    Regarding the jet engine plot hole, the engine was still running when it fell off the plane and exploded. The protagonist was in front of it when it inversely exploded and would have been sucked into the engine before it exploded if he wasn't inverted. However, since he was, he was blown through the door. It looked like the explosion forced him through, but imediately after the explosion, from the protagonist's perspective, the engine was running at full force and blew him hardcore.

    • @knurdyob
      @knurdyob 3 года назад +5

      regardless of whether or not you're right about this, the fact I just read a paragraph explaining it and it still didn't make sense shows how convoluted some of plot is. Wouldn't it be better to have something simpler to follow? and let people focus on the spectacle instead of being distracted and confused with some detail they couldn't understand at the time? The whole concept doesn't really make sense, if someone is fighting at the end and a blown up building in reverse catches them, they'll get stuck inside the walls, so that means people built that building with a guy inside the walls from the start if you look at the situation from the opposite perspective. The same thing applies to the jet engine scene. If he was pulled by the engine and then it blew up. If you want to defend that the engine blew up before he was pulled into it and thus survived, then when seeing things from his perspective what we should've seen was him laying on the floor near the engine and then get pushed into the warehouse, but we don't see that, in the film he's just walking normally and when he's near the door that's when he is suddenly pushed, doesn't make sense for him to be standing up given how in linear time he just happened to be pulled by the engine. It's like the reversed time logic only kicks in when it's convenient for the characters. It's an impossible concept to put on screen in a way that makes sense, I'm fine with that, but for some reason everyone pretends people just "don't get it" when they point out flaws

    • @knurdyob
      @knurdyob 3 года назад +2

      @@coletrainhetrick I didnt say complex was a bad thing in itself. I said something being convoluted is bad when you want people to focus on other elements of your film. And its definitely a bad thing when it creates a bunch of logical flaws. Im thinking of ending things is a complex film but at no time does that make it inconsistent with its own rules. Do you really want to compare that with this mess? Terrible example to bring up. Believe it or not I also didnt excpect to write a wall of text, I just had to to point out a logical flaw I didnt find people addressing here enough and it ended up taking longer to explain. Should I have just deleted my whole point just because it took more words than expected? If anything that's the film's fault for being so convoluted

      @@coletrainhetrick I already explained why tenet doesn't make any sense on my previous comment, the kind of logical mistakes I pointed out in that comment are not something anyone can say about I'm thinking of ending things. convoluted is not the same as complex

    • @knurdyob
      @knurdyob 3 года назад

      @@coletrainhetrick can you at least explain why I'm wrong? I don't see any problem with being wrong, especially when it can help me like a film more. to repeat what I mentioned before the whole inversed time logic could never work like it is presented in the film at least. to use the turbine explosion example, looking at the situation linearly, we would see it pull some guy towards it but exploding before the guy is actually pulled inside of it. so by the end of that action the guy being pulled would be on the floor possibly even bruised from it. Yet when looking at things from the opposite presepctive, he is just walking normally and then all of sudden he is pushed inside the warehouse, he wasn't lying on the floor bruised from being pulled by the turbine. why? the inversed logic only kicked in when it was convenient, it only kicked in when the character was in place to enter the next action scene when he fights himself. Let me know if I still haven't explained myself properly. if I have tell me how this logic is wrong, otherwise I can't really argue any counterpoint to your comments since you don't give me anything to counter

    The tanks and other military equipment was supplied by the Russian Army, he'd asked for a lot more becuase he wanted to feel like a proper large scale battlefield , but when they were delivered there was much less than he asked for and he only had limited time with it too, so he believed those shots to be rushed. 56:00 The film is based on _Roadside Picnic_ , but the authors - the Strugatsky Brothers - wrote the screenplay specifically for the film making the protagonist almost saintly.
    The book's main character is devolving gradually from a romantic adventurer to a cynical bastard who betrays his young companion in the end to get to the book's equivalent of the wish-fulfilling Room - the Golden Sphere. The book ends when he first witnesses his companion's death and then hysterically wishes "Happiness for every one - and may no one be deprived of their fair share" - which is kind of ironic.

    My feelings on Stalker's "telekinesis scene" are similar to Adum's but I was dissapointed in how none of you guys were willing to go further with the analysis. The ending isnmost deffinitely a continued expression of the themes of the Hope vs Cynicism. It's honestly cute how you take the telekenisis so literally. I always saw it as being more ambigious as to whether the train is in fact moving the cups. In fact- I always assumed the film was implying that the girl is deaf and that we had entered into the hopeful perception of a child who is either ignorant or sensorally unaware of the industrial cruelties of reality and so imagines herself as powerful. It's an invitation for the audience to either engage in hope or to succumb to cynicism. To see is her as telekinetic is to see magic where there maybe is none. To see a girl lost in fantasy is to let the dark of the world in and sever your bond with childhood.

    It's even worse with Sewol than what Adum suggested, unfortunately.
    The coast guard and pretty much every authority leading up to the president at the time, Park Geun-hye, were embroiled in such a ridiculous amount of corruption that incompetence was the norm. Combined with the strong focus on deference to one's seniors (also why the kids stayed put; disobedience is very much frowned upon in Korean culture) essentially everyone was waiting for someone else to order a rescue and the coast guard and presidential office worried more about not looking bad in the media, so they turned away civilian vessels and divers who wanted to assist in rescuing the trapped passengers. A US navy vessel which had the means to conduct a large scale rescue operation was also denied. Same with the Japanese coast guard.
    Essentially the ship took more than an hour to sink and the coast guard literally did nothing to rescue anyone. Most of the survivors were rescued by fishermen and other civilians. Also the weather was calm; the authorities kept telling divers that the water was too unsafe to dive in a ploy to keep them away. This didn't stop all of the divers however and many bodies were recovered by volunteer divers this way. There's a strong suggestion that the people in power, in order to hide their gross incompetence and negligence, deliberately stalled the rescue efforts in order to make sure everyone left onboard Sewol was dead, so their claims that they had gotten all the survivors out early would look credible. A sort of: "oh, but those people died early on, we did the best we could" type of shitty excuse.
    There's evidence that there were survivors inside air pockets for up towards 3-4 days after the ship went down. Yet no efforts were made to save them either because the government stalled or the volunteers were being denied access to the wreck.
    This horrible tragedy also served as the unraveling point for Park Geun-hye's government's corruption scandal and you can pretty much draw a direct line from the sinking of the ferryboat to her eventual impeachment and subsequent prison sentence for corruption and abuse of power in 2017. The impeachment happened after months of large-scale protests which at one point amassed up towards 1.6 million people at a single rally. The Sewol tragedy was heavily featured in the cited grievances by the protesters over Park's presidency. So yeah; it's definitely a terrible and frankly rage inducing tragedy which had some major ramifications in South Korean politics and society.

    The three glasses at the end of Stalker represent the three characters. The movie is about the danger of nihilism in a way, it's a critique of the materialism of intellectuals. Stalker hopes to put any sort of faith into their hearts (not necessarily in the form of religion, just the image of something greater), and possibly give their lives meaning. There is nothing supernatural in the zone, yet the stalker tries to convince them that there is. By the end, the professor doesn't even care about the room anymore, and the writer dismantles the illusion the stalker built. He has failed in his goal. The empty glass that falls at the end is the stalker. All three characters go back to their colorless lives.

    As for the Stalker ending, I don't think Monkey actually moved the glasses with telekinesis. I believe they are slowly starting to move from the train, however it is shot to make it look as though Monkey is moving them (there is hope for mysticism, which is especially emphasized through being seen through a child's eyes). When the train then arrives it is revealed that there was no mysticism or magic involved, and it's all just the same plain boring everyday occurrence. After this is realized, Monkey looks to the camera with a deadpan look, as if she also figured this out.

    I can only speak for myself, but The Devil All The Time didn't work for me particularly because just making surface level observations on the bleaker aspects of humanity isn't enough if you don't further comment on the implications of them. I don't feel this film really said anything past 'the world is a dark place'. Like... ok? Yea, we know lol. I definitely see and agree that there are some well done technical aspects (it's shot well, the majority of the performances are great, etc), and although I disagree that all of the plot threads were seamlessly tied together and folded in at the end, I can't argue that every character was purposeful to the story being told, which is sadly a rare quality. But what is it all in service of? Campos wanted to communicate an idea very badly but I'm not sure what that idea was beyond "look at how fucked up this shit is". It has overtly comedic moments that are meant to be silly. Action scenes that are over the top but really well executed. And it hits the emotional beats when it needs to and also develops memorable characters along the way. Tenet on the other hand takes itself way too seriously and spends half the film explaining an idea that doesn't make much sense to begin with. If it focused more on the action set pieces instead of trying to be really intelligent and serious, I'd enjoy it more. That conversation that Andrei has with the protagonist at the end is hilarious but they act like it's really riveting stuff and that's the kind of stuff that annoyed me about the film.

    He's a talented director, but maybe its because he isn't my taste, but Kubrick seemed to care a lot more about character and themes more than Nolan does as Nolan to me seems to be more about ideas and I'm sorry that's not as interesting to me, I love Dark Knight, and I love Inception just a lot of his movies aren't for me I guess? I'm sorry, but I agree with Adam I have to really care about my characters and their goals to really care.
    I will like to add I do like Nolan's movies (for the most part) except the big thing is in the context of what this article is trying to say which is that Nolan is the next Kubrick

      I get where you're coming from but devil's advocate, to be "the next Kubrick" you don't just have to do exactly the same thing with character development, the point was that Kubrick did something of unique value in contemporary mainstream film and I think Nolan does something uniquely valuable too (I may be biased because The Prestige is one of my all-time favourite movies).
      At the same time I don't think there can be a "next Kubrick" just like there can't be a next Hendrix, 30 seconds on RUclips and you'll probably find a filipino kid who can play every Hendrix riff backwards plus create their own more technically impressive music, but the barriers Hendrix broke down are no longer there to break, true guitar heroes (and perhaps legendary directors) may be a thing of the past.

    Nolan actually brought on physicists to work out the rules of the movie to get his information as clear as possible and to be as consistent with the world as possible
    Going to Adums argument about the explosion: the world isn’t inconsistent because the force of the explosion is not inverted therefore it would push him through the door, making it look like the explosion is sucking him in in normal time.
    If the explosion was inverted (via. Inv bomb) then the force would push him towards it, making it look like it would push it back in normal time

    The Devil All the Time was... okay, in my opinion. It very much has the feel of "oh yeah, this was adapted from a book" with how many characters and plot lines it introduces. Something like that can be handled pretty well in a novel but in a film, where the pacing is completely different, it ends up making things feel a bit bloated.
    It's also going for that whole "here's a wide cast of characters from different walks of life that somehow end up crossing paths in unexpected ways" type of thing that other movies just pull off much better. I really feel like the first 45-60 minutes could've been skimmed down and some characters and plot points even cut all together to help with flow. Like, Sebastian Stan's character felt completely unnecessary, except for again, the aspect of characters crossing paths. And while the concept of The Couple is actually pretty interesting, it feels soooo disconnected from everything and like it should've been it's own separate story.
    Like I've seen some other people mention, I think the story would've been much more compelling if it fully focused on the aspect of Arvin, his sister, and the preacher. But that just kind of gets sidelined for the last third of the movie, which admittedly was the most enjoyable part for me. It does a good job of building tension and has some satisfying moments.
    Not to mention that narrator. I don't hate narrators altogether, if anything I think it would've been perfectly fine to use it for the opening to help establish the setting. After that it was waaaaay too heavy-handed and overbearing. Literally saying what a character is thinking or feeling in a dramatic moment just kills any potential real emotion and/or interpretation. But again, that feels like another carry over from this being a novel adaptation.
    If anything I feel like I would've enjoyed this MUCH more as a series, nothing too long, maybe 6 episodes or so. Each episode could've focused on a specific time period/plot points to really have the opportunity to flesh out these characters and their stories. But as it stands, this film either needed to be trimmed down a bit. Or if they really wanted to go for the whole shabang with all the characters and everything still included, it needed to be a full 3 hour epic to properly set everything up.

    A web series that ran at the perfect time for me was TeamFourStar's Dragon Ball Z Abridged.
    For those that may not know, it is a fan dub of most of the Dragon Ball Z series, and with their own narrative edits. The first few episodes are very much of their time, there's a lot of "lolz random" meme humor, and much of it hasn't aged great. However the quality of the series really morphs as it progresses. By the time you get to episode, let's say, 40, the abridged is so good that it's comparable to the show in my opinion. I feel some aspects even surpass the original series, they earn a lot of jokes and even emotional moments. I'm not in the anime crowd, I find it really annoying, but I loved that Abridged series. I recommend it if you haven't seen it (I know it's ridiculously popular so I might not even be talking to anyone lol). It really helped develop my sense of humor and love of internet editing as I got older.

      I don't care much about toxic fandoms, I just watch the thing alone and think about it for a while and come to my own conclusion, so I do a good job avoiding gluttonous fandom as a whole which really helps with everything I watch. People gatekeep and polarize stuff so hard anymore and I don't even have the energy to keep up with that. More power to the fans, but I just can't get into fandoms.
