Adam makes a lot of great points, but he also seems, in a few spots, to be criticising the films for things that are more the fault of popular culture rather than the movies themselves.
Doesnt mean he should ignore the flaws. Invincible characters are a result of modern popular culture in cinema lately, should we ignore that issue just because its a part of popular culture?
@@randomguy6679 But he isn't reviewing pop culture here, he's meant to be reviewing the actual film. You can criticize pop culture as a whole, absolutely, but Adam is being negative about Raiders as a film over those things, which is unfair and just not a review of the actual film. Does that make sense?? Adam literally criticises part of Last Crusade just because it reminded him of Uncharted 3, how is Uncharted 3 being derivative the fault of the film?
@@HOTD108_ I mean, ive had a films impact ruined by pop culture before and it can make it harder to look at the film in of itself. Sure, the film obviously cant help it, but hes the kind of guy that rates films based on his personal experience and attachment more than anything else. And from that perspective, it makes sense at least to me.
@@randomguy6679 I disagree. I think it's pretty easy to seperate the actual film from that stuff. All you have to do is just only talk about the elements that are actually IN the film. To use your example, The Sixth Sense, you can absolutely say that the film's twist didn't effect you as much because you were told about it before hand, that is 100% valid, but if you were to review the film, it would be a bad faith argument to actually criticize the film for something that is actually the fault of wider pop culture. To put it another way, you're no longer reviewing the film, you're just reviewing the pop culture around it, and that's not a film review.
The Nazi imagery thing doesn't make sense to me because disliking nazis is what you are supposed to do. Having a visceral dislike of swastika and stuff is good. They are bad guys.
@@HOTD108_ Keep in mind, Frank Darabont did a few drafts before he officially quit the project. My 52 year old working class mother who’s a pretty normal person watched a movie after an 8 hour shift and the next morning told me “this is what gets me through the day.” That film was “The Pianist.” That shows to me that people can have the capacity to value intense emotional experiences rather than comfort food. So I’m 100% with Adam. As film lovers we should go out of our way to show people these experiences so they can feel different things.
I really appreciate the hot takes on this podcast. They voice unique observations that let you know they’re not regurgitating others’ opinions. Adum in particular has shat on so many wonderful blockbuster films, at this point I expect it. I have accepted that he will always hate anything remotely commercial and/or mainstream. That way, when he does enjoy them, I am pleasantly surprised.
@@maxtrax5660 And those observations only enrich conversations about the film! I love how the very reason one of the boys may love a film could be what another dislikes about it. They’re all respectful of effort and craft though, and that discerns them from simple ranters. They know the difference between admirable technique and personal preference, and stride that line beautifully.
“I dislike this movie for featuring the kinds of established and popular tropes that it helped popularize in the first place.” I rate this Catch 22 out of 22 stars.
i found this episode so interesting because Adum, who’s seen as the harshest of the group, liked Temple of Doom the most, which is widely regarded as the weakest movie in the trilogy (we don’t talk about crystal skull). Temple is alright, but what really weakens it (for me at least) is the pacing. it moves along nicely until the middle, where we hit a really drawn out part of the movie, and then it goes into the fast-paced final act and it gives you whiplash. then eventually the final act starts to drag too. Raiders and Last Crusade are both very well paced, and I think this movie would have been solid if they had cut out like 10 minutes of excess footage that wasn’t necessary. I still like it as a hangover movie or a guilty pleasure, and I can see why Adum liked it. he found something different and that was what entertained him.
28:17 Alex is wrong here, the film DOES set up the whole "close your eyes" scene. Earlier in the film, during the scene with the poison dates, Indy visits a translator who reads the engravings on the medallion which warns Indy not to touch the Ark or look at it when it is opened. It does NOT come out of nowhere.
no character development for Indy they say. Yet he is a criminal in the chronologically first movie, then works as a professor in the second and third., rekindles his love with that woman he had something before in the second and reconciles with his father in the third. I also find it funny how they acknowledge it being an hommage to the serials of earlier times, yet Adam seems to critices them for doing exactly that ;) also: I read that Marion is meant to be 25 in the first movie and their first fling happened 10 years ago. yeah, kinda problematic when you think about it :)
Lucas pretty much demanded that it be that way so that they're relationship would be "interesting." If she was age appropriate 10 years ago it would no longer be interesting. Adds some wierd new subtext to Indy being all "You knew what you were doing" lines when they first meet.
@@natalie_the_ratalie Those were different times, dude. My grandma ran away with my grandpa to elope when she was 14, and he was almost 10 years older. They're still together at 70+ years old and they're both good people.

Adam praises Temple of Doom for playing the theme and the changing it to a more sinister and tense tone, and criticizing Raiders for using the theme and removing the tension for him, even though Raiders does the exact same thing as Temple by playing the theme and changing it to be more tense. Lol
The moment in the first one when Indiana shoots the swordsman it's actually a last minute rewrite. Indiana was supposed to fight the swordsman in a complete action scene, but Harrison Ford was sick with dysentery and could only film for 10 minutes before having to run to the toilet in his trailer. So they decided to change that and erase that scene.
Adum criticising Indiana Jones for not being formulaic and "not new" without acknowledging that it defined the adventure genre and is the reason this now feels formulaic. I really thought a bit of filmhistorical context would have made your discussion more engaging.
I've never felt so validated as when Ralph pointed out that confusing ripping sound in the truck to this day I honest to God thought I was just too dumb to get it.
I'm so glad they mentioned National Treasure because holy shit guys, if you haven't seen it since you were a kid, watch it again. It's *so* good bad. Like, the shit that happens is so absurd, the dialogue is awful, it's a great time.
Honestly, that usage of main/heroic theme in 1 is veeery reminiscent of action series like Zorro and the myriad of westerns and adventure shows from the 50-60s television. I've always seen it as an intentional homage in Raiders (though not sure why this got changed in 2 and 3). I still prefer 1 and 3 myself overall, but I'd agree in a heartbit that the music was used much more conventionally/professionally in 2.
1:30:49 The Paramount logo fades into a mountain or "mountain-like" shot in EVERY Indy movie. I'm not sure Ralph pays attention to movies very closely.
I would like to say the set up for him knowing to close his eyes was at the beginning in the college when he is talking to dr Marcus and he is showing him the book with the ark and how they saw god and nobody is allowed to see god or something like that

I don't think _Crystal Skull_ is a good movie but I'll give it some credit for the part where the guy is eaten by the ants, as I was fucking rattled by that as a kid. The CG isn't good but the concept of that really got to me.
Ralph and Adum saying that the Nazis were fetishized in the movie and then saying that Hydra (which starts off as a splinter group of Nazis) is somehow fine is a very strange statement. Especially to say it's somehow bad for movies to take joy in fighting Nazis but it's okay to have Indiana Jones kill Indian people and Chinese people because "it's a time capsule". I enjoy Sardonicast, but this episode has some real poor takes.
@Don Ossell you don't fucking need to explore the depths of Nazi evil it's self evident. Also the movie DOES INDEED explore aspects of Nazi ideology but Adam is too contrarian to care to understand
@Don Ossell Ah yes, because the MCU and Star Wars is an infinitely deeper exploration of evil. Space Nazis and Redbones N' the Gang appreciate your insight.
@Don Ossell Did you not read my original comment? Or are you just choosing to select the pieces of Ralph and Adum's argument that are suitable to you? Frankly, I'm very confused.
@Don Ossell And I am comparing the two points, which you seem to yet again be missing. If the trend of permitting racist stereotypes is "interesting" then the trend of using the Nazis for an indisputable evil is just as interesting and far more timeless. You can't pick and choose what trends are valid to be highlighted as "interesting" and the dismissal of one while promoting the other leaves room for some criticism. so no ❤️💫🧚 I am not reducing their arguments to "fighting Nazis bad and time capsules with racial violence good" I'm pointing out that choosing to describe one trend as interesting and another as uninteresting is dismissive for no necessary reason. thanks for coming to my Ted talk
@Don Ossell Never said I find it more interesting, I said both are equally valid takes, which you seem to finally be coming around to as well. At this point this is literally an echo chamber of "art is subjective" and there is no need to discuss that further. If you'd like to fervently defend Adum and Ralph's statements, please feel free to spend more of your time doing so, but there is no issue whatsoever with disagreeing with their takes. Which I did. As you said, any trope can be personally engaging or unengaging. You also write as if finding something tiring and overly familiar is entirely different from dismissal-it isn't. It's the cause of the dismissal. It is just as valid to dismiss the "time capsule" argument as uninteresting, which, like I said, was my point from the beginning. I really don't feel the need to continue reading a defense for something that I was never attacking to begin with. Calling these movies a "Fetishization of the Nazis" is a statement I disagree with, especially if you justify them being interesting due to their time capsule-like nature. That's that.
These movies are a time capsule of a different time, which would make me really forgive a lot of the problematic elements, except for the fact that a lot of people today don’t even see those elements as problematic, they hold up these movies as perfect and ideal
Adum: criticizes a specific thing in a movie that Ralph likes, but would dislike in any other film. Ralph: I feel this movie's going for a different tone.
What Adum said about the main theme in the first movie and especially the second one made me think of a movie where the main theme is used to subvert the viewers expectations. The protagonists theme is used after they have succeeded or survived something, and then later in the film its used to make you feel safe and then something bad happens. I cannot remember what movie that is in though and it's driving me crazy. Lol

It was good I’m giving this one a four out of teeenn-uh
@@jorgegranados4547 Go watch the most recent YMS stream highlight he did about people like you.
For example, I really wish pop culture didnt ruin the sixth senses ending, and while the film is still good knowing that twist beforehand thanks to popular culture ruined a lot of the films impact for me.
@@randomguy6679 'Invincible characters are a result of modern popular culture in cinema lately' - is 'plot armour' your favourite phrase?

One interesting fact about Crystal Skull was that Frank Darabont penned a script that Spielberg liked a lot, but Lucas didn't like it.

@@HOTD108_ Keep in mind, Frank Darabont did a few drafts before he officially quit the project. One of his ideas was having Indy's daughter be in the film (an idea that Spielberg supposedly disliked but wanted Mutt instead). I'm still baffled that academy-award nominee Frank Darabont had his year of work go to waste because the guy who directed the Star Wars prequel trilogy said no.
My 52 year old working class mother who’s a pretty normal person watched a movie after an 8 hour shift and the next morning told me “this is what gets me through the day.” That film was “The Pianist.”

I believe, George Lucas' Dog's name was Indiana. That's an inside joke at the end of The last Crusade.
Yup.
Despite Adum rating Indiana Jones movie 5 or 6 he sounds really joyful. I haven't heard him this joyful for a while
28:17 Alex is wrong here, the film DOES set up the whole "close your eyes" scene. Earlier in the film, during the scene with the poison dates, Indy visits a translator who reads the engravings on the medallion which warns Indy not to touch the Ark or look at it when it is opened. no character development for Indy they say. Yet he is a criminal in the chronologically first movie, then works as a professor in the second and third., rekindles his love with that woman he had something before in the second and reconciles with his father in the third.
I also find it funny how they acknowledge it being an hommage to the serials of earlier times, yet Adam seems to critices them for doing exactly that ;)
also: I read that Marion is meant to be 25 in the first movie and their first fling happened 10 years ago. yeah, kinda problematic when you think about it :)
Lucas pretty much demanded that it be that way so that they're relationship would be "interesting." If she was age appropriate 10 years ago it would no longer be interesting. Adds some wierd new subtext to Indy being all "You knew what you were doing" lines when they first meet.

Not sure about Adam Driver as Indiana Jones but what about having ShortRound return with his own adventure.
You can't pick and choose what trends are valid to be highlighted as "interesting" and the dismissal of one while promoting the other leaves room for some criticism.
so no ❤️💫🧚
I am not reducing their arguments to "fighting Nazis bad and time capsules with racial violence good" I'm pointing out that choosing to describe one trend as interesting and another as uninteresting is dismissive for no necessary reason.
thanks for coming to my Ted talk
