Georgiana (Keira Knightley) is forced to hand over her illegitimate child to General Grey (John Shrapnel).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director Saul Dibb takes the helm for this period drama adapted from Amanda Foreman's best-selling novel Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, documenting the romantic entanglements of Georgiana Cavendish (Keira Knightley), a beautiful and clever woman who becomes a celebrity of British high society when she marries the Duke of Devonshire (Ralph Fiennes) and becomes consort to one of the most powerful men in England. Beloved for her trend-setting fashion designs as well as her political activism, Georgiana's fire and wit make her a beloved figure everywhere but her own home, where her cold and distant husband's control over her is stifling, soon sending her into the arms of a another man -- an act that soon forces her to learn about the brutal difference in the rights afforded to 18th century men and women.

Sickens me how Gerogina's husband made her raise his own illegitimate child and of course raised his and Bessie's kids, but made Georgina give her baby away. He was a true monster.
Because it was a girl. Perhaps a male boy would had been accepted as "his" legit child.
@@vilwarin5635 his "bastard" was a girl, too. It's just a reality of those days. Husbands were allowed to do everything.
I've never been so angry at a character before. I truly despised him which basically means he's a phenomenal actor and did an excellent job
Ideally, they should raise their own children.
But what this movie shows is that Feminism is having an open relationship with another man who is not your husband?
I know the guy was a miserable cheater, but that doesn't mean you also follow that game.
Susanne Stein In those times there was no way a woman who was married and had a child to another man could raise it. Even if she was single a woman of her class and indeed the middle classes no way could she raise her illegitimate child. Think of the character of Lady Edith in Downton Abbey ( in the 20th century) had effectively had to do the same thing.
You may see the Duke as a monster, but compared to other comparable woman who had affairs I think he treated her well. Henry VIII executed his wife, George I imprisoned his wife for life (and I think had her lover executed). There was a huge double standard, and women knew it. Had the Duke been really cruel he would have divorced her, cut her off without any income and not let her see her children She would have been disgraced in society and probably lived as a poor relation at Althorp.
As it was she returned to her social position, continued to live the life of wealth and ran up huge gambling debts, which had they been paid in full would have bankrupted her husband. Her daughter was raised by her paternal family, and the Duchess was able to visit her. Although the movie says this was in secret given the artistic licence taken by movies you can take that with a grain of salt.
I have very little sympathy for her. At the time this was happening to her, many of my great grandmothers were living much harder lives, if not in actual poverty.
How did Keira not receive an Oscar for this? Or at the very least a nomination
stacey dickey MY QUESTION EXACTLY
That stuff is rigged. Always was always will be.
Because she’s black ... oh wait 🙄🤷🏻♀️🤣🤣
Because no amount of acting can interpret what a real mother would feel at this point.,
Some of her best work
even if you are not mothers this scene is a torture
Laura Lou I am not a mother. I love children so much. I would be completely heartbroken if I was in her situation.
Laura Lou I pray the day never comes when I have children. I would only give them away if the priest is asking who gives them away to this man or woman on there wedding day
I watched this movie with my mom and she paused and hugged me after this scene 😭😭 we were both ugly crying but I think my mom really felt Gee more than I did...
Yeah, I can’t imagine having to give your baby away. She must’ve felt a great pain. It’s like slowly being tortured and having your heart being torn apart. ☹️
even if you are not a woman
It's sooo unfair those times. The Duke had affairs with many many women. She only wanted one man, got pregnant and she gets punished for it. Smh
And he probably nocked up a bunch of girls
Double standard social construct. Sadly, it still exists today where men could face little or no repercussions and women are treated worse for doing the exact same thing
She was reported to have affairs with more than one man. We have no idea who she was in love with. The only indication from her papers was her husband.
@@saffronjay3903 Can you tell me who else?
That’s how life is for women. One injustice after another. More instances for double standards to screw us over than you can shake a fist at. It needs to change. Men were given the physical strength to protect us and they have taken full advantage of it.
I cannot imagine the pain of loosing the only child that was born out of love and not obligation.
This was heartbreaking. She couldn't keep hers yet she was expected to raise his heartless. I know it was a different time but it was cruel. I read she got to visit her don't know if that was true I hope so.
Well I read that she was allowed to visit her but the girl don't knew she was her mother, and when they finally told them Georgiana was dead soo is sad
She had quite alot of contact with her daughter.
This scene never fails to make me cry. The way the baby cries and how she is and how she reacts to it . . . so heartbreaking.
What I love about Keira is that she is experimental. watching these I thought her crying was gonna be bad but it builts up to a poignant tragic haunting scene. amazing actress.
I would have arranged an "accident" for my husband, inherited his wealth and then remarried to my lover in a couple of years. Better to have a guilty conscience, than give up your child.
At this point he already had a son, so his wealth would already have an heir.
K B she would’ve controlled he welsh given her son was a todler
As a woman in that time you wouldn't have inherited his wealth, it would have gone to the next male in the line
@@TheEastieA In that time? Even today women couldn't inherit in Britain if they're nobility
@@AlexS-oj8qf i didnt know anyone had a low enough iq to actually believe this nonsense and be able to get on the internet and make comments
Oh my god... I started to cry so hard when the baby cried!
yeah me to
I feel butterflies in my stomach every time I hear Keira groaning and crying in the end. Such a shame they cut the scene
well babies cry to call out their mothers so it's a biological thing.
Same.
The pain I feel in this scene is awful. For a Mother to hear her child crying and not be able to comfort them...
How is a person able to survive afterwards?
Being a mother, watching this scene means extreme agony to me.
Julia Hanson it's amazing how she was able to interpret such emotional torture not being a mother, yet. I love her.
I know what you mean. Her performance quite baffled me, it was so good. But actually I love nearly all of her movies. She's definitely one of my all time favourite actresses.
AngelGir
AngelGirl where did they take her baby?
Harlee Courchene she had an affair with a man who later became the Prime Minister, in this scene she is handing the child over to these people who will later give the baby to the man’s parents (the baby’s grandparents). It’s a true story and the baby never found out her mother was Georgiana until after she died
Great acting on keira's part!
she made me cry, the woman knows how to act!
CSEfreak same😭
@@CSEfreak i also cried, she really act this scene amazing
This is not only amazing because of Kiera’s surprisingly amazing acting in this scene, but a lot also because of Rachel Portman’s fabulous music score. The way the music slowly creeps when she hands the baby away, and they way it comes to an emotional, overflowing climax when the baby first cries. I think 50% of the emotion I feel is because of how well the music narrates this heart wrenching scene.
Even the music scores from the love scene and the scene where the duke gives Georgiana the letters from her girls when she’s in bath with Charles is AMAZING. It’s does so much story telling on it’s own!
Pheobe Winterbottom I agree. Rachel Portman is a master at creating compositions that fit every scene perfectly and honestly is the main reason why the emotion is carried out so well. Truly unbelievable.
Yes, men can do what they want. Women can not.
Ugh she has this amazing way of putting you in her character's position and you can really feel their emotions. My eyes water every time I seen this scene no only because shes a breathtaking actress but because of the intensity of this scene in general. Amazing, favorite period piece of hers. Also you guys must see Anna Karenina, with Keira as the lead as well.
This would be the most difficult thing I would ever be able to do... I'm only 15, and yet the very thought of having to give my new born child to a mer strangers is so horrifying, it makes me go insane. I would be screaming in this situation. I'd be crying so much, my voice would die, and by tears dry up from the amount that would spill onto my cheeks.
Now you are 18but I am 15 I want to love my child more then my awn self
As long as i remember; Not a completly strangers. The baby was given to her grandfather (her father's father)
@@kh.forbes875 I’ve promised myself long ago I would be the amazing mother I never had to my unborn child to this world in the future whoever is given to me to raise I shall do my duty right and never to abandoned my child like how I was
Dammit Voldemort...
Here i am cutting onions and i see your comment and I just burst out laughing damn you!!!
Hahahaha
Baby same here crying and laughing at this comment
It's heart-breaking, but at least Eliza was very much loved by her father and he told Georgiana as much when he met her years later.
This scene never fails to make me break down. I cannot imagine Geogiana's pain when she had to give up Eliza.
Absolutely gut wrenching, I can’t stop the tears every time I see this scene and I’m not even a mother yet. Georgina was such a strong woman.
I'm adopted and every time I watch this scene in the movie I wonder if that is how my birthmother felt when they took me from her
akhenatenwasawesome :-(
Bambiluvsyou Your reply was unnecessary, and shows a tone deaf lack of compassion.
If you're 18+ it might be worth getting in contact with your birth family. If you were adopted overseas then there's still a chance, but it could be very difficult logistically. It if wasnt her choice then it might make her incredibly happy to see her child again - even a letter saying you're happy might mean a lot. Up to you.
A lot of the time people give their children up for adoption because they can't take care of them, not because they just didn't want the responsibility of raising a child.
akhenatenwasawesome oh my gooood 😢😓.. i’m so sorry, you made me cry so bad 💔
keira is amazing in the movie but this scene made me cry...
the name eliza i fond it so beautifull ,i gave my baby girl it when she was born.
kryssie my name is Eliza
@@elizadunford9058 A beautiful name , Eliza is my favourite character in the book " The forgotten garden " .
She is princess Diana’s great great grandmother
Maternal or paternal?
Wikipedia says she was her great-great-great-great aunt, so what is the truth?
Great-great-great (idk how many greats) Aunt. Diana’s surname is Spencer and the Duchess’ maiden name was Spencer. Diana descends from her brothers line
They also both lived at Althorp House (the Spencer family seat), before marrying.
@@stefanellasizzarettia8417 Yes and the Dukes of Marlborough are also Spencer as well. The first Duke had no heirs and the title was inherited through the female line who married into the Spencer family. A later Duke changed the name back to Churchill but they are really Spencer.
Thank God women have more rights now
And now some “Godly people” want to take them away .
Not about rights this is Royalty that pulls she like this. But I guess severyone house hold is different.
@K M It is actually not a child. It's called embrion, it is literally just fertilised egg. Babies are not being aborted, but fertilised eggs. And according to the medicine, it's not killing. And I think medicine's word is a lot smarter and more knowledgeable than yours. 🙄
@K M I'm not in for the talk about that, nor do I ever leave comments like these, but that comment really annoyed me. Surely, doctors and the countries wouldn't approve of abortions if it was really a child killing? Where I live, it is approved to abort until 5 weeks, later it's illegal. And I think that's perfectly fine, because in that period it isn't developed to be considered a child. That's what medicine says, and I will always trust doctors who know about this stuff and studied it, more, than you internet and Bible smart heads. We're just lucky you guys arent leading the countries, imagine what a disaster that would be.
Asja Delić doctors and most countries certainly do approve of aborting actual children. There
have been instances of full term babies being almost fully delivered, and then the “doctor” kills the baby, and finishes delivering it. In cases where the baby is born alive, they are thrown into the trash like garbage. They literally have to lay all the body parts out on a table and sort through them to make sure they are all there. It’s evil and you are incredibly naive if you think there are doctors that would never do things like that.
I tear up every single time, even without watching any other scenes, or getting any build up...
Honestly, the thought of having to give up your child like that.... I honestly can't imagine that kind of pain.
Superb acting by Keira Knightley.
I've seen this movie, this scene and everything leading up to the credits just made me cry harder than I was just pissed off with tears. He plays the roll of an ass so well it's frightening.
One of the most heartbreaking scenes ever. I cry every time I watch it.
This scene tore my guts out. I know all about this pain and walking away with empty arms
You think you had a hard life? I couldn't imagine everything Georgina went through. Married to a sociopath, no woman's advocacy or woman's rights. Her mother didn't protect her. I don't know how she carried on.
By drinking. I think she died of a fatty liver
The woman's advocacy were enough not to punish an adulterer if she were born in middle-east they would stone her to death
still better than many people's lives lol. She was rich and everything else. Her life would be truly sad if she was a farmer without access to education and condened to live only 30-40 years
According to Wiki, (which I know you can't always trust, but whatever) Georgiana gave birth to Eliza in February 1792 and then entrusted her to Grey's parents in September 1793 when she was about a year and a half. So this is not entirely accurate. Still such a heartbreaking scene though ):
I'm sure everyone in the movie is not wearing the exact replica of the outfits that were worn then and also didn't speak the exact words, so what's your point?
+Velle M Well my point is that the timeline is a lot different and that Georgiana gave up her baby a lot sooner in the movie then in real life
Well technically the movie didn't specify the date and time in which she gave up her Baby. The time period is more implied, especially with the clothing and hairstyles, we can tell that it is not in the same year, the movie really just shows her lives most priceless moments in one conglomerate.
Christopher Nettles the movie didn't specify the date but the baby is obviously only a few months old here
catsandkittys you just said wiki was unreliable but you said this scene was inaccurate? Lol
Keira Knightley will go down in history as one of the best actresses to come along in a long long time. Matter in fact I wouldn't be surprised if she reigns forever like a Bette Davis Katherine Hepburn Lauren Bacall type did, albeit each a very different type actor. You know what I mean. Legendary. Keep up the good work girl! ❤️😘😁
Watching this scene it really broke my heart, because the only thing she could give her baby was her beautiful name, Eliza. Afterwards I read Elizas' biography and she named her own daughter Georgiana Ellice 😢. I bawled my eyes out after reading that, it meant so much to know that she knew that her mother loved her.
Fighting Voldemort: "EXPECTO PATRONUM!"
Fighting Duke of Devonshire: "REDUCTO PATRIARCHY!"
that scene breaks my heart 😢

The Dutchman and the dutchess rhyme
Heart
Broke my heart
Your grammar broke me
That mother instinct to run to your crying baby.😞
I can not imagine being a mother during that time, I ALSO could not imagine being a daughter--where no one really wanted me unless I could attract a duke (hopefully)...and if I couldn't and also the pressure to be charming and outgoing...I'm more timid around new people :(
I must add though I love her dresses, (i wish we could still wear those) and women of that time were so openly emotional, expressive and they had no shame. I don't feel like I could do the same today, it's more about seeming
I am literally bawling my eyes out right now. I remember watching this as a child. I understood how serious this story is, but I honestly watched it for the beautiful costumes. But now as I rewatch this scene, I could not imagine the sorrow and emptiness of giving up your child. My heart goes out to Georgiana and all people in similar situations.
I believe keira should have won for this movie. !!!!! Her performance was so raw
People giving up their cats after having an allergy be like
I’m only fifteen but if i had a child at my age or even younger, my heart would break if i had to give him/her away.
That was a heartbreaking scene. I have a hard time watching this movie because it's just so sad and unfair.
This is the best scene of the film. It reminds me of Sophie's Choice. Keira deserved all the mainstream award nominations for this role.
i really like her dress in this ngl
Eliza was never separated from her mother. No infant can survive without a mother. If Eliza were taken from the duchess she wouldn’t have lived her life. But history shows she did have a happy life because she was raised by her mother.
I cry so much every single time I watch this part.
I almost cried watching this movie
Truly heartbreaking scene
Because the baby wasn't her husband's; he'd had numerous affairs during their marriage and she slept with Charles Grey and got pregnant. This is all a true story.
Nooooo way would I hand over my child to a stranger.
You would, or you would have been turned out to starve. The baby went to live with her grandparents.
@the great spirit. The baby was looked after very well and was later married into the English aristocracy. Charles Grey later the 2nd Earl Grey and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom also kept a close interest with his daughter and visited her often later in life.
This entire movie is so heartbreaking
The place looks amazing like North Norfolk.
that was the most heart breaking sound in the world.
Keira Knightley, is to me, the most gorgeous woman. Her beauty, maturity, acting, and her accent. I have always loved her movies. She is beautiful.
The most heartbreaking thing for a mother to go through..Losing her child!
R.I.P. John Shrapnel (1942-2020)
this scene makes me cry so much 😢😭
This scene absolutely broke my heart.
Bess seems quite loving here
This is the most heartbreaking scene ever..!!
This destroys me. Every. Time.
Hi
Incredibly, I learned Sarah “Fergie” Fergusson is in Georgiana’s direct line, a 5x great granddaughter!
The child she gives up in this scene, Eliza..one of her daughters becomes a 4x g-gmother of Fergie.
This scene wrings my heart every single time 😖😖😖
That scene... always make me cry 😢
Because of the way she said the name Eliza my daughter is called Eliza
I love this movie!! Keira Knightly was so amazing in it and the story was incredibly well done IMO….
Ok I’m not a mother, never seen the movie and I’m crying. This is just....
Saddest scene in the movie
That’s good acting 👍🏻
I didn't even see this movie and I'm crying!!
and this is the point in the movie where i realized there would be no happy ending and i started screaming JUST KILL YOUR POOR EXCUSE OF A HUSBAND. she couldnt be with grey cause she didnt want to leave her children and thennnn she gives up another one!! he didnt even want his daughters why couldnt he let her take them and leaveeeee.
Her younger sister Harriet also bore two illegitimate children, fathered by Granville Leveson Gower. Unlike in Georgiana’s case her husband never found out. She acted as godmother/sponsor to her children who were of course raised away from her. Granville would later on marry her niece- who was also named Harriet- and the two of them “adopted” the children although Granville’s wide never found out they were her cousins.
Makes me cry every time
What a painful scene to watch... 😢
Am not even a mother ....and I feel devastated.
I cried at this scene
Keira's crying here is just... my God!
I’ve never seen this movie so I don’t know why she had to give up her baby… but I cannot imagine a more heartbreaking scenario than having to hand over my baby, hearing it cry and not being able to go comfort it. This scene made me feel deeply sad & anxious. 💔💔💔
I'd like to remind you that at the time of this movie, Kiera Knightley had no real-life children.
Отличный фильм и актеры
Magnifique scène!! 💝💞💖
This part of the movie literally broke my heart.
This whole movie made my heart ache, it hurts so much knowing this was all real.
i cry whenever i see this scene
i always cry when i watch this clip
This scene is the most sad scene in the movie, the most upsetting sound in the world for me is a baby crying
My own daughters name is Elizabeth and when I heard the baby crying and saw her trying to run after her and take her back I couldnt finish the scene.
Coitada da Georgiana
💔💔
Why her movie is always have a sad ending. I mean in Anna Karenina and this. This scene is broke my heart into pieces.
Why is this monster Bess stopping Georgiana from holding her daughter? She didn’t have to do anyone’s bidding. Why is she separating a child from her mother? I think she wanted this to happen.
I started crying from she was taking Eliza outta the carriage 😭
It looks like her heart is dying
Love this movie ❤❤
Wow, to love your first children so much you'll give up your newest & the love of your life & live with an abuser & his mistress to be with them. That's where she learns there really are "no limits whatsoever" when it comes to what you will do for your children.
This shows me How very Unhappy & Tragic Period Time in 18th Century Georgian Era 1700s England was like.
My heart would broke 😩💔
Фильм называется "Герцогиня"
Because of this scene and how she said the name I called my daughter Eliza
This is Kiera Knightlys best performance. I'm only here to comment and not actually watch the scene cos I watched it once and it always stuck with me but I can't watch it again, it's too much, it's too heartbreaking.
