I have this watch and love it. When I first started wearing and decided it was going to be a daily driver it they went and discontinued it. That made me sad and I feel like I need to baby it now.
The 116600 is my grail watch. It has so much going for it. I totally agree that this is the best Sea Dweller ever made. 40 mm diameter No cyclops Ceramic bezel Fully graduated 20 mm bracelet Elegant lugs It's a little thicker and heavier than a Submariner, but most of that thickness is the case back. Which, by the way, is engraved. 1220 meters of water resistance, helium escape valve. I know it's overkill, and you're never gonna need the HEV, but it's still cool, and they fit it in pretty much a Submariner case. I don't mind the larger SD50, but it's unnecessary. Other than the size it didn't do anything to the specs. I did have a look at the Deepsea, but that's just too massive to be an everyday watch. The 124060 is a good second choice for me. The proportions are better than the 114060, it doesn't have the maxi case. It is bigger than the 114060, but not by so much that you'd really notice it.
I traded in my sub date and some change for the SD4K and it was the best decision I could have made. I’ve also never seen another one in the wild but see subs all the time. That being said I ended up also getting a no date sub later on just because.
I appreciate how you went deep in this video and highlighted the subtle differences between the three watches (such as the hash marks on the bezel). I can tell you have thought deeply about this.
Really enjoy your vids. I like your more real world perspective, and what you post isn’t all edited and prettied up. Just a guy having a conversation about watches, and sometimes other cool stuff.
The SD43 balances out the thickness better, has a nicer satin dial, more refined lugs, and that great hint of red. I was also in the camp of considering the SD4K for the longest time. I figured it would be like the Sub but that have uniqueness that separated it. I got to try it on in-person and it just felt off for me. It was just too thick relative to its case size, and while more unique than the Sub it just felt inferior from a practical point of view. Technically, it's superior; however, the HEV and extra water resistance are useless even if one is a serious diver. The Sub could be worn on all occasions but the SD4K would struggle with formal attire due to the thickness. The Sub is more comfortable as well. So overall, I see the SD4K as a collector and investor piece. As you said, no one is going to know that you are wearing a SD and will assume it's a Sub anyway.
I totally agree ans that's why I just bought a 40mm SD and I don't own a Sub: I do own several watches so I don't really need the Submariner versality when the 4K SD is more special piece to own and to wear once in a while
The submariner is definitely the more elegant watch. Especially the pre-ceramic versions. After the 116600, my next watch will probably be a 14060M 2-liner.
Thanks Michael for sharing. The SD4000 is a true collectable watch. I currently own a 16610LN and the 126600. As I am getting older I started appreciating pre-ceramic small dial markers. However I feel the SD43 proportion of the watch are perfect. I call it a submariner killer. I like it better than the new ceramic submariners. The red letters are such a nice touch. I agree with your opinion that is a bit chunky. I have a 7.25 inch wrist I still looks a bit big. Not to mention much heavier than a submariner. That is the only thing a don't like about it. My 16610LN is sooooo comfortable with the older bracelet. You didn't mention the weight difference on the SD 4000 vs SD43. I wonder how that compare. Again thanks!
Thanks mate. Yes same write size here and for me the sd50 just felt a bit clunky. More now than before since I lost weight since 2020. That’s why I let it go in the end - the sd4k just felt like a sub on me and felt more special than a sub. 40mm is good for me, 42mm max. Of course the red Lettering etc is awesome but I also felt that the bezel was a bit too chunky for the dial since the dial size was never upsized, only the case. I’m happy with the change, haven’t looked back. 170g for the 116600. About 195 for the Red50
I have 7.25 wrist 19inch arms, and the Seadweller 43 is perfect for me . I also have a sub date for when I want a smaller watch. Seadweller 43 feels rugged, manly, and the red lettering as well as the 43 size sets it apart from my sub date to justify owning both. Would never part with either. Seadweller 43 makes me feel like I’m getting my moneys worth on a watch.
i had all 3 of them, the SD4000 is the best, date without cyclops makes the dial look really balanced. i have sold the sub and 126600 and keep the sd400
Since I got my SD43 in 2017, the only thing I could critique the watch about was the size of the dial. I've always found it too small for the case. Same dial as in the Sub 40. I don't understand why they chose not to proportionally increase the dial along with the rest of the watch. Same problem with the Deepsea in fact, only made worse with the ring lock and 44mm case. What puzzles me even more is the fact they increased the dial in the 42mm Explorer II and in the Yacht-Master 42, so why not in the SD43? I'm wearing a Breitling Seawolf as I write this and the dial is so much larger. Same with my PO2500 45.5, much better dial proportion. Other than that, the SD43 looks perfect to me. Great size, tapered lugs, cyclops looks better against the larger case size. I guess true perfection doesn't exist.
You re right, ist absolutely the Truth. The Reason is, that the Watch-Machine is the same as in other watches...it cost to much money for Rolex to to make a larger inside-machine. Also, they only make the Case larger, not the machine. that is the reason, why the dial is too small in case. The Cyclop - Position is near the Between of the watch, while they use the old machines....
I have had the exact same thoughts about these three watches, and have arrived at the same conclusions - with the caviat that now with the new sub, that model for me rates higher than the previous super case version, but the SD4000 still comes out on top. Very good video - keep at it!
Nice video Michael, my journey brought me from the 114060 to the SD4k because of the lugs as well but funny enough I couldn’t unsee the end links on the SD4k and went back to a 114060 😅 everything else about the SD4k was awesome.
@@donaldneo4317 my over analysis as I owned both is that Rolex at the time lazily put a sub bracelet on the SD4k. Thank you for the great video Michael. I am currently in the market for an SD4k as I feel I finally understand how underrated it is. I have 4 Subs.. Hulk, Starbucks, Sub Date (11 series) and a Bluesy(12 series). I have had a chance of owning an SD43 and I feel it is too big, too heavy and even if my wrist was bigger I still prefer the SD4k. I think you hit on several great points, and personally I would say after wearing a Starbucks having it being slightly less boxy than the first Supercase watches, I can appreciate the SD4k being more closer to the older divers and even a bit closer to the pre-ceramics with the smaller lugs and rounder case.

That’s to me, the best sport Rolex ever made. The most refined and best diver in todays market is without doubt the Blancpain fifty fathoms but the sea dweller 116600 is second absolutely
SD50 bezel is quite chunky but it make it stands out really well. Would be nice if you include the JC d blue into comparison and also deepsea challenge as an engineering marvel.
I was last week in bothRolex ADs in Stuttgart, the sales person told me they haven’t seen one themselves so far and they don’t know if they receive a piece anytime! Probably not an easy one to find
I'm really considering a 116600. I've had a 16600 previously, which I loved. How does the 116600 wear relative to that? Very similar, or not as comfortable due to being more solid?
Nice video, when i bought my sub in 2017 I had been looking at the seadweller 4k, although the thickness was too much for my wrists. Although I do like the fully hashed 60 minute bezel (like the Mill-sub) what you said about it being more sporty than the sub is definitely true.
SD43 wins for me. Love the bigger bezel. Really, it’s a feature of the watch so increasing the size is a no brainer. I won’t be parting with mine any time.
Thank you , just what I wanted to hear , tried the SD 43 about 4 times now at the AD just to be sure. I love my maxi dial Sub but the SD 43 feels perfect to me ugh. It’s not so big like people say . Feels slightly bigger than my Sub , I’m keeping both . I’m 5/7 200 , 18 inch arms , 7.25 wrist and it’s perfect ! Love it !

The SD43 is too chunky and it follows more a trend … not the roots of the true Sea Dwellers. The last true and best Sea Dwellers was the SD4K 116600 . The SD43 is only a trend follower
A very interesting video on this group of black bezel rolex divers.... I have noticed that you seem to have a soft spot for the 114060 as can be detected in some of your previous videos..... What are your thoughts on the range of coloured bezel watches that rolex produce..eg..pepsi and batman gmt?
I have both sub date and and Seadweller 43, best to have both . The sub is the perfect watch for everyday and a one and done watch. but the SD43 presence trumps the sub , it’s like a sub on steroids and the sub seems small to me at times. I don’t buy a watch as an investment
I have the SD50 and always thought the hands were a bit small for the bezel, not the other way around. My wrist is 6.5in so to your point I cant wear it. Agree SD4k is probably the best diver they made and its not as ubiquitous as the sub, love the graduated bezel. Been searching for a nice example but hate paying grey prices, though now is a good as time as any to get one. If youre a one watch guy then sub, as you said it is more versatile in a suit, but if you have many then SD4K is the pick.
Let's throw in another metric. My left wrist measures 60+mm viewed from above(caliper measured). Plenty of space for my SD43. In my opinion, one should see the bracelet about a finger broad top and bottom from above. In doubt, better a bit smaller than bigger. But everyone to their own taste.
As long as the handles do not protrude, it will be fine. I think that with a 17cm wrist you can wear the SD43 without problems, it also depends on other body measurements; because of your arm size, the SD43 definitely suits you much better. 40mm it is a small size for a diver IMO, but elegant and comfortable for daily use, also the proportions are more harmonious in the Sub. Note that the L2L distance of the SD43 (50.1mm) is less than that of the Explorer II.
I love my 114060, I tried on once or twice the SD43 at an AD and I love the red writing on the dial, plus my wrist can easily pull it off. I also don't mind the sideclops, BUT what I do mind is to have another watch that is so damn similar to my Sub! What would be the process in my mind when I need to decide to wear one over the other one?? I do not have any problem in choosing between my Explorer II Polar dial, or my DJ41, is it a Sub day or a Speedy day..? BUT choosing between a Sub and a SD43 it would make my brain explode! :D
SD50 ….fits like a dream and easily looks decent on the 7” wrist. I’ve always liked a slightly heavier watch. Cyclops are great addition from the traditional 16600 especially if you have questionable eye sight. I’ve remove the extension on my bracelet it wasn’t anything you need and it reduces the heaviness.
A few weeks ago I went into Manhattan with my college buddies. While we were on 5th Avenue, 5 supermodels came up to us. They all told us that if we were wearing the Sea Dweller 43 126600, they would have instantly had sex with us. This is a true story.
I have a 7 inch wrist and love my SD watch. My ad wasn’t going to sell it to me if it didn’t look good on my wrist and he agreed it did. Cracker of a watch. The sub feels tiny
As a Rolex enthusiast and owner of numerous, your presentation is sad…. Gibberish, nonsensical & repetitive. Although I agree the cyclops is not my preference, the 16600 & 116600 are iconic and will remain the most desirable simply due to esthetics.
Have to disagree. I do really like the 116600, but in todays watch style and "norm" a 40mm for a "super" diver as I like to call them. Its just to small. Thats where the SD43 (you called it the SD50) shines. Its the perfect size. And now with the Sub at 41, it makes the SD4K even further out. It is cool that its a ceramic with no date mag. The other thing about all of this comes to personal pref. I have always loved the look of a sub (or any rolex diver) but the market is so deep with them. "everyone" has one. people who know nothing about watches have them. Thats why the SD43 is king. Its enough like the Sub in style to "do" the same things as far as versatility in dress goes, but isn't a sub. The SDDS is cool too, but its far beyond the "simple" sub that can go with anything from board shorts to the board room. but I will admit you have to have the wrist to where it. no 6.25" wrists need apply. at 7.25" or 180mm, it fits me perfect. Now, lets discuss the mk1 vs mk2 dial! LOL
At 11:35 I meant to say the pre ceramic hour markers were too small, not the hour hands.
The SD4k is my grail Rolex. It's perfect in every way. Date without a cyclops is my favourite thing about it.
I have this watch and love it. When I first started wearing and decided it was going to be a daily driver it they went and discontinued it. That made me sad and I feel like I need to baby it now.

Too small ! Sea dweller 43
For me the SD4k is the best balance in terms of size, subtlety and for me without the cyclops makes it perfect.
SD4000 ceramic is absolutely the best sports watch ever made, I have the pre ceramic and love it but that ceramic is pure
I traded in my sub date and some change for the SD4K and it was the best decision I could have made. I’ve also never seen another one in the wild but see subs all the time. That being said I ended up also getting a no date sub later on just because.
SD43 doesn't really get the attention that it deserves. Give it time though, and it will..
To me it’s the perfect watch , love mine , would never part with it.
116600 is beautiful. Increasingly becoming difficult to obtain. Rare.
This video is excellent. A must watch for anyone considering buying any of these 3 Rolex watches. Well done.
You can’t really get the SD4K easily anymore … they are getting hard to find
The SD 43 tapered lugs are the difference maker when comparing it to the sub.
In my book, SD4k is the best one out of all the Rolex pieces of all time.
I appreciate how you went deep in this video and highlighted the subtle differences between the three watches (such as the hash marks on the bezel). I can tell you have thought deeply about this.

But the lack of red on the 116600 dial lets it down. The SD50 definitely looks sportier, and imo superior. Agreed though 42mm would have been great.

Don't want to be a wiseass, but "cyclops" like from the greek mythology
@@harry-eto thank you. English is not my first language, I wasn’t sure how to spell it.
I have both Seadweller 43 and Sub Date , Sea dweller 43 when you want more wrist presence ! I had to have both
love to get a 116600
SD50 ….fits like a dream and easily looks decent on the 7” wrist. I’ve always liked a slightly heavier watch. Cyclops are great addition from the traditional 16600 especially if you have questionable eye sight. I’ve remove the extension on my bracelet it wasn’t anything you need and it reduces the heaviness.
Great minds think alike 🎉, couldn’t of said it better, love my Seadweller43
at this point … it’s difficult to find a SD … I will take any … love their diving watches
I have the 116600 and not particularly large wrists... feels small to me. Planning to sell it.
Get the SD 43 it’s perfect !
do you go all out and get a james cameron deep sea ?
It’s one huge watch
does the 116600 start to fell small on the wrist after a while ..
No
The 116600 is the best sport model Rolex ever produced to be honest -
40mm - smaller lugs - mate dial
And non- cyclops. It’s perfection
A few weeks ago I went into Manhattan with my college buddies. While we were on 5th Avenue, 5 supermodels came up to us. They all told us that if we were wearing the Sea Dweller 43 126600, they would have instantly had sex with us. This is a true story.
The line of red text is quite appealing !
I have a 7 inch wrist and love my SD watch. My ad wasn’t going to sell it to me if it didn’t look good on my wrist and he agreed it did. Cracker of a watch. The sub feels tiny
Yes totally agree , love my seadweller43
Great content, great video mate, genuinely love you videos.
But I wish you would stop saying everything twice.
you scratched the best one !
the cyclops make the big difference on tthe two SD .. if you like no date sub then you like the 116600
SD 43 ! , lift some weights guys lol
As a Rolex enthusiast and owner of numerous, your presentation is sad…. Gibberish, nonsensical & repetitive. Although I agree the cyclops is not my preference, the 16600 & 116600 are iconic and will remain the most desirable simply due to esthetics.
Sorry You feel that way. Thanks anyway.
@@SteelmoonWatches it’s obvious you’re enthusiastic and sincere…just tighten up your presentation. We obviously share the same passion
You sure did come off as a bit rude there didn’t you. I enjoyed his video and share his opinion.
LOL
SD43 is more a Deepsea than a Sea Dweller should be … SD43 is a trend follower
Does Mk2 has wider bracelet ?
Perfectly said my friend ! Love the SD43
