- My Favorite Riff is all about celebrating the best of the best, established musicians as well as up and coming stars. On this episode Nikki welcomes Sydney Ellen, a 22 year old guitarist from California who he discovered on Instagram. Sydney says it was hearing "Black Dog" on the radio that made her pick up the guitar.

gregg4164 your comment is part of the problem that women in the music industry have, especially in relation to the genre of rock, the assumption that men must be better. When it comes to hiring session musicians, and band members, people always go to men first, and if a woman gets hired the assumption is that it’s not deserved, that she couldn’t have possibly deserved it. While there may be guys who can play better than her, there would also be women who can play better than her, but she is the ones given this opportunity because Nikki thinks she deserves it!

Nikki, keep making these videos, they rock! It is amazing to me how many people were influenced by Zeppelin. Clearly others like Hendrix, Clapton, Beck were also highly influential, but, so many of the more heavier rock players...its Zeppelin. Rock on!
I wish Sixx would do more of these shows. He was doing a good thing, and it was great how he was mixing in some younger and independent guitarists with some of the all time greats. It’s cool seeing the excitement of the younger hungry people and just ridiculously fun as a fan watching what an excited fanboy Sixx himself can be watching someone like Vai shredding while talking about his days with Zappa.
Right I always find everything after it's over .. better late than never I guess!

I'm really supportive of younger players these days too. It's easy to renounce everyone that aren't one of my favorites from my generation but there's really some great stuff coming up and I wish them all the best.

Sydney is great love her riff,s thats so cool she wrote back to you she seems like a way cool person down to earth , I,ll check out her facebook page , I should have mentioned that both my schecters are tune-o matic with string thru body,s I have two jacksons with licensed Floyd Rose locking tremolo systems and you are dead on they are not nearly as good as authentic ones . great name {funkyretard} love it.

Interesting that she brought up the Zep dynamic. If you find their original appearance on Danish TV and pay close attention, it becomes very obvious that Jones is holding it all down while the rest of the guys play with the space around him. Bonham is laying back, playing off Page while page is just getting ideas from Plant and the others. I love this kind of dynamic, and for me as a drummer, it's the best way to express myself and influence the groove and feel. I would really suggest trying to find that, no matter which instrument you play, including vocals. That is my dream guitar btw! PS, That last riff sounded a lot like BVB to me.
