  • @Kikerumbo
    @Kikerumbo 4 года назад +59

    Mr. Bardwell, next step is to build a KISS quad by yourself (and tune it up) and compare it to the Mr. Steele edition one.
    There's nothing that justifies a 900$ FPV quad (old camera, bad ESCs (people say), +150$ frame without lifetime warranty). If people think that a 900$ FPV quad is going to raise their pilot skills to the top pilots level... think again. At a certain point (when you have reliable equipment), there's no amount of money that's going to make you a better pilot. I can get a Mr. Steele edition quad and I'm going to end face first at the side of a building like with any other quad. Oh, and there are CMOS cameras as fast as the CCD ones now a days. What's the point on using HDO 2 with a CCD camera?
    You for example. You are doing this 3 batteries per day challenge, with differents quads and your piloting skill are much, much better. Imagine if you practise with the same exact quad all those flights. Mr. Steele is one of the best (if not the best, even if I don't like how he flies) because he has been flying the same quad for nearly 5 years and of course because he dedicates hundreds (if not thousands) of hours to fly. Call it dedication, passion... whatever.
    As told, I'd love to see you build a DIY KISS quad (maybe FETtec and XING-E motors) and your take on it. Maybe even a "how to build" a KISS quad with the stand alone OSD (can't understand why, because I still remember the Minim OSD wiring and flashing. Nightmare!).

      Check out Linus Tech Tips "does higher FPS make you a better gamer - Featuring Shroud" Youd be surprised how much a tiny bit of extra latency throws a wrench into things. Some people are more sensitive to it, and some dont notice it at all. The ones that dont notice it at all have less of a skill cap then the ones who have higher sensitivity. The more sensitive / faster reflexes person is more cut out to be a pro gamer, or even a jet fighter pilot.. Some people just dont have the eye hand coordination or the reflexes.

    Those ceramic capacitors fail short circuit when cracked. Usually happens when the PCB is bent or stressed, so it might be very well possible that it had something to do with the way its mounted, also there are always some capacitors that go out of factory underperforming and eventually develop a short circuit.

    Finished watching... good video! Seriously put a FETtec stack on the Cidora and you will get it to perform almost the same as the Steele build.
    Stout motors: there is just something about the whole package, they are strangely efficient and the control is ridiculous. But any good motor will perform similar.
    KISS: The control is out of this world and you hit the nail on the head for some reason with KISS I am more confident, I think it simply has less latency than BF.
    Apex: Expensive but molded parts are expensive and they are very durable. The frame is very rigid and durable. Stack screws never need to be accessed unless you crack your rear plate.
    KISS HW: I have no experience personally but I see them blow the magic smoke on video all the time. Go FETtec.

    $300 is reasonable for several hours of production quality building and flight testing time. The build does not look like a rushed "bang it out" quality. It requires someone with a particular, technical skill set to do the build, test, and trouble shoot to make it right. I'd say from start to finish charging 4 hours at $75 per hour is fair for a high-end hand-built and flight-tested licensed/signature halo product.

    I am expecting this comment section to be spammed to the moon and beyond with fan boys from either side xD
    Please let me just say that this has been one of the best comparisons between these two FPV platforms I have seen so far. Thank you JB for doing such an honest and in depth look at each.
    It is important to remember that the comparisons in this video were between the Cidora and the Mr Steele Apex build, and not kiss vs betaflight. However, I would love to see JB go with this momentum and do what I have always wanted to try, and that is to really do a proper scientific comparison between betaflight and kiss. Because, "The Best Flying Kwad" is a spectrum and not a black and white thing. I am a pilot that has been flying betaflight since I started and I am convinced I can tune BF to fly like kiss, in fact I recently spent more than half my monthly earnings to build a kiss kwad. So once I can get some proper stick time in with that I'm keen to see what I can do with my Cidora to match it.
    With that said I don't have the means to do what I really want to do, but JB might? JB I think if you are up for this, the only way to make it fair would be to build two identical kwads but on both firmware types and see if you can tune both to what you personally and subjectively view is the best kwad feel. I would love to know if anyone here might have better ideas to test this? I have been drooling at kiss since I started but through the years the firmware gap IMHO has gotten so small... It's just a pitty BF doesn't ship with good defaults (for a good reason I might add but the result is the same). So a tune is mandatory on any BF build (and technically all other builds but if you want the baseline to be a Mr Steele feel).
    IDK, I might be rambling, any other opinions on this page?
    SIDE NOTE: Everyone has their input on this probably but I would also like to share that one of the worst things in the Cidora package are those 51 inch props. The amount of response I gained on my personal unit when I put some S3 or S4 props on it was staggering. So that should also help with reaction time, confidence and propwash like what was mentioned.
    Keep making Awesome videos JB!

    Not gonna lie, yeah I was impressed...by the lack of quality of Steele’s 900$ quads, they’re just not really up-to-date and completely overpriced. Even my basic 250€ quads are better and far more robust, the only thing it does best is keeping that weight down, which is pretty cool, but it ain’t worth that much.
    Also can’t believe Steele’s quad failed with such a basic thing as electronics at 24:00 ; that’s why I always put capacitors on the ESC. Doesn’t matter if it flies well out of the box, as it gets some bumps and motors get damaged, voltage spikes become more frequent and u better have some capacitors installed to better absorb them.
    If it were a 300$ quad, It’d be a fine quad as long as we don’t take the electronic failure into account, but being so overpriced...for me It’s been quite a disappointment :/

    • @supermendi0078
      @supermendi0078 4 года назад

      BlueJay Yes, all you need is great acceleration, decent ESCs and motors with enough torque to handle those rapid changes in prop rpm. The acceleration is key if you want to make your kwad “floaty” such as mr Steele’s ones, the key for it isn’t to have super powerful motors, but instead to reduce the quad’s weight. That gives you less inertia, which makes those rapid changes in speed and orientation both less energy costly, and less hard on your battery as well, which also increases your flight time (that’s why Steele can do so many tricks in a row and still get like 5 min of flight time).
      Also PID tuning and Betaflight filters are key to making your quad as smooth as possible in flight. That is one great example of something I still don’t fully understand and that I’m still learning about, mainly because they are extremely specific for each quad, which is where Steele has his experience to allow him to tune his quads to perfection, whereas I’d still have to test mine and fly them a lot more to match his level of tuning.
      I’m currently working on a RUclips channel to explain these sort of things, but it’ll take some time to be ready since it implies a ton of work, experimenting and it also requires of lots of money to be invested in this hobby (and also the 3D printing hobby, which will be another significant part of it). Bringing interesting content to the table ain’t cheap, and I also feel like I still need to learn a lot of stuff before trying to teach other people, it’s just that, in my current experience, I know you can build 3 awesome kwads, just as good as Steele’s or perhaps even better with those ~900$

    One comment about the difference in the plastics. I have used 100's of different quadcopter bits that were 3d printed out of pla, petg, nylon, and tpu. In my experience, nylon is a good choice for parts that are going to need to protect things underneath them, such as canopies. But I have had tremendously better experience with tpu being the more resilient option in most cases. For example: I purchased 2 sets of the nylon kwad skids from rotor riot for my quads. Both ground away to nothing in no time flat. I began printing my own out of tpu, and I have not ground any of them away... Like, at all. The worst thing is the thin parts that screws pass through tend to stretch if they're not thick enough to not tear in crashes. If the tpu is more than 3-4mm thick, it would take a tremendous force to tear it. I'm also not saying that the Steele bits aren't as good or are worse than tpu. I'm simply saying that If the bits are designed well, tpu can last a much longer time on a quad than nylon, depending on the need. This is mostly FYI for you, Joshua, since I have 2+ years of 3d printing on you. PM me sometime and I'll happily swap info with you on all thing 3d printing/designing for quads, and I'll help you better understand what I mean. Keep up the amazing work! We don't fly builds like these (we an in hubby and I) as we fly race builds for our freestyle ships and just tune them for a more freestyle-ish feel. We are so used to really light and very high powered builds and these heavy freestyle ships just don't appeal to us.
    I gotta say this someone we know bought this Steele build a while back and i just flew it. I was shocked (we do fly true freestyle builds here and there) at just how amazingly crisp it flew. We are very used to having huge power on tap on the race type builds (we don't fly HD cams, we fly them just as we race them BUT with a much different tune) but was totally shocked at how a heavy build with a Gopro didn't seem like there was any lack of power. It's super locked when flying fast and low dancing through a pine tree farm.. It's super poppy off zero throttle, prop wash handling is superb (we have a lot of time on KISS from back in the day and KISS has always handled prop wash amazingly well even on tunes that aren't totally dialed) when really snapping it around and getting it in dirty air. Im sure some of how crisp the dirty air handling is has to do with number one the super low load props (he had S3s on it) along with KISS and 6s torque.. I can say this 100% this build flies AMAZINGLY but in NO WAY is it worth 900... I don't care the name behind it and how perfect it's built and so on and so forth.... Its a premium product and that it is but its a very over priced premium product.
    If you want a world class flying quad out the box it is exactly that but again 300 dollars will buy you that all day long.
    The only reason i can see buying this is that you want to support getfpv and Steele.. If you want to put some cash in to keeping the US hobby stores alive during bad times and help Steele then by all means buy it. We really do need to make sure the USA vendors are taken care of and putting some cash in to the pocket of a big name in the sport that helps draw in more people... For those reasons yes it's well worth 900 dollars but if your spending 900 and thinking that it flies better then anything else and its 900 because it's just worlds better then sometjkng you can build your self for 250 bucks then your wasting your money it is not that.

    Ok, it's 2022 and $900 for an analogue 5' is still insanely expensive, even with inflation!

    Lol, that ending. For a minute there I felt like I was in a 90's stoner movie as the stereotypical "guy on the couch". Except, in the fridge... :')

    I been flying the KISS 4in1 ESC pretty much since it first came out & can also say, never had that happen to kiss 4 in 1 (Well I have burned one but that was from my own up all night till 5am building stupidity 😂)... Unlucky there. As far as actual frame durability goes, Apex is the most durable frame I’ve ever flown. My prototype Apex test frame (I was one of the test pilots for ImpulseRC during the Apex development ) is still going strong for over a year of abuse now with nothing but the expected cosmetic grazes, chips, nicks and a bit of delamination damage to the tip of one of the front arms from smashing into a rock after diving from a cliff. Arm still structurally good even after that heavy impact (And prototype arms were actually a bit thinner & lighter than the final production version) I know my Alien arms wouldn’t have survived an impact like that and Alien was a tank. Apex is quite exceptional in the thought that’s been put into it, it’s very apparent when building it. Apex was designed around KISS Components & TBS 5v unify, the placement of that particular VTX isn’t a problem as it simply just plugs/unplugs to pigtail connecting it to the ImpulseOSD board behind the camera so top plate can easily be removed completely and out of the way. You missed that there are also strain relief holes either side of front bottom plate for extra xt60 placement options. I do understand you’re just comparing as they come in RTF form though. So in regards to that, I would agree in your conclusion that it would be insane for really anyone to spend $900 on an RTF. 99.99% of pilots shopping for an RTF have no need to spend that much & the rest of the market would just build it themselves. Though as a professional tradesmen in my day job, I think the $300 mark up difference you’re questioning is quite fair when you consider labour (time, effort & workmanship) costs in the USA compared to labour costs in China. I’m imagining the RTF Apex is built in-house by Get FPV staff and the iFlight built for peanuts in some Chinese factory. That’s probably worth a mention. Would really find it interesting to see you do an actual frame review & build of the Apex to you own specs and compare building & flying it to your favourite daily driver.

      @@flo-ridafpv5713 Would be good to see him do that indeed. Even better build from scratch. Yeah man, is such a good & fun frame to build out & appreciate the thought that went into it. Awesome to hear you're loving yours mate 👌

    Very informational video as always!
    Although I don't see too many situations where one would need to access the stack screws after the quad is fully built, unless one of the stack screws breaks. Covering the stack screws with the arms actually has an advantage imo, makes it impossible for the stack screw to loosen and back out
