- Rolex produces two of the most iconic dive watches that are, daresay, the standard of what a dive watch should be. The Rolex Submariner 116610 sets the standard of a dive watch and it's big brother the Rolex Sea-Dweller 126600 only exemplifies what makes the Submariner great.
We take a minute to look at their history and then compare their current references.

I purchased my Submariner in 1984. It cost me $750.00. I was single and decided to treat myself to a Rolex before getting married in 1985. In the 1990s I was in Vegas playing Texas holdem and the dealer kept saying “I’m saving for one of those.” He was not looking at anyone specifically as he was dealing out the cards, and again said “I’m going to get one of those soon.” I didn’t know what he was talking about or who he was talking to. As the bet came around to me to fold, call, or raise, the dealer looked at me and said. “I love that ‘Sub’ and I’m getting one next month.” I gave him a thumbs-up and have never regretted purchasing the Submariner. Retired now, I still wear it on the weekends and every now and then still get positive comments on the Submariner, some 36 years later. It really is one of those timeless classics. In the watch world, when someone says “Sub” you know exactly what they are talking about. I have never owned a Sea Dweller, so I cannot speak one way or another on it. This is just my personal Submariner story and I have no doubt those who own the Sea Dweller have similar positive stories.
Thank you for sharing Lee. Your story is great!
How lucky I also wish to purchase a Sub for $750. Both watches are great.
After 36 years still the time is accurate or inaccurate. I mean some automatic watches time moves little bit faster to 2 minutes or 3 minutes.
So what was he meaning then the dealer 🤔 was you apart of him getting the watch sooner than later wink.wink
@2:30 the arrival of the SD43 was in 2017, not 2018. Time flies, I know.
@2:40 case thickness of the SD43 didn't increase to 15mm. It was already 15mm with the previous gen SD4K 40mm.
A no brainer for me: SD43 all the way.
For me it's the Sea Deweller 43 all the way. I like the bigger size and the red print. One of my most used and goto watches for day to day use.
The SD43 is stunning in every way. Just remove the divers extension and Boom! it's much more comfortable.
That's a great pro tip. Thanks for watching!
that's exactly what i did too - will never wear it over a wetsuit.
I have both and I agree with your description and commentary on the watches. You nailed it, well done.
@Travis M mine favourite is Daytona in all gold and green dial
Sea Dweller 116600 for the win
I wear my SD43 every day an to me its a perfect watch for my wrist size of 17.5 cm
Just bought one over the weekend from my AD and I’m loving it. For me, it’s the best watch ever made.
I am on the waitlist
@@djdc81 May I ask how long it took for your delivery?
Submariner looks like a toy next to SD43. I had both. For me the SD43 is definitely a better and more beautiful men's watch.
I forgot, the cyclops is perfect, the date is readable, in my opinion it has everything you need.
Time will tell the magnificence of this rolex!
If you have the wrist to carry it off and that's probably 7.5+
Love this side by side comparison video. Tried the sea dweller on and couldn’t help not to love it.
SD! no doubts.
Greetings from Malaysia. Thanks for the video. Learned alot from it.
Finally, after years of trying and crossing fingers, I came across and was offered with both models last March.
Very difficult to choose...
heart was for the S while passion was for SD. Finally....I went for SD.
No regrets at all but someday I'll buy S...Godspeed..😍😍😍
Very informative, simple & direct. thank you
what do you think now? seems like the ratio is far from 1:1 of units in the market
have both, but for some reason SB feels good when i wear it , i guess its more balanced watch for all occasion,
Easy SD43, but w/ the MK1 dial please.
We like the decisiveness!
If it makes you feel better 😂
I am totally prejudiced because It took me forever to find the newest Sub. I live in Texas and not ONE Official store had one in stock. There were numerous stores offering a waiting list with various down payments up to the full price. It too me a while and I ended up over-paying with respect to the MSRP but I got it in NYC for not too much more and I LOVE IT. It is number 5 Rolex for me and by FAR my favorite.
I own the stainless Sea Dweller but want a new Rolex in 2 tone. I am trying to decide on either getting another Sea Dweller or trying the Sub. The Rolex dealers here (both owned by the same owner) have absolutely nothing in stock…. ever! The owner tries to sell the watches online via Facebook etc… for marked up values and only if they do not sell will he actually call me up to sell at retail through his stores. It’s brutal because a guy can never actually compare different models and I waited 12 months for my last Sea Dweller.
Thoughts on which one to get if you have a 7 in wrist? I only ask as I have to buy this aftermarket and can't find a place to try on either of them :/
Hey shannon,
The Submariner is probably the better option. The 40mm case size is going to wear nicely on your wrist, and isn't too thick. Even if you went with an older SD at 40 mm the increased thickness can feel top heavy. Let us know if you have any other questions.
@@CrownandCaliber Makes perfect sense! I guess ill just need to wait and see when they change the caliber in the Sub to the 3235
@@shannoncampbell hopefully we see one this year! It'll most likely be in precious metal, but at least we'll know what to look forward to!
@@CrownandCaliber Yeah! I hope it comes in stainless but you are probably right about the precious metals first.
Sea Delaware 126600 is the best Rolex ever
SD 43 big brother
Good overview. The footprint of these watches is not as great as would be expected.
Is the submariner noticeably thiner than the seadweller?
I tried the SD last weekend and he looks great. Besides the red line not that much different with the SM. Regards the differences in mm, it is not that big difference. You need to try it out i/o of watching these videos and make an opinion. It is for me definitely a daily watch. So, I ordered the watch. Have 2 SM (2007 and vintage from 1984). The matte dial is a reproduction and doesn’t look at all in comparison with a vintage matte dial. It is indeed not as black as a SM today but the the bezel for example is still black while the real vintage watches does also have matte bezels. Go and watch yourself I would say. Best
SD 43 👏👏👍
Try and find a deeosea hard 2018 mine there are no more left
Love the SeaDweller but unfortunately my wrist is too thin. Oddly the Sub does nothing for me. I have a two year old Omega SMP300. But loved your review.
My wrist is small too but the SD43 still looks ok and is comfortable to wear.
Submariner is for children, Sea Dweller is for real men ! 🤣🤣
Sea-Dweller for Porn Stars & Truckers.
@@markq1 The sea dweller is nothing more than a big submariner, better suited for larger men. If you're a dwarf, i understand your point of view 🤣🤣.
Sub for everyday use. Sea dweller single red for collection.
16600 for everyday use. 116660 for those special occasions
you missed the sdk4
Hey Jack,
We love that Sea-Dweller and is the best of both worlds. We wanted to focus on both of the current references in this video. Thanks for watching!
I have a large wrist so the Sea-Dweller would be my best choice.
Rolex Submariner 116610LN for the Win for me.
Could watch reviewers start including the standard weight with all links added on as it is a major driver for watch buyers to flip / sell off to another model (ie Ceramic Seadweller 4k 116600 is 173grams which is uncomfortable / top heavy and main reason why no date sub is more day to day wearable (134 grams).
You think the average person knows how much 173grams feels like in the hand?
@@motorcarclassics2922 No the guy is just being an ass showing off.
love my sd43 - the red text is what make it for me
There are so many great elements to the SD43 and the red text is at the top of that list!
@@CrownandCaliber Really a scribble of Red text get you hot for the watch?
I guess Deepsea makes it bigger. My watch is 44mm.
Wow, for a little moment I was taken to heaven, the video compliments the watch perfectly, the moon captures my mind from childhood, when I was at boarding school I would some times wake up crying missing my nan, and I would look out the window to look.up at the moon knowing it was shining over her and maybe she may been looking up at it also, this watch isn't my cup of tea in style but I appreciate it for ellagance and sophistication, I don't no why but watching this video made me think of my land the dales the white cliffs of Dover, the simple life. But the watch is far from simple in design, but the body that holds such complication is lovely and simple. To me, that's like a Rolls Royce. Sorry people if I've not spelt correctly or done the best of grammar I have dyslexia regards Ian
SD43 so much more caracter.
Heard the 2020 Sub will have changes! Please make another interesting and current comparison when possible. Thanks!
If they do update the Sub we absolutely will!
Is it bad I want a Seadweller for snorkeling 🤿
Big manly wrists need big manly watches SD43, all others go play with Barbies
Always was torn between them two but it had to be a Starbucks at the end🤷♂️
I orded the james camron
