Were you suprised how little oil came out after extraction?

I just bought a Mk8 a few months ago. Im about halfway to the first oil change. This is a lot easier looking than the Volkswagen people were saying. Think I'll keep doing it myself. Thanks for the video!

Note for any mk8 R owners, it doesn't take the same oil as the gti. The R uses the older 0w30 weight 504/507 rates oil. The gti uses the 0w20 508 weight oil.

Wow great video. Ive worked in quick lubes for quite a few years and Im a bit of an oil snob. So nice to see someone do a proper oil change and this comparison with extraction V drain plug was surprising. If the mk7 leaves a quarter of a qt after extraction, then thats enough for me to use drain plug only. But if I had a mk8 I would see no prob using extraction.

    • @T3PerformanceCanada

Thank you for the kind words. We find the mod of cutting the tip of the extractor works wonders as well to make sure they is as little oil left as possible.

Just did my MK8 R with an OEMTools brand 9.5L extractor and had about a full cup left when I drained it after, and I sucked bubbles and air for a while towards the end of the extraction, wonder if it’s the standard angle cut on my extractor, so next time I’ll try the flat cut with the notch, but I was disappointed when I pulled the plug after watching this, glad I did tho….didnt trust myself more than anything 😂

I bought a oil funnel kit and was let down by the fact the 4th gen has a new designed oil filler cap :-/ I was still able to use it, but not carefree like it would of been had it fit snug on top. I ended up having to hold with one hand and pour with the other.. Still faster than the smaller funnel I had before

Greetings from Vancouver, BC. At what mileage would you recommend the first oil change? My 23’ GTi has 6,923km at the moment and I’m getting conflicting info on when to do my first oil change. I noticed on your video, the car has 6,944km which isn’t far from my mileage. The conflicting info I got was to either change my oil at 8,000km and techs at the dealership told me to run with it till I hit 15,000km or one year. It’s been exactly one year this month that I took delivery of the car and there’s an oil change reminder on my dash.

You definitely can drop from the bottom. But this engine was designed to be extracted from the top. That being said, you will do no harm from dropping the oil from the bottom.

Hi liked your video, but I have a query regarding the oil grade. I assumed my mk8 R was also 0W-20 VW508 as you’ve used on your GTI EA888 Gen 4, but after checking under the bonnet i noticed the oil rating plate stipulated 0W-30 VW507
