    Lucky Gunner Ammo I am also a cop with a decent size police department. I was a burglary and theft detective for 7 years, and have worked the streets in patrol for 5. I will more than likely be going back to detectives as a supervisor in the next couple of weeks. I said all of that to say this; I would like to contribute to your blog if there is anyway that I might be able to help. I really admire and respect your character and appreciate your videos in that you seem to have a legitimate and benevolent agenda. I also concur with Det. Blue about his assessment of theft. I don't spend too much money on $5,000 safes to store my guns. I buy something that is adequate to keep my children out of the safe and would take more than a crowbar to pry. However, $500-$600 for a safe is about my limit, and $100 for a one gun safe. If they are able to get into those, then it was a specific targeted attack and they would be able to get into the higher end safe anyway. One of the biggest things that you can do is make it a harder target. Padlock outside fence gates, illuminate the exterior of your house at night, secure doors with good hinges, striker plates, screws, deadbolts (steel doors if possible), add storm windows, decent camera system, get to know your neighbors (especially the older retired ones who love to be nosy), etc. Make it so they don't want to mess with your house due to the hassle involved. I have interviewed hundreds of burglars, and hardening your target is the best overall course of action. A decent but not overly expensive safe is just fine.

      War child, Detective, thank you so much for your input. It means a lot to me coming from your background. After careful consideration, 100’s of video reviews and visiting safe shops I came to the conclusion that if I take other precautions first; cameras, keep my mouth shut and have a camera system, I don’t have to spend so much money on a safe that thieves can get into anyway. The prices are outrageous and according to every review I’ve seen on every safe, they can all be compromised so your words have verified my thoughts. Thank you and be safe.

After a while the hydraulic openers don’t work quite as well but it doesn’t really slow me down opening it. The video is correct; it is big and ugly and VERY sturdy. I have the shot lock mechanical pistol safe. Absolutely love it. In fact I have three. The biggest plus for me being over 60 years old is that biometric safes sometimes won’t accept a fingerprint scan (Something to do with thinner skin) so I stopped using them. Mechanical works just fine. the biggest concern for me is keeping my handguns away from small fingers. It’s perfect for that and it also allows quick access. I keep my pistols for home defense in pistol safes. everything else goes into my regular gun safe. Thanks for your timely video.

    Hmm. Very helpful... was wondering about it. Keep picking these up at the store and looking, and putting them down... because I am unsure of their practicality-v.-security realistic usefulness. Thanks for keeping it different. Gun reviews are a dime a dozen; everybody is doing the latest greatest gun, and how many of these do we really buy (...don't answer that, ha)... but the everyday accessories and stuff that supplements our guns are not covered enough, outside of ammunition. And this comprises a huge chunk of the regular shooter's expenditure. Far too often we go through a trial-and-error process of hunting around for useful things until we stumble on the right thing. Packs, holsters, loaders, belts, cleaning stuff, racks, safes, security measures, optics, parts upgrades, non-OEM accessories, and more... there's a lot to cover after the gun is out of the box. Cheers.

      @@LuckyGunner One thing that mitigates the eventual failure problem (you are right, it's a matter of when, not if) is for the every day carrier such as myself. I open my electronic safe at least once or twice a day to retrieve my pistol for any time I venture out, which means that if it does fail, I will know right away. Another aspect that drove me to the bio-metric is the noise. If someone is coming into my home, I want to be as quiet as possible. I don't want to have "beep, beep, beep, beep" and this was the only safe I could find that just has a basic, fairly quiet "swoosh" that is softened by the hydraulics. It's not really about preventing theft, more about the requirement to keep it away from the kids. I have serial numbers and if someone steals my glock, I have done my due diligence in my opinion. I do respect the affinity toward mechanical devices, but out of the ones I looked at this was the only one that met the sound requirements that we had.

    After reading the reviews (on Amazon) from purchasers of many electronic gun safes you will find a HUGE amount of people talking about how they work for a while then eventually fail OR that they only open properly 7 out of 10 times when practicing. I have to agree on the mechanical combo lock. I have both push-button and electronic locks on my house and the mechanical has never failed. The electronic, although very reliable, does eventually have issues once in a while. And mine is a top brand name.

    The other problem with key bypass locks is that, besides being easy-to-pick wafer locks, most thieves will simply drill them out in about 30 seconds. No specialized tools or knowledge needed. Great video! Thanks for the realistic information.

    • @trevorcorey7910
      @trevorcorey7910 2 года назад +1

      Having stolen out of a few dorm room sentry safes, picking is not the right word for how you bypass a cheap wafer lock. I used a set of little fingernail clippers with a nail file. It fits every key way and is stiff enough to not break or bend. You just stick that bad boy in, give it a turn, and maybe a little jiggle. You could buy a specialized tool for it, lockpickickinglawyer probably sells one, but you don’t need it.
      I was told this but just some guy who heard it from another guy. I assume it’s pretty common knowledge.

Secure weapons storage with that limitation becomes a real headache. For my small collection I went with a Fast Box from SecureIt because it attaches to the bed frame. as a serial renter, i have found that many landlords (especially if you rent a condo or house rather than an apartment in a commercial building) will permit the installation of a wall or floor safe -- provided that the tenant pick up all or some of the cost and leave the unit in place when the lease ends. a bit pricey for a short term tenant, but if you plan on renting a place for a few years or longer, an option to consider. the point: in the appropriate circumstances it may be worth the trouble to ask.

    This is five years late, but as someone with significant experience with simplex locks, I think you overstate the reliability of the simplex combination chamber. I’ve replaced several of them in the last month, some of them less than a year old. They have a fussy linkage system that can wear out quickly. Granted that these are commercially used and the code was entered several times a day, so maybe they’re fine if you’re not opening your safe a lot. I would prefer to have a mechanical key backup. I’m not certain, but I think the shotlock’s key core is replaceable, so I might put a high security keyway in there, but I understand that this is something that is easily done for me and may be too much trouble for someone else. There was a bypass for that unit shown by lockpicking lawyer on RUclips, but I believe that’s been remedied by the manufacturer.
    Thanks for the great content, I agree with all your points about electronics, but just wanted to add some info about simplex.

    Well reasoned critique of the conventional approach with respect to the security issues - although, you have to admit: a large percentage of burglaries are committed by people who know the house and have been able to assess the situation before entering.

    That Ft. Knox doesn't have a cable attachment, but there's nothing preventing you from bolting a cable to the bottom mounting holes. Use a carriage bolt so it can't be unscrewed from the outside, or some similar security fastener.

    Another issue with electronic containers is the noise. You can make some not beep, but the cheep solenoids and latches can be very noisy when they release. I want the upper hand when accessing my security system.

    Most of these are design to keep children or certain other people from accessing a load handgun. They are not designed to keep a determined thief from stealing your gun. Indeed, for many of these they can just take it safe and all.

    I recently went through a very similar review of many pistol safes in the $200 ball park. I ended up buying the Vaultek V20 (no finger print reader). I agree that the cheap biometrics used in safes is unreliable, however the electronics are not all the same. I have experienced no issues with my Vaultek not closing or buttons being too sensitive. In fact, I tried to get the buttons to malfunction/fail and could not. Super fast!
    I love the idea of the Hornady RFID for convenience, something you seem to really dislike for some reason.
    Also, you neglected to discuss the app feature of the Vaultek and the fact that they have the most secure type key lock of any of these safes.
    I really like your videos but I think your extreme love for the simplex lock really skews your safe videos.

    • @alexmoore1506
      @alexmoore1506 6 лет назад

      jerzsubbie he’s said he doesn’t want to have to use a small key in low light. And with the RFID, it means that you have to keep something on you and make sure to hide the ones you aren’t using well enough.

    • @LuckyGunner
      @LuckyGunner  6 лет назад +5

      I have no special attachment to the simplex lock, but after having had one electronic safe completely fail unexpectedly and others not fuction correctly 100% of the time, I have a pretty deep mistrust of them in general. I am not an expert on small electronics, so I cannot look at a device's circuitry and determine how well made it is (although, according to other sources who have done deeper investigation into these devices, they all come from the same two or three Chinese factories). I have to rely on unbiased, third party lab testing for clues as to the long-term reliability of these locks. That is what a UL-certification gives us. *None* of these small, affordable electronic safes have a UL-certified lock, so I choose not to rely on them for a home defense gun. They are fine for other purposes, but not something I will depend on in an emergency.

    Need the gun box review for long guns please.
    In Canada handguns are a pain in the ass to get but short barreled shotguns with an overall length of 26” are pretty common. The only barrel length restrictions apply to semi-automatics

    First praise to Lucky Gunner, I've seen a few of your videos and they're all well produced and avoid the absurd that other channels seem to fringe on.
    I watched this and the long gun safe version, in both videos electronic biometric safes are casually disregarded as impractical devices. I do not know if you're right or wrong, however in sample case of 1 I have never had issues with my biometric safe except for the battery dying -going at least a year since the initial charge. As an aside I do not intend to use the safe during home defense, I merely want to keep honest people honest like many lower durability locks.
    This is a big leap but I think it would be helpful for the community: Consider quantifying the reliability of these devices. They have xx Wh batteries, what is the typical standby drain time? How many unlocks should there be per charge? You doubt the consistency of biometrics, of 100 unlocks, how many times did it fail? Personally I don't think the device having a non-zero failure rate is enough to write off these categories of devices.

    I have a barska biometric safe and it is quick and reliable... Until the batteries got corrosion and the electronics stopped working. Luckily it has a hidden key hole and I could easily open it with the key I had stashed away. If you use a battery operated safe, remember to change out your batteries! Oh and it also has a feature that beeps when batteries get low which is nice. Just don't let them get corroded.
