. I can appreciate Ralph's take on, "if it wasn't in 3D" and it's a shame Alex didn't understand what he was trying to say. *Adam
That didn't make any sense to me. Adum is talking about the writing/script, then ralph basically says, yeah I would have a problem with it too if it was in 2D. Which is at least to me a completely different conversation
@@bradleylintmore3492 I don't think so, I think it's the exact conversation they had been having. Ralph is saying, "the spectacle of the movie is why I liked it. If I watched it in 2D, the spectacle of the movie would be way less impactful and I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much and all the other problems with the movie would have stood out to me more." Considering the context of the conversation I don't think I'm stretching here, because everything here had been said at one point or the other.
The most interesting stuff to me is with Eywa. I feel this movie continues to give it depth and I am very interested to see where all that goes with Kiri. I enjoyed experiencing this film in 3D. Great visuals.
I agree with Adam that its lame that they just had Navi speak English, but I think it's been made so that people wouldn't have to constantly read subs and miss out on the action and graphics, after all most of movie's appeal is from the visuals.
I’m like Ralph, I didn’t notice the high frame rate, but I saw the film in Dolby 3D and Cinemark XD 3D. I’ve heard a lot of critics say they’ve noticed it.
As someone else who didn’t notice any frame rate stuff and commented about it, I honestly think certain formats just didn’t have it. I saw it in IMAX 3D, not sure if it was Laser or not, but I saw someone say that the IMAX Laser ones didn’t have the HFR so idk LOL. Whole things pretty confusing. Edit: ok so I found out: single laser projectors have HFR, dual laser does not. I’m just guessing the theater I went to doesn’t have the new single laser, my hometown usually has to wait a lot when it comes to movie theaters
I have no issue watching subtitled movies but Adum is delusional if he thinks anyone else on the planet wants to watch a 3 hour Avatar movie like that. It ain’t that kind of film dawg.
i'm from a spanish speaking country and i watched the whole film with subtitles. Most of the world is from non english speaking countries and watches big movies like this with subtitles, because dubs are hit or miss.
All the actors speaking na'vi to eachother would probably hurt the acting and would constantly be on my mind. It's like in Game of Thrones when they speak dothraki of high valyrian. I can't shake the feeling that the lines are super rehearsed in those moments. It would be cool, but I think it might hurt the experience more than benefit it if the actors were trying to have genuine " family talk " in some made-up language they don't understand. And some actors/actresses might struggle more than others. I thought Avatar 1 was a fair bit better than 2. I'd prolly give Avatar 1 an 8/10 for enjoyment and Avatar 2 a 6/10. I'm with Adam in that I liked the 30 mins of " nature documentary ". But i've seen many reviews be critical of this section, but they really like the other parts and enjoy the movie more than the first.... I thought this second one had a bit too much forced tragedy in it. The whale-hunt scene mimicked the tree-falling-scene in the first one pretty closely, and it just felt manipulative to me. Are all sequels going to have this horrible scene where the na'vi suffer at the hands of humans only to have a big triumphant end battle which makes us happy because " humans got what they deserved!" ? I think the general guy will have a redemption arc this next movie, and I think sigourney weaver's character is essentially Jesus with the dad being Eywa.

I think it's weird that they are complaining about the visuals for the ending because they looked fake. First off it's literally a reference to the title and they literally spell it out that it's supposed to look like a monet painting. So it's supposed to be fantastical.
I don't think subtitles ruin the experience (most of the world is watching the movie with subtitles; this is just a USA problem); but Adam, there are docens of examples of movies doing the english just for the audience thing. Valkyrie, Hunt for the Red October just to name a few, it's a common technique. I wish they didn't talk with so much slang, like I don't think that Navi are actually saying "BRO" all the time, but beyond that, it's not much of a big deal as you put it.
Something I don't see being discussed about is how the Navii people have textured hair. These are alien people who could have ANY kind of hair but they ALL (except for Kiri, the daughter of a white woman) have textured hair. It just feels like they slapped it on because it's white people's idea of "ethnic" and feels cultural-appropriation-ey. But I guess you could say that for everything else about the Navii people 🤷♀️
Avatar is a sci-fi franchise that dares to ask the big existential questions about alien life and human progress and spirituality like: what if two marines tried to kill each other but the other wouldn't stay dead but kept coming back and tried to kill the other marine's family over and over again. Also sometimes they're catbois.
I hate to say it, but reading the comments on these videos isn't fun anymore. It's mostly shitting on at least one of the creators and just disagreeing for the sake of it. I miss the memes and jokes. I guess I'm not helping since I'm just in here complaining too.
If they would’ve made the whole movie in Na’vi Adam would be EVEN MORE upset about the acting. How could that possibly be a reasonable criticism? Adam says the plot is about petty revenge… it’s both the colonization and the personal revenge. The revenge is a piece of why they’re sending the team to destroy the Na’vi. Adam’s just a contrarian and annoying So glad to hear Ralph say “yeah that’s fine” personally I would said go f yourself
I dont like how Adam can be so dismissive and rude sometimes. Like its fine to disagree but I don’t think he should be so disrespectful to Ralphs opinion just because.

“2 feet, please!” Damn some of my favorite movies being picked in the 120 episodes; American Psycho, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Big Lebowski, Boogie Nights, The Revenant, Pulp Fiction.
I get what you mean (and that you're making a joke), but I do think it's interesting that people (especially critics) rate children's movies a crazy amount more generously than they do for other films. If you look at something like rotten tomatoes, it's no surprise Puss in Boots has like a 97% or something, because of course critics are gonna give an enjoyable children's movies a 6/10 or higher - that's just how they roll. I think the fact so many more people are gonna see this film (and be excited for the next one) is much more important than being higher rated on metacritic or whatever - I was gonna say imdb, but I think Avatar is actually better liked on there than Puss in Boots.
@@soapbiter36577 was it in development for the same time? I know that gap between the first movie and the sequel for both is about the same, but the development too?
So weird when Adam rails against story decisions that are explicitly spoken about in the film. Like it’s as he he fell asleep for portions of the movie but complains about not seeing stuff that was what he slept thru.
Because a film has an excuse doesn't make it a good excuse. If you're referring to the sub/English decision, I'm leaning towards English just because of my eye problems and the length of the film. But for world-building and atmosphere, I'd prefer Na'vi.

He was never going to do that. It makes no financial sense. I like Adam nitpicking things but that is absurd
Also, everyone would need to learn a fictional language

Also, most indigenous stopped talking their native language at one point
Plus...the previous movie was like 10% Na'vi. Idk why is Adum complaining this movie isn't 100% Na'vi

@@ygsrExactly Akira literally alternates between 24, 12 and 8 fps depending on the importance and dynamics of the shot

@@jesserochon3103 Oh my god you’re right I forgot about the fact that the kids literally tracked the marines. One of the reasons higher frame rate in games is important is you get more time to react to what's happening
+ Some people get motion sickness at low frame rates
+ When filming you are using a real exposure time so there's some natural motion blur and interpolation. With games you are rendering instant parcels of time so 30fps of game can look very different than 30fps of film. The former looks like a fast slideshow where as the latter blends together
It works in games and sports, but never in movies.

True detective is another example. Matthew is sooooo good in it, u dont see him, only the character.

I lost count the number of times I heard a character say "Bro" in the movie.
Ralph and Adam both have Type A personalities and Alex is the mediator
Alex is the most intelligent, but he can't be the most popular, people like polarizing figures.
Only Adam would be upset that an American blockbuster didn’t take place entirely in a made up language lol. Ralph’s take is completely right here.
Unfortunately James Cameron doesn’t have a way to make actors and audiences learn a whole new language for one franchise
It's a missed opportunity. They took the easy way out. But I think Adum knows this was the more likely outcome.
That’s wasn’t news. James Cameron said a while ago each film would be about the different elements.
Isn't their dad american? Isn't that more than enough reason why they speak English?
Uh yeah that's what Adum said, and he added that it's a lame excuse.
it also just doesn't really matter. This type of film analysis is pointless, definition of moaning for the sake of it, sometimes I question whether these sort of critics actually enjoy watching movies lol.
Having a 3 hour movie be in Naavi would he ridiculous lol
Right I think it would add to the atmosphere and actually get you some what into the culture it would feel a lot more real
@@jpeg204 because I don’t have to stare at the bottom of the screen to read subtitles lmao I can look at both
@@rinothename5563 I do not think there is a scene like that in the movie.
Snore
Which makes a very lackluster and pointless movie. If I can consider a whole sequel just “filler” for more content down the line, I don’t think it’s a well executed film
@@beardog7020 I definitely couldn’t call it lack luster or pointless, but it is stuffed with plenty of filler.
Adam is the brain, Ralph is the heart, and Alex is the (Sigourney) weiner.
Anyway, the Frankenstein monster made me gay.
But the plot in this is even worse.
Yeah real simple you needed 3 friggin hours. Cliche after cliche dawg. It looked cool, but that’s about it
Hi, everyone.
It’s not 60fps, it’s 48fps, and some of the dialogue scenes WERE in 48fps and some action was in 24fps. It felt completely arbitrary which was which.
Yeah I'm shocked that I'm on Ralph's side for once. Not even as a principle, it's just objectively the correct take.

Don't watch the Kung Fu Panda episode 💀💀
It seems like he went into the movie ready to hate it.
Adam’s complaint is that they invented a whole language for this universe and then barely utilized it, not that the entire movie wasn’t in the Navi language. What you’re citing is Ralph’s straw man
@@pwnishing4life he said that it felt like a cash grab because they didn’t utilized the language.
That’s gonna be tricky because players can’t do 48fps. They’d have to boost it up to 60fps or just cut it down to 24fps.
Now that I’ve heard these views on the second Avatar, I want a Mr. Plinkett review. I’m not expecting one, though.
Vanilla Sky used to be my favorite Tom Cruise film until Minority Report came out the next year.
And the dumb decisions the characters were making were still the same
The movie isn't that good, but I think Adam's complaint about the entire movie not being in the Na'vi language is pretty dumb. That's pretty damn unrealistic to get your entire cast to be proficient in a new language that's made up AND act out their scenes.
Yeah that’s a lot to ask
And I'm sure those visual effects artists that slaved away for 10 years would love for everyone to be reading subtitles for the entire movie
It’s impossible. It’s unreasonable to ask for it honestly
Love how well these guys balance each other
At this point all i want is a fantasy-documentary type movie, maybe shot in first person, where some random scientist studying Pandora walks around and discovers things, and we do the same with him. Make it more about the discovery of this world, and trying to learn things like the way the tribes live day by day, their customs, their music, their language, or things like the animals and the plants. And all of this without it being hidden behind the thinnest and dumbest of plots
Doesn't sound like an engaging plot for a movie.
@@DBCooper01 I mean to me it sounds very different and interesting, but even if it does not make for very commercial and accessible plot, it still sounds better than what we got

Oh... Ralph's back...
Adam thinks Avatar 2 was a cash grab, despite the film being prohibitively expensive and time consuming to make.
I don’t get how he can say that while Cameron is so passionate about the movies and world he created
Then there's the sequences with him which i thought were cool as hell:
When he flat out punches Jake in the face for betraying him.
“I’m frozen, you’re dead, and I love you.”
Vanilla Sky was painful because it was a movie about making a bad choice and never knowing what could have been.
I just need adum to go “can you explain that” to Ralph one time
I'm with ralph on avatar. I enjoyed it a lot
I honestly liked more then I wanted to.
I'm glad Ralph is the Avatar 2 defender lol. I thought it was great too
Wasn't it preferrable to have Cameron as head of special effects, and let someone else do the writing? why are we giving him an entire movie, if he didn't bring good story recently?
Because the last one was the highest grossing movie of all time, they trust him.
Because it is his idea and concept. He is also not the only write (not that the writing is the important part of the movie).
The motive from miles (The Colonel)
Wasn’t just to get revenge on Jake it was to take him out and weaken the navi as he is basically their leader and killing him would demoralise and make it easier to take out the navi I’m sure even the female Colonel even addressed this when briefing miles and his team but obviously miles has his own personal intentions
then why was there literally only 1 squad after Jake? When they new his location in the water tribe, away from the mountains and Na'vi with guns and techn, why didn't they just send a heli in and blow his ass up from the sky?
@@deetvleet They address this in the film if you paid attention, every time they went up to the trees the gunships would get took down instantly also they were a specialised squad of avatars with genetic enhancements in comparison to humans hence why it was just them after Jake

I know probably none of the Sards intend to watch One Piece, but if anyone is curious, OP is masterclass in worldbuilding and the show gets more intricate as it goes along. Just be careful not to get spoiled until you catch up!
OP is peak fiction. Ik Yms will complain about the lack of deaths in the series.

No chance they give it a go. And considering the story starts out with its worst arc (Captain Kuro) there's no chance they even make it to Baratie let along Arlong Park or Alabasta. I mean, the way the tore into 'Your Name' I can't imagine any of them even making it through Buggy's arc.

I might see it for a second time tomorrow and get the experience again. Thanks, Sard boys!
It kills me when people say they didn't notice the frame rate changes in Avatar. There are action scenes near the end where shots change between 24 and 48 back to back and its incredibly jarring. I spent the first half of the movie wondering if there was an issue with the theater's projector.
Maybe there was an actual issue with your projector. I’ve seen it twice on IMAX and I didn’t find it jarring
I noticed but it made the movie have realistic movement which was interesting
I thought it was just my eyes getting used to the frame rate. Im glad im not the only one who noticed.
It felt so arbitrary which parts were HFR and which were not.
@@nabetse1999 It's also possible you didn't see 48 fps. Only the 3D format has dynamic frame rate but not even all 3D showings will have it. Personally, I think it's pretty hard to miss when an action scene suddenly drops half its frames.
I think the movie rewards on repeated viewings because you can get more out of the story, especially since folks might have expectations going into it due to the long wait.
I very much disagree, I feel I got everything out of that that I possibly could in one viewing. I didn’t totally hate it but I definitely have no desire to spend that much time on it again
Is nobody going to talk about the fact Adam is shopping while doing the podcast? That's quite rude in my opinion!
He doesn't even give the cast his full attention and it suffers for it.
I feel like Adam forgets things cause he feels more nitpicky than usual here
Shouout Ralph enjoying
James Cameron truly is a genius because he can accomplish literally anything, even getting me to agree with Ralph 🤯
Okay I finished listening to their entire discussion on the film and Adam straight up talks like someone that didn't even watch the film. I feel like he spent so much time autistically malding about the frame rate switching that he legitimately missed entire plot points, character scenes, exposition, etc., because he's literally just outright missing incredibly important points that were made in the film throughout so much of his ranting. He's not even handwaving the things that happen in the film as stuff that didn't work for him, he just sounds like he completely missed it altogether. It's like he watched the film while mentally impaired.
It's really amazing how disconnected from general audiences Adum is. I don't begrudge him his opinion at all though. I just don't don't take his opinions seriously on blockbuster movies because of his inability to relate to a normie like me.
Same. I don’t really take adam’s movie opinions seriously anymore and he’s talks to people as if they’re stupid for disagreeing with his opinions. Sometimes he has good points but I feel like he’s getting worse as a critic. An Adam 6 is like an 8 in reality.
Or maybe it’s okay to acknowledge that a stupid movie is stupid. It doesn’t make YOU stupid for liking it, but it’s silly to pretend that the movie is deeper or more intelligent than it actually is.
@@RevoltOfAges it’s not the points, it’s how he makes them and the attitude. This is problem with cinephile discussion, just a complete lack of respect for other people’s taste. This movie was pretty mid by my standards, but Adam is just being a prick about how he presents his arguments, poorly articulated points, then laughs everything off like a smug dick. And the thing about the movie not being in mostly Navi language is just dumb and absurd. Ralph did a bad job defending his own opinion, but the aura of cynicism radiating off Adam is unbearable. I’ve been watching the cast since episode 1 and adam’s attitude is more grading with each passing episode. It’s getting pretty bad.
@@RevoltOfAges I don't mind acknowledging a movie is stupid, and I don't pretend it's deep or intelligent. Avatar 2 is not some amazing piece of art. It is corny and the plot doesn't make sense if you think about it too long. But it is a fun experience that I enjoyed in the theater. To me, that's all I need, and that's all a lot of people need. The dumb plot contrivances don't insult me like they seem to insult Adum. Again, I acknowledge this is just a difference of opinion between me and Adum (like my opinion matters anyway lol). I still enjoy listening to him.
Trying to watch the Chicken Run Official Trailer and it's in 240p. Adam complains about lack of 4k too much, it's the compression that kills it.
Why does Adum assume that Cameron wanting the movie to be more accessible = just wanting more money. Maybe he genuinely wants the movie to be a more accessible and enjoyable experience for a general audience
Because Adam is too artsy to get into the general audience mindset
Adam thinking the entire movie should be in a made up language with subtitles is so ridiculous hahaha. How can you possibly think a 300 million dollar movie should be nothing but navi for 3 hours.
@@cokemaster3710 great idea. Let’s make the audience read subtitles instead of being focused on the ground breaking special effects and environment that is the selling point of the entire franchise. For real, I didn't even like the movie but that critique is absolutely ridiculous
It’s like how in The Dark Crystal they tried to have it all in a made up language and no one knew what was going on.
If I watched it in 2D, the spectacle of the movie would be way less impactful and I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much and all the other problems with the movie would have stood out to me more."
Considering the context of the conversation I don't think I'm stretching here, because everything here had been said at one point or the other.

Something I don't see being discussed about is how the Navii people have textured hair. These are alien people who could have ANY kind of hair but they ALL (except for Kiri, the daughter of a white woman) have textured hair.
