- In this video I am showing you the 7 most important tells to spot a FAKE ROLEX!
I am comparing a real Rolex Submariner 166610LN with a 600$ High end replica.

Disclaimer: Please do not buy fake watches - when buying such a watch, you are supporting criminal structures and lets be real: Fake watches are for fake people. If you can't justify spending that much money on a watch there are plenty of other watches and watch brands out there, that offer an amazing quality for less than 600$.
Tell #1: Finishing on the brushed parts
he brushing on a Rolex submariner is extremely fine and when looking at the fake one, you can tell that they definitely tried to emulate that. And to be honest, they actually did a really good job! The polished flanks of the case are well done and the links on the bracelet look good, too. But the main giveaway here is definitely the brushing on the clasp. You can tell that- probably - a machine worked the brushing into the clasp by those thin, straight lines. Compared to the clasp of an authentic Sub, the difference here is definitely visible even without using a magnifying glass.
Tell #2: The crown on the clasp
When looking at the fake sub, you can spot the tiny gap between the crown and the clasp. I guess they were cutting the top part of the clasp from one block and then lasered the crown out of it with tools that were not as precise as they had to be. To be fair, I had to use a little magnifying glass to spot the difference but nonetheless, it is definitely a good way to tell these two apart: If you see any signs of welding on your sub clasp, chances are this sub is not authentic!
Tell #3: The issue with the glidelock
The Glidelock on the authentic watch glides smoothly up and down and is easily adjustable. But now when you compare the glidelock on the fake, the difference here is huge! Sliding the bracelet up and down feels super scratchy and you feel like you are going to ruin the glidelock when doing it! Besides that though, the overall feeling of the clasp on the fake watch is shockingly good but the scratchy glidelock is definitely a dead giveaway!
Tell #4:
On the authentic watch, the hour markers, equipped with superluminova sit on the dial in a bright white color, framed by a thin, white gold border. Even though the hour markers on the fake sub are equally as white and light up in the same blue color when it gets dark, the border is much thicker and likely not made out of solid 18-carat whitegold. Also when holding the two next to each other, you can tell that the thicker silver border also results in sharper looking hour markers overall!
Tell #5: Rehaut engraving
On the authentic watch, the letters on the ring are perfectly aligned with the minute and hour markers on the dial. So now when switching over to the ring on the fake watch, you can see that they definitely tried to place the letters at the correct spot but they were not 100% successful on each letter. Sometimes an L or an R are a bit displaced.
Tell #6: Printing on the date
On a real Sub, the date is displayed on a crips, white disc, with sharp and black numbers printed on it. But when spinning through the dates on the fake sub, you would think they printed the numbers on a Friday afternoon by the look of it: The black color is not as opaque and you can clearly see tiny specks of black paint around the numbers. Especially on the 29th the difference is really outstanding. So even if they did a great job with the cyclop lense and the proportions, the printing is definitely off and a good tell to spot a fake sub!
Tell #7:
The caliber 3135 is known for its accuracy and robustness and winding the watch as well as setting the date feels smooth and satisfying. But screwing out the crown on the fake sub feels like sand is crunching within the gearwheels of the movement! Additionally, when you get to the point were the crown pops out and locks into the position to adjust the date it does not do so with the light little ‘click’ you would expect: It pops out with such a force that, for a second I thought I had wrecked the stem when unscrewing it for the first time!
Tells that the fakers managed to fix on a fake Rolex Submariner 116610LN:
- The little engraved crown on the crystal
- The engraved serial number on the rehaut / chapter ring
- No more rattle sounds when shaking the watch
- Indexes on the bezel are platinized

Just because it looks like a Rolex, doesn't mean it'll run anywhere as well as one. It could be off 20s per day, while the real one is +2/-2s per day. In that case, you'd be better off with a $600 real authentic watch.

The feel part is very difficult to fix. Even at that, they could not regulate the watch to the Rolex +/- 2 sec a day accuracy. That would be too expensive for them to do for the entire production run. These people's goal is to make a quick buck, not perfection in watchmaking. That's why I always say every serious watch collector should own a timegrapher.

After owning a GMT and OP for almost 10 years I wanted to get myself a Hulk for my 60th birthday, about 2 weeks later I came across a page about high end clones and decided to give it a try. Once came I compared it to my original GMT (in terms of quality, feeling of the steel etc), I understood one thing, China can't be beaten. There is no chance ANYONE will be able to spot it as a fake, Even the inside movement is identical. The build quality and finish put a lot of legitimate Swiss brands to shame.

There's a difference between luxury and high/exquisite quality. Often the two concepts overlap, but they should be understood separately.
My point exaclty... I have a family friend who works for Rolex, and he told me that to do a Submariner or any other Rolex model for that matter - the amount of raw material used - hand labour and everything else related to the fabrication of the watch, won't cost more than 500 USD to arrive at its final stage .. yeap that's it 500 USD - pretty much the same price of the fake - the only difference is people paying 10000 or 11000 USD at the grey market for this watch, which in my opnion doesn't fit the bill for such a high price... People need to stop being stupid and realize this..

Remember one of these watches is $500 and the other is selling for $17,700. Where i live anyway. I know which one id be buying if I really liked the look of the watch.
Your not paying for the general style of the watch. Otherwise, just buy a $10-$20 watch. You are paying for fine European Craftsmanship and Perfection. It's mechanically sound like no other, and the level of detail and attention is so great it outweighs any copier trying to mass produce sell these. This isn't for the everyday man, rolex (and many other high end european watches) is for people who have the money, knowledge, and appreciation of art.
Here's the important takeaway, IMO > If the Chinese replicas are already this close (and likely to get even closer over the next few years), it tells me that most of the cost of a Rolex is in the brand name, not the materials, engineering, or build quality (not to the tune of $10K, that much is certain).
Connecting the dots, it also tells me that Tudor is a MUCH better value proposition than Rolex right now.
Oooh yeah...industry experts have calculated that even considering R&D costs and profit the price of a Sub should be around 4-5 k €.
Rest is just Rolex pushing out potential customers to market themselves as ever more exclusive. That's why they always push the prices up by 4% or so every January. There's no logical reason to do such a high increase YEARLY.

Been watching your videos for a while now and finally subscribed. Being somewhat related to this video, it would be great to get your views on the rise of Rolex thefts and how Rolex owners are now deliberately purchasing and wearing fakes to match their authentic watches to bolster their lost in the event of a snatch theft. I personally know at least half a dozen people doing this and it would be great to get a watch enthusiast’s point of view.
Honestly, the crown on the clasp of the gen looked like dogshit compared to the rep. I also noticed some pitting on the case of the gen. I've said this in another video. I own both gen and rep Submariner. My gen has more flaws than my rep. Just ask any Rolex owner. These watches are no where near perfect when new. Not even close. The smug attitude from people claiming they are need a reality check. Also, I know plenty of people buy rep's and wear them instead of their gen's. No one is the wiser that the gen is sitting in a case at their house.

For the Rehaut lining up on gen Rolex’s, this simply is just not 100% true, it is very common actually for the rehaut to be misaligned

It's more likely a gen Rolex would have a misaligned rehaut than perfectly aligned one. If I were the replica factory, I would purposely misalign it to stay closer to gen Rolex.

“Don’t buy fake watches.” Well, I own a two-tone steel and yellow gold 116110 Sub-C, a date just 41 with the jubilee, a steel 116610 Sub-C, and a steel 126600 50th anniversary Sea Dweller. I also own the V8, and V9 Noob Sub-C. After spending just under $42k before tax on my authentic rolexes from only AD’s, I can tell you that buying a fake Rolex that’s damn near just as good as the real ones, is definitely worth it. The novelty of authenticity wears off when you find that the replicas are almost just as good for pennies on the dollar. Take it from a guy that loves the Rolex brand, they’re overly priced. My grand seiko snowflake is a much better watch than any of my Rolex’s and still cost $3-4K less. Kill your ego and buy what you want for the price you want. If I could do it all over again, I’d still buy my Rolex’s, but I’d still buy my noobs because they’re fantastic beater replicas that feel almost just a good!

You really have to give the fake manufacturer credit, as she does, for their quality. It is very impressive. The fact that one can have a $600 watch that rivals a $10000 watch cannot be understated. The question I have is the movement. How good is the watch inside?

If you don’t think an RM is worth 300k, then don’t buy it. People who buy 300k RMs don’t mind spending that money cuz 1, they have it and 2, they can get it back selling it maybe even for a profit. Veblen goods have often gone up much faster than inflation. If you drive a Toyota and wear a fake RM, nobody is gonna believe your watch is real. People will just laugh that you bought a fake watch.

Videos like these are great for anyone not trying to get scammed when buying and serve a great purpose. But they also provide direction for the counterfeiters to further hone their craft.
When a mere 600$ can do this to $10k..Just imagine if they double their budget, say to 1200$, then you will need a hubble telescope to identify the differences and if they triple say 1800$, god, you might need an electron microscope to differenciate...!! and that will be scary.
actually, you have discoverd how the industry works. replicas are classified into categories of A, B, C degrees. The top knock-offs can be recognized by opening it and checking the mech core or maybe by some very professional dealers on outlooks.

I’ve seen genuine with misaligned rehauts. The rest are spot on but to someone who isn’t used to seeing and handling watches is gonna be extremely difficult. The truly scary stuff are the franken ones. They get different parts from different factories( some have better clasps or bezels for example) and add genuine parts like the magnifier and date wheel. Some even have genuine dials and hands, not anymore I think since those parts became extremely expensive but nevertheless some still exist

@Vali Sechi yes, a much better way to tell is to compare the quality of the rehaut engraving quality. Genuine rehauts do not necessarily mean aligned rehauts.
Rehauts batch to batch differ. Misalignment is super common on rolexes as well. It's a known problem that seems to get played down very often. Usually by fanboys or folks who can't get over having paid 2x retail for a great watch with some stuff out of line
yep, my franken ARF v2 116200 has a ton of gen parts, i got a lot of satisfaction hunting down gen movement parts, bulls eye dial, hands, crystal and roulette date wheel. servicing and rebuilding the movement taught me alot.
Yes yes yes 100% agree. Have seen some monstrous builds and was in awe at how immaculate some of the Franken projects look. Learned so much from reading and engaging with members that I swore not to ever purchase a Rolex from anywhere but the flagship or an AD LOL.

A very good video. My take away from this is that, yes, the Rolex is a fabulous watch and, no, the replica is in no way its equal. Sadly, this is a mute point if you do not have the £10K + to indulge the difference. Also, the evolution of these replicas is reaching a point where the Rolex is becoming only justified on subjective grounds rather than objective ones.

So I adore the style and design of the Oyster Perpetual 41 blue dial, but even as the cheapest Rolex, it still retails here in Australia for nearly $10k. This is sadly something I will never be able to achieve as a struggling tradesman. I wish there was a legitimate replica industry, where manufacturers could license the designs and make lower-quality replicas that are marked and stamped as such on the backs and in the internals. This process would eliminate or mitigate the criminal aspect of the supply of fakes for the purposes of fraud.

Please note as well, that post-2016 submariners look different from this one. The newer subC's rehaut is etched to appear with a whitish glow when exposed to a light source. Also, the rehaut is not always perfectly aligned. Some letters may be offset by a couple hundred microns, and this can be especially noticeable with the coronet at 12 o clock

Finally a review where they compare a high end replica against a real Rolex, most comparisons ive seen where with a $50 one which is just silly because you do not need a real Rolex to find out those are fake.
Great video, but careful with tell #5, the letters on the rehaut lining up with the hour markers on the dial. Surprisingly, it's actually quite common for this to be misaligned on a genuine Rolex and the latest fakes often get it lined up correctly. I would not rely on this to spot a fake.

The new V6F submariner version is almost a perfect clone of the Submariner. It is way better than this replica in the video.
It's really hard to justify spending 10K$ or more for a Rolex when you see how close the replicas are nowadays, and lets be honest, 99% of Rolex owners doesn't care about the movement inside and it would not matter to them if there is a cheap movement inside or a genuine inhouse caliber made by Rolex. The outside is what matters and it can be produced for a very cheap price - the evidences are simply lying in front of you in this video.

I personally don't own any replicas but I do have homage watches and one of my favorite homage is the steinhart 42mm.I love the design and look of many luxury watches but wouldn't mind a homage version with seiko or miyota or a cheap Swiss movement, as long I was getting the look (never been into the movements) I'm a car guy too , now that is something I want to the inside (engine performance) to be top notch and would pay accordingly.

Thing is ... unless you have a real Subby on hand - or a very experienced expert with you - it's going to be incredibly hard to spot the tells.
My solution would be to accept that you'll have to pay a bit more for peace of mind and to go to an AD or trusted retailer. Or to either buy a high end homage or simply a different, non-Rolex diver. The advantage of option two: You'll have money left over to buy even more watches with or to spend on a nice vacation.
I have done a fair amount of research about fakes, in addition to buying a couple of ~$100 ones on the gate. In my opinion, it's safe to say that it is an industry primarily aimed at people who want to knowingly wear a fake. There is also a lot of nuance to the world of fake watches, and it is actually pretty fascinating. Imo, successfully replicating something accurately is an impressive accomplishment in its own right, but that is definitely subject to much controversy lol.

@@IDKline I mean that's one way to look at it. The other way to look at it is that for Rolex, in particular you are paying an enormous premium for branding and marketing. It'd wouldn't surprise me to find out that not including R&D the cost of production of a Rolex sub is less than 1k.
I know what you're saying. The cheap (and dare I say, exploited) labour is becoming the main reason not to buy fake. With the quality approaching parity, and even outperforming the genuine article (I think it was Jody's JOMW channel which showed a fake outperforming on the timegrapher) the argument only comes down to not wanting to support potentially dark labour practices.

Also developments in the rep world (like the watch world) cause thibgs to change quickly. At the time when I watched this vid and wrote this comment, vsf had never produced a Rolex, they were mainly making Panerai and Hublot. But now VSF is now producing very very very good Rolex reps that are extremely close to the authentic. However, they too have their flaws and to answer your question, I am sure we're going to start seeing these replica vs authentic videos where these content creators are going to be shocked and astounded (even more so) by how good and close they're getting to the real thing.
